Let me premise this by saying I'm late-diagnosed autistic with sensory sensitivity to light/sound and hella dental anxiety. I avoided the dentist for 3 years after my last exam, despite having several cavities! Discrimination and general disrespect towards autistic people is commonplace in the medical field. please do look into it because chances are 1 or more of your loved ones are autistic (& that's cool!) Anywho, this is for my fellow sensitive babies. In my experience, Dr. Harper is the dentist to see! He was kind, respectful, and funny- keeping it light. He provided accommodations I didn't think to ask for and kept me informed of what was happening through every filling (there were 7, lol.) He checked in on my pain levels (0-1) and encouraged me to ask questions. Little things like this make a WORLD of a difference to autistic adults. I'll go on because I'm so thankful to have a dentistry I trust my teeth and heart with! The person at the front desk, the gentle dental hygienist, the office manager who stepped in on a busy day-- everyone blew my expectations out of the water. Geeked that such a lovely spot is available to low-income people in Portland. Also pleased I can use the right side of my mouth yet again. This places already has a lot of 1 star reviews...here's another one! When scheduling with medicaid you have to book far out, I haven't seen a location make you book out as far as this one. My partner booked an appointment about 6 months prior and day of the appointment because of lack of accsesible transportation arrived 13 minutes late. Now I work in healthcare, yes over 10 minutes is pushing it but they attempted to call beforehand and they arrived before the 15 minute cut off (which I feel like is the general rule) Upon arrival the front desk worker was incredibly dismissive and showed no empathy. It seemed as though they had some sort of a power trip by saying "you are 16 minutes late" after they had been talking for 3 minutes. Additionally, she said you can just wait here to see if the next appt slot showed up. So instead of seeing for a shorter visit or at least allowing any interaction with the dentist, she just told my partner you must sit there and wait for 45 minutes. Once the 4pm visit showed up she made my partner wait another 15 minutes and said no one can see them. This was April, she then said she could not schedule them until August. And this is medicaid!! It is not like we have a choice of providers, we are assigned this dental group so to be dismissed and disregaurded really sucked. And reading the reviews shows this is not out of character! This office is not delivering compassionate and informed care, they really do not seem to give a crap. Having this person at the front desk either means they do know and just don't care or they do not know how bad it is and are not holding employees accountable. Horrible company, horrible front end staff. They have cancelled appoints the day before the appoinment SIX times on me. THey scheduled my cleanings 8 months apart then cancelled the second one over text message. They gave me a filling which caused tremendous pain for 3 weeks, then coulnt even tell me from their records which tooth they had filled. They then cancelled the appointment I had to get it fixed. Stay away from this business, they are butchers and honestly im surprised they havent been reported to the state for cancelling OHP funded appointments. Our dentist is on paternity leave and my husband needed 2 teeth pulled that were not salvagable, so they sent us to the Broadway Advantage dental. My husband goes in and Dr. Polan was rude right from the start. He insisted that my husband needed 4 teeth pulled instead of the 2 that my husband's dentist said he needed pulled. My husband told him no only the 2 teeth and Dr. Poland said "I have looked at your mouth for 2 minutes.. so how do I know more about your teeth than you". My husband then asked him why he had to be rude about it and he just looked at him and said nothing. Then he was pulling the teeth, didnt even let the numbing kick in and was yanking on it hard and being really rough. My husband has had teeth pulled before and it is not supposed to be that way. He then asked again, "Are you sure you dont want to pull the other 2 teeth?" And my husband said no because his normal dentist said just those 2. He seemed to get more irritated at my husband. Then towards the end he was jabing his gums instead of gentle cleaning it out before the stitches. We will never go back to Dr. Poland. He is unprofessional and it feels like he treats people on OHP differently than other people. Very rude. If you have children, I would not take them here if you have OHP in my opinion. This is my fourth or fifth visit here, for regular cleanings. Also went through a deep cleaning on my first couple of visits. Today I had a new hygienist, Nejene, and she was very wonderful to work with... Take it from the south scaredy-cat over here :-) When the dentist came in, he was very nice, and made me further aware of my necessary upkeep. Both my hygienist and dentist were great to work with today, and when I left I had a strong sense of what I've been doing well, and what needs more regular attention. They shared their concerns and never made me feel guilty once about not having perfect teeth.. this is the kind of place that brought me back to regular dentistry after years of fear and not scheduling appointments. The only good thing about this clinic is the new front desk woman, Alexis. She helped schedule an appointment the day after I called and was very kind and communicative. Dr. Harper is not as helpful. He is fast talking and invasive. The first time I saw him he wanted to to extract my wisdom teeth that day. Typically one sees an oral surgeon that has years of experience doing wisdom extractions to get those out. Not only did that make me feel uncomfortable and wary