Every time I go to my current dentist, I am so thankful I am no longer going to Advanta. I went here for 5+ years. Like others, I was told that I was grinding my teeth and needed a bite guard (first time I had ever heard this) and I seem to remember being referred to a TMJ specialist in their building?) I had cavities to be filled and crowns to be added, but there was an unending list of crown replacements that were needed as well. Looking back, I wish I had gotten a second opinion on some of this. I had a crown fall off (not the temporary, a permanent). One thing I clearly remember is how quick the actual cleanings were. Some time scraping around with the metal pick, followed by a quick polishing, aggressive flossing, and then the dentist showing up to poke around and pronounce a laundry list of things that needed to be done. Found a new dentist 7 years ago. We took care of a few major things in a single visit under sedation, and ever since then it has just been about bi-annual cleanings and x-rays. I am shocked after each visit that there are no new cavities to fill or crowns to be added or replaced. The first time I had a cleaning at the current dentist, I was a little shocked when they spent 30-45m very carefully cleaning my teeth with an electronic tool as well as the pick. If anything looked inflamed they quickly offer numbing gel for my gums. The polishing was quick and followed with the fluoride treatment, but the entire visit for basic preventative care takes far longer than I ever remember it taking at Advanta. read more

Absolutely terrible. DO NOT GO HERE! Dr. Razavi is the WORST dentist I've ever had. She is extremely money hungry and insisted that I needed several crowns. I could barely afford it but I shelled out the money thinking these crowns were necessary, but I was in pain for months afterwards. I left her for another dentist, who told me that some of the crowns she put in were unnecessary and I would have been fine with just fillings. Dr. Razavi also did an extremely big, wonky filling on one of my teeth. This is all from 2 years ago, and since leaving, their office has called me multiple times. My experience was very similar to what other patients have described in one star reviews. I was a patient at Advanta for over two years, and I wish I had left sooner! A few red flags: Staff were very pushy with referrals to their partner gum specialist and insistent that I needed regular costly gum cleaning procedures. I had a couple of cavities filled, and the fillings fell out, but the dentist said not to worry about it and left the teeth as is, which was strange. I hate this place and I was astounded to read so many experiences similar to mine which indicate a truly systemic predatory business practice. Like others who have reviewed, I also take great care of my teeth. I have *never* gone to a dentist prior to this one who tried to upsell me on so much unnecessary stuff and tell me there were so many things wrong with my teeth -- and mind you these, are not gentle recommendations. They rely on scare tactics to try to persuade you to get these upgrades -- every possible thing they can upsell you on, from the smallest thing like a prescription fluoride mouthwash, all the way up to gum surgery, they will push you to get. It's never "these are the things that you can do on your own to improve your oral health"... it's always "if you don't get ______ soon, your teeth might fall out." I was also given the hard sell on the following things: crowns and veneers, laser whitening, sedation deep cleaning, a mouth guard, and GUM SURGERY (and yes, they went ahead and booked me a consult with the periodontal surgeon despite my misgivings). Also, I complained about my bite being a little off and they immediately jumped on that and said "we can fix that by filling in the dent in your molars." There was ZERO transparency about what my insurance would and wouldn't cover, and in fact, no mention of an additional charge or quote for the work. They just tacked it onto my bill when I was on my way out, and I was completely blindsided by the charge. Finally, not to mention the actual cleaning itself being painful as hell, and this is after I told them I have sensitive teeth -- some of the picking made me jump out of my seat. These people are out to get your money and could give a crap about your wallet or your teeth. Just wanted to chime in to say that the experiences of those who gave negative ratings are 100% true. I went here first for a simple checkup and they told me I needed a crown and a very expensive inlay. After getting both, I moved back to SD and got a check up from my hometown dentist. They were shocked by the amount of aggressive work done, especially on someone my age. These overdiagnoses not only are expensive, they can actively hurt the health of your teeth. Getting a crown when you do not need to can harm