So, my friend and I decided to share a veggie omelet & a black bean & corn veggie burger. Both were excellent, though the burger was our fave. The burger had such a flavorful chipotle mayo (not spicy); it really complimented the blend of corn and black beans with some guac. Yum! The omelet was quite good, too. I was visiting the area, my cousin suggested we try this place. The parking lot is small, tables outside to dine at if you choose to do so. When you walk in there's a counter and stools, not many tables, the place is small and needs a little updating. It was Father's Day and the wait was long. Stopped here on our way to Mt Vernon for an early breakfast. Large parking lot right next-door. This is a great place with amazing service!! The shrimp & grits are fabulous!!! I popped into Mason-Dixon on Labor Day and it was packed! This restaurant must be beloved locally. Luckily, I did some research beforehand, so I knew to join the online waitlist before I left to head there (&probably should have joined even earlier than that!). The wait ended up being about an hour and you can check your number on the waitlist, which helped everyone manage their expectations. Eventually, I was sat at the bar. I ordered a coffee and the shrimp & grits, and later ordered biscuits & gravy to go. Coffee came out quickly but the food took over a half hour. Service at the bar was not good. She never checked in, never offered to refill my coffee or give me water. I always had to wave her down. The lady next to me never received her orange juice either. The food was amazing though, so I see why people love this place. Since I was sitting at the bar that directly looks into the kitchen, I could see how fast and hard the kitchen staff worked. When there were any issues, they immediately worked to rectify it. The shrinp & grits are delicious and unique. I've never had one where it was more soupy with so much sauce. The staff is still friendly and very patient on waiting on taking our order. This has become an iconic place in Fredericksburg to eat and usually stays crowded. The coffee here is pretty good. However, the food, especially for the price, was lacking compared to when we ate there a few years ago. I ordered a bean and corn burger with potato "salad". The burger was fine, the sauce made it less bland, but the potato salad was literally just 1/4 a cup of potatoes and mayo with a touch of mustard - nothing else! I felt like I paid over $15 for an average sized veggie burger. My kiddo got the kids pancakes which she thoroughly enjoyed but the fruit "salad" was a few chunks of honey dew with a grape. She asked for an egg and it was fine but an egg over medium was a $2.50 additional charge. We felt like we paid $30 for 3 silver dollar pancakes and an ok b it small black bean burger. We first walked in with our service dog, that had been in the car for 12 hours all the way from South Florida, she doesn't like to eat in the car, and our hotel was t ready just yet, so she was hungry. Upon walking in 2 employees gave me a very unpleasant stair down as I walked in (not sure if they realized how unwelcoming their faces were). When I asked for a table out of the way because I need more room, the very first thing they asked me was that a service dog, I said yes, and they looked at each other with a puzzling look which I didn't understand before one lady walked to look for a table. Now, my dog is a hypoallergenic, non shedding golden doodle... she was sitting on the floor next to me, and smelling all the smells and excited to be out of the car. You can be a service dog and still be normal and smelling food, and walking around your handler with excitement to be out of the car. It took her about 5 minutes to relax and lay on the ground next to me. I would like for the staff to be more aware of their faces towards people with service animals. Now the food. On my 12 hour drive, my have a lot of time on my hands while my husband drove. So tic tok to the rescue for places to eat. Well... tic tok let me down big time. I ordered the shrimp and grits. For $19 I was extremely disappointed. Being a Florida girl, I didn't know you can mess up shrimp and grits. The sauce for the grits was so overpowering, I found little to no grits and it was like a soup, way too watery. I asked for a side of grits to try to make it palatable. Didn't work. The coffee I ordered was decaf, not sure if it had been sitting long but it was so bitter I couldn't drink it. My husband chicken soup had zero noodles and poutine was average (and he is generally very fair with his reviews as he was a general manager). I do not recommend this place unfortunately. We only ate because we were starving (and saving our appetite because the tic tok video said it was so good). I've been here a handful of times and it's usually been fine, but my most recent visit left me feeling unwelcome. I can't say for certain, but it seemed our Christian shirts may have influenced how we were treated. From the start, the hostess interaction felt mishandled, she wasn't welcoming, told us there was a 25-minute wait despite several open tables, and made no effort to seat us. My husband and I LOVE Mason-Dixon so much that after hospital stay it was the first food he wanted. We bring our out of town guests to this little cafe and everyone we've taken raves about their food. I stick to the gluten friendly finds on the menu and have never had a reaction. This cafe gets an extra star from me for the incredible service. I wish I caught the name of our waitress because she was amazing. She was patient and kind with helping me find a drink without milk in it (they don't have milk alternatives here). I ended up getting a hot chocolate that was made with water that was nice. I came here to catch up with an old friend and she let us know to just call her when we were ready for the check so we could have time to catch up. We both ordered the big breakfast burger and a side of chocolate chip pancakes. It was a big meal (like suggested in the name). The big breakfast burger came on french toast which was a fun twist. It was a lot of bread for me, so I pushed some of it aside. I like the burger itself a lot. As for the pancakes, they were a different style than I was used to. They were a bit crunchy in a good way, felt very "pan"-cake in the sense that it felt kind of fried. They were different, but I didn't mind this. My friend enjoyed her iced coffee and mimosa. I was impressed with the Yelp check-in process for Mason-Dixon. However, it isn't without its glitches. Check in on Yelp, and when you arrive, tell the hostess you did so. When I got there, she couldn't find my name on the list. She seated us anyway with the available table she had, and no sooner did she do so that I got a text message saying my table was available. So either she overlooked my name, or...? Anyhow, the service was prompt and friendly in spite of how busy they were with a line out the door. Not a particularly large spot. Definitely one for the locals. Food came out pretty quickly. I got the breakfast bowl which is bacon, eggs cheese, home fries, biscuit, and chicken finger topped with sausage gravy. It could've been better had there been more sausage gravy and had everything not been overcooked--the eggs, the bacon, the chicken--which made it on the dry side. Still, not bad. My mom got the crabcake sandwich with potato salad and she loved it. She normally doesn't like things that are too spicy, and the remoulade sauce seemed heavy on the oregano (never heard of oregano in remoulade) for me.
