I was on vacay looking for dope brunch spots and stumbled across this little gem. This cafe was right up my alley w| their green efforts & hippy vibe. Their customer service is excellent as well. Steak & Eggs had such a nice plating and it was tasty as well. Chicken Karaage & Johnny Cakes was SO good. The cakes are more savory than sweet so it's a nice balance. I've been twice, first time I came solo, sat outside. If you order water, it's self serve which is pretty annoying in a full service restaurant. The water container's lid was riddled with mold, so I had no water with my meal. The food was just ok. Second visit was for an August birthday, we had a party of seven. It was about 1:15pm, they were pretty slow. Their website said walk-in only. Now their website also says "accommodating parties larger than 6 is difficult for us" but what they really mean is "don't bother". As it was summer, it was 102° outside so we said we did not want to sit outside. The host was visibly annoyed. There were two four top tables open placed two inches apart, we suggested we take those. They lost their minds, insisting that was an impossibility as the tables COULD NOT be moved. We assumed that meant they were bolted to the floor and said that was fine, we could manage the gap. They still said no. We stood there for ten minutes watching the host go back and forth to the back. We said if they can't seat us inside, we would just gladly go somewhere else. They finally allowed us to sit at the tables that had been open this whole time. As we sit we notice that the tables are easily able to be moved, strange but whatever. Our server was great, but the food was just straight up bad. To the point where we now jokingly threaten each other with food from Afternoon. I guess we should have taken the hint and went somewhere else, as we will do in the future. I also wish I had checked out their history of being shut down by the health inspector before going along. The food is always delicious here and the service is pretty quick! You do usually have to wait in line, but after ordering the food always comes out pretty quickly. They have some really great options on the menu, it's always hard to make a decision! The whole place is super cute and a wonderful vibe. I brought my mom here because my friend told me about it and I thought she'd love it! The place was crowded but the line wasn't too long. It was our first time there so I was asking a few questions, and unfortunately the girl taking our order at the counter wasn't very helpful. She seemed disinterested and rushed to take our order, which is the only downside about this place. We decided to sit outside because the weather was nice and they have it set up really cute out there. Our food was brought out quickly and it looked beautiful and was delicious! Everything tasted fresh and was, to my surprise, very filling! The menu was a lot smaller than what I was expecting, but they definitely proved that they specialize in what they do have. This is one of my new favorite brunch spots in town. Each time I've visited, the food has been tasty and hearty, with fresh ingredients and a nice presentation. This is also one of the few non-coffee shops where I will order a drink, as many other brunch spots in town only serve regular coffee and not specialty lattes. I only wish they included specials here and there, as I'm getting close to trying everything on the small but mighty menu! On my most recent visit, the mushroom tartine really impressed me. The bread stole the show, with crispy edges and a soft middle, and the local oyster mushrooms were delicious. read more

First impression is very nice, small, and cute place but the smell inside is strange. I prefer to sit outdoors for this restaurant for sure. I also order a coffee and found out you have to add your own sugar and milk to the drink, which I was not a fan of. The coffee itself also did not taste good which was disappointing since I specifically went for a brunch. I will say the food is decent and I would not have high hopes for this place, although many of my friends enjoy the food here. I have been here several times, but my last brunch was disappointing. The sourdough toast was very hard bite to the point that tasted burnt. The potatoes are supposed to be crunchy, but this were also overcooked. It was a busy day, but I would love for this place to have more consistency in their food preparation because it's expensive. I am vegan and as their non- meat options are pretty limited I ordered the daily special (tacos) and asked for potatoes instead of meat, they charged me an extra buck for a "special order" even though they offered this substitution. I also ordered a latte and they asked if I wanted simple syrup. I said yes and they charged me an extra $1.75. Unless you like paying $8 for espresso with warm milk, look elsewhere. read more

This is my first time exploring the food scenes in Gainesville and who would have thought that this place had so much hidden potentials! If you are looking for a nice way to start your morning, then look no further and come to enjoy some delicious breakfast at Afternoon! Hell even if it is smack during 3PM, the real afternoon, I would still eat breakfast at this place. First off, they have free refills on their regular coffee, so that's already off to a good start for me. Second, their pastries are absolutely delicious. You can't really go wrong with any of them. Finally, try their shakshuka! I am by no means a vegetarian, but I absolutely fell in love with this dish. The tomatoes were perfectly spiced with a strong hint of cumin (one of my favorite spices). The eggs were perfectly baked. Dip that toast into some of that nicely melted yolk and top it off with the spiced tomato paste and you will be sent to food heaven. Highly HIGHLY recommend their shakshuka if you are here! Parking is super easy since they have a parking lot right next to the restaurant. I'm new in town from San Francisco, and I was just looking for a simple lunch place where I could eat and loaf a bit while I waited for something else and luckily found 'afternoon'. First off, the vibe of this place is wonderful. I love that the women who operate the restaurant actually spin records for music. I admit that walking in the door and hearing Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot might have juiced the stats a little as it's one of my favorite albums of all time, but they really don't need it: This place is great simply on its own merits. Multiple people had told me to try Afternoon and I finally did one morning for a late breakfast. This place has a hipster vibe to it and I noticed a lot of young people eating both inside and out on their patio area. I ordered an iced coffee and the porchetta sandwich off the specials menu. The iced coffee was about average and the porchetta sandwich had good flavor with a creamy aioli sauce, but I felt like it was piled high with too much arugula. The greenery started to drown out the flavor of the meat. Overall, Afternoon seems to be a popular spot but the menu and the vibe might not be for everyone. read more

