I've been incredibly happy with the care I've received at Advanced Womens over the last year. Dr Ashley Cummins has been a literal life saver in helping me diagnose a hormone issue. She is open to listening to my personal suggestions and we collaborate together as a team to come up with a solution. Dr Perez & Dr Miller have also been helpful and efficient in getting appointments in a timely manner, getting prescriptions filled, and being open to holistic approaches as well as western medical practices. I've also seen Monika for Botox & Dysport injections and she is a master with a needle. The front desk gals are helpful and kind. I used to use Advanced Women's Health for my OB and Chiropractic needs years ago and I had no issues whatsoever. I believe they have probably had a change in management or something. When I called today to try and schedule an appointment to have my hormones tested I was told they didn't accept my insurance- fair enough- but when I asked how much self pay was I was told they couldn't see me. So even trying to pay in cash I am not able to be seen because they don't accept my insurance- how does this make any sense at all? The women who was helping me couldn't provide any explanation into this and this is completely unacceptable. Imagine trying to give a business money for services but I am unable to because they don't accept my insurance. Totally not ok. read more

I love this office. I found this office over 10 years ago when trying to find a place who would actually listen to my concerns and who I could trust. I made the best choice and have been so happy here. I even referred my daughter. I've never been dismissed or treated like my concerns with my health was nothing. Not only do they listen but they take the time to help figure out the best way possible to help manage your care. I don't feel like just a number, I feel like I'm really cared about. Whenever I call they take my questions and concerns seriously. I had some crazy health issues recently and they have gone over and beyond to make sure I'm well taken care of. I feel like I call more than I ever have with questions but they seem happy to help even though I know they are busy. They are simply amazing. I was referred here by a friend and they have been nothing short of amazing. Coming from MultiCare systems and CHI Franciscan and will NEVER look back. Don't be turned off by the bad reviews, the front desk gets stuff done! They have seen me through injuries, OBGYN issues, the flu, anxiety and the awful winter cold. The nurses are amazing, and empathetic to where I know I am heard. I see Carmela and she is a literal dream. I have been coming to this clinic for 5+ years now and have some loves and hates about this location. First let me say I am in the medical industry, so I tend to be a little more critical possibly.... I love the providers here, Michelle Atkins (ARNP), has single handedly gotten me through my anxiety issues. I used to LOATH coming in for my girly annual, get all worked up, but she is so amazing, now I dont really even think about it. She is the quickest, gentlest Dr I have seen yet. The other Dr's and ARNP's I have seen over the years for different thing, and really they are all great. They take time, answer questions, ect. They all get 5 stars. My complaints come from the front. There has always seemed to be a missing communication link. UN-returned emails/phone call's, test results never shared, the list goes on and on. It always seems as though you are inconveniencing them, and really all they want to help with is booking the appointment and checking the insurance. Again, this is what I do for a living, so I KNOW it is not that hard to just be nice, say hello, how is your day, just take a few seconds to give a crap. They get a 3 In their defense, I think they are either understaffed, or really busy, and they have gotten a little better over the years. And really I am not going in to see them, so I deal to see a good provider. read more

