Our dogs love Dr. Gerard. We love Dr. Gerard! However, his receptionist/wife Lois is the reason the review and rating is negative. Over three years have passed since the covid scare and yet she continues to "demand" people must wear a mask! They lost our business because of her and I'm sure they have probably lost many others. Wait in your car. She takes your card (but doesn't use sanitizer on it) and handles your pet's leash. Yet she says no mask will spread germs?! And she won't allow your pet to be seen unless you wear a mask.... read more

Dr. Gerard is great. He is very thorough in his diagnosis and treatment of my pets. He is also very good at explaining in layman terms what is troubling them and offers various treatment options. Can't ask for a better doctor. I've read the posts here bashing on Lois. Is she a bubbly bouncy wordsmith? No, but she is kind and caring in her way. It's her job to oversee the management of the facility and a big part of that job is to make sure that they receive payment for their services. Dr. Gerard is awesome! We ended up having an unplanned pregnancy with one of our Guinea Pigs. Dr. Gerard answered all of our questions and consulted with other vets when needed. When we first moved to Sumter, we were going to Guignard Animal Clinic and had really poor experiences (we got a new vet each time we went, never the same), especially after they mixed medications for our lab that should NEVER be mixed and she got very sick. After that, we heard good things about Advanced Vet and switched in March 2012. Dr. Gerard is a dream vet! When we first brought our lab in after the medication mishap with Guignard Animal Clinic, he did a thorough exam (she has hip displaysia and torn ACL). He gave us the prognosis and course of treatment. Our lab has been doing amazing on the new medications Dr. Gerard gave us. He is always patient with our dogs (we have a Siberian Husky and a Black Lab mix). The staff is friendly. I love that they have a dry erase board in each room so that Dr. Gerard can break things down for you very clearly. Recently, my husky had a seizure around 9am on Wednesday morning. He's never had seizures before, so I called Advanced Vet in a panic, I was absolutely hysterical. The answering staff took my info and told me the vet would call me back in a minute. Dr. Gerard called me back immediately from his home phone and calmed me down, asked me about his symptoms and asked me to come in with the husky. I found out that Advanced Vet doesn't take Wednesday morning appointments, but he insisted I bring our dog in for a blood test immediately. What an amazing vet to come in on his morning off to see my dog and calm my nerves. I will never forget that. He really cares for his patients. read more

I had an emergency with a new 8 week old puppy. All the Manager (who is the Vets wife) cared about was making sure I had the $100 just to walk in the door! She was not concerned at all about my puppy! I had a very lethargic pup in my arms so I had to agree to pay it because I still didn't know what was wrong with her or if I had time to take her else where. But I thought it was outrageous!! When I saw the Vet, who was much kinder, he told me the puppy was not going to live due to a problem with his heart so I had to have her euthanized:( . Of course I was devastated! I was sent back to the desk and Manager who was running it and of course then charged an Exam fee and fee for Euthanization and disposal bag and told to come back later to pick up the body. No condolences offered. I will never go back there again after the way I was treated and because of the outlandish fee I was charged!! read more

Dr Gerard is a great vet. Office staff is lacking in qty and people skills. Hours change often and are not consistent.

The receptionist up front is very disrespectful, she tried putting a $90 bill on us when we helped a foster carry cats inside, then lied about the test results of a Giardia test. The vet is great but his receptionist is terrible and we will never go back solely because of her. read more

Dr. Gerard is seriously the best veterinarian I have ever taken one of my animals to. You can tell he really cares about his patients. He is extremely knowledgeable and takes the time to explain things to pet parents so that an informed decision as to their furbabies' treatment. His vet techs and the rest of his staff are very courteous and well-trained. I would recommend this veterinary practice to anyone. read more

I have not personally ever been to this vet and have never taken my pet there for any procedures. However, like a previous poster, I did call to get some information on the vet and to find out how much it cost to get a dog neutered. I am new to the area and have been doing computer research and calling vets for half a day. When I called this vet, I was transferred to a person named Lois who said that they could not quote the surgery until they had met the dog and done an examination (which is $40). I said fine, did not even argue, but Lois continued on to say that their facility is not about price and is about quality of care and how I shouldn't choose a vet based on price and that if I were to do that then I shouldn't bring my dog to their facility. I explained that I was doing preliminary research and already weeded some vets out based on reviews and referrals and that I have cared for my dog for over 3 years and have given him excellent care. She continued to lecture me about asking for price quotes and how, at their vet, they value their relationships with their patients; I told her that belittling people and talking down to them does not promote a "good relationship." The conversation was very upsetting to me because I take my responsibilities as a pet parent very seriously and have never sacrificed care for cost. I have never gone to the cheapest vet because the cheapest vet is not usually the best. But, the most expensive, arrogant vet is not always the best either. The sad thing is that I would have been willing to pay a little more for the procedure if this were the best vet. I would have had no problem with waiting until after the initial exam to find out the cost of surgery. I am exactly the kind of pet parent that vet likes to work with. But, she didn't let me say hardly anything before launching into her tirade, before assuming I was some sort of bad pet parent. I will not be taking my baby there because people who are that arrogant most often can't think critically about their work. Also, if you cannot respect enough as a pet parent to not talk to me like I'm a rotten child after only speaking with me on the phone for 2 minutes, then the relationship is already broken. read more

My little carpet shark had to go here since there are only 2 vets that i could find in Sumter for her. The other had horrible reviews and the only compliant that I could find about this one was about the front desk lady. She was pretty nice when I came in very helpful and friendly. The vet himself was great as he took the time to answer all my questions, which where more then a couple. He knew that I was adopting my baby and starting completely new. He was very kind and the staff where great. They worked me into the schedule that day, which was so helpful. read more

After several months of having issues with my pets and not getting them resolved at my vet, I decided to try Dr. Gerard. Through a series of test, he determined exactly what was wrong with my dogs, and hopefully they are on the right track to their best health. He took lots of time with my pets and took time to make sure I understood the diagnosis and best course of treatment. He even called me on a Saturday with results from tests. So far I am very impressed with the entire practice, and I plan to continue having him care for my babies. As far as the reviews I have read regarding the receptionist...She has been nothing but kind and helpful to me and my babies. :-) read more

If I could give negative 5 stars I would this place is awful. I took my pet here and they charged me twice for spaying my one animal, after the problem was fixed they blamed it on me why "I need to be more observant when swiping my card". On top of that staff and ESPECIALLY the manager was so rude and rushed me through the entire process of spaying. I called to see how my animal was doing since she was kept 2 DAYS after her pick up date, the front seat lady said "we're busy right now we'll call you when you can pick her up. Worst place I've ever been. HIGHLY don't recommend it to anyone that truly loves their pets! read more

I would not recommend this veterinary office to anyone. We tried for a week to get an appointment to have our dog spayed and couldn't get anyone to call us back after countless times of calling and leaving a message. They obviously don't want any business or can't handle the workload they already have. They are rude and in my opinion needs to take a customer service class or two. I plan on finding somewhere that treats people with more respect then what I found here. read more
