Affordability: saved $50 total, 2 shots were more expensive than usual vet, 1 was cheaper than usual vet. Exam was cheaper, but not sure an exam actually took place. Experience: I got the shots I came here for. And ended up paying for what I was quoted on the phone even though there were hiccups. My dog was stressed, however, unlike at our typical vet. They do see multiple dogs at a time. This caused me to be a bit stressed as well. The whole process to get 4 shots (even though I only came for 3) with an "exam" (you have to pay for this to get shots, but I'm not sure what exam took place) took 1 hr. The vet was very kind. Initially they took my dog back, where I was not allowed to go, to give my dog an exam and shots. He came back very soon after and they said they would give the shots in the waiting room for my comfort. (I didn't even finish typing my text out that this was happening before they came back). I don't know why I couldn't go back, but this was a very different experience from any vet visit I've had up to this point. I appreciated that the vet got on the floor to administer the shots and was very kind. This meant a lot!!! Nothing about the well being of my dog or their joints was discussed (like has been typical for me in past visits to different vets). My dog did get 4 shots, one I didn't ask for, and they kindly comped me for this. However, they comped me for a shot that my dog DID need as part of annual shots and not the one they DID NOT need. I appreciate the kindness very much so, but and hesitant about the oversight of the 4th shot - to be fully transparent. I received a quote and they had the correct shots when I called to make the appointment. It was not as great of an experience as our normal vet, we did get a free shot (but it's also not needed), I saved $50, but also am not sure that an examination was really done. If you want or need to save money this does the trick!!! But I do have a couple of personal hesitancies. read more

I really love this place for all of my basic pet needs. It was time for my cats to receive their annual physical and updated shots. They have rooms that are specific to cats and dogs but treats for both in all rooms. In the cat room they have calming spray that you can spritz around their carriers to help relax them. Both the techs and the vets were incredibly kind and efficient. They worked to sooth the cats and distract them while the shots were being given. I will return here for future visits. Side note: they have a sign in the lobby about being kind to employees and the fact that they have to have a sign like that is sad. If you aren't thrilled with them, act like a grown up and go somewhere else. It's not ok to abuse the employees who showed up to take care of animals. read more

I thought their service was extremely rude, including the fact that I drove 45 minutes did not even mention to them that they had my animal and care because my husband had dropped our pet off. Asked if I could use their restroom and they said absolutely not, but I had to walk around down the street and try to find someone else to let me in to use the restroom as strongly suggest using a different company is more accommodating. I am now driving down the street looking for some business to let me in to go pee. read more

I really wanted to give them a chance so I took my cat FOUR times in the past two months for an upper respiratory infection that they never actually treated successfully. Their prices are cheap but unfortunately the care is subpar. I ended up spending way more money for all the follow up visits and my cat is still sick. I also called several times and left messages asking to speak to the Vet and no one called back. They are lucky I don't fill a complaint with the Board. Stay away. read more

I took my cat to the Richmond Rd location for respiratory issues. I think they could tell I was nervous because everyone from the receptionist, to the technicians, to the veterinarian were very calming and reassuring while talking to me about his condition. I was nervous about the cost of treatment but compared to other clinics I have been to for similar issues their prices were much more reasonable. I also didn't feel pressured to do the full estimate all at once. They were able to work with my budget, treat my cat, and even offered for me to come back for further treatment or tests as I could afford it. read more

