While visiting from a cruise ship we stopped in here and had a drink and an appetizer just to check out the place. From the old bar to the hardwood flooring to the costumes you feel like you took a step back in time. They do tours of the upstairs for 20$ a person which we opted not to do. The beers were cold and had good flavor very similar to the other ones we tried while in town at other establishments The salmon dip was pretty good however I would like to have had a bit more of a salmon flavor and less of a salty flavor overall, not a bad experience not sure if I would take the time to go back especially because it's very crowded and the tables are very cramped so even just being two of us you don't have a lot of room so if you have a big group, I would definitely skip this stop read more

Their cauliflower crust is pretty tasty and it's a nice treat. Came in early morning today 10:15am because with 4 cruise ships in port the wait would be longer later in the day. We were seated immediately, I love their Miner's Morning Martini basically an Espresso martini. The bartender's do a great job and don't skimp on the booze. Usually follow up with the Reindeer Fart Shot as those are quite tasty too but as I hadn't had any breakfast I was feeling the drink. A group of us stopped into Red Onion Saloon to inquire about a walking tour. We decided against booking a tour but did enjoy one beer in the historical establishment. I purchased a V-Neck T-shirt from the gift shop for $26.65. Discover is an accepted form of payment with a 2.5% service charge applied to the transaction. Service was great! They are very Efficient so the wait was not bad. You must try the spruce tip ale, it's loaded w vitamin C. The place is decorated like your back in the 1800s. They also do a brothal tour every hour on the half hour upstairs. Unfortunately it is not ADA compliant so I want able to go due to my mother using a rolling walker. It's the oldest bar in Skagway! Historic bar and restaurant located in downtown Skagway. On the first floor is the bar and restaurant. On the second floor is the brothel museum. It is $20 for a tour which is every half hour. When it is time for the tour, a woman dressed as a brothel worker, will stand on the stairs and make an announcement with a funny little two minute comedy routine. We went on a Tuesday during the summer while all the cruise ships were docked, and it was very busy. We managed to squeeze our way into two chairs at the bar after a five minute wait. The bartender was super friendly. My spouse still talks about his huge regret because he did not order a pizza. He could not get over how good it smelled, but we had just had lunch nearby. We stopped by the Red Onion Saloon during our cruise stop in Skagway and here's the deal: the food was decent (we ordered pizza and the brisket quesadilla)--nothing I'd write home about, but it hit the spot after a long morning of exploring this little town. The real story here, though, is that we made a classic rookie mistake... and brought our kids into what is very clearly, unapologetically, and proudly a former brothel. Now look--I've read and/or written enough Yelp reviews to know when to use context clues, and yet somehow "Red Onion Saloon & Brothel Museum" didn't trigger a red flag in my head that maybe, just maybe, there might be 100-year-old nudie portraits casually decorating the walls. And yes--there were. Lots of them. Full frontal, side pose, Victorian sultry-stare... the whole art-historical buffet. We sat down for lunch while a portrait of someone's great-great-grandmadam stared down at us. To our kids' credit (or maybe ours?), they didn't seem to notice. My wife and I kept our poker faces strong and just silently agreed to pretend we were at Chili's or something. No comments, no eye contact, just vibes. And surprisingly we weren't the only ones who brought young kids in. (Thank God we weren't the only ones making questionable parenting choices.) Anyway, the service was friendly and the drinks were cold. All the hostesses and waitresses were dressed in old-school madam getups, corsets and all, with literal wads of dollar bills tucked straight into their cleavage--as if they were one high-kick away from launching into a can-can. It was theatrical, campy, and honestly kind of iconic. But also... I had my seven and six-year-olds with me, so let's just say the vibes were chaotic neutral. And I've gotta give props to any establishment where the pizza comes with a side of Gold Rush-era adult content. Just... maybe scope it out before bringing the whole fam next time. Would I come back? We came here as part of our cruise excursion. We were given a glass of champagne and a tour of the brothel museum. You enter the back door of the Saloon. There were a few steps to get in so some people passed. The waiting area aka the parlor was well decorated. It felt like you entered a brothel. The brothel museum was upstairs. The gal leading the tour was dressed up in clothing of that day and gave us her spill downstairs where there was more room. Another gal also dressed up served us champagne. I read that you could get beer instead, but that didn't seem to be the case. They put out the champagne in flutes out on a table for you. There was one tiny table and 2 chairs to sit in while we waited. There was about 19 of us in the tour. Some people opted out of the tour as the museum was up a steep and narrow staircase. The museum was small and there was a crowd so you had to keep moving as you viewed the items. It appeared that they allowed pictures. It was interesting. I wouldn't pay $20 to see the museum as it was so small and not much to see, but being part of a larger excursion it was nice to get that glass of champagne and walk through it. We had just enough time to view everything in 15 minutes, drink or champagne and get back on the bus for a ride back to our ship. The tour exits through the front stairs into their gift shop. They sold long sleeve t-shirts, but they didn't have my husband's size and other gifty items. Seating in the saloon wasn't open you had to wait to be seated. Red onion is a blast from the past in Skagway! An old saloon and bordello, the current owners have respected the traditions and memories of the place. It's a great little saloon with terrific food. On the tourist season, it's almost always packed. The highlights are the cool bar staff and the cat house museum. Museum staff flirt with the inappropriate jokes now and then, but this is a cool tour that honors the women of the early Klondike. read more