This office gets 2 stars strictly because of the doctors and nurses. They are amazing. But the billing department is HORRIBLE. I HAD been going here for over 10 years. Then roughly 2 years ago something started to change.... or they got a new billing person. Called in December. Asked to pay my ENTIRE bill... as in everything that was owed from my last 3 visits. I was told my account had a zero balance. Its now March. Checked my mail and i was told that i had an outstanding balance over 97 dollars from October that was being sent to collections and they will refuse to treat me ever again. I am aware i can not blame the billing department on the post office not getting me my mail in a timely manner BUT i did not receive one phone call telling me they were about to send me to collections and asking me to pay my bill. about 3 years ago i had a phone call asking me to pay my bills, it was for 20 dollars... the old lady still called to see if i would pay my bill. Honestly i am glad I will never be seen by these people again. I cant handle dealing with their office staff anymore. Sad to leave Jessica and Risa but done with the rest of them! I've been going to Advanced Women's Health (AWH) for the last 9 years and I'm very pleased with the care I receive. When I first started seeing Darla (love her), the front desk staff weren't very friendly and at times were down right rude both when trying to schedule appointments and when coming into the office. My friend, who had been going to AWH and referred me to them, stopped going because of one too many issues with the front desk staff. I stuck it out because I really liked Darla and I'm glad I did because in 2005 or 2006 some type of change occurred at the front desk and I haven't had any issues since. I like that it's a relatively small office, they run on schedule and are responsive when I have questions or need clarification. Darla is fantastic. I'm not a big fan of the annual exams (I'm sure most women aren't) and I really appreciate Darla's approach. The exam itself is quick and painless but she does take the time to find out how I'm doing. She explains things in simple terms and is direct and to the point with a wonderful sense of humor. I hit a major age milestone a couple of years ago and had a mini breakdown in her office because of some changes in my health. Her balance between being caring and compassionate but expressing "don't feel sorry for yourself" coupled with some good humor made all the difference for me. Jessica is my general practioner and is very friendly and knowledgeable. I feel like she genuinely cares about my health issues and concerns and that we're working together on my health care. I really find it hard to understand these previous remarks. I have been a patient at Advanced Women's Health for years now. Risa Halford is my provider. She is wonderful in every way possible. Knowledgeable,kind,caring and always takes the time to listen ,understand and help me through my long years of migraines,etc. The ladies at the front desk as well as the assistants are all just terrific. And I have Never had to wait longer than ten minutes to be called in to be seen. They always call me back right away whether I have questions or concerns or they do. Since their website does not allow me to email them this full response to their many "reminder" calls, I am posting this to Yelp. No only do I hope to save other patients from my experience, but it's feedback they should know about. I will not visit this clinic again- ever. I was given the wrong diagnosis over the phone. It caused me alot of stress and quite a bit of crying... thinking I was headed towards cancer or, at the very least, a painful procedure. If you want the full story, here it is: To AWH: I came to your office some time ago for a colposcopy. I was treated by Darla, and really liked her. In fact, I returned to your office for follow ups and other issues because of Darla. At first, I didn't like that each time I was called for my results, if I had a simple question I felt I was being "upselled" with the standard response of "would you like to make an appointment with the doctor". Although this was a little irritating, I let it slide because I really liked the care I was getting from Darla. My first Colposcopy came back with low grade dysplasia. It was explained to me that it wasn't anything to worry about immediately, that I needed to come back in a few months and it may very well go away on its own. Ok, I got that. I was also told that if it didn't, then that would be more of an issue. I came back some months later (my last visit to your clinic). Had the same procedure & a test for HPV. Days later I get a call from someone in your office and here is how it went: AWH: "Your results are back and there are no changes" Me: "What? Oh no! So I still have that dysplasia....?" AWH: "Yes" Me: "But it isn't any worse?" (now I am worried) AWH: "No, there are no changes. It's just the same" Me (now very upset, in my office, nearly in tears because I think this is all leading to cancer or some painful treatment): "What does that mean?" AWH: " Would you like to make an appointment with Darla to discuss?" Me: "I don't know, what am I supposed to do?" AWH: "Come back in December" Me: "I don't understand. Just come back in a few months? That's it?" AWH: "Yes" (now sounding quite irritated with all my questions and I get the impression she wants to end this conversation) Me: "What about the HPV test?" (holding back tears, wishing I had someone with an ounce of compassion that I could be talking to) AWH: "You tested positive for 13 different strains of HPV" Me: "WHHAT??!!! How is that possible? 13 different types of HPV! And Darla said to just come back in December? I don't understand. How could I have 13 strains of HPV? Really? 13 strains??!!" AWH: "Yes. That's what your results say. Would you like to make an appointment with the doctor?" Me: "No, goodbye" I sat in my office, door closed, and tried to calm down. I couldn't. i was so afraid. Finally, in tears, I ran out of the building and went home. At first I was just scarred. Darla had said that if I tested positive for HPV or the dysplasia didn't go away, then we had to address it. Why am I getting pushed off until December? Isn't this serious? Is it normal to have 13 strains of a virus? If I have 13 strains, doesn't that mean cancer at some point? This is all going through my head and I was very upset. I was also angry with the coldness and lack of advice or the professionalism of a call from Darla herself. At this point I think I am getting cancer! I would think a call from the physician was in order. How dare this clinic try to "upsell" me with another office visit! I later made an appointment with my Naturopath. I had your office fax my records. Thank goodness I did that! My Naturopath sat with me for over an hour, going over every detail and what it all meant. Your office gave me the WRONG information. My results were CLEAN from the Colposcopy- NO dysplasia! In addition, I did not have 13 different strains of HPV. I tested positive for one or more of 13 strains, not ALL 13! In fact, a test was not done to narrow down the exact strain or strains. All that stress and all those tears for nothing. All because some heartless, unskilled, employee wanted to get me off the phone and had no idea what she was reading in the first place. All this because you don't have the personal care enough to have actual physicians call their patients. In fact, the first time in my life I have had a clinic that had such a policy. It's heartless and completely irresponsible to have this policy and I have lost all trust in the competence of your clinic. All I can say is thanks for nothing. I will never return and will never recommend your clinic. So you can stop calling me for the "friendly reminders!" read more