your gums and nerves unnecessarily. This is an incredible breach of patient trust. And called and bothered me about deep cleaning and crowns. I switched dentists after the 2nd normal cleaning. And my new confirmed that I do no need deep cleaning nor crowns!! BE careful out there, if your insurance approves crowns and deep cleaning...they will milk you for it. And mstost insurance approves one or two crowns a year. Starting from the moment I walked into The clinic I was told I need deep cleaning, I grind my tooth too much(which I never do) blah blah blah. I've always been good about going to the dentist and taking care of my teeth. Recently relocated to the Bay Area after 4 years away. I'm told I need thousands of dollars in crowns and fillings, as well as periodontal work. Had a bad feeling about her assessment so I got a second opinion. So glad I did. Second dentist told me the areas to keep an eye on for the future but stressed that nothing needed to be done for awhile. Additionally, he said that the previous recommendations would have resulted in getting rid of lots of healthy tooth. I visit this office twice a year and take really good care of my teeth. What's troubling is that the dentists here care only about money. Instead of laying out options for me, they use this rhetoric of "you need to get this done" and say things like "how have you not taken care of this yet?" In a single visit, they said I needed to get the following: 1. They told me that I need to get a crown to replace a filling that they put in in my previous visit. 2. They told me I grind my teeth at night and that I need to get my teeth molded so I can start wearing a mouth guard in my sleep. None of my previous dentists have ever told me that. I've slept in the same room with siblings, roommates, and my wife and none of them said I grind my teeth. 3. They told me I need to get fluoride brushed on my teeth when I already use toothpaste that contains fluoride. The funny thing is that my wife got her check-up right before me and they said they exact same thing. At the end of our visit, we walked out with a $3,000 quote of what are next appointments were going to be. This is especially appalling to me because I am always in a vulnerable place coming to a dentist and there's a lot of trust placed in these experts, and I feel like they abuse this trust. I understand that health care providers are also a business, but I think this place is just in it for the profits. They don't care about our wellness and what is reasonable. I see everyone's reviews and I wish I had read them before I went, I had a treatment of four root canals and the staff charged me too much saying my insurance was 50%, I stood there for 30 minutes explaining to them that it was 80%. They over charged me and then refunded at the end of my visit. Dr. Sepideh Razavi told me she would put medicine on my teeth for free for the mistake‍ as a consumer I have a right to complain to my dental plan and I did. Yesterday Dr. Razavi called me yelling and going all crazy saying why did I complain‍It's my right and you over charged me! Buyer Beware: This place is an over diagnosis pump-your-insurance dental shop. I went here to get a second opinion on a diagnosis from my initial out of network dentist. I somehow walked out being recommended two crowns on two different molars, a referral to a perio (gums), and an upsell on a "medical grade" mouth guard due to my "extreme teeth grinding". They also pushed "deep cleanings" as if they are somehow different than a regular dental cleaning. My friends, family, and girlfriend have all told me I do not grind my teeth, and one of the molars that "needed a crown" was sensitive only because I do happen to have slightly receded gums there. The other molar "that needed a crown" was addressed with a simple filling by my original dentist. read more

After being a client here for many years, I finally said enough is enough. Most of the time, you grin and bear the visit to the dentist. You might even put up with dental assistants that aren't that great, lack attention to detail, and sometimes ones that are just not that competent. When you tell your Dr respectfully (Dr. Naser) that you would like a filling (where there was one previously) instead of a crown that he just assumes you consent to and that Dr argues with you repeatedly and raises his voice at you; you walk out the door. How's that for professionalism!? Pay attention to all the critiques here because they are all fairly accurate when I look back and compare with my own experience. I have had at least 4 crowns done here and can say each experience has been a horrible one with the work being low quality. I had to have two of those crowns redone with one coming loose and another that cracked. They also tried to charge me for the replacement when it was clearly the quality of work. I am a pretty patient