A Hidden gem. One of my school mom friends recommended this location and we weren't disappointed. This was my daughter's first experience at the eye doctor and they did a really good job. They are definitely kid friendly and made sure she was comfortable at all times. From the front desk to the doctor to the person who helped us pick out the actual glasses. Everyone had a very cheerful disposition and were super helpful. The doctor even follow up with my daughters primary care physician with a know about the visit which I thought was excellent. My daughter was particularly happy about the treasure chest of toys you get to pick from after your visit we will definitely be back. read more

So mad right now! My family has been coming here for years. Never missed an appointment and purchased multiple sets of eye glasses. So money spent here. When we started it was a small practice. Now we never see the same provider. This time I accidentally wrote appointments in my calendar on the wrong day for my son and I. Two days after I missed appointment I get a bill for $100 ( $50 no show fee for each appt). I called to explain what happened and they refused to waive any fees. This is the first time this has happened in the YEARS we have been going there and after all the $$$$ we have spent. I understand fees are a deterrent for no shows but $100 for an honest mistake and no understanding for a loyal customer. You have lost my business. If you cannot support your customers why should we support you!!!! read more

I have not been to an eye doctor in almost 20 years, so imagine my anxiety when looking for one and the dread of getting an eye exam. I turned to Yelp to help me out, and was immediately persuaded by the amazing reviews for Dr. May at Advanced Family Vision Care. The process for making an appointment was very easy. I printed the patient forms from online in advance to help ease the check in process. I was warmly greeted at arrival (Dr. May checked me in, I did not know this at the time but she was great!) and waited briefly in the clean, spacious waiting room. The overall exam was a breeze. Brooke, my technician, made me feel very comfortable and thoroughly cleaned all instruments before use. She explained the process thoroughly and was very nice. Dr. May put all of my anxious feelings at ease-- she was very thorough and wanted to know if I had any questions for her. At first everything was fine. I took time off from work (I get a limited amount of vacation time at my current job so I have to budget this time carefully), drove to the office and had an exam. The doctor and staff were very nice. I had a glasses and contacts exam. I made it clear I wasn't going to order contacts, that I just wanted the contact exam to make sure I was still the same prescription. Dr. May assured me my prescription was the same...but said she wanted to "try a tweak" on one of them to just "make things sharper". She said that they didn't have one of my lenses in stock, but would order them and they would be ready in about a week. I thought "this is annoying as I have limited free time but ok, I can just try to run and pick them up one day and be in and out" I then picked out glasses, paid them and left. Then the trouble started. I received a call informing me that "my contacts were in and asking when I wanted to make my appointment". I informed them that I had already had a contact fitting appointment so I wasn't going to use vacation hours for another one...but apparently, as a new patient it was essential that I have ANOTHER appointment to "make sure they fit"....despite there being no change to my prescription in one eye and a "tweak" to the other eye, and despite the fact that this would literally be an appointment to receive a sample pair as I had made clear I had no intention of ordering contacts through them! I can't believe that they thought I would be willing to pay them still more money and take still more time off of work so the doctor could ask me how a sample pair of contacts felt, and if the "tweak" made thing a little sharper. I am annoyed that they were not up front with me about this fact when I went for the first appointment. Had I known, I wouldn't have ordered anything through them. I can't wait to see what kind of foolishness they are going to throw at me when my glasses come in...I'm sure new customers are also expected to pay for a special "eye glass confirmation appointment" as well. In short, if you are an adult with a full time job that has to extensively schedule your week and don't have oodles of time and money to throw away on frivolous appointments, I'd skip the contact exam. I just ordered new contacts online that will come to my door using my old prescription, no co-pay or time off required...I think I will do just fine without any "tweaks". read more

First time getting a thorough eye exam, and only need minor corrective glasses if I'd like. Advanced Eye Care was extremely helpful. They were flexible when I needed to reschedule. They explained everything during the exam and answered all my questions. I felt calm and comfortable the whole time. They allowed me to browse their glasses selection without any pressure to buy. They priced the glasses I was interested in and noted them in my chart if I want to come back and order those glasses. I also have a copy of my prescription so I can go elsewhere, but since they were so nice, helpful and reasonable I'm sure I'd buy glasses through them. read more

