All good at the airport till passport controls. Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport is a busy international hub with two terminals, 1 for TAP Air Portugal and other major carriers. It has one notorious problem and that is the processing time for passport controls into and out of the EU Schengen zone. Travellers without young kids should use the e-passport gates to process & enter into the country so that you can exit out the same way. Otherwise you can be stuck in line just because of insufficient staffing and potentially miss your flight! Keep this delay in mind even if you're transferring to domestic flight after arriving internationally. If you're just entering the airport, plan also for the lengthy queue for security especially during the morning peak. For some reason, security tells you to extract all liquids into one small bag although we saw later that many passengers didn't bother. Furthermore, our luggage scan didn't save properly in their system and we had to wait in line for a rescan. The airport itself is quite spacious with plenty of amenities including a large food court that features many local restaurants and fast food options, as well as souvenir, sports and clothing shops. Within the EU Schengen area, there is also a busy central seating area with escalators that lead up to several premium lounges along with a row of hidden recliner seats away from the bustle. The plastic seating at the gates show signs of stain from many passengers sleeping across these seats with their shoes on. While there are gates directly to some planes, all of our flights required taking a bus sometimes with a long wait to get to our planes, adding to the wait-time. One positive while you're waiting at the airport is their wifi which streams quite fast. The airport is conveniently serviced by the Lisbon Metro red line about 40 minutes from city centre. Ask Me Lisboa kiosk is located at the entrance where you can pickup the Lisboa Card to cover transit and sightseeing up to 3 days. Skip it or hit it? Lisbon Airport can be pleasant if you get there 3-4 hours ahead of time to make it through security and passport controls.

Experiencing Lisbon as a primarily English speaker is one of the best non-primary English speaking countries I have visited. The people are warm, welcoming, and go out of their way to speak English when they recognize a visitor is struggling. Cascais, Sintra, Belem, or Lisbon itself all delivered this experience during my stay. All of that went out the window when I arrived at the airport to depart. Limited or non-existent signage (even in Portuguese) remotely attempting to inform travelers what direction to walk created chokepoints at every stage. The staff working the airport seemed like a totally different Portuguese citizen than all of the amazing people I interacted with in the cities, restaurants, hotels, and excursions. They gave the impression that they had no interest in helping direct the flow of traffic to make things easier on the travelers, or themselves for that matter. That combined with the poor operational engineering made each required step difficult to navigate, right up to the point of locating the physical departure gate. Part of me understands why their demeanor appeared to be miserable. Proper setup and staging with clearly labeled signage completely removes the need to speak with a human at the majority of major European cities and hubs. As a career operator, a small investment in signage would change the entire experience. That would likely improve the staffs outlook on spending day after day speaking to lines of travelers all asking the same question in a row. In closing, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND you add Lisbon to your list of cities to visit as an English speaker. Especially if you love the ocean, outdoors, history, and topped tier cuisines from all over Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Just prepare yourself to have your overall experience take a dive upon arrival to the airport.

This is the kind of review that will save you from a total meltdown that will ruin your experience in Portugal. First off this airport is notorious for its dated infrastructure, confusing signage, totally illogical layout and mostly unhelpful staff (outside of the airline ground staff). This is well known if you simply look it up anywhere on the internet. The one thing that is really what causes mass chaos on a daily basis is the demented way the terminal is set up where passport control is located AFTER the security/duty free/shopping area in the terminal. When you depart from the main terminal (1) you will check in and show your passport to ground staff and go through a screening where they scan your boarding pass you will pass security. After that you will walk through a long and winding duty free section that opens in to the area where stores and restaurants and lounges are. What many people don't realize is that after all this there is a gigantic line where you have to do the actual passport control process to get to your actual gate. So here's the issue, the line is often overwhelming and can be as long as 1-4 hours long. My personal experience at 10am was a 1.5 hour wait. We barely made it to our gate in time. But many people don't realize this and show up with like 15-30 minutes to go and end up cutting the line, pushing people around and even get into open fights with people. (During our time the police actually arrived to break up one fight). It is absolutely lawless and there is almost nothing being done by the staff to corral anything. There are stories about this that circulate on the internet and it is due to obviously this being an aging airport in the middle of the city with no meaningful way to expand. While there's talk about the new airport being developed, the timeline is still years away so unless they do something drastic to renovate internally (which seems unlikely given the limited space) or to get more of those automated machines working, I don't see this changing anytime soon. Also even though the lines are delineated by EU and all passports all of the lines were pretty long but the all passports line was definitely overwhelming. Point being, you'd better budget a crap ton of time, because you have no idea how long it's going to really take to get to your gate