person, but I was not about to go through another crown with these guys. Most people just assume they should do whatever their dentist tells them to do, but please don't be naive. This is also a business and sometimes what is recommended is not what is necessary or a good fit for YOU. From an article about bad/fraudulent dentists: - The right dental health partner for you is the dentist who is wholly concerned with your overall health and not the health of their pocketbook. - The wrong dentist can wreak havoc on your mouth and do permanent damage with too much work you don't need. One hundred percent agree with all the reviewers who said this place is scammy and overdiagnoses. I have never been diagnosed with so many issues. I had four fillings done at once, though I'd gotten some 6 months prior. They filled a chipped tooth that wasn't a cavity. I chipped it more than a decade ago and no dentist has filled it until Advanta. I was told to get a deep clean, and I asked for a night guard. My coworkers went here too and got the same recommended treatments. I have military health care, so it took Advanta almost 4 months to get the paperwork correct, but I applaud them for never giving up. When Advanta finally submitted it correctly, the insurance approved the request within hours I was able to get the fillings, mouth guard, and an alternative treatment instead of a deep clean at no cost. My insurance will completely cover what is medically necessary, and they wouldn't cover the deep clean. When I came in for the making of the night guard, the dentist further diagnosed me with bone loss and recommended that I see the periodontist who comes in once a month and doesn't take my insurance. I got a referral printout but nothing was marked on it except the tooth number. Not very helpful. This is the only dentist I have ever been to that told me my teeth were in danger off falling out. All that being said, I got everything I needed from this facility, and insurance covered it all. The fillings and night guard were well made. I believe the Advanta dentists provide good care but overdiagnose to make more money. I wouldn't recommend this dentist if you have dental expenses. Just echoing the other warnings about being milked for cash. I had one appointment here after going onto a new dental plan and before any examination, the *receptionist* was trying to sign me up for a $200+ consultation with a specialist of some kind. Through the appointment they repeatedly pushed a periodontal graft even though my previous dental plan's dentist (far better reviews, but not convenient from my new job) had been monitoring it closely and didn't consider it a problem. Of course there'd be a $200+ consultation fee. And yes, crowns galore. All along with what felt like some pretty rough treatment, as if to make me feel like there were more problems in my teeth. Stay away. Or join up and lie as hell on your income, saying you're like some part-time admin assistant on a $30k salary. (Though not sure that would stop them from pushing those expensive procedures.) read more

I can still barely chew on the right side of my mouth and am struggling to find a new dentist for fear another terrible job will be done. TERRIBLE!!!! STAY AWAY AND BE WARE!!!! The staff here is poorly trained, negligent and does not care about the well being of their patients! I came here for the first time for a simple dental cleaning and the hygienist tried to x-ray me without putting on the lead vest first! That would expose me to radiation known to cause cancer. When I insisted she get the vest she begrudgingly did so. She then went ahead with the x-rays and did them in such a way that I had s slipping headache for 3 days after the appointment. I have severe dental anxiety and just moved to the Bay Area and found this office, and boy did I get lucky. They never made me feel bad for my anxiety and everyone in the office was so kind and caring. Dr Razavi even called me this morning to check in how I was doing after yesterday's appointment. I went to them for at least 5 years due to convenient location but the quality of the dentistry is poor. The dentist do their own cleaning which is just a quick once over unless you do the "deep cleaning" rip off. As I have very good oral hygiene, I put up with that. Sadly, now that I've relocated and have a great dentist, she is having to replace several of my latest crowns from Advanta docs.....sloppy margins and leaking. It's. ice to have a great hygienist again too. I agree, the docs are "nice" but they are not excellent by any stretch. Most people hate going to the dentist, but I love it! I find sitting back in those comfy chairs nice and relaxing and I'm a sucker for the goodies they give you at the end. Plus it certainly helps that I've never had to deal with any serious dental problems. However, after my first appointment with Dr. Razavi, I