I've seen this restaurant a few times but kept forgetting to try it. Yesterday we wanted Mexican and remembered and gave it a shot. We got in and got a seat for 4 no problem. Service was fast. Wasn't crowded and was a very nice looking restaurant. We ordered a margarita flight, sangria and another drink which was all good. Then we ordered nachos which hit the spot. Agave is an artisan restaurant; with no disrespect to popular chains, there's simply no comparison. The only thing I didn't like were their chips; made in-house they were thick, tasteless and cold. $9 for the chips and a good portion of Pico de Gallo. No freebies, here. Now my review gets better. Let's talk margaritas. With a choice of hand-crafted drinks, we chose a pitcher of La Classica made with exotico blanco tequila, orange liqueur, agave, lime and orange. Delicious! If you come during happy hour, the $37 pitcher reduces to $25. Quesadilla de camaron is filled with shrimp, crab meat, chihuahua cheese and vegetables. Perfect! It's plated with a sauce, too spicy for me. I cut it with sour cream and made what amounted to a really good dressing for the salad. My husband ordered a short rib burrito, also highly recommended. He had a little ramekin of guacamole, a step above other guacs that I've tried. The restaurant currently runs a $40 dinner special which includes any appetizer, entree and dessert. To sweeten the deal they provide a gratis bottle of house wine with every two dinners. Worth a visit! read more

We had been to this restaurant years ago. Don't know what took us so long to return. This is a wonderful restaurant making authentic Mexican food. (And yummy cocktails!) I have often wondered about Agave but have driven past after visits to Longwood or The Wyeth but today was the day. This is a very attractive restaurant and the staff is quick to greet you with warm sincere smiles. It is easy to get comfortable quickly and neighboring tables were enjoying their beverages. But you need to be prepared for STICKER SHOCK because the Agave's prices are a bit higher than your typical Mexican restaurant. So, if you are looking for a $15 plate of enchiladas or three tacos for $10 you won't find them here. You aren't going to be given a bowl of chips with salsa that we have come to expect when going out for Mexican. Based on our food choices those extra dollars were worth it. My dining partner went "yum" when biting into the mushroom taco and I was impressed with the shrimp and crab quesadilla I ordered. Chips even a small plate with salsa still would have been appreciated. There was a shredded "salad" with the quesadilla that seemed "old" and warm rather than cold and crisp. I ate it but ... So happy that we were finally able to try out Agave. For appetizers, we ordered the guacamole, nachos with chicken, and queso fundido. All of them were fantastic! For my entree, I ordered the Camarones a la Diabla. I absolutely loved the flavor of the sauce and the rice and vegetables that accompanied the shrimp. And the best part of the night was the desserts! We ordered the tres leches, spicy chocolate mousse cake, and the flan. They were recommended by our server since they are the 3 that are made in house. The flan was good, but the tres leches and spicy chocolate mousse cake were to die for! We rarely get dessert but so glad we shared an amazing cheesecake with a brûlée top, mixed berry sauce and yummy crust. My only complaint was the restaurant was cold. I have been to Agave half a dozen times. I like the ambiance - small, cozy, and dimly lit. The service is fine. The food has always been ok. There was never a reason to write about it. However, after our most recent visit I have to say the food was not great. We started with guacamole, which there isn't much to screw up there. I just would have preferred jalapeños chopped up rather than slices. No biggie. Easier for people to pick out that do not want the spice. I ordered tacos de carne asada (a favorite of mine). I was excited to try them with cheese, pineapple and avocado. Sadly I did not finish them because all I could taste was grease/fat. It was so overwhelming I felt nauseous and quickly lost my appetite. My husband had fajitas which were not any better. The chicken looked too perfect. Too perfect meaning - you know the over processed grilled chicken from the frozen section? If you do, that's what it looked like. Fresh chicken breast has some texture when you cut into it. This meat was smooth which is how over processed meat appears. I tried some to see if the seasoning could save the taste - nope. It was horrible. I want to love this place and support it, but for what you pay and the quality you get, I have to give Agave two stars. read more