Very subpar experience here. First, there's no actual gate at least not for TAP. You arrive and deplane via a staircase right onto the runway like you would at a small private airport. Then you board a shuttle bus to arrive at passport control. INSANELY long lines, we are talking hours. There are no bathrooms in sight. So you just got off a 6+ hour flight and now need to wait in line for hours with no bathrooms. If I ever come back to Portugal I'd probably fly into Spain and take the train here because this is ridiculous. I had seen horror stories online and be assured they are true! In Spain we literally walked up to passport control with no line! Additionally, it was impossible to get an uber. I waited over 25 minutes and could not connect with a driver. I got frustrated so just started walking out of the airport. I walked about 20 minutes and then called an Uber to my accommodations. After the walk the Uber was only 4 euros compared to the 15 quoted at the airport. The only positive thing I will say is that this airport has some really nice shops for buying souvenirs and duty free items. They have a nice Longchamp store and beautiful offerings of wine and cheese.

AEROPORTO DE LISBOA - Hubby's birthday trip last month was a blast but this airport was quite the experience . We landed on a Thursday afternoon from calm and organized Frankfurt and when we got here it was hot , over crowded and felt like there was no air conditioning in the building ! We got our duty free goods and trying to find our bolt car was like being in a zoo because there were sooo many people just congregated in the area with no demarcations. Bad signal too. Leaving were on a 5am flight and we got to the airport super early and there were all these closed counters and people sleeping through out the terminal. By the time they opened the security line it was literally a herd of travelers ! Not many options for food and it was quite an adventure arriving and leaving Portugal!!! Just be Ready!!!

The place is a fucking maze! Awful and confusing signage. We were looking for gate 41. There is a sign that says Gates 17-22, and S and N. What happened to the rest of the gates? I look further down the walkway and see "N41-47". There it is! How hard would it be for them to have added N41-47 to the first sign? Also, do they really need such a large duty-free shopping area? It's like Macy's at Christmas! You have to run the gauntlet to get to your flights. read more
So disorganized! Sure, you will manage to find your way, but allow plenty of time. This makes JFK seem like an organized airport. There just isn't any clear signs and there are people everywhere just because of poor terminal planning. I feel like I had to show my boarding pass like 8 times before boarding. Sometimes literally to the same person standing behind different counters. They 'force' you to walk through the duty free shops for 20 minutes just to get to where the gates are, pfff I know what you are trying to do! Also, you go through immigration for a departing flight, everything is just back to front here. read more
Low cost carriers depart from T2, which is basically a repurposed hangar with a McDonalds in it. Not as bad as it sounds, I promise. Trouble is the lack of seating when flights don't leave, causing overcrowding. The Duty Free shop is formidably large - a good way to burn half an hour. If traveling with dignity is of importance to you, then flying with BA or another flagship carrier will leave you at T1, a much better way to go. read more
As airports goes, this one is not that bad. Check-in and security is fast and efficient. The airside area has the usual duty free shops, but also strangely a lot of UK high street brands, i.e. John Lewis(?) and eateries, like MacDonalds and KFC. What is very similar to Spanish airports is that you go through passport control after the departure lounge before going to your departure gates, which could take up to 20 minutes, so when you think you are just going to the departure gates, you then realise that you need to go to through passport control first, whereas most airports you go through passport control first before the departure lounge so when your gate number comes up, you go straight to the departure gates without worry about going through passport control. read more
After Amsterdam, no airport is going to live up to my standards. None the less, it's not bad. of weed had one more hour if into town, which is fairly close, but security etc... Makes it dicey so I'm here for 3 hours. there time of shops that I'll not anything at but will keep me wandering, which is good before am international flight. It's a bit, worn feeling, but there are loads of bathrooms (usually being cleaned it seems). Sadly the baggage storage is our of service. Lose a star bc without carts this makes lay overs a DRAG. Extra props bc very considerate of folks traveling with kids or disabilities. Loaner strollers & wheel chairs and a toddler play ground with airportariffs snacks in vending machines. Nevertheless 3 stars. read more
Mixed reviews. Terminal 1 is for international flights. The airport was squeaky-clean, modern and nice. Upon arrival, passport and immigration clearance took forever, well not really, but maybe an hour. Terminal 2 was for domestic flights, which we experienced by booking EasyJet,a European budget airline. This terminal on the other hand, looked like an old Greyhound bus terminal, packed with people, barely enough seats, and sputtering air conditioning. read more