was very surprised to hear the enormous list of things she pushed on me: - X-Rays - Night guard for teeth grinding - Fix receding gum line - Special mouth rinse - Invisline (I'll admit, I have a little gap between my front teeth) - Teeth Whitener My teeth aren't perfectly white, but I don't have any stains or anything and I found it offensive how she just assumed I wanted to get them whitened without even asking me. I also found it strange how she kept pushing this special mouth rinse on me. I asked if I could just buy the Longs store brand and she gave me some BS answer about her stuff being stronger and I had signs of oncoming gingivitis. The whole thing seemed pretty shady so I told them I only wanted the cleaning and X-Rays, and I'd have to think about the other stuff. 6 months later I went and found a different dentist for my cleaning (and also to get a second opinion). I went to Dr. Vincek and he said I had great teeth and didn't need anything special done! I'll admit that everyone I encountered at Advanta seemed really nice. They also have ample parking and it's nice to watch TV while they work. However, when it comes down to it, by far the most important thing your dentist should do is take care of your teeth. It's important to trust your dentist and not constantly question if you really need whatever they are suggesting or if they are just looking for more money. It hate to think of all the time and money I would have wasted (plus pain I would have endured!) if I had stayed with Advanta! read more

I've had some nightmare dentist experiences in the past and was nervous about choosing a new dentist having recently moved to the Bay Area. I read a lot of reviews before going to Dr. Razavi, which I am so glad I did! Dr. Razavi is an exceptionally competent dentist who takes the time to explain all the details about her procedures, and importantly for me, the *reasoning* behind her recommendations. Her explanations really highlight her experience and make me feel that she actually cares about what's best for me, not just trying to upsell me on unnecessary cosmetic procedures (like another dentist who tried to convince me to get veneers once). On a related note, I was fully expecting to have the "deep clean" pushed on me from reading some of the negative reviews here but no one even mentioned it to me. In fact, I went so far as to ask Anna at the front desk about it and she simply said that it's not necessary unless Dr. Razavi determines that I have a particular need for it. I should also mention that Anna was very accommodating when I had an issue paying with my HSA debit card for the first time--she graciously allowed me an extra few days to sort it out with Fidelity rather than demanding another form of payment before I left. Re: bedside manner Dr. Razavi is very warm, friendly, and reassuring when I was nervous for my 4 fillings that I had this week. She was super careful with the drill and asked me if I wanted to sit up and take a break to rest my jaw between fillings. Everything was painless and she polished down my fillings perfectly, so I didn't have to go back for any adjustments to my bite. Will definitely be coming back! read more

Had one visit, they did x-rays but did not clean my teeth. Dentist was recommending services that I really do not need. Thankfully I was able to see my regular dentist who cleaned my teeth and said that everything was fine. Bottom line they only care about making $$$ and pushing unnecessary services. Nat B's review from February 2015 is pretty spot on. I have used this dentist several times over the last 5 years due to their convenient location; however, I have always felt like they are trying to upsell me on different things - especially the 'deep clean' which is not covered by insurance and costs a bunch of money. It seems that this one service is of high profit to them because I have never been in that office without hearing something about the deep clean from the dentist, the aids, and Anna, the purported CFO of this operation. On top of these inappropriate sales strategies, their rates are up to 50% higher than other dentists around the Bay. Once I confirmed my suspicions about the exorbitant rates recently, I finally had enough and decided to take my business elsewhere. It's too bad because I do like the dentists (Dr. Naser & Dr. Razavi), but in the end, the friendly dentists don't make up for the high rates and poor customer service from the admin people (all emails sent to me from this office with quotes and dental records did not even address my name or say anything - they just had attachments as if sent by a machine). read more

