I originally got an estimate from a local (we rarely use local companies concerning roofing, tree removal etc. because when we've gotten estimates from companies from other towns, they've consistently saved us $$$) company for a driveway repaving along with blocks placed on the side edging of each side of the driveway. It was for approximately $7,500. My wife was heading to the store and saw Affordable doing a neighbor's driveway. She stopped and asked if they'd be interested in giving us an estimate on ours. The foreman agreed and came over and gave us an est. of $5,800, my wife countered with "$5,500 and the job is yours. They accepted. The next day the crew was at our home mid-morning. By late afternoon they were almost completed when a strong thunderstorm came. They may have completed the job in that 1day, if not for the storm. They returned the next day and completed the job by noon. The completed job looked great, blocks look great on edging. Also, the workers cleaned up every particle of scrap on our property and blew and swept the surrounding street area. A job well done, I recommend them highly. read more

This company's name promises what they say affordable and the work they do is beyond expectations. Everything is done right and to your satisfaction. This is a third-generation asphalt company and they have the equipment and knowledge to get things done right the first time. My driveway required additional drains which they put in for an additional fee and it was very reasonable for the amount of work that had to be done. Do not use this company!!!! They did my driveway in 3/9/20 and the below pictures were taken 3/16/20. The driveway came out horrible and the owner (Sam) kept promising me that they would come back and fix it. After months of going back and fourth with him they never showed up to fix the driveway. Sam kept giving excuses till he stopped answering my calls and responding to messages. Even if this company gives you a good price, don't use them!!! Affordable Asphalt redid my drive, replaced my railroad ties with Belgian blocks, made a new paver entrance walkway and fixed the existing retaining wall and pavers around my pool all for a respectable price. They showed up when they said they would. They worked from 7 am until 7 pm. The crew was very respectful and hard working. We are very happy with work that has been completed. Stay away from this company. It has no integrity and it is run by a guy called Sam. The job they do is so shoddy that it doesn't last. I am suing this company as I write this now. Not only do they do a bad job, they also damage your property. They damaged my mailbox and almost a year later it has not been fixed. Sam the owner or part owner, not sure what the story is, does not stay on the job. He leaves his boys to do the job and those ones either don't follow instructions or don't know what they are doing. I was told by Sam that they would shave down my drive way and apply bonding. They did not do that. My driveway is now looking like an old driveway even though I just did it last year. They damaged my mailbox and Sam tried to increase the price of his work so he could cover the price of fixing the mailbox. Only a sleaze bag would do something like that. Unfortunately it's time to leave a not so positive review. Sam started out great. But things quickly changed when I questioned several things. I was never provided a contract for the work he stated he would do. When we discussed over the phone what would be done for 4K it's not what actually was done. He dropped his team off and they were supposed to rip up my driveway, level it with rocks and repave. They came when I wasn't home and started paving over the old driveway only after ripping up the end of the driveway. I was called 3/4 way through and advised they needed more asphalt and it would cost several hundred more. My other quotes were around 5K. We also talked about adding gravel to an area I wanted to pave next year and he said "no problem". He's been avoiding calls to ask him where the gravel is and he just says "you didn't pay for it anyway". Tried yelling at my husband when he called to find out why it's over a month later and it's still not done. Unfortunately the $4500 I paid was paid in full with the understanding this was an honest guy. Definitely feel like I was taken advantage off as for another $500 I would have gotten the job I actually paid for! Giving two stars as work was done but wouldn't recommend unless you get a contract in writing before you pay and work is done. Lesson Learned. read more

SAVE YOURSELF THE HASSLE AND LOOK ELSEWHERE!!! We agreed on a price of $8700 to replace my driveway and install Belgium block. I felt as though the price was too good to be true . My feeling would prove to be correct. When it was all said and done I wrote a check for almost 11k. I feel as though his reasons for the up charge were fabricated to make up for the low bid. THIS IS MY OPINION. About 3 days into the job, I was told that the up charge would be between $1400 and $2000. Supposedly for the cost of extra gravel and to dump the clay. Sam said that he would need to purchase extra gravel to deal with clay that was under the driveway. He said that they would dig the clay out and replace it with gravel. When the gravel was delivered to my home and did not appear to be much at all. It definitely didn't appear to be "extra", given the width and length of my driveway. I paid attention to see if they would do what he said they would do in terms of removing the clay. They began putting down the gravel and of course they DID NOT remove clay from the areas that Sam said would require extra gravel. Although there was no extra gravel used or clay to be dumped I was still charged an additional $2250. I was told that the additional cost was for the installation of a drain (which we NEVER discussed) and for double layering parts of the driveway with asphalt. Prior to the job being finished I pointed out that one of my sprinkler heads had been broken during the job. I was assured that it would be fixed. However, that would prove not to be the case. He even came back to do a job for my neighbor and still didn't fix my sprinkler head. I've reached out via text, he responds each time saying that some will be there tomorrow. However, no one ever shows up. This has happened twice this week. In total, I've probably communicated to him 5 times that my sprinkler head was broken. At this point I'm just going to call my sprinkler company and eat the cost of the repair. You'll be a top priority when he's trying to earn your business but once the check had been deposited, it's a wrap! In my opinion that's just not a good way to do business. I read the negative reviews about this company but chose to take a gamble. He presents as a nice enough guy. I'm mostly happy with the way my driveway looks but I would ABSOLUTELY NOT do business here again. read more