Dr. May is awesome! Everyone there is really great from the front desk to the assistant to the girl who helped me with my glasses. I felt very comfortable and happy and learned a lot about my eyes. They answered all my questions and went above and beyond. Definitely recommend! My husband was referred to Dr May by the University of MD Rehab Center after a stroke. Because of the stroke he had a field cut and needed help with his vision. Dr May and the staff are amazing. Dr. May and her therapists are amazing. They have worked successfully with my husband after a serious eye injury and traumatic brain injury. To say that they are conscientious is an understatement. The care that has been shown to my husband and my family is unsurpassed. The professionalism shown (especially during Covid) allayed any fears that we might have with treatment. Dr. May's attention to keeping her education up with the very latest therapies is admirable. Everyone in the office shows kindness, compassion, and professionalism. My husband's case is difficult but he has shown remarkable progress due to the diligent therapies that Dr. May has overseen. Dr. May also takes the time to explain the many intricacies of vision and vision rehabilitation. Her attention to detail and her listening skills are a plus for any patient. I have seen patients in this office from young children to highly disabled patients and every one of them have been treated with care, smiles, professional attitudes, and courtesy. But the level of care is what I find unparalleled. Treating difficult cases requires diligence, a positive attitude, education, caring and excellence. That is what you get at this office. The attention to detail is also evident in the optician side of the office where they are able to assess your vision, and/or fit your glasses and contact lenses with the same business acumen that they use in all of their procedures. read more

I have moved a lot in my life so I have been to dozens of optometrists. With five star reviews on all platforms, I was expecting an amazing experience. This was by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced, probably from any doctor's office at all. My husband and I arrived for our dual appointments just 12 minutes late, and as soon as I walked in the office, instead of being greeted with welcoming smiles, I was greeted with hateful scowls from all three of the receptionists. I immediately felt uncomfortable when I walked in. Without making eye contact and in a bad tone, the main receptionist asked how she could help. I told her my husband and I had appointments and she said, with a terrible attitude, that one of us would have to reschedule because we arrived late and we had to fill out paperwork. I am fine with having to reschedule, but it was her lack of professionalism that took me back. When I said I didn't understand why we couldn't both be seen, she sarcastically responded. I said "We will just go somewhere else, because you are so rude." And she responds very harshly with "Actually, it's rude to be late!!!" I walked out. Needless to say, I won't be going back and will tell everyone I know in the area to avoid this place unless they want to be made to feel like scum. read more

I visited Dr. May a couple of weeks ago for an eye exam and new glasses. I actually saw her two years prior in her old office, and even though the new office is a bit far from where I live (West Baltimore), it's definitely worth the drive. Dr. May is second to none in her attention to detail and, if you will, exam chair-side manners. I've worn glasses for 20 years and I can't remember anyone being as thorough and knowledgeable as her. She doesn't just go through the motions like a lot of doctors; you can tell that she genuinely cares about what she does. Dr. May is always happy to answer her patients' questions and make sure they understand the process as well as eye health in general. Like another reviewer said, she takes the time to find out more about her patients to help her select the best course of action. Since I sit in front of a computer all day, she recommended I get the blue light blocking lens to make it easier on my eyes, and that made a noticeable difference. The new office is indeed very nice; there's even a Keurig machine for those early morning appointments! Exam rooms are clean and everything seems to be laid out very well. There is a very good selection of frames; maybe not be as many as at a LensCrafters but there is a great range of brands and styles. I tend to be picky when it comes to frames and ended up getting two great looking pairs (sunglasses and regular). The staff is very courteous, professional, and helpful, going the extra mile to adjust the frame to sit perfectly level on my face. All in all, I highly recommend Dr. May and her team, and will definitely be going back. read more

I never write reviews. Ever. I usually rely on others but I thought since I received exceptional service, I owe it to others whom I have relied on for so many reviews as well as this practice. I was seen in an Opthalmologist's office 3 years ago and the experience was horrible from the front desk staff to the doctor and the doctor being incompetent in fitting me correctly for contact lens. A patient shouldn't leave a practice with the contact lens irritating the eye. Anyway. Enough of that. So it's taking me awhile to find a practice. Visionworks in Gambrills has horrible reviews but since it's always the first that populates when you try to find a provider with your insurance I thought I would try it. I was 5 minutes, 5 minutes late for the appointment and they told me I had to reschedule. The doctor had left. I was beyond baffled. Trust the reviews. Another 8 months go by and I need to see someone. Dr May had 5.0 reviews on Yelp and another review board. So I decided to call. If the person who answered their phone was rude, I was done. I was pleasantly surprised. No, not even pleasantly surprised...I was thinking.....wow okay they know customer service!!!!! They took ALL my information over the phone and while I was on the phone verified that my insurance was valid and accepted at their practice. Hallelujah some smart staff. Ok. Today was my appointment. Front desk was awesome! They were kind, looked at you when you talked, were polite and professionally prepped me before the doctor came in the room. The doctor comes in the room and announces herself. I said "what? You're the doctor?" (Honestly those words came out of my mouth!). And she says, yes, with a big smile! Well. You have to know that the doctor had come up to the front desk when I had first walked in, but she was busying herself with work yet still talked to me. I need new glasses and while I was looking at glasses I asked her which ones she liked. She gave me what seemed like her honest opinions. I thought she too worked the front desk!!!! She seemed so down to earth and honest and real and did not have a doctor attitude if you will. Which is why when she walked in the exam room I was baffled. I had the most thorough exam I have ever had and was thrilled. They have a really great selection of eyeglasses so I can also get my glasses at this practice!!