"Previous dental work is... 'interesting...' Jaw movement is... 'different...' Evidence of dental caries is... 'FABULOUS!'..." Sometimes being "normal" and having less is a good thing... Some time ago, I pulled a Robert Johnson and traded my "useful" for "funny." Well, it's time to make amends. Dentist reviews are as serious as you get. I went to Advanta Dental for the first time today. Previously, I had been going to an out-of-network provider, and was being reamed up the ass with costs. Service is quick and professional. I heard a lot of "how are you doing"s, which is a good thing. I told them I had sensitive gums and they took this into account. The flossing was well-controlled. I know this sounds weird, but if you have slightly sensitive gums, you'll understand. Each room is fitted with Aquos televisions, which is cool. They have fresh cut grass scented soap in the bathroom. It really does smell like fresh cut grass. By the way, I discovered awhile back that I'm the type of person that needs a little more anethesia during procedures. Also important to note was that I discovered this while having my teeth drilled. Finally, I'd just like to comment on how gross it is that the x-ray machines in all dentist offices aren't covered by plastic. They wear gloves, stick things in your mouth, and then touch the x-ray machine. How much spit is on that thing? Think about it... Ample parking outside in the same lot shared by Bucci's, State Farm, and a few other businesses. read more

I am avoiding using loyalty to rate or review Advanta Dental. If I could, would give 3.75 stars. I'm rounding up because they've fixed/responded to any issues I've brought up. Just to get it out there, I come from a long line of bad teeth. Not the crooked kind, but the kind that is just destine to get cavities and break. Yes, I brush my teeth. A lot. I floss. Sodas, daily coffee, tons of candy, all no's. I'm in great health, but with a vulnerable grill. So, I've been to Advanta over two dozen times over the past 3 years. The good: They have the most advanced equipment a dentist office can have including software that keep track of all the xrays and photos of your teeth. That one is fun to look at. They also have software to do appnt confirmation via email or texts. Anna, the front desk woman, is fantastic. She has no problems double checking insurance claims, is friendly and knowledgeable and makes you feel welcome. They always have enough assistance staff when you're getting work done so that even when getting cleaning, you have enough people to help or check in on you. The are all really sweet as well. The staff are all professional at all times. The office is right by my office. =) The not-so-good: They are across the bay from my house. The dentists rotate days. Some are in Mon/Tue, some are in Fri only, etc, so that if you want to see the same dentist multiple times, you must come on the same days. They cost more than the competition and do offer the more pricey (latest trends) in solutions. You have to be persistent in turning down extra services. I am an avid asker of questions. I am more curious than a 3 year old. I want more information from them about why, where, and how things are done. I ask and often feel like I'm getting an answer for a 3 year old. I just want to be a educated consumer of their services. Maybe this is a common issue with Doctors/Dentists, but if I'm going to pay for all of this work, I want to know why. The bad then good: I had a bad cap put on. Sensitive for a year, painful to use for a year. I went in multiple times plus called multiple times. Finally I went in and said I wanted it fixed. They replaced it. Now its all good. Bad cap = negative. Fixed cap = positive. But aren't caps pretty damn common? Now I have some new caps and 3 weeks later, they're still very sensitive to use. Please don't make me go back in for these!! Overall I like this place. And it's hard to rate dentists because its a service so seldom used and never for a pleasurable reason. But I think I'm going to try somewhere else for the next cleaning. See what exists out there in the world outside of Advanta. Maybe I'll go back. I like them, but then maybe I'll see that I don't need all the tech for good service. read more

I was in for a routine cleaning appointment - x-ray, examination, cleaning. The x-ray was not neccessary to have every cleaning visits. Advanta Dental Group will do unneccessary proceedures as long as the insurance willing pay. The examination by Dr. Lee was below average. I was a dental assistant for many years and know actually what is involved for dental examination. What Dr. Lee did is not a dental examination. The assistant that did the polish was rushed and want to give flouride treatment which I declined. She informed me that insurance company pay for flouride treatment so I should have it. Again, I declined. When I got the statement from my dental insurance, to my surprise Advanta Dental Group charged me for the Flouride treatment that I did not get. I contacted the office and request the charge to be reversed with my insurance. It's been 4 