They will take your money, deliver services eventually, and not return your calls when there's problems (there will be). They've been screwing up the death certificates for months, made two promises to deliver, then disappeared without a trace. There's literally no one to talk to. My mother has been there 3 weeks and I have no idea what's going on, They don't answer the phones, they don't return the calls left at their answering service,. and I have various entities chastising me for the want of a death certificate, which they haven't even transmitted to the Office of Vital Records yet. It must have been a miracle that I even got through to this company on the first try to book and pay the full fees up front for this total lack of service. There's absolutely no way I can wait another 3-5 weeks for them to generate the physical death certificates which I also paid for up front and now I have to go down to Vital Records and pay for them again. When and IF this company ever submits the records to them. And I have no way of knowing that until I go down there in person and fill out the forms and pay the non-refundable fee even if the record still isn't on file file yet. Today their phones don't even kick over to the answering service. Which is is the third time in two weeks that I can't even leave a message for a callback (which they would of course have ignored again). If I don't speak with somebody there today, I'm back-charging with the bank and having her rescued and taken to another service provider. read more

Overall I was not impressed with Affordable Cremation. I would definitely seek out another place when I am in need to cremation services again. My first complaint is that they were not helpful when it came to posting my husband's obituary. When they copied and pasted it the formatting was horrible. They had to have noticed. They should have fixed it or contacted me giving me instructions on how to correct it. We finally got it fixed but it took multiple emails and phone calls to get it corrected Secondly, they don't want to talk to people on the phone. I was told to email. For a business that is dealing with death, they should be kinder and more willing to develop a relationship with the loved one. It should be a person's job to answer the phones and communicate kindly to customers. I sent one email and it was never answered. I finally had to enlist my sister to take over contacting you because the lack of customer service and kindness toward me was horrible after such a devastating loss. I live with guilt of sending me sweet husband to a place that treated me this way. I can only hope and pray that they handled him with respect. When my husband was picked up after passing away at our home, instead of taking the gurney down the hallway, they wrapped him in my sheets and carried him down the hallway. My brother in law kept telling me not to watch because it was horrible. My sister in law was so upset that she called and complained. When I went to pick up my husband's ashes, it took a while for someone to open the door. Then I was greeted with, "Do you have an appointment?" Of course I did. I wouldn't just randomly show up on a Friday morning. We were left in the front room that was sad. Curtain not straight, drab furniture and a flower arrangement that had seen better days. There was also a fake air freshener smell in the room. They weren't prepared for us and it took sometime for someone to come and help up. The who is experience was not what I had expected after working with a funeral home when my dad passed. We were treated with kindness throughout the whole experience. It was the opposite here. It's been almost a year since we lost my father. When he went on Hospice in February 2024 I was full of worry trying to figure out how everything was going to work. I called several local funeral homes and was stunned at both their attitudes and the costs involved with trying to make arrangements for when my father passed and cremation. It really felt like they were all about the money, with estimates well over $3k. I called Falcon Family Funeral and Cremation and spoke to Joe. I can not tell you how much that phone call and speaking to Joe put me at ease. I described my situation and concerns and was truly astounded with what Joe said. He told me not to worry, that they would be there for us to take care of my father when we needed them. He told me to go make the most of my remaining time with my father and that we would take care of all of the other details after he passed. He said to give his name and number to Hospice and then put it out of my mind. We talked for a while about family and my situation. I tear up even now thinking about how kind, compassionate, and helpful Joe was. Unlike the other places, he wasn't focused on the money (which ended up being about $700). Falcon Family was as good as his word. The morning my father passed away I called them. They picked up right away, said, "We're on our way", and picked up my father shortly after lunch. They assisted us with posting obituaries, ordering copies of the death certificates and they remained in communication throughout the cremation process. The day I went to pick up my father's remains and paperwork was stressful. I was still in the midst of processing and was very emotional, and it must have been apparent when I arrived at their office. Rather than just conduct "business" and hand off my dad, I was invited in to have a seat and talk. I was able to sit and share and unload, and Joe and his team let me know I was in the company of caring friends. I cried and shared stories, as they did, of people we had loved and lost. I cannot tell you how expertly they made such a hard experience easier, just by listening, supporting, and taking care of everything. While it was never about the cost, I had the best experience one could hope for in such a situation and cannot recommend Joe and his business enough. read more