already but when I said that I didn't want him to start work on my other teeth (because I was now pretty uncomfortable) he told me that noone ever says that they don't want work done immediately. His invasiveness was off-putting, his fast-talking felt very impersonal and I think that he was offended when I found a new clinic after this first visit. I say this because after I went to another dentist that recommended that I get my wisdom teeth extracted BY AN ORAL SURGERY PROFESSIONAL, Dr. Harper made it an absolute runaround to get an advantage dental referral. I spent an hour between classes trying to coordinate with Dr. Harpers office and an oral surgery clinic to get my wisdom extraction scheduled. But Dr. Harper for some reason disbelieved that I'd had issues with my wisdom teeth and went "behind my back" to call the oral surgery clinic basically saying "he doesn't need them removed." He also sent an invoice to my advantage dental records saying that he was going to decline my referral for extraction without even seeing me. THE DUDE LITERALLY READ THE INVOICE TO ME WHILE I WAS IN THE DENTAL CHAIR WHEN I CAME IN FOR A REFERRAL. Like, "yo I basically already sent this to them when I heard you calling around yesterday and even though I knew this scheduled appointment was a waste of time because I already denied you, I didn't mention any of this to YOU and let you waste your time so that I could tell you I denied you to your face." I'm a full-time student in University so the time wasted was a total upset. But more than that, I feel like this dude just assumes things about his patients and does not offer any guidance for navigating the health care system. This stuff is hard as it is, and the fact that I'm on poverty level health care doesn't seem to register on Harper's empathy radar at all. He literally just has a complex about me seeking different care after having initially met with him. I just don't trust this dude. If you can, find care elsewhere. So you know when you have an appointment? Like there is a time and place you need to be? Imagine being on a graveyard schedule so your normal sleep time is between roughly 9am to 4 or 5 pm and having to make an appointment that is during those hours. Add to that you are a trans woman who requires three hours of work with makeup and tweezers to look close enough to femme that you don't get constantly insulted and attacked by cis supremecists (which for those who don't know comprise about 80% of the cis population). If you can imagine all that I'm sure you can understand what a major undertaking it was for me to make it to the appointment I made at this particular Advantage Dental today. Following the threats and misgenderings of the train ride to Hollywood Station I made the trudge to the office only to be told "We have no appointment in out system for you. Oh wait you must be Michael!" No, I am Emily. Well it turns out they called me and left me a message that they had arbitrarily changed the day and time of my appointment several days ago. They never bothered to make sure to actually talk to me. Does anyone under 80 bother with voice messages or even voice calls anymore? I legit cannot remember having answered a voice call to find anything but a robocall scam. In any case, yeah offer a changed appointment time in a voice measage but to just change the time with no actual communication? It is absurd, like a country that prides itself on freedom while simultaneously stripping all liverty from people for smoking canabis. So I guess this dental office fits right in with this dytopian nightmare of capitalist proportions we call America. I hate to give this office a one star because their dentist is great. He's personable and knows what he's talking about. But the ONE hygienist in this office is absolutely terrible. She rushes through cleanings and talks to you like an absolute imbecile. The fluoride varnish she put on my teeth is clumpy and only on the front side of my teeth. Not only that but she rushed so much and did such a terrible job that I have it all over my lips and chin. Terrible. So first off I want to say that Dr. Harper is very sweet as a person and was very honest about the amount of work I need done in order to get braces. I appreciate that a lot. However... this entire clinic makes horrible excuses for the way the OTHER male dentist treats patients. NO! It is NOT okay for him to call me a liar when I told him I had already seen an orthodontist! (He didnt know how to pull my history up on the computer). NO! It is not okay for him to communicate rudely to patients! NO! It is not okay for him to purposely not practice trauma informed /human centered care. You dont control patients. You encourage them and talk to them and educate them. The hygienist and the front desk staff, and even Dr. Harper made excuses for this rude man child of a dentist. It is enabling his rude seemingly narccistic behavior toward clients, and quite frankly as someone who has experience working in the mental healthcare field, I find this pretty awful. It will futher traumatize patient's who may already have dental anxiety and make them too scared to get treatment. Nobody should allow someone who works around other human beings to behave in such a way , let alone make excuses. ‍I dont care if you have 50 patients that day and you hate your job. Leave the field then. Dont take it out on other people. I called around and did find another private dental office to do the work for me as suggested by Harper, and even they had heard of this office! This review is mainly for the male dentist that works there. The receptionists were nice, and the lady who did my cleaning was kind. When the dentist came in at the end, he literally did not even look at me. He didn't look at me, but he came at my face with not even an ounce of gentleness or caring. I had the strong feeling that I was not real to him. It was a spooky