Before we started she asked if I had any questions. Personally I was very scared going into the clinic and every step of the way I felt safe, they let you know everything would be fine. No doctors here, just nurses. I had a mammogram and biopsy done at another location, Womens Health held my results from me until I made an appointment, paid a co-pay and charged my insurance for an office visit, waited longer in the waiting room then it did to have my results given to me, in under a minute, could and should have been done on the phone. Glad I found an actual doctor. They also refused to help with my disability case, refusing three times to fill out the needed form, six months later after I hand delivered it, they said they could not do it, wasting precious time for my case. They never called me to say that they would not do it. Skip this place unless you need botox or a massage. read more

I saw ARNP Michelle Atkins and wanted to make her my primary care after feeling dissatisfied with my old Doctor.as a paying, insured consumer, I was denied & she refused to accept me as a patient! She told me to go back to my old doctor and get my blood pressure under control first & that I was too much of a liability. Well that sucked & I ended up finding a different PCP. I had a mammogram done and needed to have a biopsy done. They would not sign off on my biopsy order because they have not seen me for this condition! YOU told me its time for a mammogram, what is it you want to discuss with me and take my money for that I don't already know? I am beyond frustrated. Being told you need to have a biopsy is scary enough! I will be looking for a different clinic for sure, and I would never recommend this clinic! read more

I am perplexed by this place. I have been going here for over five years. I called today to ask if they would see me to rule out the chance that I had the early symptoms of the flu (woke up with body aches, and a low fever). My thought is that I may need tamaflu and figured it was a toss up between my PCP and emergent care. I called and asked if that would be okay. I said I could take whatever time is open. The receptionist was super friendly and said that I could come in. I got there and was informed I had an outstanding balance from March of 2017 that never generated a statement. That was a bit alarming but since they didn't charge me late fees or anything- how could they really if they never informed me of my bill- I paid and waited a few minutes before being seen. The place was practically empty so I figured I made a good choice, instead of being one of the many that flood emergency care clinics this time of year, I was kicking them some business in a unused time slot. I was quickly seen, vitals checked, and waited for the doc. While waiting for the doc I heard the nurse complain loudly about me being there. I get that it maybe annoying but that's the benefit of having a PCP. My insurance and money pays the same. Plus the place was empty and I made my intentions clear when I called. I would have been happy to go somewhere else if I knew I would be shamed for going to my doctor when I went to do the socially responsible thing and rule out the flu. Besides for a place that peddles purely cosmetic "treatments" for skin and eyes lashes, I find it ridiculous that their staff would trivialize something like infectious illness and (second handedly) attack the patient for being concerned about their health. It's unfortunate because the other nurse, the receptionist, and my regular doctor, is super friendly. Women caring for women! Appointments are easy to get and I rarely have to wait longer than 5-10 minutes. I don't feel rushed and there is always a verbal and written plan at the end of each visit. Calls are made to remind me when it's time for lab work and/or follow-up appointments. If I'm ill I get in the same day. The annual visits are gentle...pretty much non stressful. read more