This review was mostly written this time last year, but I didn't have the heart to finish and post it until now. I made the decision to make this review more about the process than my experience; to help someone doing research like I was at the time, since it can be overwhelming. That being said these prices are from the end of 2022 and if you have a specific question about my experience you can always send me a message. I dealt with multiple people here and overall this is a wonderful service. I called while my father was in hospice to be prepared and get instructions, they were very kind to me and very helpful. While I was calling the Bryan office, it was my experience through this process that the phone systems between the Bryan and Austin locations are combined in some way and their answering service is as well. Their website is very helpful if you need to get information in advance. Since my father was in hospice, all we had to do was provide the phone number for ABCS to hospice and they called once my father was pronounced. They will send someone out to retrieve your loved ones body. They do prioritize removals from the home over the hospital, so if there are multiple calls in a night, they may use a third party to dispatch to your home to handle this in a timely manner (more on that later) but they do have their own staff that they utilize first. They will then email the next of kin several forms to be filled out in the next several days and transport the body to Austin. These forms include a cremation authorization, an authorization to embalm and a death certificate order form. On the cremation authorization you can order urns and engraving as well, but I believe you need to look at their catalog online and specify on the form. I did call several times for help during this process and they were very helpful. There will be a later email about the vital statistics and the accuracy of this form being signed off is necessary before the death certificates can be issued. The death certificates need to be paid for in advance and typically take 10-14 days to arrive in the mail. This is due to the current cost in the state but I believe the first one is $20-25 with additional copies being $4. They had a bundle cost for 10 and 15 and I believe we got 10 for around $55. If the 10-14 days won't work, the form had an option for expediting for an additional $30 and I believe this was an overnight service after processing instead of regular mail. The timeframe for remains depends upon how quickly you provide the cremation packet, the doctors, how long of a wait there is ahead of your loved ones cremation and the type of urn you order. At the end of September I was told it could take up to 4 to 6 weeks total, but it was sooner than that. A few years ago my parents used this process for my grandfather and I think it took 2-3 weeks. You will set up an appointment to go to Austin to pick up the remains and pay at that time. Although I believe arrangements can be made to have the remains shipped to you, I'm not sure of those details as my mother did not trust USPS with tracking for such an important task. The cost of cremation was $775 plus any expediting you choose and the type of urn you choose and if you arrange service through them. I did not look into their packages for arranging a funeral service. They will also post a photo and obituary on their website if you email it to them, at no additional cost. There were three mishaps throughout this process, which was about a month long. The first was the third party who picked up my father was inappropriate with my mother and sister. I spoke to ABCS about this who forwarded me to the owner, Robert, who took it very seriously and handled the situation. As I stated above, they only use a third party when time is a factor and they are already on a call. The second was an unnecessary delay for the death certificates. Anthony handled this situation and accommodated me by sending me a scan to handle my fathers affairs as I had travelled across the state to do so, and the physical copy wouldn't be available until several days later. The delay shouldn't have occurred, but they held themselves accountable and were accommodating, so I wasn't very concerned about this. The third was a much bigger deal, but I do acknowledge they did what they could to make it right and I do appreciate it. Long story short, there was a miscommunication and his ashes had not arrived in time for the appointment to pick up. However, they did agree to meet my mother and sister outside of business hours and offered a partial refund to rectify the situation. Again, I'm leaving out a lot of details because of limited space, but the important thing is that they did resolve it and if the person I had been dealing with on the issue had been available I don't think I would have been given the wrong information in the first place. read more

My dad passed away at the end of January 20, 2023 from COVID after spending weeks in the hospital. I had pretty much taken off work most of the time while he was in the hospital, so by the time he passed, money was very tight and I found Affordable Burial & Cremation Service to have the lowest price. Over the next week, I got emails to complete the paperwork for the cremation and death certificate order. During the process, they tell you that they can't give you a date for when the remains will be ready for pick-up. Which was fine. So when I finally got the bill on February 7, I assumed I would get a call or another email letting me know the remains were ready to be picked up. I wasn't really in a big rush, since I was having to clear out my dad's apartment a couple hours drive away. I called the next week on February 15, and left an message with the answering service. Never got a callback. I emailed them the next week on February 23, again, no reply. I called them again on February 27 and was able to speak to someone to see if my dad's remains were ready to be picked up. They were, but I had to schedule an appointment. Scheduled one for the next day, since I couldn't schedule one for later that day. Went to my appointment to collect dad's remains. Signed the paperwork and paid the balance due, maxing out my credit card, since I have been using it a lot since I haven't been working while I deal with my dad's affairs. When I got back, I noticed all the paperwork -- the certificate of cremation and the death certificates were all dated February 7, 2023. So it seems that my dad's remains sat on a shelf for weeks because no one would reply to my calls or emails. The same day I picked up my dad's remains, I found out that FEMA would cover the cost of the cremation if it was a result of COVID. I called them and submitted my application, along with my documentation. They told me it could take a couple weeks. That was okay. I was still trying to clear out my dad's place so I figured, I could manage for a couple weeks. March comes along and I notice my application is still pending. I call FEMA for an update. They tell me that they received the application and the documentation, but have not been able to contact the funeral home to verify the information. I call the funeral home and get ahold of someone and they tell me that they have no record of FEMA calling, and that I should tell them to try and call again. Which I do, and wait. At this time, I have to go back to work, because the bills are piling up and dad was living month-to-month off his Social Security and military pension, so dad didn't leave me any money or have insurance to cover his final expenses. I go online a couple weeks later and it still shows as pending. A couple weeks later .. still nothing. In mid-April 2023 I call FEMA again ... they tell me the same thing ... they have left a message and not received a callback. I get transferred to a special agent who calls Affordable Burial & Cremation Service and gets ahold of their answering service. They takes their message and gives them the name of the owner and says they'll pass the message on. I call the funeral home the next day and they tell me they don't have a record of FEMA calling. A complete lie. It's now the end of June and Affordable Burial and Cremation Service still has not responded to FEMA's calls. It's hard enough having to lose my dad, but to have to deal with a business who writes you off once they have your money is just cold. If you want an affordable burial or cremation, Affordable Burial & Cremation Service, is true to their name, but don't expect any SERVICE after they collect their money. At the time, it was all that I could afford, but I regret going with them simply because they made something that was already hard, much harder, simply because they don't seem to care. read more