Pros: clean, well lit, ample services. Also, I was traveling alone with my 3 children, and they always pulled me out if lines and put me in front. Very courteous. Cons: very confusing. No, I mean EXTREMELY confusing layout. read more

Very nice Airport clean restrooms. Good collections of Shopping stores and cafes. But unorganized in connecting flights. Dont book an hour and a half layover. They said they have no control... but we asked if they can get the late arrivals to get to their connecting flights. We had to get through the looooong line to get passport s stamped.WILL NOT USE THIS unless Im visiting Portugal. read more

Flew out on a Swiss flight, and was very confused on how to check in at the airport. The screens mentioned "kiosk" and bag drop at desk 60-80 (TAP Portugal, part of the Star Alliance). I went to several different kiosks, none had Swiss (but some had different variations of airlines offered by one or two, which was strange). Asked an associate at the TAP Portugal line and she directed me to their desk, where they printed my boarding pass and would have checked my bag if I wanted to. Security was easy with the "Green Way" fast track (all the way against the right wall when queuing for security). The airport is currently undergoing construction and the ventilation doesn't clear the overwhelming smell of perfume very well (from the duty free shop). Only way to get into Lisbon, so no other choice. Could be nicer - looking forward to what it looks like after the renovation. read more

Lisbon's airport with 2 terminals. Terminal 1 - nice, sophisticated place, well organized. Terminal 2 - (i use it mostly) it's like on a desert. It's not far but if you need to wait for the plane like 2h you'll die of being bored, hunger, and cold. Forget about shopping on 2nd terminal. There's McDonalds, Parfois, Tax Free shop and Ale-Hop. If your flight it's late, better bring sandwiches. Terminal 1 comparing to number 2 is like a dream. Plenty of shops, places to sit, places to chill, clean toilets, smoking zone. read more

I like this airport. It's no more than a 30 minute bus ride, costing less than 4 euros, to or from the centre of town. Small, pretty relaxed and well run, I find it a nice change from having to deal with the madness at Gatwick or Heathrow in London. Once you have got through security there are plenty of places to shop, eat, drink or chill. For food I would recommend Oregano which has some decent healthy but tasty hot and cold food or Cockpit Drinks & Tapas where it is quite nice to end your stay with a cold beer and a snack sitting at the bar. read more

One of the worst airports I have ever seen. There are very long disorganized lines everywhere. The only positive is there are nice stores to look at while you wait for your flight Also if you decide to take a taxi from the airport demand a receipt at the end of ride before you pay. They are known is rip off tourists. Be careful! If you feel you have been ripped off you can bring the receipt to the police so the person can be reprimanded. read more

It's clean, simple and uncomplicated. My only concern was there isn't a info booth/corner that's easy to find.

Custom is very fast. So is the checked in luggage. The airport is a bit on the smaller side but it's got everything you need.

Poor Airport, long cues, crunch staff, no wi-fi, high prices. Flights delayed on a regular basis.

The entrance of the airport is totally chaotic with large tour groups waiting for their guides. Once you pierce through that blob, security is fairly efficient. Tax free refund process is an example of industrial dis-engineering: get a stamp from a booth and then cross the street to see an agent at another booth. There is one premium lounge for all airlines called Ana Lounge, which is inevitably crowded. The airport makes up for all of its infrastructural shortcomings with friendly staff. read more
This review is mainly for the security process at Lisbon. I was randomly selected to go through extra security so this could've been a nightmare, but it was very efficient. I went through the first security checkpoint with no problem. Next, I exited the EU via a fancy electronic passport system with no holdups. Finally at the actual gate I had to get some extra security, but there were already two security agents at the gate processing everyone who was marked for extra screening. I made my flight with no problem! read more

