I went to the office on the premises and asked for directions. Very easy to find them. It's pretty much straight out the office door. I took pictures to capture the moment. It must have been a miracle that I even got through to this company on the first try to book and pay the full fees up front for this total lack of service. There's absolutely no way I can wait another 3-5 weeks for them to generate the physical death certificates which I also paid for up front and now I have to go down to Vital Records and pay for them again. When and IF this company ever submits the records to them. And I have no way of knowing that until I go down there in person and fill out the forms and pay the non-refundable fee even if the record still isn't on file file yet. Today their phones don't even kick over to the answering service. Which is is the third time in two weeks that I can't even leave a message for a callback (which they would of course have ignored again). If I don't speak with somebody there today, I'm back-charging with the bank and having her rescued and taken to another service provider.

Ms. Minh Anh was incredibly knowledgeable about Buddhist funeral customs and fluent in English and Vietnamese, which was comforting for both older Vietnamese speaking relatives and younger English speaking relatives. My mom was grateful that Ms. Minh Anh walked her through everything step by step and was reliable, communicative, and accessible from beginning to end whenever there were concerns. She also assisted with preparing decor and furniture for the Buddhist funeral. Since our family had to leave to go to the temple after the casket lowering, we could not see the grave being covered with soil/grass turf. For this reason, we were super touched that Ms. Minh Anh sent us a photo afterward of the covered grave site to our family members so that they were updated and reassured. Ms. Minh Anh shared that she wanted to help other families with the funeral process after her dad passed. This was evident in the thought and care she put into the funeral service, and we are forever grateful for her, the funeral director, and Cook-Walden.

She had not right to touch any of his things. My son mattered. His things matter. Our memories with him matter. How dare she throw his things away without notifying us. I was in the office today and they had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to place a $3 bouquet on his grave. No, I don't want your HEB flowers, ma'am. I want my mom's Christmas tree and the Kochina that my son and I purchased at Bryce Canyon. I want the coaster that has his beautiful photo on it. I want the lights that I placed back in his area so that it's not dark back there. I want you to show my son respect. He deserves it. Every single person who is placed out there deserves it. It is tacky and hateful of you to treat their things like they aren't important. Their lives and their things are important whether you think so or not! I would rather bring my don't ashes home with me than have them somewhere that could care less about him. His name was Martin, and he matters!

So super helpful to get the full on sales pitch while finalizing my 2 year olds final resting place. Fast forward to December 2020. My aforementioned Dad passed away. His death was very unexpected. We knew he wanted to be buried next to his granddaughter and immediately made arrangements for him to be transported from Houston to Austin. Everything related to the transfer and grave-side service was handled great. We took great care with designing my Dad's marker. My Mom placed the final order December 2020. We were told it would be placed on 3-5 months. It is now almost a year later and still no marker. My Mom initially reached out to her contact at Cook Walden (Kyle) multiple times via email with no response. She called and left multiple messages with no response. Luckily I live in Austin and was able to park myself at the funeral home until someone would speak to me. After multiple assurances that 'everything was being done' to get my Dad's marker placed, I left. I reached out via text message multiple times and was told that 'shipping delays were causing delivery issues, etc.'. Sure. This would be a valid excuse for a month, 3 months, 6 month delay, but it's been a YEAR. A whole YEAR. My last text message was unanswered.

Embalming wasn't don't until days after death, allowing bloat to set in. He was absolutely unrecognizable and most of our family chose to let only those over the age of 18 to see him and even us adults had a hard time seeing our loved one in such a way. The staff was extremely unprofessional and refused to let us speak to the manager of the establishment. Because we asked to speak to management several times with multiple issues such as being late with the viewing, forgetting his personal items, forgetting items that were suppose to be on the casket, etc... staff became extremely rude and defensive and shooting ugly looks to our family. This was the worst treatment of our deceased and living loved ones that I have ever encountered.

Well laid out, several options fro side rooms and seating for guests to gather. This was helpful considering the variety of people in attendance, there were children, babies, adult children, and step families. Having different areas to gathered help keep things smooth without scratchy situations flaring up. (That was later) 4. The family felt like "good" about how things were handled. The last thing they needed was more stress, so it was very nice to see them content with the arrangements.

Bio: Susanna Dickinson was the wife of Captain Almaron Dickinson and was the sole adult Anglo survivor that witnessed the massacre at the Battle of the Alamo. On the morning of March 6, 1836, as the troops of General Antonio López de Santa Anna stormed the mission, Captain Dickinson ran to his wife, reported that all was lost, and expressed hope that she could save herself and their child. Although he died at the Alamo, his wife and child Angelina survived. Following the fall of the Alamo, Susanna was escorted from the Alamo mission, interviewed by Santa Anna himself and sent by him with a message to Sam Houston. This is Austin's oldest cemetery, with burials dating back to the 1830's. These days, you see so…read moremany of the perfectly manicured cemeteries with the evenly spaced, well-polished gravestones. The older section of Oakwood cemetery is just as painted by literature and movies - crumbled down gravestones, crawling vines, unnamed dead, multiple generations of families buried together, and wrought iron fencing. Go find the graves of John Henry Faulk, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, and Ima Hogg! I hope I have not disturbed any of the dead during my visits there or my Yelp review. I simply like to stroll through Oakwood and take in the haunted beauty. Just thought I'd share one of my favorite, lesser known spots.
