This is such a special market, and I feel very lucky to have it so close to where I live. The prices may be a bit higher, but so is the quality. Products I keep buying on repeat are: spicy salsa with their yellow corn tortilla chips, their pizza dough, their shredded cheeses are fantastic, their fresh pasta and fresh vodka sauce, I like to add pearl mozzarella to that pasta dish. Add a sprinkle of Maldon Salt, and MmmmMMmMmMmmmm The desserts are so good!!! They also carry seriously good caramels, sold individually by checkout or in boxes in the fresh cookie isle. I always buy them for my Mom because she fell in love with them. They sell beautiful breads, pre-cut fruit, that comes with a little fork so you can feel like a diva while you eat it. I got to this Agata & Valentina a lot because I live in the neighborhood. It's nice to pop in from time to time in a pinch - as I did tonight when I was trying to have taco night but missing some ingredients. Unfortunately, the two cashier Racially PROFILED me and made and ruined my appetite. The the man I'm assuming was the general manager (I've never seen him before) who told me he was "half Jamaican" when I asked if he was following me around the store, and the young women behind the cashier who followed up and said she was African. you both were irresponsible, cruel, and WRONG. DONT EVER - put your body in front of a customer who you have profiled and believe to be stealing when THEY ARE NOT. and for as victim of racial profiling - I don't care with your jamician, African, or white - stop it. Today on Chicken Wars, we have Agata & Valentina on the Upper East Side. A whole Asian seasoned bird ran $10.99, which gave my pockets a much needed break after the $26 chicken from Ouri's. This is the 29th grocery store tissi I've consumed in the past 2 months, so my palate is dialed in. I took it to this beautiful park on the upper east side that I didn't know existed. There are so many nooks and crannies of this city that I have yet to explore. It boggles my mind how much inspiration is in New York just waiting to be discovered. I sat there, fighting off those vicious little birds as I started consumption. This chicken just didn't do what I wanted it to do. It was pretty decent all around, but had no attributes that really made it stand out. Love this neighborhood food market! Great produce, bakery, cheese department, my source for olives, capers & such. Prices are fair for quality. The shelf stable items they stock are small in number but good choices and I usually find everything I need. A little intimidating cutting the long line to get to self check out but no room for two lines. Try to go off peak, it's NYC tight moving through store but line goes fast so most people let the helpful cashiers check them out. read more

My wheat allergy, which had been dormant for DECADES, returned a few years ago. Ugh. On the plus side, there are MANY gluten-free options that were not available when I was little. My father used to make pasta for me, because there was no option available in stores! And the ONLY bread that I could have was from a health food store. It wasn't great. But now there is an ENTIRE gluten-free gourmet store, just a few blocks from my mother's apartment! There's PIZZA! Sandwiches! Wraps! Cookies! Crackers! Just about anything you could want. I have been getting my plane sandwiches here. They're premade, which is convenient, and also somewhat expensive, but that's sadly to be expected. I usually get the turkey sandwich, but there's a lot of bread, and it isn't toasted, so it falls apart. Still yummy, if messy. This time, I got an Italian tuna wrap and chicken salad wrap. These are SMALL. And $12 each. Ah well. It was real tuna, in oil, and the wrap was soggy and fell apart. Luckily, I had asked for a knife, fork, and spoon. That was lunch before my flight. I had the chicken salad wrap on the plane. Did not fall apart, but the chicken fell out. Wrap was not well wrapped. Good thing that I had a fork. It was very good, as was the tuna. The lemon curd was a generous size and only $7. Yum! Service is always friendly and helpful. They don't have packages of mayonnaise, but will give you a little cup if you ask. Agata & Valentina was in NY before many other gourmet markets, other than the fabulous Zabar's markets. If you're on the Upper East Side, closer to the East River, you've no longer got the beloved Eli's Vinegar Factory to shop at. It's mainly Agata & Valentina on 79th and 1st Ave. There is also Gristede's and D'Agostino's, for more every day items as well as gourmet fare, unless you are a Whole Foods Shopper (3rd and 88th). But the first two grocers offer more mainstream selections. Agata & Valentina has a real family component for local residents, but also has the transient dynamic being on a main avenue (1st). I love splurging on their cheeses, gourmet snacks, prepared foods and bakery treats. I would like to go back to try their homemade pizzas and pastas. Just driving down 1st Avenue, and by it, I smile. It's definitely a highlight for me. They serve coffees and breakfast cafe food before 11:30am. And even though it advertises as an Italian/Sicilian market, I always thought of it as a very broad Mediterranean selection. Wow what a place. High end for sure, but they have all the specialty items. From different fresh pastas to pastries to cheeses, plus all the normal produce and pantry selections. The smells alone in this store are enough to entice you to empty your wallet. I have to say their chicken counter looked a little less fresh than I wanted, but their pre-packaged chicken items were great looking with lots of cuts to choose from. But to have a store I could go into and know w confidence everything is GF (so that o only worry about the carbs) is a gift. I loved Agata & Valentina in the past (while living in NYC), but the last time I came here (in 2022), I saw some cracks in the operation and areas for improvement. The layout of the store was basically the same. To be honest, the produce section was just OK, the seafood department seemed to be subpar compared to past experiences, and my hopes to buy all the ingredients for a family dinner here were dashed. I love the herbs and spices section. And if A&G is still making vanilla ice cream, that is a real treat! It's still a good store, but it's a shame I came all the way to the Upper East Side when I could have more easily trekked to the Upper West Side. Beware ! beware ! beware! And count your change! Always a problem in this store. You can go to three registers with the same item and each one can register a different price Newest problem is one day into the cancellation of pennies. They are already not returning them to you if they owe it to you. You cannot get out of the store if you owe them a penny. Tall African-American woman who seems to be the front end manager thinks that most of the customers are stupid or don't care. They owed me a penny. I expected to get it. She told me, as though she thought I just fell off a turnip truck, they don't make pennies anymore! I said I knew that, but there are millions still in circulation and they are all good currency. In this store in particular you must watch everything. It could also use a major cleaning top to bottom. read more