I have read lots of great reviews on the shopping and food at Lisbon Airport. They are correct, but my experience with passport control TWICE has been a nightmare. They never seem to have more than three or four agents and the Disneyland like line takes forever. Be prepared to stand at least an hour. I have been there at 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Both had lines out the door of passengers. Go early...I did and still barely made my flight. read more

This airport might be a breeze for EU travelers, but coming and going from outside the EU is a different story. The airport is clean, bright, and airy, but navigating through it is not intuitive and can be very time-consuming. On arrival, it took forever to go through customs/border patrol (our flight arrived at the same time as a flight from Brazil), and then it took forever to find transportation to leave the airport. At first I tried to take the Metro, but some of the ticket/card machines were broken and there was a very long, barely moving line to purchase cards. It does no good to have a metro station at the airport if tourists cannot get on it! I gave up and went outside to try an airport bus to take me downtown. They were supposed to come every 20 mins, but in the morning rush hour it took 45 mins for my correct bus to arrive. When the first bus came, the destination was somewhere completely different than what was on the posted sign and schedule, so I had to wait for the next one. I wanted to bail and get a taxi but I had already paid for the bus ticket. This was a stressful experience when running on no sleep. I implore the Lisboa tourist board and airport to improve this process for weary travelers. When departing at the end of my stay, it took a lot longer than expected to get to the gate. At first I thought I was early, so I took my time to enjoy another Portuguese coffee and breakfast pastry at the outdoor cafe before going inside. Check in was confusing - the self-check in machines did not work for me, but I got an airline employee to help me. I passed through the first security screening quickly, without any problems, and still thought I was ahead of schedule. So I got a sandwich and then went to the duty free shop to use up my Euro. The line to check out at duty free took (you guessed it) forever. It would be great if the shop could add an express line so lonely single women who just want to buy 1 bottle of Alentejo wine don't have to wait behind 3 couples each buying 20 boxes of perfume, 5 bottles of Johnny Walker, and 10 Toblerone bars. Just an idea... After finally purchasing my coveted bottle of wine, I encountered a Customer/Border Patrol departure screening with a long line and was informed by an employee that I was running late for my flight and I better hurry. Commence frantic running through the airport montage. My gate was a weird number like 27A, it was all the way at the end of the concourse, and I COULD NOT FIND IT. They literally hid this gate in an armpit next to the regular gate 27. I apologize to the poor passengers going to Manchester who I had a Hollywood meltdown in front of because I couldn't find my gate and thought I was going to miss my flight. I believe at one point I cried "this airport is killing me!!!" I did not miss my flight, but it a very stressful experience. When I landed in Philly a text from American Airlines came through on my phone saying my Lisbon to Philly flight departure time had been moved up. Well, no wonder I had been so late, but what the hell?! No one from the airline at check-in told me that the flight time got moved up and the time was never changed on the board. A whole lot of good that text did me when I could not receive it when I needed it. And, airlines, please stop moving flight times up. It's just rude. In sum, plan a lot of time for this airport experience and get a local data plan. I did not have one on this trip, but I will get one the next time I'm in Europe because I could not rely on wifi outside of my accommodations, and without cellular data I was at a huge disadvantage regarding navigation and important notifications. read more

Absolute worst airport that you could possibly get stuck in. The delays here double the frustration of The Chicago airport. I've been here 3 times and each time my flight has been delayed. Passport check system is also not set up correctly for connecting flights; you could be waiting in line for more than 2 hours while trying to connect a flight which is also in the EU; I missed a flight because of it. AT ALL COSTS AVOID FLIGHTS TO/CONNECTING TO LISBON AIRPORT. read more

I would like to complain about this specific lady with glasses who was taking care of Gate 902A for Ryanair Flight FR7137 from Lisbon to Dublin (20:46-23:15) on 24th August* 2019. She understood clearly that the flight was going to Dublin, yet she assumed blindly that I was going to United Kingdom while I was going to Dublin, Ireland. She kept asking me for United Kingdom visa and stamp while I was going to Ireland. I requested that I could show her my Irish stamp but she refused in a very rude and stubborn way and made a call for her supervisor. During the call, she mentioned "Malaysia" because I'm a Malaysian. I showed her my Irish permit but she did not approve me going on to the plane because I have only Irish permit and stamps as well as a Malaysian passport. Even after the supervisor solved my problem, she started doubting her supervisor asking "Malasia?" in a suspicious tone. In addition, I would like to clarify that it's legally visa free up to 3 months in Ireland and up to 6 months in United Kingdom for those Malaysian passport holders. However, I even have the Irish permit proving that I stay there, but she did not believe at all. She was racist, lack of profession as well as lack of knowledge about geography, country and basic passport knowledge. Here what I think seems reasonable that please don't work at the international section, you're not open and fair minded enough to accept people from different country visiting around. Please don't work at the international section too, if you know nothing about passport power. read more