I've taken my pets to Afford-A-Vet, Richmond Road location for several years but now as of Saturday, February 4, 2023 we will not be returning. I was returning this day so Bella, our miniature longhair dachshund could receive her last Parvo vaccine. The techs did their normal greeting of us and one was familiar with Bella. We were signed in and taken to an examination room. While waiting for the tech to come in to take Bella to the back for her shots as normal, there was a dog outside our room growling. Bella being a dog made a small growling sound back. The techs entered the room and greeting me with smiles and informed me since it's Bella's last visit the doctor would be in after Bella gets her shots for a final update. I agreed and off they went with Bella. Not long after Dr. Gale-Dyer entered the room with one of the techs. We greeted each other and I notice Bella hadn't been given her shots because the doctor had two needles in her hand. After our greeting she proceeded to tell me Bella was fearful. I replied ok, but aren't you guys trained to help them feel comfortable. She said, "yes, but she is pass the age of fear. But, Bella is only 5.5 months old. Yes, past the age of fear, she should not be fearful. Megan said she is fearful as well. Megan is a tech at the clinic. I calmly told her, so you guys don't get large dogs and/or cats in here that are afraid. Aren't you trained to handle these type of situations? Yes, but there is training and medication for this. I will not have Bella on medication as she is not aggressive and threating. This doctor starting to raise her voice at me. Said, first it's fear and than they bite! I told her you will not label Bella as an aggressive dog when she had done nothing to deserve this type of labeling from you. She proceeded to snatch off Bella sweater from her body then proceeded with giving Bella the first injection and Bella let out a loud yelp. Then the second injection hurt Bella as she tried to get away from her. The vet claimed Bella bit her. I said, where? Her reply, not bad enough to break the skin. There was no bite, Bella gave her a warning. Dr. Gale-Dyer provoke this situation to prove her point. Vets are suppose to deescalate situations and most importantly keep the patient in mind. Our Bella was mistreated and there was nothing I could do about it. Bella and our Australian shepherds will go elsewhere. We must speak up for our pet and defend them when warranted as they can't speak nor define themselves. read more

Very affordable, very friendly staff! We brought in a cat that our formers neighbors abandoned when they moved. We knew nothing of the cat's history, only he needed a loving family. The staff treated Oliver with so much compassion. They explained everything to us with his care and treatment. They also recommended a place to go to get the boy neutered to help us save money. Vets charge a flat fee for an exam, office visit. The fee is not charged by the time spent and there is no additional fee for asking questions. Of course, other fees are charged for additional procedures and for medication. This is the way all veterinarians I have ever taken my pets to charge. Afford a Vet charges $15 for a pet exam. Yesterday I took two pets to Afford a Vet. They had back to back appointments starting at 3:30. It was almost 5pm when I walked out the door. The two appointments took less than 1 1/2 hours. My pets and I spent a lot of time waiting, time talking to the vet assistant, perhaps 10 minutes talking to the vet (that's for both bets), time correcting errors, time checking out. I did not complain about their poor time management. I just received an unsigned email from the staff at Afford a Vet. It informed me that because my two appointments took a lot of time I will hereinafter be charged $55 for each exam for any one of my pets. I spent perhaps 10 minutes with the vet for both appointments. I am blamed for their poor time management and criticized for asking the vet questions. The email mentions the time the two appointment took and says, " If you would like to continue our relationship and for us to accommodate your inquisitive mind future examinations will be $55.00 and recheck examinations will be $27.50. " Rechecks are $13.50 and exams are $15.00 for people who do not have inquisitive minds. I have never heard of people being charged extra because they have inquisitive minds, because they have to wait or because the staff is poor at time management. Blaming a client for the clinic's inefficency and then demanding more money for the extra time the staff takes is unethical, possilbly even criminal. Then implying that the extra time and therefore extra charge is because the pet owner asked questions about the condition, care, and treatment of the pet! Surely it is unethical to tell owners that they will be charged more if they ask questions, if they are too "inquisitive", and to snidely criticize a pet owner for asking questions. This place obviously doesn't want pet owners asking questions and blames pet owners for the staff's own bad time management. Charging more than the regular fee is unethical and so is demanding owners pay extra for asking questions. Even when the et doesn't know the answers. Perhaps that is the reason for the exorbitant charge for asking questions, to discourage pet owners from embarassing vets by asking questions they can't answer. Surely it is unethcial to discourage pet parents from asking questions by charging them outrageous fees for doing so. Making pet parents who care enough to ask questions pay over 3 times as much!!!!! Took our pup in for her first check up. The staff was very friendly and the vet and nurse(?) both treated our doggy with care and answered all our silly questions. This is a good option to get your pets' vaccinations and regular check ups at a reasonable price. We will probably go to another vet for her long term care or if she gets sick as they lack full facilities but as far as basic needs Afford-A-Vet is perfect for the budget conscious. Despite their goofy name, they provide quality basic care at a price that won't be beat. read more