feeling, especially since this was the dude that would be giving me two filings in a few weeks. I decided to try and come back to actually get the fillings done, and (after waiting for 30 minutes) the lady who was preparing all the instruments wouldn't look at me or speak to me. Terrible pop music was blaring through the speakers and I was facing the window. I felt completely powerless and afraid, and got up to left, thinking to myself, I should probably trust my gut about this place and this dentist. It's a strange thing, to go into this totally new place, with these people you have never met, and you basically are at their mercy. They stick random instruments in your mouth and have the potential to mess up your precious teeth, and it doesn't seem like they even care. So yeah, I ran. What in the actual F is wrong with this place? I'm starting to wonder if this is an actual business. I haven't even had an appointment here yet and I'm getting a horrible first impression. This is the only dentist I can choose from because I am on OHP. I scheduled an appointment for a general checkup/cleaning 3 MONTHS in advance (since they are so booked) and when I showed up for my appointment the receptionist told me they had no record of an appointment for me. I had no choice but to schedule another one, another 3 months out. Now I have a tooth that hurts so bad I can't even chew on that side of my mouth. Every time I try to call them they don't pick up! My third time here and they moved their office into a much nicer and larger space on the other side of the building. I had a crown done about a year ago by a Dr. who is no longer there and it never felt quite right (hard to explain) and then came off recently. Thankfully, Dr. Harper did an extremely good job re-cementing it and now it is better than ever! To the point that I feel grateful that it did come off so that I had the opportunity to have it fixed by him. He was thorough and obsessively precise with the procedure, highly recommended. Three visits to Dental Care Today (A+) and I'm free of dental worries for awhile. First off I had one clinic I could go with my low income insurance (through OHP), and Dental Care Today (35th/Broadway) so I just had to take what I could get. A+ all around! Well their business cards are horrible but any money they save in perks probably keeps costs down. Lol. (I'm a printer, so I can make this joke) Sometimes it comes down to who you get. Both of my assistants were awesome. Dr. Patel my dentist superb and does excellent work! And my dental hygienist Robin was great too. robin had 40 years of work in the field, though her real passion is Chinese herbs and art! The layout is open room with little rooms but very comfortable. I couldn't hear anything else going on. And no waiting around. All three of my appointments started right away (2 were 4 in the afternoon) and I never waited for the dentist. Dr. Patel even smoothed out one of my rough fillings from before. Finding a good affordable dentist is so hard. Green Apple and Willamette Dental both were not good experiences in my past. OHSU very good but time consuming. Also what I like about the low income dental clinic is they weren't trying to make me sign up for more expensive work I don't need this second. So as far as they and I'm concerned, no more dental procedures are needed at this time. What a relief! They take walk-ins and may be the most affordable dental in town. "Eek! Methinks not." Is the perfect statement to describe this place. I was finishing up my coverage on OHP and this was one of the only dental offices to choose from. Of course the ones with 4-5 stars didn't accept OHP. I saw less than ideal reviews all over google and yelp, but decided to give it a chance anyways. I may have caught them on a bad day, but other reviews lead me to believe otherwise. I was overdue for a teeth cleaning and wanted to get my teeth whitened as a treat to myself. So I called and scheduled a new patient appointment along with teeth cleaning and teeth whitening. I asked on the phone how long they need for the teeth whitening, and they said it only takes a couple hours all together. I'm thinking ok, that's not bad at all! I showed up as one of the first appointments in the AM and the front desk gal was super nice. I got taken to the back and into the room for my appointment and everything seemed to be great. The dental hygienist gets some information from me and doesn't ask me, but tells me that a student will be doing the x rays. Doesn't give me an option so I say Ok! Sounds great. Everyone needs to learn. This student was super nice, but kept jamming the metal into my gums and they kept laughing about it saying "you have deep roots" trying to make jokes and excuses for hurting my mouth and gums. (Mind you, I've never had an issue at any dentist before and I used to go religiously). After 30 + minutes of them stabbing me in the gums (my mouth was getting extremely sore) and repeating x rays I started getting a little bit irritated. So I asked if the dental hygienist would just do it so she does. In the process of all of this, her cat ear head band falls off (it was Halloween) and she proceeds to pick them up off of the ground, fiddle with it on her head touching her hair, and then try to put her hands back in my mouth. No switching of gloves. Pretty sure that's a huge health violation. I was immediately disgusted and rubbed the wrong way, but anyways. I was probably in the chair for 45 minutes until the dentist finally came in and told me that since they took so long screwing with my x rays, I would have to schedule another appt for cleaning. Perfect. This wouldn't be an issue if I got more than 1 day off a month. THEN, she comes in with whitening gel in tubes and sends me on my way. Uh what? I was super confused because I had been asking the dental hygienist earlier if the teeth whitening process hurt and how long