This is the worst airport in the world. Sure there is good shopping but when it comes to service they are awful. I left my bag on the plane and every single person I talked to pawned me off on someone else. Extremely rude staff at the TAP counter where I got a replacement flight since I missed mine dealing with bureaucracy. I never was able to get my bag back, I believe it was stolen and they are covering. I had to fly back out from this airport with my fiance who is Brazilian and was hoping since he speaks Portuguese I'd get better service, but they were even worse to him. An attendant swooped down on me when I ducked under a cordon where the line was short, she grabbed my passport and my ticket and started yelling I was in the wrong line. My fiance explained to her, in Portuguese, that I was in the correct line, and she called over security to scare him. Completely unnecessary and I believe racially motivated. Then the same attendant checked me in to my flight and literally said "Hello again" in a super derisive way, and flagged me for extra security. I hope these people rot in hell. read more

The Lisbon airport could be why more travelers don't visit Portugal! I have flown all over the world and other than true third world countries this could be the worst. ALSO - a warning about taxi scams. We stayed in the central city away from the airport and paid a taxi fare of 10 Euros or so. I marveled that taxis could be so reasonable. Our schedule had us overnighting in Portugal on the way back so we stayed at the Radisson near the airport on the way back. The driver was pleasant but turned the meter off before we arrived so we couldn't see it and then told us that the fare was 15 Euros - sounded expensive but we paid. The next morning we took another taxi back to the airport - and got charged 23 Euros from a driver who never turned the meter on and then left us down at the arrivals level without a word of explanation. So once we navigated back to departures and the correct terminal (with a bit of guidance reluctantly given by surly information personnel) we managed to find our check in area. We cleared the first security before check in and then were told that it would be about a mile walk to our gate. We flew Business Class so were pleased to get Fast Track access to security -- until we got there and spent about 30 minutes in a long winding line of at least 200 people - if that's fast track I can't imagine what slow track is like. We thought maybe we went the wrong way - but there was no other option. The walk to the gate is indeed a long one, with no walkways until you get through the hideous shopping mall, blaring with music and no real place to sit - gates not well marked - and then around to yet another passport control line, and finally the last half mile or so to the gates -- where we endured yet another round of security questions before we could line up to get on the plane. There were a few seats in the gate area, but nothing really inviting. If you absolutely can't avoid it, allow several hours to negotiate your way around this horrid place! And be ready to get NO help or directions from anyone. Oh, and by the way, I can speak and understand some Portuguese, so it was not a case of insisting on English! read more