months since my request, no reversal of the charge. Just a warning for current patients and future patients of Advanta Dental Group in Emeryville; 1. It would be in your best in review your insurance statement of the charges; 2. Know what procedures are neccessary for your treatment; 3. Don't be pressure by Advanta Dental Group for treatments - Get a second option. If you try to resolve any issues with Advanta Dental Group and unable to resolve it, you can contact your insurance company to file a grivenance; file a coplaint with BBB; and file complaint with Dental Board of California. Dentist: When was the last time you've been to the dentist? Me: About two and a half years ago Dentist: How often do you floss? Me: About once every two and a half years. Well at least I flossed that morning! I only had one minor cavity which I think is pretty good for neglecting my dentists appointments for about thirty months! My overall my impression was that it was a nice clean office with good dentists and friendly hygenists. Now I can't really give a full review here--I couldn't get a cleaning because the construction workers across the street had burst a pipe--therefore no water at the office. I will get my cavity filled on the next visit also, so stay tuned! I hope I'll be able to give the place 5 stars! UPDATE 12/4: They just filled my cavity and it was painless and awesome. Very professional and extremely helpful. As a recent transplant to California I had just recently started a new job and I was unfamiliar with my new dental insurance. They were extremely helpful in explaining my options! I unfortunately needed a referral to an endodontist for further work and they scheduled the appointment and made all the arrangements with my insurance company as well! Everyone from the dentist herself to the receptionist were incredibly personable and eager to help (even with the little things like working around my unique work schedule!). I would definitely recommend this to anyone! I was nervous about finding a new dentist in the Bay Area, but I think I found one on my first try! The building itself is nicely decorated and has a professional feel to it. Even though I am positively TERRIFIED of the dentist, I felt calm and at ease and I have almost no anxiety about my future appointments! read more

I haven't been to a dentist in a long, long time, but I can assure you that this visit was certainly one of the best. I made an appointment with Advanta to have a teeth cleaning and was quickly scheduled by their super friendly receptionist. They even called me a few days before to remind me of the appointment which was nice. The morning of my scheduled cleaning they even found a way to have me come in earlier than requested, which was great seeing as how I didn't want to be sitting around waiting for a dental appointment. Get it done early, I say, and get on with the day. Their office is conveniently located with reserved parking right by their front door, and their office is immaculately cleaned with curving architecture and a really fun interior design. The room I had was small, but very well lit with a giant window that looked out at the trees and a flat screen television that I could watch while I waited. Everything was clean, well organized, and seemed especially prepared for my visit. The dental assistant (a really sweet lady who had been working there for years) took my X-Rays and dental photographs quickly and accurately. When I asked how my x-rays looked, she laughed and said, "Well, you have a lot of them!" I felt comfortable, relaxed, and in good care. I saw Dr. Naser, who came into the room with a smile and greeted me with my first name and a handshake. He was very gentle, told me my teeth were in very good condition, and recommended a deep cleaning at another time. For this appointment he cleaned my teeth with his assistant's help. I was in the chair for only 15 minutes, but when Dr. Naser was finished I felt like he had given my teeth the attention they deserved. He was meticulous, careful not to cause any pain, and very thorough. I'll definitely be making Advanta my dental office in the future and would Dr. Naser to anybody. read more

OK so confession time, I had not been to the dentist in about 8 years up to last year. I went in for a checkup at a place in SF but never went back it was just too inconvenient. So when I started working in Emeryville I saw good reviews here for Advanta and made an appointment. What a pleasant surprise to walk into a dental office that is thoroughly modern, sparkling clean, professional and friendly. Dr. Razavi is absolutely wonderful to work with and she talks to you like an adult. I needed a 2 hr deep cleaning and I didn't feel a thing except a sore jaw from having my mouth open wide for so long. Im going in for a polish today and looking forward to it, they are hands down the best. read more