I felt compelled to write a review here to try and provide a more accurate picture of this clinic-most Yelp reviews tend to feel strongly one way or the other and I am in the opposite boat as the other reviewers here. I too work in healthcare and that is exactly the reason why I choose to get my care here- nurse practitioners provide such a different care experience then seeing a doctor. I specifically see Jessica, and from the first appointment I had with her I was amazed at the amount of care and time she spent with me. Jessica did not try to rush in and out like many doctors seem to do; she takes the time to sit down with me, go over all of my cocerns, and provide me with very helpful information. She is really outstanding and I would highly recommend her. When she has not been available and I needed to get in quickly I have seen the other ARNP's and they were delightful to work with as well. One of the big perks of going to this clinic is also that they only see women, something I truly appreciate. In my experiences with the other staff members (front office, MA's) I have had zero issues. In fact whenever I come in I am greeted with a smile and I rarely have to wait forever to get into the exam room (something too common in most doctor offices).I can always count on them to give me a reminder call, and generally when I call and leave a message with the MA I get a call back that same day. They have always called me as soon as a test result comes in, and are often able to get me in to see someone fairly quickly. Another bonus is that they have some hours on Saturday, which is really helpful for full time workers like myself. Lastly I have to say I am a VERY hard stick when it comes to getting my blood drawn. I have been to the ER many times and not even the best on their teams can draw my blood. I told the MA at AWH she likely would not be able to draw my blood-but she gave it 1 try and was in no problem. This is a huge advantage for me because I can always just get my blood drawn here rather than a lab, and I never need to worry anymore about having to get poked to death until something finally works. Overall I would recommend highly AWH (and Jessica in particular) for any woman wanting good healthcare from a small and personal clinic. read more

I have been seeing Darla Smedley for years as she has steered me toward better health. She is just so sweet and caring.

Today has been the absolute worst day of my life. I went to AWH to receive the results of my cat scan and long story short we need to do a biopsy to find out if my tumor is cancerous or benign, pretty serious stuff. About three hours after I left my appointment I called back to schedule for the biopsy/to get more information. I was put on hold and transferred around to numbers that just went straight to voicemail multiple times. After my eighth call they finally got me to someone and I was told they had already sent in the order for my biopsy hours ago to TRA (another medical office where I got the cat scan). So, I called TRA and they said they have absolutely nothing on file for this order. The woman at TRA gave me a direct fax number so they wouldn't have any issues. Called AWH for the ninth time and they were so rude that I asked them to send my biopsy order to the correct fax number. They kept putting me on hold and giving me sass for calling so many times. I NEED TO KNOW IF I HAVE CANCER I FEEL LIKE THAT IS A GOOD ENOUGH REASON TO BE CONSISTENT AND MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS DONE PROPERLY. I am already stressed out enough about my results, this did not help! Tell your customers when you're going to be putting them on hold, have a kind and warm tone when speaking with someone on the phone, try to be a little understanding, let your customers know you're going to transfer them, be candid if you made a mistake. That's all I want, just a little more respect in this stressful time of my life. Thank you. read more

What is up with the billing here?? I went into the office several months ago and did not have my insurance card. I called my insurance company and they spoke with the receptionist and provided all the claim filing information that was needed on the day of my visit. I was told by the receptionist that everything was 100% covered and that I did not even have to pay a co-pay. She also said that, as it was my first visit, she made an exception for me to be seen with out my insurance card, but to be sure to bring it in the future. Well then, about a month later, I got a bill for the full amount of my visit. I checked into it and realized they billed the wrong division of my insurance company. I called and had a very difficult time trying to explain the situation because everyone there claims they wouldn't have taken me without my ins. card. However they made an exception for me, because they took me without my insurance card! Finally I got them to listen to me after I called them four times. I eventually just hit the option for the front desk and the receptionist got me through to Kim in billing. I faxed over my insurance card and detailed information about how to bill my insurance. I waited a week, called them back another two times with out a call back and then spoke with the receptionist who claimed they never got it! I sent the info again, and after pestering them again, I finally got an answer from the receptionist confirming they got the documents. I then called again to follow up and they told me I had to send the info to the laboratory too. I called the lab and gave them the info. Now, several months later, I got a call from their billing department saying they are ready to send me to collections!! I have never got another bill besides the initial one. I have also checked with my insurance and they never filed a claim with them! What is wrong with this company?!?! The staff is really sweet and I really enjoyed my experience during my visit. I was planning to make the office my main doctor's office, but this whole situation has ruined it for me. I will not be back and I highly recommend that everyone else not go here. read more