I would give it an zerO if I could. The custom (Vat Refund) is a nightmare. We arrived 3 hours ahead of our flight... checked in.. got out luggage stickers.... lined up...but we still ended up leaving the queue. There were a few staffs but there was only one staff actually at the counter working on the claims. It took that one staff more than 15 mins to finish one claim... other staff were just eyeballing at the queue. Occasionally the line move... it's because people just gave up. The two star review applies to terminal 2. As memory serves terminal 1 was quite nice if not very disorganised. In terminal two there are huge queues for security, insufficient seating, a tiny duty free shop and your food choices are limited to McDonalds and some other fast food place. I have to admit this place was pretty forgettable and I found some awesome ibuprofen in the drugstore with the help of a tall, dark Portuguese pharmacist...So that means in airport-speak, it was a good experience, no issues, and why it deserves 4 stars! I feel inclined to provide a review because of experiences in other EU airports (Frankfurt, I'm talking to you and even the amazing shopping and morning beer doesn't make up for it)! It took FOREVER to get there from the Algarve coast but once you get here, there's no traffic, signs are easy to follow, and even waiting to drop off a rental car was a breeze. It's smaller compared to other EU airports and since I was on a short hop from Lisboa to Barcelona, I thought I would be stuck in commuter traffic but nope, it went by in a breeze! Passport control took us about 2 hours as it is understaffed. Some lucky travelers were able to move ahead of line as their flights were boarding. We tried to appeal to the staff but were told we would be fine to make our flight. Sure enough, we missed our connecting flight and waited at the understaffed transfers desk. FYI many try to cut in line, so stand your ground. Luckily we were able to get on another flight a few hours later. Others in line were not so lucky. On our return trip, we were unable to check in online. Waited in the same line at the transfers desk - they couldn't print our boarding pass. Now waiting in another line. I get a kick of some people's reviews. The airport is absolutely beautiful. I fly there often and to me gets better every time. When they see my small kids I immediately get put to the front of the line. My elderly mother gets preferential treatment every time. The food is amazing and duty free with great stores. You may I guess find a section if the airport that has not been renovated yet. The country did just go through a massive recession. Tap employees are... Tap just like united will not help you in JetBlue. You are lucky if United helps you with United! In contrast I just landed in the beautiful (sarcastic) urine smelling rotted carpet held together with tape and angry workers too busy to help you while in their cellphone New Jersey airport. You know... akin a third world country. Almost every American airport short of a few like Tampa etc is run down, filthy and with nasty employees yet we review other countries who's system we may not understand as bad and have this better than thou attitude. Don't let these people give you such a bad impression of a great place. I do agree that they do have a bit too many check points and can seem rather redundant and irritating. You will need 3 hours for an international non EU flight. read more

The good, the bad, and the ugly! My family and I made 4 trips either into our out of this airport within the last two weeks. The airport is small-medium in size which should make it easily navigable. There's a good size shopping area for both foods and duty free purchases. Baggage claim after your arrival is easily found and pretty timely. Getting out of the airport is where it gets tricky. Uber picks up on the departure "kiss and ride area" while taxis and buses are outside of baggage claims. There are no signs to tell you where Uber drivers park-we had to learn this the hard way. To access the Metro, you have to go outside of the building and then enter their station-there's no direct hallway. Flying out is where things get ugly. Checking-in kiosks are non-descript and serve multiple airlines. We printed off our Delta boarding passes on Sunday yet we still had to wait in the same line as everyone else to just drop off our luggage which took almost 45 minutes!! From there we hoofed it to the security line that was backed up to the entering hallway and it too took almost 45 minutes to get through. You have to RUN through all the shops to make it to the passport confirmation area. Now to be clear, I had already shown my passport at the airline counter and again through security. There are several different automated kiosk areas to go through depending on your originating country. None of us U.S. citizens could use the automated kiosks because they would not work. When we finally waved someone down, all they said was to go to the "all passports" line... and again...we waited..with all the other U.S. passport holding travelers. The line grew rapidly and we were starting to get frantic. They finally pushed us over to the non-U.S. passport side to get us through, but that still took 20 minutes! We arrived to the airport 2+ hours before our flight and were among the last dozen people to board. The airport is not prepared to deal with the influx of passengers and our Saturday flight from Barcelona was parked out in the back lot with a dozen other planes and everyone bussed to the terminal. This was after we had to circle the terminal several times before landing. Lisbon is a beautiful city. Their airport needs to grow to keep people coming back. read more

Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon is a great airport with excellent facilities. The airport is very clean and well-organized, with clear signs and directions throughout. The cafeteria in the airport is particularly noteworthy, with a wide range of food options available and delicious coffee. The airport also has a good selection of shops and duty-free stores, making it easy to find souvenirs or last-minute essentials before boarding your flight. The staff are friendly and helpful, which adds to the positive experience of traveling through this airport. Overall, I highly recommend Humberto Delgado Airport for anyone traveling to or from Lisbon. read more

It is an OK airport. There's often big delays when they deliver our baggage, but other than that the staff is nice and helpful. There connections to central city are good now with the metro. Also, the wi-fi is limited to 30 minutes, which isn't exactly nice, considering we often need to wait a lot more than that. read more

The police and lost and found workers here are the worst people I've ever come into contact with in my entire life. Truly horrible, rude, disgusting people. Avoid at all costs. Should be ashamed of themselves. read more
