Friend and I came here to try something different. I got a hot matcha with lavender foam and asked for it to be less sweet. Maybe it was because I added to foam, but the chai was overly sweet, not too strong or spicy, and the lavender foam tasted artificial / nothing like lavender. Wow, what a pleasant, surprise find! The Balkan pastries all look amazing, but I chose the spinach & cheese Burek and it was delicious. I enjoyed a traditional latte sweetened with honey. The freshly ground taste was the best around. I took a baklava to-go to enjoy later and it looks so fresh and generously portioned. I will definitely be back to enjoy this gem of a café. My wife and I were running errands on the Martin Luther King Jr holiday, and we decided to take a break and have some lunch. As usual, my wife started looking for a place we haven't been before. Having been in Fredericksburg now for almost 2 1/2 years, the list of such places is getting shorter. We were out Route 3 west of 95, and she found a place called Affogato Europa Cafe. It's a family-run cafe and bakery featuring pastries, sandwiches, coffees, and lots of other sweets. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a very clean, friendly looking place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We looked at the menu and my wife decided to have a Beef and Onion Burek, which is a traditional Balkan flaky pastry filled with, in this case, beef and onions. It was fantastic. Very flavorful and the pastry melted in your mouth. I'm a sucker for anything with the word "breakfast" in it. I had the Balkan Breakfast Panini. This marvelous sandwich contains egg, chorizo, cheese spread, provolone, tomato, and arugula. It was outstanding and the chorizo was very tasty (though a bit hard to bite through). I know I love a sandwich when after I put the last bite in my mouth, I feel a little sad because it is all done. Such was the case here. My wife had a Cortado espresso, which she loved but was a bit strong for me. I had a London Fog, which seemed like a latte with a hint of Earl Gray tea. I loved it, and when my wife tasted it she pronounced it "nummy". She doesn't use that word a lot so when she does I know she loves it. After lunch we split a Lava Cake, which is a small but decadent chocolate cupcake. Whether you are getting coffee or gelato Affogato is the place to go. They have some of the best coffee in the Fredericksburg area. The espresso shots are top notch and really enhance the quality of drinks. They also have a rotating menu of flavors and baked goods so there is something new to look forward to every visit. This may well be my go-to coffee/gelato spot in the area. I don't know if it's because they may put more love in their lattes but a regular latte with oat milk warmed my soul on the rainy day that I stopped by. The staff was so pleasant and friendly and offered suggestions. I also ordered a cheese and spinach burek. Not a disappointment and very doughy but it was still pretty good. I also wanted something sweet before I left, so I saw that you can get any gelato as a milkshake. Hands-down, banana was the best choice I ever made as a gelato milkshake. Most of the staff has been friendly, I've been here 4-5 times but I probably won't be coming back after today. One younger woman was condescending last time when I asked how to pronounce "burek". The women today were very kind and friendly. However, for we spent almost $60 (after tax and tip) on a latte, a drip coffee, a panini, oatmeal, and a burek. The burek lacked any flavor at all. The oatmeal tbh was terrible. It was extremely bland and the bottom of my oatmeal was literally dry, as if they hadn't added and liquid to it. It also just tasted like plain Quaker's oatmeal with ZERO toppings or anything.
