Easiest car rental of my ENTIRE LIFE!!! Traveling to remote areas can be a challenge and my normal car rental chain is not available here. Booked a car through their website but was unable to travel due to the weather (sea plane had poor visibility and had to come a day LATER). Most car rental places would have charged me anyway but they were understanding and moved my reservation to the next day, When I arrived they sent me a text asking if I made my flight and to let them know when I land. I landed and sent the text. BEFORE MY SUITCASE was ready for pick up he was at the airport with my car! No paperwork to sign! We came back to Skagway on a cruise and wanted to rent a car and drive to Emerald Lake in the Yukon (Just off the Klondike Hwy). We decided to rent our car from Affordable Car Rental in Skagway. This is not a Car Rental Chain. This is a local small business company. It was very easy to get to - Basically about a 10 minute walk from the dock from the cruise ship if you are on NCL or Holland America. Maybe about a 15 - 20 min walk if you are on Princess or Royal Caribbean (their dock position is a little farther down the pier) Anyway, easy to set up through their website and if you have questions you can email or call if needed. It was pretty straightforward and you can either enter a code to open lockbox on car (they will send you the code) or go inside and say hello to Nils. He texted me the day before with instructions to make sure I had what I needed. They actually included a small Nylon Ice Chest in the car with a reusable frozen block of ice to keep our food and drinks cold. Where you pick up the car is also the gas station they own - so that is helpful to make sure you refill the car before your return. Nils also offer sandwiches w/ Chips for an extra charge (reasonable for sure) since there are not really any places to stop for food and drinks before you get to the Yukon and Emerald Lake. The rental also included 200 miles which was plenty for our visit to Skagway. The cars are not brand new but all the cars I saw were in good shape. Our car was fine. It was a Ford Escape that could easily fit 4 adults or 5 but I don't want that middle seat on a 3 - 5 hour drive. It was approx 3 hours (Round Trip to Emerald Lake) If you want to support a local business and need a car rental - check out Affordable Car Rental and stop in and meet Nils. Great rental experience. We rented a car to drive up to Emerald Lake. Picked it up at their office & was given a binder containing mile-by-mile sights along the way. Car was a 2024 RAV4 Hybrid in perfect condition. I had never driven one & the ride was fantastic. We'd had to cancel a reservation the previous week when my back flared up & they did so with no problem. So glad we were able to do the trip the following week. Deposit was refunded within an hour of returning the car. I would not hesitate to rent from here again. Great staff ~ read more

Worst car ever from a rental company. It's a 12 minute walk from the port to a gas station. Car suppose to have our name on it but none have it so needed to speak with the owner ) our car was probably given away to someone else). Rented a car but instead got an old, beat up small suv with cracked windshield. Car was extremely dirty and has "Maintenance Light" on. Most expensive 1day tents and the worst car, better off renting from Turo. 1 star is for the nice guy who work there. read more

When we came to pick up our car, they gave us a very old car, with over 150,000 miles and a cracked windshield and the air conditioner barely even worked! We didn't complain because we only drive less than 7 hours to explore the skyway from cruise ship. They required us to refill the tank fully and yes, we did fill it up at a nearby. They never told us to refill the gas at their own gas station. We rented a lot of different car from different companies and no company asked us have to refill gas as their station, so we think as long as we refill the full gas, it will be ok. However ,when we returned the car, an old man, pretty sure he runs the place, yelled at us and insulted us, You refill the cheap gas. You are cheap!" "You brought cheap gas into my car!" and many others, first of all he never told us anything about buying his gas and second, the gas we brought was the same price! I have never experience such behavior and attitude when picking and giving back a car. I suggest to never ever go to this car rental " family business " again, they will try to get money off of you. read more

We just got back from a cruise where we visited Skagway and rented a car for the day from Affordable Car Rental. It was FANTASTIC! We booked it via a phone call with Nils and he arranged everything. The car was waiting for us as we got off the ship at the pier and we were free to return it to the same spot. Doesn't get much easier than that or more affordable. We headed first to Bites on Broadway, this is where we met Nils to say hello and grabbed coffee and a pastry before heading off on our adventure. Started driving the Klondike Hwy and headed towards Emerald Lake - scenery was breathtaking and having your own car to stop and take pictures when/where you wanted was spectacular. Highly recommend using Affordable Car Rental if you have a day in Skagway, Alaska. Beats any excursion the ship can offer. read more

I booked a car for the day, with Affordable Car Rental, since one of the cruise ship stops was in Skagway. Nils delivered the car (Nissan Altima) at the dock and we were able to explore Skagway on our own. We encountered beautiful vistas, a gold miners cemetery, and an amazing waterfall just a short, easy hike from the cemetery. I even booked us for the wrong day, and Nils accommodated us without hassle or extra charges. For those on a future cruise with a stop in Skagway, this may be a great option for you. While doing some research for my family's upcoming cruise to Alaska, I read many posts from other people who mentioned renting a car in Skagway to see the beautiful Alaskan landscape. I looked at several different ways to rent a car in Skagway: jeep rental, Avis, Turo etc. Ultimately, I chose Affordable Car Rental, and boy was I glad I did! I opted to have my car ready for me at the port, and it was so easy to just walk off the cruise ship and hop right into the car. If you have little kids or aging parents with you like we did, this was really the way to go. When we completed our trip, we just returned our car to the same place, locked it up, and got back on the ship. Because we rented a car instead of booking a shore excursion, we were able to see and do so much more in that one day. It was truly the highlight of our trip to Alaska. Nils was super easy to work with, and I would highly recommend Affordable Car Rental when in Skagway. read more

Website states $20 fee to leave car at cruise dock, I opted to just walk to the rental place because I had been to Skagway before and knew it was a very short walk and not worth extra $20. Then the rental company leaves the car at the dock anyway. Then once we get to the car the windshield wiper was being held on by zip tie. Then the wrong car seat was in the car and we had to call to switch out. They did not know how to put in the car seat so we put it in and then volunteered to put a car seat in another rental for them! Then we finally get on our way and the brakes on the car were completely wore out. They were squealing just going down the road and then when pressed they sounded awful. Returned the car and text the rental company to let them know about the brakes and got no response. Then I get email next day that I was charged an additional $25 because I went over 200 miles when there is nowhere on their website nor any emails sent after reserving of this. These are out dated cars and not well mechanically maintained. Even the car seats were outdated. Remember, when things are cheaper there is a reason. So be warned if using this rental company. When I return to Skagway I will not be using this rental company again and do not recommend. read more
