This place is a hidden gem. The place is small, and the outdoor seating was a few steps from the parking lot which is the only reason I did 4/5 stars. But, it was INCREDIBLE. They do a 3 course meal and the portions were great for the cost. We started off with the Pea soup and wedge salad, and got free focaccia bread made in house. Then we decided to try the lamb and NY strip - very good, but warning the lamb has some strong marinade. Finally we got the chocolate fudge cake and chocolate coconut cake - rating those 7/10. The fudge was definitely better. The service was fast, friendly, and very personal. We went on Valentine's Day so it was packed, and still had our food order taken and served very quick. Amazing restaurant with scrumptious delicious food in downtown Gainesville. We made a reservation and enjoyed their prix fixed dinner. Started out with English pea soup with creme fraiche which was smooth, fresh and satisfying. The home made bread was fresh from the oven and tasted so. I had the stuffed quail with rye and mushroom bread pudding and apple creme fraiche which was unbelievably beautifully created with attention to detail. All the entree plates were heated and all the dessert lights have been refrigerated to perfection. Service was attentive and appropriate. Then the dessert choices of so many cheese cakes, carrot cake, coconut cake, fudge cake, German chocolate cake and more. Had a decent meal at Mildreds. The charcuterie appetizer was okay. The chicken liver mouse and sausage were delicious but the duck pate was not very good. The potato soup was okay but much you thick and the flavors that were supposed to be there from the smoked paprika oil were barely there. The duck leg was the least crispy duck leg I've ever seen. The flavor wasn't bad but it just wasn't cooked right. The coconut cream pie was also fine but not amazing. All in all I wasn't that impressed but nothing was terrible. Thus 3 stars. read more

I came here for lunch on a Tuesday with some coworkers. I had the tuna club with the tomato eggplant soup. It was good. Others enjoyed a burger, a salad and the specialty quiche. This is such a hidden gem! It definitely does not look like anything special from the outside, let alone a high end restaurant. For around $40 per person, you get a 3-course meal! Everything is excellent, especially for such a low price for a "high-end" restaurant. It is very quiet inside, and there was plenty of seating. I made reservations for my anniversary, but we likely would've been sat as soon as we came in without them. The wait staff was incredible and provided us with champagne for our anniversary. This is the most consistent, fresh, varied, and delicious restaurant in Gainesville. And I mean it. I've had nearly everything on the menu and have not been disappointed. And you have to try their changing daily specials. My joy is trying their soup of the day. Who knew I'd be going to a restaurant looking forward to a soup. A soup! But that's how wonderful this place is--that even the soups are exciting. For lunch you'll order at the counter but for dinner, it turns into white tablecloth with great service to match. Don't leave without trying one of the nearly dozen daily made desserts. I won't recommend any one dish over the other because I've seriously enjoyed all of them. Dear Mildred's, a couple things. Let's start with the good: our server, Sophia (corner table for two), was absolutely perfect. She was efficient, friendly, helpful and charming. The drinks were good, the salad was good, dessert was OK. But the main course? Really mediocre, maybe worse. The vegetables were both over- and under-cooked, cabbage and carrots respectively, and oily without much additional flavor. The worst was the duck breast, which was glutinous, gristly and salty. The wait service looks disheveled unclean unbathed hair n clothing doesn't look as if has not washed since the first day they were put on. I'll start by saying the food was excellent. Everyone enjoyed their selections from the 3 course dinner menu. We had scallops, swordfish, steak, pea soup, wedge salads at our table. Our only complaint was the pea soup could have been warmer. Otherwise the food was imaginative and well prepared. The service was okay, but I had to ask to see the beer menu and the waitress forgot to come back to take my order and I had to flag her down. My main problem with the restaurant is that the decor is drab and dowdy, for the prices you pay for the food (it's one of the more expensive restaurants in town). The place should look better. The silverware was cheap, a sheet of paper for a table cloth, etc. it looked more like a dining room at a senior citizen's center than the dining room of a fancy restaurant. An upgrade of the dining room needs to happen before I would go here again and pay these prices. There is also a confusing 12% service charge for the staff, which leaves you scratching your head as to how much tip to leave. It's a shame because the food was really first rate. read more

