I want to thank Dr Cauley, Dr Matthews and above all, Summer for the wonderful care of my eighty eight year old mother.

Everyone I dealt with was incredibly nice, and I appreciated the thorough cleaning and exam, as…read morewell as the detailed explanations of any issues they spotted. However, I have some serious concerns about this practice otherwise. In addition to experiencing multiple botched procedures (a filling that resulted in permanent sensitivity, a veneer replacement that was prepped for the wrong tooth the first time around, followed by a finished product I only later realized was a replica of...the wrong tooth, and a questionable experience with a bite guard fitting)--my greatest concern is that I believe the practice positioned elective and/or wholly unnecessary procedures as critical to my health as a means to make money. In fact, I am deeply suspicious that they may have drilled one or more of my healthy teeth --which is a disturbing thought under any circumstance, and even more so given one of the fillings resulted in permanent sensitivity on a tooth with no issues before the procedure was done. What on earth would lead me to believe this? For starters, there was a pretty startling difference between the exam I had with my previous dentist--who gave me a glowing review of my teeth--and my first exam with Peninsula, where I was stunned to learn I had developed FIVE cavities in the roughly 12-18 months between the two appointments, which was more than all the cavities I had in the prior 30-odd years combined. That said, I knew I was overdue for a dental appointment, and I had been less compliant with daily flossing after having recently had a child, so despite my surprise, I didn't think too long about it. After the poor report and an impassioned pitch from the hygienist about my need for orthodontics if I hoped to maintain my dental health and facial structure (all news to me), I was sent home with a prescription toothpaste and a follow-up appt for fillings and a bite guard fitting, which went more or less as expected. At the three-month follow-up, imagine my surprise when, after using my prescription toothpaste and loyally brushing and flossing, I was told I had a new cavity since the last appt, and that there were several other spots they were watching closely. Again, I was scheduled for another three months out for a filling and cleaning, and in between, I also saw them for a less-than-ideal veneer replacement. When I was told YET again that I had a new cavity at that next appointment, I expressed my utter shock and dismay about my deteriorating dental health, despite following cleaning guidance to a tee, and never having had any such issues before. The hygienist suggested maybe the bacteria or amount of saliva in my mouth changed on account of the medication I was taking, or due to hormone fluctuations, and the dentist attributed it to the deep grooves of my teeth--which didn't exactly put my mind at ease, despite sounding feasible enough. At the time, I had an appointment scheduled for the braces they strongly encouraged me to get. But after the botched veneer, the sensitive filling, and the seemingly inexplicable spate of cavities that continued to develop between each appt, I felt increasingly uncomfortable with and suspicious about the entire situation, and I never returned. It took me a really, really, really long time to make an appt with a new dentist after my experience with Peninsula, and I was nervous about what he would find given how overdue I was for an exam, and how awful my reports had been at Peninsula. I finally got back in the chair again today, and was relieved to receive another glowing report and lots of compliments about my teeth and the care I take of them. Interestingly, neither the hygienist or the dentist saw any indication of cavities or any "areas of decay" that Peninsula was monitoring, nor did either make any suggestion about my need for orthodontics, despite the practice offering the service. After a very thorough exam, cleaning, and fluoride treamtment--during which I received numerous compliments about my teeth--they stressed the importance of me wearing the bite guard I already own, and told me to come again in 6 months for a regular cleaning. I am happy to find a dentist I trust in the area. But I left feeling more dubious than ever about my experience with Peninsula, which I gave two stars on account of the friendly staff and nice office. Given I have no solid proof of malfeasance, I will leave a sliver of room for the notion that I found Peninsula during a moment of rare and acute dental dysfunction, and the the massive amount of dental work they completed or recommended was on the up and up. But it strikes me as unlikely.

Front desk is amazing, answered all my questions and explained my coverage vs out of pocket expenses. The office is clean and comfortable. The Team does fantastic work - as I had a cleaning, had to get a crown put in and got a night guard scan, they explained each procedure and made sure I was comfortable along the way.

