Well, a "Last Ditch Effort" to find this restarting acceptable for something other than shelter in a storm, and boy did they blow it! It's one thing to offer poor service, a bar that is fundamentally unable to fulfill its core purpose, and a queso so watered down and thin has dissolved into a watery lackluster reality. But to send a server to the table who literally cannot even take a simple food order is about as bad as it could possibly get. The burnt out sign and very few patrons should have been a red flag. After going to the Lake Myra lights nearby, this was the first restaurant we came across and not being familiar with the area and assuming nothing else was open, we went in. That was a mistake. I like Mexican food as does our party of four. We each got a different meal, same ingredients remixed and same reaction. One overpowering ingredient - SALT. Perhaps the food was sitting all day or the cook was off for the night but it was really bad. Possibly the worst Mexican I have ever had. The ironic thing was a large group nearby all barely touched their food and one man I saw, when asked, declined a takeaway box. Salt should be a flavor enhancer. It is not a flavor in itself, unless the food was being preserved for a long time or something was being covered up. There was no natural flavors or juices present. It's hard to mess up rice and beans but unfortunately, Agave managed to master. I sampled some of my companions dishes and just nothing special. They have some work to do. read more

The atmosphere is spot on and staff were really nice. We had a family of four and place was relatively busy on Friday night. It took the server for awhile to take our drink order as well as food but it was busy so understandable. The food was good and drinks were great. I had to take one star off because of the attentiveness of the staff as my daughter's drink and my wife's drink was empty and had to flag her to get a refill. Overall good experience here read more

Hear me out, as I recognize the importance of supporting a local Mom & Pop restaurant or shop especially in a small town, this establishment will remain off the radar for some time due to its last (3rd) fail. Each being epically frustrating. Nothing more than an apology to encourage me back. LOL There are more fresh, speedier mobile truck options in 3 other directions within 2-3 miles from this tired place. "Taco Trucks" at Lizard Lick & Hwy 64 business, Food Lion, Compare Foods, Mr. G's, or the Tamale Lady at the tire station. Each with the freshest traditional Central American foods. ALL OF WHICH ARE FAR BEYOND what agave produces. read more

My husband and I love Agave! For both dine in and carry out, the service is efficient, orders have always been correct, and the amount of food per order is always more than enough for one. The atmosphere is usually a quieter one but we've seen large groups enjoying a meal too. A Wendell favorite! read more

This place #$%&ing sucked. I've been there before, and it was a relatively regular Mexican restaurant. Tonight, it was a #$%&ing %!@$-show. 1. The margarita tasted like straight-up lime-aid. There wasn't a drop of alcohol in it. Straight-up stealing. 2. It took over an hour to get food. Seriously. After ordering, it took over an hour. 3. During that hour, the server never dropped by--not even once. I was having to wave ANYONE walking by down. 4. I asked, "do you have ceviche?" The waiter said, "Yes. Fish or shrimp" I ordered the fish. After an hour, I was served grilled tilapia that was chopped-up and mixed with onion, tomato, advocado, and lemon/lime marinade. I asked, "you grilled the fish?" The waiter replied, "yes." I said, "you don't cook the fish in ceviche... you marinade it in lemon and lime juice..." He said, "its MEXICAN ceviche" and insisted the entire time I was there that ceviche was prepared by grilling the fish. 5. The waiter then just acted like a straight-up $%&! when I refused the "ceviche" he served. 6. The rice on the other dish was absolutely flavorless. Waited over an hour, the waiter straight-up lied about having ceviche, then tried to lie about how ceviche should be cooked, the rest of the food wasn't that good, the margarita had no alcohol in it, and the service was awful despite all the mistakes and issues with the food. I've been going here for a few years now. Great local place. Today I went and decided to really test the menu. I asked for a special burrito. Pastor! Usually they only offer pastor in a taco. They made it special for me. I then asked if they had mole and to my surprise they now offer mole!!!Rich cocoa flavor with a hint of spice. Delicious. This place is incredible with authentic food and ambiance. For starters, the chips and salsa are to die for - perfect texture and quality. I also really enjoyed having live music here. The musician was very fun and interactive, and a talented guitarist and singer. I will definitely have to come back here to try more food on their menu. read more

Nice little place in the middle of somewhere NC. The dinner was interesting but very attentive staff. We started with the side of queso and a side of guac... the queso was way to thin, and needed to be a little thicker to work as an appetizer, (did well as an add on to pour over things. The first attempt to bring out guacamole was chopped up in a plate like a salad with tiny pieces of avocado, onions and tomatoes. Stange way to bring it out... I suggested they take it back and bring real guacamole. which they did, almost to processed but not terrible. We ordered the fajitas for 2. with shrimp, steak, chicken and chorizo. Lots of Shrimp and chorizo but not much of anything else but over sauteed veggies. But all in all the meal was not terribly bad and very flavorful... not many other choices in this area other than a pizza parlor and an Asian restaurant... had my share of asian food this week already and to scared to try it out in this small town. We totally enjoyed our lunch today at Agave Mexican Bar & Grill. Warmly greeted at the door then were seated at a booth by the window. I noticed how clean the place was, no sticky floor or dirty tables. Our food from the chips and tasty salsa and the fresh cilantro in the pico de gallo to our chimichangas we're delicious! I am so glad that this restaurant is here and hopefully will stay for a long time. Wendell needs stability and quality to please the locals. Mexican food is a perfect match because you get more for your money. I love the variety on the menu and the vegetarian choices. My only complaint (and the reason for 4 star rating) is the speed of service. I have been several times (perhaps a dozen?) and it is definitely a bit of a wait sometimes. I can see how that would happen in a small town restaurant. You don't want to overstaff and have that cost eat into your profit. And it certainly doesn't keep me from coming back - they do give you chips and salsa - but something to think about and plan for if you come starving or have small children to entertain. read more

