I have been taking my dog to this clinic for 10 years and while their preventive healthcare provision is fine, do not think that they will see your pet if they are acutely ill-during business hours. This has happened 3 times now with my dog. I think it is neglectful to not treat your patient when they are ill. You know my dog and should have some compassion and concern to care for them when they are ill vs referring out to urgent care or asking them to wait 5 days to be seen. Try blocking out some time for sick visits in your scheduling. read more

Well after many many years of my multiple pets being patients of Affton Vet I have decided this is the last straw. I use Chewy for my prescriptions because it's not even close when it comes to cost. When I began using Chewy I could tell the staff turned their noses up to me and tried every tactic to get me to buy their ridiculously over priced medication. I held firm and politely asked for a written prescription because they flat out refused to be contacted by said third party service. Now they want to charge me to write out every prescription???? $7 a piece. Nope I will find somewhere else immediately. She was so aggressive and challenging, but for 10 years this vet clinic never said an unkind word, never reacted differently to her and treated her with kindness and compassion, no matter what her behavior was like, she left us this week and we know that we got those 10 years because of this clinic. This is a great place to take your pet for veterinary care! I have two dogs (a new puppy and an older dog) and Affton Vet Clinic caters to all of their needs. As soon as you walk in the door, the staff seem happy to see you and are friendly and welcoming! Each visit, they check me in and after only a few minutes of waiting they escort me and my pup into the exam room. The vet tech spends some time with you to weigh your pet and discuss any concerns or questions that you might have. Dr. Brooks then comes into the room. She is very friendly and thorough. Dr. Brooks spends time listening and answering any questions. I never feel rushed. Qualities I look for in a vet clinic are: friendly, empathetic, knowledgeable staff, ease in scheduling appointments and attentive to any questions or concerns you have about your pet. We found Affton Vet about a year ago when we were unhappy with our current vet and looking for a change. Just so happens Dr. Brooks and Dr. Frei are both amazing at what they do and we love them! Every visit we've had nothing but great things to say about them. The front desk staff is consistent, friendly, and ever helpful when I call in or come in. This alone is refreshing compared to several vets we've seen. We never have a long wait. They are understanding of my helicopter mom attitude with my pets. They also seem to put my pets at ease. More recently, Dr. Brooks discovered a heart issue with one or our pups. We ended up needing to take him to Mizzou emergency. After a late night emergency visit, I was overwhelmed and confused about his prognosis. When I called to ask Dr. Brooks to help me understand, she took the time to explain their findings so I could easier understand what is going on with him. Another time, one of our pets had a procedure by Dr. Brooks to remove mast cell tumors. Our dog was less than pleased and removed all her staples. When I frantically called in a panic, they were able to reassure me and took care of it promptly. She also had some issues with not wanting to wear the cone (which was a must given the eaten staples). They told me to come up and they helped me secure the inflatable donut we had for her. My cat was very sick and I was fearful he would need to be put down since he had stopped eating and peeing. Dr. Fri was able to manually dislodge a blockage which saved his life. We started bringing our dogs here a couple years ago. Dr. Brooks is amazing and always takes great care of my lab, Chloe, and diabetic poodle, Sassy. She obviously cares about her patients. And getting an appointment is always quick! You know they care: One day, our 16-year-old Bichon, Macie, started acting like she didn't feel good. So the first day we just babied her and cuddled her thinking she would get over it within a day or two. On day two, she started vomiting and was having trouble walking; she wouldn't eat or drink. So we called and Dr. Brooks was able to see her immediately. They did blood work and found her to be anemic and dehydrated. They did an x-ray and gave her fluids. They found a mass in her abdomen, but it wasn't something that could be treatable. They didn't think she was going to make it through the night, but I didn't want to give up on her, so we brought her home. Within hours she was deteriorating, she was incontinent, stooling blood, vomiting, and her gums were white (instead of pink). She was bleeding internally. We rushed her to pet emergency room where she passed away. The entire day, after we took Macie home, Dr. Brooks and her team were available to us over the phone for advice. They were also available for the doctors at the pet ER to discuss Macie's care. And the next day, they called my mom and gave their condolences to her and my family. I did not have a good experience at this veterinary clinic and would not recommend it to others. I am new to the area and passed by the office a few times while taking my dog to the local park. Since her shots were coming due, I figured I would stop in there and see if this could be our new home vet. I went in and told the front desk assistant that I was new to the area and wanted to bring my dog in for kind of a welcome visit, yearly exam/shots appointment. I wasn't met with a very good first impression but did set up an appointment for the following day. She asked if there was anything else going on with the dog and I said you know she has been acting a little off this week. She told me to bring a stool sample and I said alright. When I got to the office in the morning, I was met with no greeting. I just sat down with the dog until they asked if that was Mamba. When we got back to the office, the assistant copied my records and asked me about her acting a little off. I gave her a detailed story of the happenings over the last week. Nothing really crazy, just wasn't as excited to eat and eating at later times during the day. I mentioned she did throw up once a few days earlier but that was it. I figured she had a bit of a stomach bug but that really wasn't why I was visiting the office. I was there to get a standard exam, make sure she was in good overall health, get her shots, and probably get some flea/tick prevention since she has been itching a ton. Anyway, after a little while, the actual veterinarian comes in and says the stool sample looks fine. Don't know her name because she didn't introduce herself or ask any other questions about the dog. She asked if she had eaten today, which I already explained to the assistant that she had not. The vet pressed on her stomach and based on that told me it would probably be in her best interest to get an x-ray. I am a loving owner so I obliged to paying the $120 to make sure she hadn't swallowed something bad. I waited about 20 minutes and she came back in real quick, said the x-ray showed nothing harmful, I am giving her a shot to ease the stomach and I will send you home with some pills and canned food for her. At this point, I am like uh okay what about the shots and have you noticed fleas, etc. I am basically trying to ask her real quick about the things I originally came to see her for. She said she didn't notice anything but you can have her take some benadryl if you want. Okay, and she's hurrying out of the office as I'm still trying to discuss the dog's issues. Lost cause. To conclude, the assistant comes back in, tells me about the pills and has me come up front. I ask for the receipt to look things over. $250! And I wasn't even able to walk out of there with the shots, flea meds, or the yearly exam. I was charged $43 for that shot that I didn't give consent for and after looking it up, it is a medication for vomiting and car sickness! The dog threw up 1 time 3 days ago. I asked the assistant if I could come back in for the shots without paying the office visit fee (since I just paid all of this but wasn't able to get the shots). She of course said no. Paid my bill and walked out with no intention of coming back. Definitely made the wrong decision on choosing them. read more