Steer clear! If "0"…read morewas an option on the rating scale, Smile Generation's Dentists of West Ashley would receive a "0"! My husband and I were each treated rudely and aggressively by a member of the staff on 2 separate occasions. When I complained to the parent company, Smile Generation, I was ignored by 4 different representatives. In our opinion and personal experience, this company has no interest in or regard for its patients. Dentists of West Ashley is a relatively new office. My husband and I both received the introductory $59 cleaning and X-rays. The staff was pleasant and friendly. Its original dentist was wonderful and extremely knowledgeable. When I needed a crown after my filling fell out, he provided it skillfully. As a result, my husband scheduled his next cleaning. When we arrived, the office manager told him the cleaning technician was ill, and that she had called and texted my husband several times early that morning to inform him. He looked at his phone - there were no calls or texts from the practice or her. She argued with him. She asked that he reschedule. We have no car, and had taken the bus to the office, so we were expected to turn around and get back on the bus to go home. In addition, the weather was terrible that day. We weren't happy. Our original dentist had already been transferred out of the practice so the new dentist volunteered to provide the cleaning since we were already at the office. My husband was very unhappy with the cleaning, so unhappy that he scheduled a cleaning with a different practice soon after. We understand the new dentist who provided this inadequate cleaning has already been released. After the cleaning, the office manager told my husband he would be required to pay the full amount. He balked. Not only was he never informed that the tech was unavailable, he was stuck with a bad cleaning. In addition, she presented the charges as soon as he walked in, which included full X-rays - he already had them in the $59 special! She also expected him to pay for the dentist consult. She finally adjusted the charges, deducting the X-ray charges and the consult fee, and reducing the cleaning fee. Dealing with her was not pleasant - my husband uses harsher words! Days later, when he received an online survey about the service, he gave a bad review of the below-par cleaning, the office manager's attitude and the fact that he received no prior notice that the tech was unavailable and, therefore, had no opportunity to reschedule. Moving now to my own unfortunate interaction with the office manager . . . After my husband's awful experience, we decided not to use Dentists of West Ashley again. We ran into the cleaning technician who told us that the new dentist was already gone, replaced by yet another dentist who he felt was really well qualified. The office manager was still at the practice. I recently had a root canal and now need a crown. Crowns are expensive so I obtained quotes from several practices. My original crown at Dentists of West Ashley had cost less than the quotes I just received, so I called the cleaning tech for an office update. He said the office manager was still employed, and that she was the only person who could provide a quote. I called Dentists of West Ashley for a quote. I did not identify myself. I just wanted the price to compare. Big mistake. I asked the office manager for a quote. She put me on hold. When she came back, she informed me we needed to talk about 'the last experience'. She brought it up. She proceeded to justify her behavior on the day of my husband's cleaning. I was in the room during their conversations so I stopped her to remind her what actually happened that day. Our discussion became heated. She referred to the bad review. I told her I wanted to speak with the doctor for a quote. She said the doctor does not give quotes. She never gave me a quote, and finally threatened me by telling me our call had been recorded. I said, "GOOD!" I called the parent company, Smile Generation. I called 4 times and spoke to 4 different reps about the clash I had with the office manager. I asked for a callback from a supervisor each time. I received no response to any of my calls. The last rep told me the number I called was the billing department, so I asked her to file a complaint about the office manager. I also told her, if I did not receive a callback in 5 days, I would write a review. The 5 days have passed. No callback. And obviously no interest at all in speaking to me about an office manager who just cost them over $1,000, as well the future business of two former patients. Has this office manager been contacted by the parent company? Has management spoken to her about her behavior in attacking me over her past behavior? Not only does staff change often at Smile Generation/Dentists of West Ashley, but, in our experience, the company does not regard the patients it serves. Steer clear!