I was referred to this company by the manager of my Mother's assisted living place. My Mother passed November 2nd, 2024 and I just now, after numerous emails and phone calls, got to pick her ashes up with death certificates today, Dec 13th, 2024. I didn't need anything from them but the ashes. They do not communicate with you. They only email you when they get around to filling out and ordering the death certificate and of course the amount you will be paying them. $700, ashes plus 10 certificates. They took so long that my bank froze my Mother's checking account because they are apparently notified of the passing when social security retracts a deposit. VERY inconvenient and alarming when you are the Executor. It is an old, tiny, dank place on the eastside so being by myself, it was difficult to find, easy to drive right by and frankly sketchy. My mom passed away in August. My friend finally got my mom's ashes Nov.13th! And I live in the UK now but couldn't even have her ashes shipped here thanks to some bureaucratic county health inspector (even though pneumonia isn't on the list of banned contagious diseases), so my friend in Texas has to scatter her ashes there! Email communication with staff was very sporadic and I honestly felt there was no compassion and they were quite insensitive and cold in their email responses. For people working in the bereavement sector where compassion is paramount, they showed no sympathy or sensitivity. It is all about money. STEER CLEAR of this company!!!! read more

In regards to the Dessau location: I write this as a crematory operator and funeral professional. Several times a week you can see black smoke billowing out from this location. I write this review while watching the black smoke rise while middle school and elementary kids get off school across the street. Either your afterburner isn't firing, the temp at which you cremate is way too low, the size of the person in question is very large and should be cremated at night, your operator has no idea what hes doing OR simply doesn't care. Shame on you guys! I highly recommend you take your loved ones elsewhere as its apparent to me these folks don't know what they're doing or simply don't care. I will be reaching out to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. (For those who don't know: With today's modern equipment, there should be no smoke emitted into the environment. They didn't call after my son body was finally released from his death at Brodie Ranch ( it took 2 months for the investigation/release). When I finally got someone in the office, not the answering service, she was extremely rude and said they called 2 months ago and it was my fault that he was on their shelve waiting to be claimed! when I went to get him, that person was extremely nice . This is such a great caring company! When my husband passed away and was officially pronounced, they were called and came as soon as they could. They were so nice and helpful. They made me feel he was in good hands. My husband did not want any fuss and didn't want to spend anything on his funeral. I told him that wasn't possible, so we chose this company for their affordability. I was a little apprehensive at first, but they give the same quality care as any funeral company I have known. My family lost two parents this year. In February, my Father, after a terribly agonizing two years of fighting COPD, decided enough was enough. He stopped all treatment, and moved to comfort level meds at his home. He passed unexpectedly soon (within 1 week), and although he said how he wished his remains were to be treated, we literally ran out of time to arrange specifics. So when Encompass Hospice Care, finished the requisite duties, (another 2 reviews are coming), we knew that Dad had Gone Home, and wished his remains treated with respect, but no whistles or bells, done with his remains. All we knew was he wanted to be cremated, and where he wished his ashes interned. Dad wanted inexpensive, and we were advised Affordable was inexpensive, yet compassionate. We called, and a gentleman came, dressed well, and empathetic. He asked if we wanted to step out, while he prepared my father for transport. That in itself was a blessing. Here the point is, that the gentleman arrived, appropriately dressed, polite, and empathetic. It was clear he had seen this kind of situation and Immediately walked in our shoes. He dealt with Dads remains in an expeditious manner and everything was handled properly. We had some issues with the time it took to clear paperwork, but they said that the state vital records department had some issues and they were down to a snails pace. We confirmed that as we called the state office, and yeah, it was quite clear that it was NOT Affordable's doing. So, unless you want the bronze casket guaranteed to last a century or more, go here! The lack of competence is difficult to work around. There appears to be no management to reach (family owned business?), so if it is not going well you are out of luck. Four weeks after my husband passed away, I was so done with this company that I ask my son to step in and deal with them. Graciously he did, and was able to get my husband's ashes returned, with a incorrect death certificate and no flag to recognize my husband's twenty-three years of service to our country. My husband, a veteran of the Vietnam War, died in June. The most important thing I asked this business to do they did not do - inform the Air Force so he could have a military service. When I called to tell the owner he told me he found the folder on an employee's desk and apologized. Attention to detail is crucial when working with veterans.