When in Skagway, you must include this historic landmark into your day. We didn't do much research prior to this cruise, and ended up stumbling onto it when looking up cool places to see while it was raining. Here's a quote from their website briefly describing its rich history "Built in 1897 during the height of the Gold Rush, the Red Onion Saloon operated as one of the finest Bordellos in town, and while the times have changed, the spirit has not." I absolutely agree with that statement, it's like walking into the Gold Rush era! While chatting with the bartender, I asked if any of the woodwork was still original. To my surprise, MOST of it still was except for a few things that could not be fully restored. Over 80% of the wood used to build the bar area was original from 1897, carefully maintained and restored, and still looking fantastic for over 125 years with heavy daily use. Drink selection was great, prices reasonable, and service friendly and fast despite the place being fully packed. I'm so glad we didn't miss out on this gem! read more

We were here on vacation and learned of this famous spot so we wanted to try it out. It was a old brothel so the teeming and history is awesome in this place as they have it set up like it was originally. We sat down to eat after about a hour wait because the inside is so small and there were so many ships that came into port. Unfortunately we weren't able to have any wraps or sandwiches because we were told that their freezers broke so we stuck to pizzas and a quesadilla. I got the pulled pork quesadilla and I couldn't believe how great it was. Big portion and definitely top of the lists of ones I've had. We were with friends so we got 3 pies and they were honestly some of the best pizza also, which I couldn't believe from a old saloon. The pies were big and loaded with ingredients. They cooked them perfectly. We got some of their specialty drinks that were very good also. I definitely recommend this place if your in town for the day for either drinks or food. read more

We visited here while on an Alaskan Cruise. A fun place to tour. We were greeted with an old fashioned black and red garter. Then to the bar for a drink and pastries. The building has seen many uses but has been converted back into the bar and upstairs brothel. The downstairs bar has bedpans covering the upper wall. The tour of the upstairs brothel museum is fun, historical, and a great look at the Alaskan gold rush. Some friends and I attempted to go here but it was quite busy with no given wait time when asked. We ended up leaving and right behind it is a little patio area. They had a single stand for drinks and some soups. I got a cup of their Crab Bisque $10.50 which was quite good on the cool day. It had noticeable chunks of crab in it and was creamy smooth. Went on the Ghosts and Good Time Girls Walking Tour during my Alaska cruise hosted by the Red Onion Saloon and "Madame Pennymore" - would highly recommend! Our madame walked us around downtown and told us about the sordid history of Skagway - I really had no idea about the harsh conditions women faced. Our guide seemed to be really passionate about women's rights and it was a great little history lesson. The tour then ended on the top floor of the saloon where we had a champagne toast and got to see the brothel that was for the most part, pretty accurately preserved. They even had some original knob and tube wiring that was still functioning! You don't see that every day... Highly recommend that if you are in Skagway, you stop in for a tour or a drink. read more

It was a must come because this is THEE place in Skagway- they have $20 brothel tours which I didn't do but I did sit at the bar and had a Reindeer Fart shot. They know people come in for the name so the prices are a little higher. The service was average to poor as the bartender was just not the friendliest lady knowing it was a port day for cruisers. Rise & Shine cruise excursion. Upon arrival, the madams from the Red Onion Saloon hopped on our bus for a warm welcome. Walking in, the madams place a garter on your arm as a souvenir. The morning drinks and pastries were set up for us at the bar. The drink selection included bloody marys, mimosas, and Irish cream coffee. The tour continued to the second floor where the brothel rooms and memorabilia were located. Amazing to see some of the original decor from over a 100 years ago.