This place used to be my favorite! The doctors are excellent and very helpful. That being said, the front desk people and the nurses are just plain rude. They belittle you and make it seem like nothing is their fault. Their billing department is horrible as well. They sent me a certified latter saying something was wrong when I'm reality there was just a bill I had to pay that I was unaware of. I would never come back to this place again. HORRIBLE!!! First off you have to wait DAYS to hear back about test results. Even when your results are in they will not call you. I literally called them daily and left messages asking if my results were in. When it comes to something like your first pregnancy after being told you are infertile and have low progesterone it took them 2 weeks to give me an answer as to wtf was going on with my body. After telling Michelle and Miranda my concerns about my low progesterone levels (diagnosed by a different dr) they waved it off like it was no big deal and just told me to wait for my blood test results. (I ended up having a miscarriage because of their poor/lack of care). They didn't tell me what I was supposed to do or what was going to be happening to my body. You cannot talk to the receptionist over the phone about anything besides just scheduling appointments. They charge way more for a pregnancy blood test than other clinics. Just for price comparison they charge $150 when MultiCare charges $85. There's just so many things wrong with this clinic, I was really hoping they would be better than others. This practice has an excellent front office staff, medical assistant staff, and providers. Usually you can't get all 3 in a doctors office. Everyone there is so polite warm and discreet, I now have my primary care doctor at that office as well. I'm a nurse and my husband is a surgeon. I know about both sides. Look below in comments to see Kady W. I have had the same problem!!! My primary insurance does not cover AWH, but my secondary does. When I called billing to give them my primary insurance information, they told me they do NOT send claims to insurance carriers that do not cover them. They said it's not possible. That sounded crazy, so I called my primary and my secondary insurance companies. They both verified that this clinic is very wrong for saying that. Even though my primary insurance carrier does not cover them, that is no problem, advanced women's health just needs to send my claim to them so they can deny it, and will send it on to my secondary which is sitting there waiting to pay. So after making sure I had the correct information, I tried calling them back for over three weeks. Left messages multiple times a week. I finally had to call through the front desk to get a live person who gave me the email to somebody in billing. And I emailed them pictures my insurance card. They called me back and again told me that it's impossible to send my claim to my primary insurance carrier. So I called my primary insurance carrier AGAIN and they said that this clinic is crazy! They gave me the information to give to advanced women's health so they can send my claim over. Which is literally a phone number and then my insurance will take care of the rest. I've never dealt with a billing department that is so lazy and incompetent. So unless your primary insurance covers this location, DO NOT COME HERE! They will ignore your calls, lie to you, and make you do all of the work. My claim would be in collections if I didn't call them multiple multiple times as well as my own insurance carrier, and do all of their work for them. AWH billing is HORRIBLE. read more