The negatives: As a whole, the vibe of Mildred's is almost a dated experience. The atmosphere is very low-key with a hint of boring. Mildred's looks just like when it was established in 1999, still trying to be a fine-dining experience, but feels somewhat vintage old diner. The food: - The dinner is a 3-Course Menu, offering "first," "second," and "third" courses. - Tried the Pâté Basque and the Crab cake for appetizers. Followed by the classic Caesar salad with real anchovies for my second, and my main dish was a forgettable Fried Pork Special. Then I had dessert, and all was forgiven. This is my first time at Mildred's! I feel as though it's underrated. However, let me tell you that the food, the service, and ambiance were great! My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary and we received complementary champagne! We both opted for the 3 course meal which comes with soup or salad options, entree, and a dessert . Apparently they rotate their menu so it's best to always check before going. I had the classic Caesar salad which was great, it had pickled onions and a sardine which was different but good nonetheless. For my entree I had the braised lamb with sweet potato which was delicious! And for dessert I had the chocolate coconut cake which was a great balance between chocolate and coconut. Not pictured my husband had peas soup which he enjoyed and the focaccia bread which is made fresh in house, for his entree he had the seafood dish and for dessert the New York Style cheesecake which was delicious. Also to note all their desserts are made by a baker in house and they rotate as well with some staple items that are always available. Nice place and food. But I just noticed they engage in the deceptive practice of adding obligatory 12% to all checks, even takeout! This is done in the body of the bill, but then the credit card slip has the standard open line for adding a tip. They obviously hope many people won't notice 12% has already been added, and I'm sure many people don't. So the restaurant gets a nice bonanza of 30% in total service charge. This is a somewhat sleazy practice. I ordered 3 takeout dinners and paid $18 in service charge! read more

Mildred's offers a fixed price dinner menu for $43. It includes appetizer, entree and desert. I didn't want an appetizer or desert and so paid more for just the entree! My NY Strip was nearly inedible due to toughness and gristle. The little tiny mash potatoes were the best part of my meal. I had a coke while my guest had one very ordinary glass of wine. The bill came to an astounding $250 which included a nonsensical 12% service fee plus tip. Gainesville is a small university town and $250 would feed a family of four for two weeks. $250 for three puts it at the top of expensive restaurants in town. The waitress gave us a piece of paper with a $46 price fixed menu with just a few items to choose from. We both chose the Caesar salad and chicken . Wow, this place is awesome! Can't believe it took me so many years after leaving Gainesville to finally come back and try the food here. This place may serve simple food, but they execute it so well! I decided to try their Tuna Club sandwich when I went this time. At first, I expected it to maybe be a normal tuna sandwich with some pieces of lettuce and bacon. But I was pleasantly surprised that the tuna was actually seared tuna! They did a wonderful job of getting a good crust on the outside of the tuna but still maintaining that perfect raw cool center. The lemon aioli that they use provides the perfect citrus zing and punch to the sandwich. There's also fantastic texture from the mixed lettuce greens and crispy bacon strips. Finally, they also load up on the fries. The fries are nice and crisp on the outside, and I love how they maintain their texture even when it was in a to go container. Unfortunately the snooty hostess put a bad taste in our mouths as soon as we walked in! She was rude and condescending and made it very clear she'd rather we eat elsewhere We came very close to walking out. We probably should have. The food was ok. There were some hits, like the carrot soup, and the rest was mediocre at best. The two stars are for the total experience, as the man behind the bar seemed to be carrying the whole restaurant and he was kind and professional but had too much on his hands and it took quite a while for each course of our meal, which is fine when you're seated comfortably, but we were not. We had been banished to the bar by snooty hostess. While seated at the bar, we had a vantage point to observe all the other waitstaff cutting their own fruit for drinks, never washing their hands before doing so. I grew up in Italy and have dined in fine restaurants through out my life and this restaurant will not disappoint you!!! Every plate from children menu to desserts were all 1st quality! The bread they serve is a home made lightly salted Focaccia bread that matches the best Focaccia I've eaten in Italy! Don't hesitate eating here.