Relatively new restaurant in downtown Wendell, NC. When I went they didn't have a liquor license yet and it wasn't very busy (weeknight). The interior is nicely decorated and above average. It looks like they paid a lot of attention to details, even the menus look like they are professionally designed. Service was quick and friendly. Food was quite good and portions were big. Prices are pretty typical for Mexican food in the area, so it's pretty good value for your money. Would definitely recommend! read more

Tuesday 11/12/2019 at 3:20pm, my family and I pulled into the parking lot (parked in front of the OPEN sign in the window). It was raining and as we got out of the vehicle, three people ran out the side door & got into a vehicle with AGAVE in the rear window. I walked up to the door but it was locked, the hour sign showed that were open during at this time. I called via cell phone, but no answer. Took my family there for the MILs birthday. I chose this restaurant because of the good reviews I had read on yelp. I only saw two bad ones. One said: be prepared to wait. And we did. They took our order as soon as we were seated but the food came out 45 minutes later. So, yeah. Be prepared to wait. Another review was something like comparing it to Taco Bell saying Taco Bell would have gotten five stars. .... I agree. The food had practically no flavor and a spoon was needed for the refried beans. The only flavor I could pick out in the watery queso was milk. We won't be going back. read more

I don't normally give reviews good or bad, but I was totally disappointed with the customer service we received . A friend and I thought we would try Agave since she had heard good things about their food. My complaint is not about their food, it's about the staffs attitude. Not one person was polite or inviting. The person who took our order was NOT pleasant at all. What can I say. It's not good. The meats are not seasoned and the "beef" looks like it came either as processed frozen "meat" or it comes from a can. It's gross and looks off putting. The bean come from a can- the guacamole is not fresh and the rice is so bland! Plus, the food is pretty high priced for what the are serving. The sweet tea is very good. Wow, why did I wait so long to try this place?! Let's just say I won't ever have to drive to Raleigh for good Mexican food again. I encourage every local to try this place if you already haven't. I've lived in Wendell for 9 years and I'm so disappointed I've overlooked this cute little place. It is very clean and the staff were great. The delicious margarita and scrumptious chips started this meal off right. The steak tacos and the house special vaca loca, far exceeded my expectations. Just had a very disappointing pick up experience at Agave. Hubby went in to order nachos and was asked to pay immediately. That wouldn't be problem if he didn't witness the next person come in, place their order and not be asked for payment immediately. Additionally, when the order was announced and hubby claimed it, he was asked to show a receipt. Again, this wouldn't be an issue if others were asked for the same. At this point he requested a refund and was prepared to walk out because of the BLATANT racism, but another staff member (possibly the owner/manager?) intervened and offered him a credit for his next order. We took my husband there for his birthday. We are hoping to buy a house in town soon and wanted to check out the local scene. I am so glad we did. The place is a real gem. The food was wonderful. The service could not have been better. There were seven of us and half of our party was running really late. They went ahead and seated us and did not make us feel bad for not having everyone there. Feeding that many people was very reasonably priced and everyone was happy with their food. That hardly ever happens. This will become a regular place to go for us. read more

Solid little Mexican joint in Wendell, North Carolina you get exactly what you would expect which is delicious Mexican fast and fresh. The freshly-made guacamole is as fresh as you can imagine with coarsely diced avocados tomatoes and onions. Not to be confused with the guacamole dip which is the regular puréed stuff. read more

Stopped by here while traveling to Middlesex to see the light display. We were seated promptly and our drink order was taken by someone else. Ordered chocolate milk for our children (not on the menu) and drinks for ourself. A few minutes later the same person came back along with what would become our server and informed us they didn't have chocolate milk. We then asked for apple juice (on the menu) and we were told they didn't have that either. Ended up ordering water for our children because I won't let them have soda all the time. I asked for the Milanese torta and was informed they didn't have that either so I ended up with the carne asada torta. My children each ordered the pizza. When they brought the food out my children's pizzas were barely cooked and even the cheese on one was barely melted. Unfortunately, it gets worse from here... My torta was drenched in residue from the cleaning the grill! Having worked in the culinary industry for quite some time, I am very familiar with flattops and the residue left after cleaning the grill. It even has a unique smell. Big chunks of residue/grease were stuck to the bottom of the sandwich. I informed my server who took it off our bill (I didn't complain that the pizzas were barely cooked). When I went to pay the check, the cashier stated that it was due to the grill being to hot and burning the bread. Sorry but that was not the problem! read more
