Have seen Dr Shigley for years, mostly for injuries from overexertion or athletics; I've seen several chiropractors in the past, and what I appreciate about her approach is the combination of chiropractic and physical therapy that she recommends. I first started visiting Dr. Shigley about 3 years ago. I had this burning that ran down from my lower back, through my rear end and down my legs. My "mega box store primary doctor" just threw pills at me and I was desperate. I've never been a big believer in chiropractic care. My first and only previous experience was 12 years prior with someone that scared the heck out of me after a car accident and I never went back, assuming they all tried to kill you. I had reached a breaking point with the sciatic pain though and friends were pushing me to give a chiropractor another shot. So, I found Dr. Shigley and sent her an email asking a bunch of what I'm sure seemed overly crazy questions. I was TERRIFIED. I just knew this woman was going to turn me into a pretzel and scare the hell out of me again. Nope. She was super gentle and with just one visit I was a little better... it took several visits to get the sciatic pain to completely disappear, but after living with it for SO many years, I was amazed that something so simple as adjustments could get me living normally. The problem was my hip rolls forward (stupid kids, giving birth, I guess my body never completely fit all the way back together again). I go in now as needed when I feel like I'm walking funny - or like today when I'm hurting (probably because I ignored it for too long). I know I'll walk out feeling better and all will be well. I have a 9-year-old daughter that has upper back pain from time to time and I took her in several months ago and even she says it's a big help. She's able to carry a backpack now instead of using one on wheels. She's SUPER gentle with my kid too. Always lets us know what she's doing and why and has an amazingly warm and happy attitude. A little background here. I am a dentist and unfortunately get upper back and neck pain from bending over all day. Over the course of 6+ months, I've been to other chiropractors, physical therapists, and all sorts of massage therapists. I don't really trust chiropractors as they typically appear very salesman like and promise the moon through simple adjustments. So I was definitely a little skeptical, but I went to Dr. Shigley based off word of mouth. As a healthcare professional myself that prides myself on giving recommendations based off what will truly help my patients and not having money be my bottom line, I can recognize another truly authentic practitioner when I see one. For example, I asked her a couple questions about some products she was advertising ready to potentially try them out and she in turn asked me some poignant questions, and then said she didn't recommend it for me. Not only did she focus on the chiropractic portion of it, but she also ran through some exercises for me and made sure i knew how to do them. Hard pressed to find a chiropractor who actually cares about what long term will help patients, the muscles/exercises, posture, sleep patterns, and things of that nature. The exercises were pretty similar to what i had been receiving in physical therapy, so you can tell she knows her stuff as she's been in practice I think over 3 decades. Next couple visits, i noticed she would adjust her schedule to see me for dry needling. She would see me later than posted hours on a Saturday and actually stay late to make sure she got the trigger points she saw. She really didn't have to make such an effort to try to get me better. Not only that, but i can text to ask questions and schedule appointments which is convenient. My only qualm about them were their hours but because she opens up her schedule a little to stay late to accommodate me, that is no longer a concern. read more

I have been a Dr. Shigley's patient for the past 9 years. She is the best Chiropractor in Austin area. Every time my family came to visit, I bring them to see her for any neck and back problem. I continue to send my friends and my family to see her and all of them like the treatment. They all have positive results after a few treatment. She is caring, knowledgeable and seriously want to help patients get well. I am so thankful that I found her 9 years ago. Dr Shigley is a miracle worker. Her depth of knowledge of the human body well exceeds most chiropractors. If I ever have a problem that others can't figure out or fix, I got to her. Now I will not waste time going to other Chiropractors, but go straight to her. She does so much more than bone cracking. I was in so much pain when my hip was out I could not sleep. She spent 45 minutes working on me with tens machine, muscle relaxing gels, manual adjustments. I left in a bit of pain, not sure if my problem was fixed. By that evening, all was gone. Let's just say a huge disappointment, a lot of generic suggestions (such as you need to improve your posture and do stretches) and several back "cracks" I was $90 lighter, but in the same amount of pain... I was in Austin from out of town and hurt my back over the Christmas break. I stumbled upon Diane Shigley's chiropractic office surfing around for doctors in northwest Austin where I was staying. (fyi, you can check her site out at standstraight.com) I was surprised to find it open on Christmas Eve and when I explained that my back was a minor emergency