I went to the Agata & Valentina gluten free store on the north side of 79th & they were selling expired organic ham snack packs (today's date is July 9 & the expiration date was June 30!) You have found something really delicious but not widely available, but lo and behold ! it is quite available on Agata and Valentina's web site, and while it is not far from you, you certainly don't want to make a trip there for nothing. So you call and no one picks up. You wait a while and call in the late afternoon since the store will still be open for hours. After the third attempt -- your time is not so valuable, it would appear -- someone picks up, and she switches you to another department but ... no one picks up from that department. You wait a bit and call back, you are told they don't carry "pea shoots" which is not what you said, "you said "peach," but the phone connection is terrible. You call one last time, and ask for the manager. No manager picks up. I have been to this store..when I was nearer than I am now .. and the service was ok, but certainly no one would be treated like this at TJ's let alone Zabars. Agata and Valentina looked good when I passed by this morning. I saw the outside seating and the sign as I walked by heading South on 1st Avenue. When I entered a section that appeared to be a nice cafe, I was pleasantly greeted by the nice young lady. She saw me taking photos and smiled at my excitement when I told her how nice the space was. She said she was glad I liked it. Naturally I gravitated to the coffee and pastries. There's so many selections I haven't seen elsewhere. They have fresh sandwiches prepared too. I thought I would check out the grocery section and then return for something to eat. I was still taking photos when I entered the produce department. All of a sudden the produce employee decided to tell me I wasn't allowed to take photos in there. He said you need to go ask the store manager. I left and walked around the corner where I spotted the cheese section. I went on a little further and noticed there were no customers in the store. I can understand why. I didn't feel welcome at all. It was obvious the customers that did shop there were doing what I did. They got coffee and pastries from the nice friendly employee section and then went outside to sit. I doubt I will return. I have other places close by that welcome me and my business. read more

Amazing selection and the staff I encountered were really friendly. My only wish is that they had lower chair options in both stores. It is impossible for someone short and with a stick and a new knee to stay for coffee or a break. You can't beat the variety in this place. They have a great selection of different breads and lots of salad and sides to choose from. I got a loaf of Italian bread and some tuna salad to make a sandwich, and a quinoa salad as a side. Everything was fresh and delicious. read more

We tried their dinner pre fixe - pasta + entree for $14.99. I got chicken parm with pasta in bolognese and roasted veg. It looked good but tasted flavorless. 0 stars!! Very disappointing given that their food from the hot food deli section is normally delicious. They had choice of three proteins, two pastas and two sauces for pre-fixe dinner. I also got overcharged for my bagel. It was marked 99cents but I got charged $1.50 at the counter and only realized after I got home. Their basil pesto, mozzarella is good. 4 stars. I've stopped by Agatha several times with the intention of buying veggies or fish from this market. There is always a line and always crowded. However I always end up leaving with nothing. The crazy high prices always stop me on my tracks, I cannot stomach to pay $10 for a piece of broccoli or $10 for a loaf of bread. I don't buy their already made food, I only go for the raw foods. I know prices are much better at Whole Foods or even better at Fairway. I'll just stick to those spots. read more

Just the best freakin Italian grocery store ever. Pricey-- yes. But worth it, YES! I love to frequent this store even though it's not near my normal everyday route. Their fresh made mozzarella is killer and made right in front of you in the cheese section by the entrance! Love the stuffed peppers with prosciutto and provolone here that I can't find anywhere else in the groceries store close to me so I come often to buy them. I think some of the other reviews here are a bit unfair. Yes, pre-made grocery store food is generally bad. When is the last time you had good fried chicken or sushi at Fairway? The point is to buy your groceries, not to expect restaurant quality from prepared foods. That being said, A&V has a decent selection but is very narrowly focused on Italian foods. You can find good treats like fresh chicken livers or gold metal pate. But you will not find more mundane items like organic cottage cheese. I would not say that their prices are higher than other grocery stores (e.g. D'Agostino) in the area, but the food quality is better. The new GF store that opened across the street is a brilliant concept that I think should be way more popular. I am not GF but have friends who are and know how difficult it is to find groceries. I have bought almond milk and other small things from that store as well. read more

When I tell you I actually cried being here it's SO difficult to find good, gluten free foods. There were so many options and everything looked amazing. My wife bought quite a bit at Agata & Valentina. She is gluten free due to inflammation. She had seen it, then wanted us to go back. We were glad we did. I am impressed by retail stores that offer items you don't see elsewhere or online. That is increasingly uncommon, but it is the only hope for brick and mortar businesses, in addition to offering an experience (and discovery through shopping is the source of as much pleasure as the acquisition itself). The regular selections are interesting as well. The only thing that was not a positive surprise were signs saying no photos. Perhaps they had a bad encounter. I remember a Washington DC restaurateur who prohibited photos. That was before smartphones. She had a temper too. She eventually went out of business. It defies contemporary norms to disallow photos. There are a few essential businesses that bring more pleasure to me than Agata & Valentina, especially over the last year! While I have always loved shopping here, the joys of knowing that all of their cut fruit is fresh and their desserts and breads are exceptional have helped to make my experiences in their store even more pleasurable. I called them 6 times to report this and they never transfered me with the manager, not even apologized or anything. Manager would not accept return or exchange despite it clearly being in A&V's own house label because I don't take a printed receipt.