Coffee then took 15 more minutes, followed by food another 20 after that. The food and coffee were very good, but the service was completely terrible. It is one thing if the kitchen is backed up and the staff apologizes for the wait, but instead they would constantly say it would come out in the next 5 minutes over and over again but it would never come. We waited over 30 minutes for the food to arrive and when it did it was cold which means it was made and just sat in the kitchen until the waitress decided to bring it over. I just ate here for a birthday brunch and absolutely loved their outside atmosphere. The price was surprisingly cheaper than I expected! The breeze accompanied by the shaded cover was the perfect start to a delicious meal. I would recommend the Dutch Baby and the potato's, they were so uniquely made and together, it's the perfect sweet and savory combo. Hands down my favorite breakfast/brunch spot/coffee in Gainesville. Their breakfast/brunch items are fabulous. I particularly love the dutch baby and the sampler platter (a lox plate). Their coffee is just perfect- plus they roast their own beans and you can buy bags, too! The roastery is actually in the same complex as afternoon. Staff is really welcoming and kind. They really set a relax and chill vibe. The London fog latte was the best one that I have ever had. Perfect balance of everything. The yogurt and egg sandwich were equally as delish and were also visually appealing. The seating gets a little tricky when they are busy...you can't hold a table while someone else orders. The food is so good at Afternoon that we ate here twice during a three-day visit in Gainesville. The eggs were poached absolutely perfectly (the yolk was nice and creamy without being too runny), the crispy potatoes had great texture and were well-seasoned, and the shakshuka was rich and herbaceous. My favorite dish was the poached eggs - the flavors from the brown butter hollandaise, corn cakes, pumpkin, and hazelnuts came together beautifully. The atmosphere is pretty cool, too. It's a modest space that still manages to feel joyful and inviting. Cypress & Grove Brewing is right across the street and opens up around the same time Afternoon is closing down; you could easily spend the whole afternoon hanging out for drinks and eating amazing food without having to leave the block. The taste in music at the restaurant is also excellent and seems to lean towards indie-pop (was very happy to hear albums by Tennis and Woods during both visits). Most importantly, it's clear that the chefs behind the menu are talented and inventive and pride themselves on sourcing local, high-quality ingredients. I look forward to watching how their menu evolves. I would love to see Afternoon's spin on a breakfast burrito with some fresh salsa on the side. Their pastries are great too and made in-house; on busier days when you're feeling extra hungry, it's probably wise to get a baked good when you order to munch on while you wait for your food to arrive. All in all, Afternoon is a great little restaurant with a big personality. I highly recommend popping in for brunch and wish them continued success. read more

We went to afternoon while our bikes were being worked on across the street. The vibe is cute - lots of bright colors and pretty fresh flowers on the table. The menu is fairly simple. Every table has glasses for free water, but you need to ask for it when you order. Both of us were very happy with our food. It was delicious. The onion crema in bowl - wow! The scrambled soft eggs were also pretty perfect. My husband loved his sandwich and particularly enjoyed the homemade bread. The food really makes this place special. That said - I felt the prices were a little too high to be a local here and the food took a long time to come out. I also wished there was a little more variety on the menu. I was in town to visit family and heard some great things about this place so my girlfriend and I had to make a stop. Pulling up we noticed it was absolutely slammed. The workers were kind but their seating system was a little wonky for the amount of traffic. You wait in line and order at the counter and have to tell them if you'd like a table to sit at. Then someone walks around making sure to seat the appropriate people, and multiple times I saw their employees asking people who just walked in and sat down, to get up because it's assigned seating. It might worth their while to install a host stand outside or some signage with instructions. Now for the food. My girlfriend ordered something I believe is called corn and potatoes? It was a collection of veggies, roasted corn, scrambled egg, crispy home fries style potatoes and a delicious sauce on top. This was a home run and really good. We also split a slice of bread with feta, cartelized onions and honey. It was also great though a bit salty, which is expected with feta. Now...the bad...I don't know if this was a one off and I was unlucky but the shakshuka was one of the worst shakshukas I have ever had. I returned it and in return they have me a cookie and a slice of pie with no refund. Not the best trade but I didn't want to press the issue further, I already felt terrible about returning it and they were so busy I felt uncomfortable asking for anything. Let me explain why the shakshuka was less than pleasant. When I received it, I immediately noticed a weird smell. After taking a bite I figured out that it was cumin. Cumin is common in shakshuka but the amount they put in this batch was astronomical and covered any taste or smell of any other ingredient. I took one bite, felt nauseous and mentioned to one of the wandering employees the issue. She was kind and pleasant and checked with the chef who relayed through her that it was a bad batch. Over all, my girlfriend and I felt a little overwhelmed by the atmosphere, pleasantly surprised by the corn and potato dish but underwhelmed by the shakshuka and the entire experience collectively. We're going to give it another try next time we're in town because I think this may be a one off situation and I will give you all an updated review when that happens. Atmosphere -2/5 - Overwhelming when busy, front of house staff is kind but you can tell they're very stressed. Their seating arrangements are also a bit discombobulated and could use signage. A lot of angry customers wandering around. Food 3/5 - corn and potato dish is a go, but the shakshuka is a dud. Service 3/5 - they're trying their best when it's busy but they would benefit from a more formal seating order or just letting people sit as first come first serve. read more

Food is good. Take out was quick especially compared to the Saturday line. My only real criticism is that much of the lettuce and vegetables are half cut through so they're in giant chunks that you have to disassemble yourself. The eggs are a bit on the smaller side too especially for $2 an egg. Otherwise it is a pretty tasty and healthy egg/ veggie breakfast. read more