Sam was super nice when he came to price the job and to secure the job. He promised 9-10 parking spots in my driveway and he SAID he will put down 2 layers of 3" of material. He said yes to what I asked for and when the job started, him and his team started cutting corners. They didnt put down 2 layers of material. Putting 2 layers down means laying 3" down going over with a roller and then put down another 3". This was never done. He only gave me 7 parking spots when we discussed 9-10. He squeezed in 8 and 1 of the spots is not usable. His response was the amount of parking spots was never in the contract. I guess a verbal communication about the job doesnt mean anything to Sam. He also threatened me and threatened to burn my house down and rip up my driveway bc I accidentally gave him a check from an old account. This was a honest mistake on my end and I informed Sam about it before the bank told him. Attached are images to the type of work he did and threatening messages sent. Please use someone else as Sam may or may not do the right job. After getting to know Sam, doing the right job will only depends on how much profit he is making. Final note, I asked Sam to come and fix the driveway to have 8 parking spots. He agreed and after trying to schedule the repair for about a week he went MIA and never responded. Not sure how to rate this company. We found the company by watching they paved our neighbor's driveway. They had only one 5 star review in July 2018 which was removed from the current reviews. The workers did a lousy job at the garage entrance. Pavement was half an inches higher than the garage floor. I was tripped several times and almost fell down at least twice. It took 2 1/2 months before Sam came back to fix it. In addition, the pavement was one inch higher than the stone portion of the driveway. After the past winter, the asphalt and store junction was torn up by the snow plow. In April 2019, texted photo to Sam for repair and estimate. Again texted him 2 additional messages in the past 7 months, he has NOT replied back. They also paved the parking lot for our church in Martinsville. They did extremely poor job to grade the pavement. Water and ICE would accumulate in front of the church's front entrance. Now, the church needs to find a new company to redo the grading and pave the parking lot. read more

I reached out to Sam and team in February, got a quote for 3,000 sq ft worth of driveway and backyard that needed to be ripped out and replaced. Gave me the best quote then the pandemic hit. Had to push back the project a couple of months and things started to settle down I reached back out to Sam and the quote was still valid and we set a date. Sam and team came and did a fantastic job!!! The work they did was outstanding and working with Sam was the best. True, honest and looking out for his customers and workers. Watching these guys install my neighbor's driveway in disbelief. Dumping asphalt in the middle of the street and material rolling over the curb into the neighbor's yard and moving it back and forth with a skid loader. What outfit does this shoddy work? Loose asplaht all over the street. To say they didn't complete the job with the recommended asphalt temperature is an understatement. There is only 61 minutes to set the lift per guidelines and the material was sitting for hours. Base work didn't look good and they charged my neighbor $10K for a Newark special fly by night job... Hope these guys go to jail or at least get fined for litering the street. read more

I hired Sam from Affordable Asphalt on 9/24/19 and gave him an $8,000 deposit that day. He was supposed to complete the job within 5 calendar days. After over a month, nearly no work was completed. I asked for a refund. Sam refused. I asked him to finish the work and he stalled until mid December. Every week he promised he'd have someone there and every week he came up with a new excuse. On 12/19/19, I finally had to get a new construction team to do the project. I wanted to put this behind me, so I offered Sam the option to just send me a partial refund on my deposit and avoid a legal battle. Sam texted me, "I'll see you in court". I later found out that the minimal amount of work Sam actually did, was done totally wrong and had to be re-done. Sam forced me to go thru all the legal proceedings (which took about a year). Judge finally issued me a judgement against Sam for $7,197.90. Sam has still not paid. Now I'll have to start legal proceedings for writs and liens against him and his business. Even if he pays today, it's already been over a year and I've spent hours with the courts. If Sam does eventually pay voluntarily, I will update this review. read more

Folks I hate to say it but steer clear of Sam the Scam king. This guy promised great service and to start at 8 AM, then 10 AM then no answer and finally the job started at 3 PM. Stopped working as the sun went down. After that day called multiple times, but after he accidentally answered the phone, promising to call back I've realized he's never going to complete this job as promised. It's sad that the check was cashed and work never finished and pretty sure his workers were illegal aliens to boot as well. read more

Sam at Affordable Asphalt is a thief. I asked him to do my driveway. He told me that the concrete precast basins were 1200 , when they sell for $400. I gave him a deposit and money for catch basins. He also said he would do a linear drain with concrete. He installed no concrete around linear drain. He threw the catch basins in half dug holes. The plastic pipes from catch basins go uphill !!! To drain the basin. After doing 5% work, he left. After construction has been allowed again, i have called and texted him multiple times. He did not pick up. I finally used another number and then he picked up. He said he will not come back to the job. After I paid him $5500 on $10500 job, he refuses to complete the job or return my money.