they managed to fit me in. Dr. Shigley took her time to assess the problem and then a few adjustments later I could bend at the waist again with minimal pain. She suggested some exercises and then sent me on my way. I've been to several chiropractors but at this place I felt like my problem was taken seriously and I wasn't just being moved through an assembly line. I've been to four chiropractors in Austin and Dr. Shigley is the best, hands down. She will adjust my back, then go back through to make sure she's gotten all the spots. If there's a spot that's harder to adjust, she applies a heat pack to relax my muscles then goes back to them. With other chiropractors I've been to, if they can't adjust a certain area, they just move on and I'm out of their office in 5 minutes. With Dr. Shigley, she takes her time to make sure she's gotten to all the problem areas and that I'm feeling better by the end of the visit. I have been going to Shigley since 2001 after countless chiropractors all over Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park and San Marcos. Her knowledge is well beyond chiropractic. (She helped me get pregnant after 10years of trying). She also can adjust extra large people due to her incredible strength - I referred a 6'5" 300lbs football player that went to numerous chiropractors for his low back and Shigley adjusted it on his very first visit! I have so much respect for her. She truly knows what she's doing. I visited Dr. Shigley after getting results of an MRI that showed disc protrusion and other issues with my neck. She is amazing! She reviewed my medical test results, listened to my lengthy story, asked questions and provided some specific recommendations around diet, lifestyle and environment for whole health approach. Dr. Shigley took the time to provide thorough, intelligent explanations of why she was making certain recommendations. Dr. Shigley is amazing. I started seeing her for chronic severe knee pain, which I've had for about 10 years. I've seen numerous doctors, had x-rays, surgical consults, everything you can think of, and they all said the same thing: I can have surgery but I might end up worse. I resigned myself to walking around like an old man and popping Advil like Tic Tacs until I saw The Shig (as we call her in our house). 3 minutes into my appointment, she asked me how I sleep and I told her, on my back with my legs laid flat, like a frog in biology lab. (Yes, it's weird and creepy, my hips are double joined. My husband is a lucky man.) So she points out that sleeping that way stresses my knees and pulls them out of joint, so maybe I should sleep with a pillow under my knees. Huh. 10 YEARS it took for someone to think of this?!? The best thing about The Shigster, besides her treatments, is there is no pressure to come 4 times a week or buy a bunch of crap like most chiropractors give you. She treats what ails you until you're better, then sends you on your way. Love it. And Michelle is an awesome massage therapist. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is her hiring practices can leave something to be desired. I don't think I've ever seen the same person behind the desk, and they all seem a little confused and/or indifferent. Since he/she is the first impression of a doctor's office, I think the receptionist should be a helpful, professional adult, but it's not a huge deal. Dr. Shigley and her staff are absolutely amazing! My friend recommended her when I complained of pain in my arm. I put her information on my fridge and never followed up with her...until I hurt my lower back and I could barely stand up straight or walk. My life is too full to be injured! I grabbed her number off the fridge and called immediately. There were no appointments available, but they fit me in anyway. I didn't have to wait long at all. In less than one week, I was almost 100% healed! I'm still marveling at my recovery. I have continued seeing her and I feel great! I've been to a chiropractor before and I can tell you this appointment was night and day. The other doctor's facility ran more like an assembly line. Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am. Pay at the counter on your way out. In contrast, Dr. Shigley is the consummate professional. Her treatment room is private and she takes her time finding out what's going on with you before she does any adjustments. I was hurting so much and very nervous on my first appointment, but she quickly put my mind at ease with her calm presence and intelligent discourse. Not only is Dr. Shigley top notch, I also love the massage therapists at her office. They are all very skilled and professional too. Finally, I was recently very ill. Stay far away from Dr. Shigley's office. I am a nurse and made the big mistake of coming here for back pain after a car accident. I've had a really hard time getting my records sent to the insurance company. I called the office today, and the receptionist was rude, condescending, and incompetent. She said she didn't know where my chart was. She couldn't tell me if my records had been sent. She wouldn't help me at all . She said I would have to speak with the doctor and then hung up on me. I had to drive to the office to talk to the doctor. She defended the staff. I got no apology for the way I was treated on the phone and I will probably have to hire an attorney to get my records. I have never been treated so bad by an office in my life. Don't go there. read more