Friends, While I write for the local community professionally I must say my review takes a more personal direction. I would like to share my experience with AWH and allow you to come to your own conclusion. My reputation and recommendations are focused on finding the good in people and places we should enjoy. I have always enjoyed going to the doctor, medicine fascinates me. In fact, my family tree has a couple in it. I've often thought about pursuing a medical degree however, my free-spirited personality prevents me from shacking myself to corporate policies. I think that good medicine stems from trust. If you have trust that works both ways everyone is happy and you get results. Going to your doctor doesn't have to be enjoyable but it should never make you feel vulnerable and taken advantage of. This is what has happened in my experience. After months of researching local physicians, I chose AWH based on credentials. I should say here that anyone can look good on paper. Chemistry however cannot be exaggerated with fancy degrees and titles. It seems as though the front office lacks personality and you have a feeling like your there on their time and whenever they can get to you they do. Why are you billing my insurance company for time I'm not getting? Wanting me to come in to discuss lab results that a doctor should provide over the phone. Not an MA (medical assistant) who can't provide an accurate interpretation. The front office staff makes you feel like its rude for you to be there. They care about my insurance and my copay. They lack eye contact and a few times they forgot that patients share there space. I'm at my doctors office not on the set of Jerry Springer, watch your language and act professional. Another problem, I like to play a part in my healthcare as should you. Patients should be active participants in their health plan. Health care regulations and office policies are not always the same. Most people don't realize that they do have options. If you chose not to pursue a symptom or go in for expensive imaging, the doctor should improvise and offer a solution. Now don't get me wrong, doctors usually need a plethora of information to tell you that you have cancer or strep throat (insert sarcasm here) when sometimes there are alternatives. The fact that I feel forced to pursue diagnostics to treat my symptoms when my current long term therapy has been successful is preposterous. Telling me office policies dictate my decisions, ridiculous. Unfortunately doctors are so afraid of legal penalties they try hard to cover themselves through an abundance of unnecessary testing and follow ups. Another appointment?!? Seriously? Why is my time not considered valuable to my doctor? It's valuable to me, to my boss who doesn't understand why I need to take of work for another appointment just to get lab results. Like I stated earlier, to me trust is my most important component of my doctor. This place is so dictated by policies and copays it really lacks that "feel good" atmosphere. If you can get past the front desk you'll find a couple really good physicians. That's the worst part of it all. Now I have to spend hours researching a new doctor. It is sad physicians do not treat patients like consumers of their own healthcare. They simply treat you as consumers. Medicine sadly, has become for-profit and this place could be the poster child. Very un-satisfied. I called as a new patient telling them I wanted to be seen for a well woman check up. I get there and the first thing the lady tells me is that I have a co-pay. she let me know I could lower it by calling the number on the back of my insurance card but that I couldn't be seen till I paid it. I didn't have time to call before being called back so I paid the $50. I get back in my room and what I think is the dr, comes in to see me. She asks a few questions then sends me to another place I need to make an appointment for. I luckily (after calling 8 places) got an app the same day. I called the next day to get the results. ( I was told to) and I was told theres no dr on site to read them to me. A little later I call back to see if a dr is in and she says the same thing. She then tells me they are closed random Tuesdays and there was someone in earlier but shes gone now. ( why not tell me that to start?!) My over all experience was terrible. I got a huge bill and paid a copay for them to not do what I went in for, then send me somewhere else to give me the run around for days. I will not be going back. read more

I have been going to AWH for over 10 years now. I've been seen for general wellness, gynecology, massage, and acupuncture. I've been seen by every practitioner many times. Over the span of 10 years, scheduling many different types of appointments with many different people, I have had to cancel on the same day a total of 3 times. I received a letter in the mail saying they refuse to see me any longer. Good riddance! To be quite honest, I've been meaning to find a real doctor for years. The practitioners are nice enough, but to be brutally honest have not got a solid grasp on medicine. I have encountered someone looking things up on their phone to diagnose me, I have been misdiagnosed, and given obviously false information (which was confirmed to be false later by a specialist). They have been good to refill prescriptions and give referrals and that's the size of it. A previous review stated: just go there for Botox or a massage. I have to go a step further and say stay away from the massage therapist (trust me!) and they referred me out for Botox- so they couldn't even do that. read more

Eww I hate that they call themselves advanced. I have had multiple issues with them. Firstly I came to this location because my old doctor wasn't working in Tacoma anymore, at first I had a good impression since the office looks really nice and the ladies up front have good customer service (but definitely aren't the smartest in the bunch). Since I was a first time patient they made me schedule a primary care physical berore I could be seen for what I came for. I have never heard of this b.s before in my life. So I scheduled an appt for primary care but the ditz up front made my appt with a gyno, so when I show up for my appt there was no one to see me for primary care because the ditz made a mistake. I had to wait about 45 min to be seen and I didn't want to reschedule and further prolong being seen for my actual gyno exam. After the confusion my physical and gyno exam went fine but later they billed me fully and said they couldn't confirm my insurance info over the phone and I had to bring in my card. Something I've also never had an issue with else where. So I had to come in just to work that out. Now months later I am calling to make an appt and have been trying to get through for about 30 min now and no one is answering the phone . HATE IT read more
