My wife and I were running errands on the Martin Luther King Jr holiday, and we decided to take a break and have some lunch. As usual, my wife started looking for a place we haven't been before. Having been in Fredericksburg now for almost 2 1/2 years, the list of such places is getting shorter. We were out Route 3 west of 95, and she found a place called Affogato Europa Cafe. It's a family-run cafe and bakery featuring pastries, sandwiches, coffees, and lots of other sweets. It was a very clean, friendly looking place. We looked at the menu and my wife decided to have a Beef and Onion Burek, which is a traditional Balkan flaky pastry filled with, in this case, beef and onions. It was fantastic. Very flavorful and the pastry melted in your mouth. I'm a sucker for anything with the word "breakfast" in it. I had the Balkan Breakfast Panini. This marvelous sandwich contains egg, chorizo, cheese spread, provolone, tomato, and arugula. It was outstanding and the chorizo was very tasty (though a bit hard to bite through). I know I love a sandwich when after I put the last bite in my mouth, I feel a little sad because it is all done. Such was the case here. My wife had a Cortado espresso, which she loved but was a bit strong for me. I had a London Fog, which seemed like a latte with a hint of Earl Gray tea. I loved it, and when my wife tasted it she pronounced it "nummy". She doesn't use that word a lot so when she does I know she loves it. After lunch we split a Lava Cake, which is a small but decadent chocolate cupcake. The dining room was small but comfortable. The servers we encountered at the counter were very friendly. Rest room was very clean. It's not really close to us, but when were shopping out on Route 3, we'll certainly try them again. read more

The inside is decorated nice with acoustic music playing. They have been having different drinks on sale for 5 dollars each for Christmas. Today they had the s'mores mocha for 5 dollars. The iced s'mores mocha is very tasty and a great drink to sip on. The cherry pastry was moist and delicious. My daughter enjoyed every bite of it. The staff were friendly and quick with the orders. Whether you are getting coffee or gelato Affogato is the place to go. They have some of the best coffee in the Fredericksburg area. The espresso shots are top notch and really enhance the quality of drinks. They also have a rotating menu of flavors and baked goods so there is something new to look forward to every visit. I usually get my drinks to go, but they have a nice little seating area that is clean and can hold 15 people or so. Service is always polite and I love the uniforms they have for the baristas. Makes it feel like they really care about the experience. Prices are a little higher, but for the quality and service I can't complain. I'd recommend to anyone that enjoys coffee. read more

I really enjoyed my visit to Affogato! This small, family-owned cafe offers a drink menu that includes cold and hot drinks, and smoothies; they also have pastries, such as burke and pastry rolls, paninis, oatmeal with chia, and ice cream. I had one of their seasonal lattes, the maple spice - this came in a large cup, extra hot, just the way I preferred. The latte was prepared well - it was strong, creamy, and you can really taste the flavors of the maple spice. There are only a few tables and some counter seating, as this is a smaller cozy place. I just wished that the tables and the chairs were wiped down after each party, as the table I was at had stains on the chair and crumbs all over the table top. The staff here are very friendly and welcoming, and this is a good spot to play catch up or do some work. The coffee here is great. They used Stumptown coffee bean which is always good. The barista is very skilled. The place is pretty casual and has a lot of pastry that i definitely recommend trying as well. Over all I'd be back when I'm in town next time. read more

I have wanted to try this place for a while finally I did just that. This cafe is amazing they have tons of options for both GF and Vegans. Everything from traditional coffee to smoothies and Ice cream. We had 7 people in total we were able to just sit and relax and have our coffee without interrupting other people. The feel in this cafe is very clean and green :) The cappuccino is very much like a cappuccino you'll get abroad no need to sweeten it! I've been here a few times over the past year and never been disappointed! The cappuccino is the best I've ever had; the paninis, while lacking the typical grill marks one would expect, are fresh and delicious; the pastries are light, flaky and not overly sweet like most U.S. pastries (the spinach and feta burek is *chef's kiss!*); the service is friendly if not always as fast as we tend to demand in the States. Overall, an authentic-feeling European experience! The only things preventing me from being a more regular customer are the prices (high everywhere these days, but even more so here --I feel I'm paying for the exceptional quality!) and the atmosphere (clean and bright, but I prefer a larger, warmer space with some cushy seating where I can relax for a bit and linger over an extra cup of coffee and a good book). This may well be my go-to coffee/gelato spot in the area. I don't know if it's because they may put more love in their lattes but a regular latte with oat milk warmed my soul on the rainy day that I stopped by. The staff was so pleasant and friendly and offered suggestions. I also ordered a cheese and spinach burek. Not a disappointment and very doughy but it was still pretty good. I also wanted something sweet before I left, so I saw that you can get any gelato as a milkshake. Hands-down, banana was the best choice I ever made as a gelato milkshake. I love this place. I don't even really like coffee and I drive 30 minutes out of my way to keep coming here. Their drinks are delicious. Never bitter. They taste so authentic. They have two gluten free treats -- the lava cake and the vanilla munchie cookies. Those are both really good too. I haven't tried the ice cream or smoothies yet, I keep meaning to but the espresso macchiato is just too delicious to pass up. read more

This adorable cafe does make you feel like you are in Europe. Although the seating could be more comfortable, the decor is simple and inviting. The pastries and cookies are all delectable. It is the one place we have found in the area that truly is consistently wonderful when it comes to baked goods. We do wish they would consider making European-style crescents. The wait staff is always polite and helpful. The only downside is the cost. We would go more often, but the prices are high. Most of the staff has been friendly, I've been here 4-5 times but I probably won't be coming back after today. One younger woman was condescending last time when I asked how to pronounce "burek". The women today were very kind and friendly. However, for we spent almost $60 (after tax and tip) on a latte, a drip coffee, a panini, oatmeal, and a burek. The burek lacked any flavor at all. The oatmeal tbh was terrible. It was extremely bland and the bottom of my oatmeal was literally dry, as if they hadn't added and liquid to it. It also just tasted like plain Quaker's oatmeal with ZERO toppings or anything. I love supporting local businesses, but I don't like spending $60 on terrible quality food, it's just not it for me. read more