it takes, and she said they do it really quickly leading me to believe that it was in office. This was the part that I can admit may be my fault as well because I have never had my teeth professional whitened so I might have not asked the correct questions. I didn't need or want the gel, so I asked for a refund. The 1 star is because they issued me a refund like they said they would. I would give -1 star if they hadn't. I made the appointment for x rays, teeth cleaning, and teeth whitening and left with a sore mouth from a student doing x rays on my mouth, no teeth cleaning, and no teeth whitening. Overall a horrible experience. It takes a lot for me to get agitated and I was almost yelling in the lobby I was so pissed off with how this was handled and I can see why they have so many horrible reviews. Dental Care Today is a dental clinic that almost exclusively serves people with OHP. So it's a low-cost clinic but the only way you might be able to tell is the utilitarian decor of the waiting room, the rest of the experience is just like that of another office. I have had two appointments at Dental Care Today, an initial exam that included x-rays and a consultation with the dentist, and a routine cleaning with just the hygienist. Both appointments started exactly on time and the hygienist and x-ray techs were professional and gentle. The place is clean, and the service was as good of quality as I have received at clinics when I had personal insurance. I can't say I noticed the ceiling tile that the other disgruntled reviewer mentioned. When you make an appointment you have to wait a couple months. And the initial appointment does not include a cleaning; you have to schedule that AFTER you have had the initial exam. A little annoying. But overall a good place, fairly centrally located, with competent, compassionate staff. I'll be back. read more

I paid in full at the time of service but here I am now with a ding on my credit report for a bad charge of an additional $117! Also, just to be clear, this place is GROSS. I called Advantage Dental at 8:30am to let them know my son woke up and was in pain and the left side of his face was swollen. They were able to get us in at 9:00am! All the staff were very friendly as usual and Dr. Harper was kind, informative and competent. He diagnosed the issue, cleaned out the infected area, wrote us a prescription for an antibiotic and is referring us to an Oral surgeon. I have had some issues due to having partials and my remaining teeth are so important to me and he gets that. His chairside manner is gentle and very nice. They need to take a class on communication. I had a bad experience the both times I was there. They need to listen to their patients more. I've had no teeth for 2 months now. and they want to do a procedure that I know nothing about. I asked and still no explanation. I told them that I need antibiotic, oxy and no NSAIDS, so what do they give me, I told the hygienist what I get. I was basically told to let them handle everything, and still no explanation on my treatment. I am very proactive, my body, my health. I make the decisions. I filed a complaint with Care Oregon. For some reason no matter how many times I explained which tooth I was having a problem with, they could not get top and bottom, left and right straight. This was very concerning to me. Fortunately, as of this month I am on university health care so I no longer qualify for OHP, so I'm trying to get my dental records, including X-rays, transferred to the university dentist. Someone at Dental Care Today apparently thought that mailing a paper photocopy of my X-rays was an appropriate response, so my new dentist asked me to call them to straighten things out. Today, I had the unexpected experience of Dental Care Today questioning whether I *really* have a right to my own dental records, since OHP paid for them. I end up having to call to make a replacement appointment. When I do get in, there is always sone excuse for why I can get the services I scheduled my appointment for. UGHHHH! First of all, let me start by saying I actually like going to the dentist. I have no phobia, discomfort, or anxiety regarding my annual (or biannual if insurance covers it) visit. My experience at Dental Care Today on NE Broadway may change that however. The office was DISGUSTING! For any business it was gross, but especially for a medical facility...it was totally icky. It's a tiny space, very cramped front office/waiting area as well as tiny "rooms" (more like cubbies without privacy) in the back. The carpet is stained, the dilapidated ceiling tiles are falling apart, and the decor was just plain old. Maybe aesthetics aren't important to everyone, but my impression of this business tanked after spending just a few minutes there. For the first time during a trip to the dentist, I was nervous upon sitting in 'the chair.' Not because of pain, but germs. EVERYTHING was old and grimy, from the countertops to the xray machine that the tech touched, then touched something and put it in my mouth, then touched it again after having touched that which was in my mouth. EWW. It was not like any other dental office I've been in. Usually, the tools are wrapped in disposable plastic to keep things sterile (or as close to as possible). Not this place. It was not hygienic at all. The staff was okay, maybe a little worn and gruff from dealing with difficult patients, but polite to me. They even fit in a cleaning during my initial new patient exam, which was nice (although I don't understand why xrays and cleanings are separate in the first place). I won't go on anymore about the antiquated and icky interior, I've made my point. I was just so shocked that I felt compelled to write a review. I will be booking my next appointment at one of their other locations, which apparently are nice, clean, and updated. I advise everyone to do the same. read more