I have been bringing my two dogs here for quite a while now, and I am always pleased with the service. The Dr.'s take very good care of them. This office has never attempted to charge me for testing or anything else that isn't needed. I used the HSMO vet clinic for a long time but switched to Affton because they don't keep me waiting 30 mins at every appointment and the prices are more reasonable. This place is very tight and small. I'm used to more open concept establishments but they really do a fantastic job. Took my 9 year Shiba here to get her teeth cleaned and they did quality work. The post cleaning was very informative, they weren't bothered by my questions, and also genuinely care about animals. The vet (i forgot her name because i'm terrible with names) was gentle, very sweet, and knowledgable about cali's breed. I would really like to see them expand or even find a slightly larger location. They really are a great facility. I will be returning for all future vet visits for her and my other dog now. read more

Dr. Brooks is a tremendous and caring veterinarian. My wife and I started taking our boxer, Roxie, to her when we moved back here from Chicago in 2009. When Roxie was not adjusting well to the St. Louis allergy seasons Dr Brooks recommended great and affordable options to determine the severity and cure. We were able help Roxie through her contacts at Mizzou and Roxie is as comfortable as any dog can be in the constantly changing St. Louis allergies! Most recently at an annual check up Dr. Brooks discovered multiple tumors in Roxie's mouth. Not knowing the severity of the tumors we elected to remove them immediately and send them to pathology. Thank God they were all benign! Dr. Brooks was incredible during this frightening time of not knowing the outcome of Roxie's tumors. She was responsive and extremely caring. My wife is currently not working and she helped us get Roxie the right treatment/surgery that was also the most economical. If you are looking for an affordable veterinarian that offers caring and personal service I would highly recommend Dr. Brooks. Hopefully we will be taking Roxie to her for many years to come! Wonderful place. After a terrible experience with another vet's office, I found great Yelp reviews and they were close to my house. I had adopted a rescue dog with anxiety that tended to fear bite. Muzzle definitely required. I explained everything over the phone, and they said "no worries". We were seen promptly, treated with respect even when he bucked and howled during treatment. The vet was very open and honest when discussing treatment options and behavior issues, and the staff was incredibly warm to a nervous new dog owner. Visited this clinic a few days ago because they told me on the phone that they handle small/exotic animals. Turned out, they just want your money! My guinea pig was very sick with a big mass in his belly that has an open area and bleeding, and not eating and drinking as much. All the vet did was just examined him and gave us a number/address to a different vet who specializes on small animals. Really??? I wasted my time and money (paid for physical exam) going to this clinic for you to do nothing for my pet! I could have gone straight to other vets who deals with small animals if your clinic had said so in the first place! PLS. BE HONEST to all your customers.