We have been visiting this office for a few years now. They are the ONLY office in Lexington willing to save our dog Frankie when he had Parvo in 2011. They kept him in quarantine and gave him medication until he was well enough to be taken home. I am so thankful they were able to save my best friend's life. Just had to say our experience at Afford-A-Vet on Richmond Road. I didn't have a bunch of money so the name sounds good. However you go in and it's anything but affordable. My cat has skin allergies and I walked out with a $130 bill and meds to give for 2 weeks. It didn't work so I called them back and said my cat is just getting worse and they just want me to pay to come back in again. There not helpful at all and I paid $130 and got NO results at all. After talking to multiple people there is VERY clear they care only about the money and NOT our pets. So beware. read more

Do not go to the office on Richmond road. A worker by the name of Christie is very rude and obnoxious. I had been using this office for many years until I had to take my dog for a flu vaccine in order to be boarded at PetSuites. Christie argued with me for at least 10 minutes stating I needed to get many more other shots for my dog. She actually wrote on the receipt that my dog needed more shots and vaccines. When I took my dog to be boarded at PetSuites they were very surprised that was written on the receipt as they stated my dogs records were up-to-date and no other vaccines were needed. Obviously Christie think she knows more about PetSuites policies then pet suites. I now use the office on Pasadena and they are very friendly and apologized profusely for Christy's rudeness. read more

Just no! So we go in because my cats eye is watering for a week right. Nothing major. The tech tells me they can clip his nails too for around $10.00 I tell her he does not like getting that done and she assures me it will be fine. Next thing I know she comes in and tells me it took four of them to hold him down to cut his nails and now I have to pay $20.00. Also that during this torture he peed and pooed on himself! I am so infuriated and refused to pay the extra charge. I told her if he was fighting that bad to where he had an accident on himself why in the world would they continue on with that?! And without my permission! I brought my cat to get his eye checked not to get held down by four vets and get so upset where he wet and craps himself! Unacceptable...just to make an extra $10.00? Next time Afford-A-Not-Vet ask the owners permission before you decide to do this type of crap to our pets! Never again! read more

I have taken my pets in several for coughing, to skin infection to vaccines. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the staff and Doctors. They worked with my budget and when I called back to answered all my questions. My older dog picked up fleas at the dog park and developed a bad rash. After 2 weeks on antibiotics. It was much better but perfect. So I called back a couple days before I was out of pills and was abel to get a refill without another exam. Which I was worried about after reading the previously review. However, they said I could get the refill without an exam because I called before my prescription ran out. The second bottle of medication did the trick and my Daisy was all better.:) and I was able to save a good bit of money. I would recommend it to my friends. THANKS AFFORD-A-VET!!! read more

I have had my puppy since she was 9 weeks old. She is now 6 and a half months old. From the day I got her she was getting sick so I took her here to be tested for parvo. She ended up having worms. Over the course of the more than 4 months they have "treated" her for worms 3 times. Almost once a month. She also is on a flea and heart worm medicine (both of which are to prevent worms) yet she still has them and has yet to rid of them. With this vet I have been out over $1,000 in the past four and a half months. We have gone to them 7 times. Almost twice a month. 10 days ago I took her for her spay incision. They also did a fecal test which cost $14.20 that they said came back negative. I decided to switch vets today when my pup pooped out a 4 inch round worm. This vet who uses all name brand products did a fecal test which cost $14.00. This test also showed that my pup was infested with round worms and hook worms. I'm surprised to think that she's been on heart worm, flea medicine and dewormed 3 times in 4 and a half months and is still infested with worms? Not to mention it was cheaper to go to a name brand vet than one who uses generic products? This doesn't make sense at all. I'd say high way robbery. I was continually giving them money to help pay rent I'm sure rather than my puppy actually being helped. I'd give them a 0 stars if I could. read more