This is an upscale food hall convenient to downtown Wilmington. There are plenty of options for all food preferences. The prices were generally $12-$20 per entree across most vendors. The space is very clean and there are tons of indoor and outdoor seating arrangements. The bar was fairly basic and not as pricey as I expected given the food prices. Each vendor we went to across our group was fairly slow, but they did cook to order. Individual reviews: Al forno: people in our group ordered the spinach and ricotta pasta, carbonara and a four cheese pizza. The four cheese pizza was incredibly cheesy, but had an over-abundance of Gorgonzola/blue cheese that overwhelmed the pizza. The addition of hot sauce from another vendor made it tolerable. The pasta dishes were delicious! I wish they had offered banana peppers and a better variety of pizza toppings. Mexican vendor: I had their chicken Caesar salad and it was fantastic! The chicken was tender and moist, and the Caesar dressing tasted homemade and the salad was fresh. Espresso: the crepes were overcooked and tough to eat, but the coffee was fantastic read more

We went here on our way back from Longwood gardens! Decided Mexican was the best way to end our day :) I got the seafood quesadilla while my husband just got the chorizo cheese dip. We didn't realize this was a more upscale Mexican place where you had to pay for your chips (doesn't come free) but that's fine. My husband enjoyed his cheese dip and I enjoyed my quesadilla. I did not like how expensive everything was compared to the food we got (smallest quesadilla I've ever seen!) by the food was pretty good. What an incredible experience at Agave Mexican Cuisine! From the moment we walked in, the staff was so welcoming, but our waitress Claudia truly made the experience special. She was sweet, attentive, and offered fantastic recommendations. We started with the chips and guac, and they were beautifully served, fresh, and bursting with flavor. The guac had the perfect balance of creaminess and seasoning. Then, I had the surf and turf fajitas, which were a special that day. They were sizzling when they arrived, and the combination of perfectly seasoned steak and shrimp was amazing. The fajitas came with black beans and rice. Every bite was a flavor explosion--it was *chef's kiss*. My husband got the birria tacos, and the consomé on the side was absolutely impeccable--rich, flavorful, and the perfect dip for the tacos. We both agreed it was some of the best food we've had in a while! I also have to mention the spicy margaritas--they're freshly made with no artificial sweeteners, which really made a difference. They were perfectly balanced, and we ended up ordering more! Another great touch is that they have rotating food specials, which keeps things exciting and gives you a reason to keep coming back. We had had a rough 48 hours with power outages and no ability to cook, so this was a late night dinner for us to escape the dark hot summer madness. We badly needed air conditioning and a drink as well. This is important later. Our friends had recommended this place, but we were skeptical because we know that we would be picky about Mexican food having lived in San Antonio. Agave is a comfortable unassuming place with about 10 tables and a small bar. Previously, this location had been a WaWa. While it took a while for our server to acknowledge us, once the service started it was fine and she was friendly. At times I struggled to make out what she was saying over the music. It could have been the volume or my aging concert expert ears. At least she didn't complain about having to repeat herself. The evening started off with some margaritas. I ordered the El Matador with a sugar rim (they didn't have tajin). My wife ordered something jalapeno infused. Round two she shifted to my drink because it was delicious. The El Matador is a delicious drink with a blood orange liqueur. I'm glad that I had the inspiration to ask for a sugar rim because it took it to the next level. For appetizer we order the queso with chorizo. I'm assuming what was delivered was more traditional than what I was expecting. While tasty, as my wife said it "required too much work" when compared to a dip. I would skip next time. For dinner, I ordered the Tuesday special fajitas, requesting a mix of steak and shrimp. My wife ordered the Bronzino a la Veracruzana (sea bass with capers and olives in white wine). The shrimp pieces were massive knuckle busters and the steak tender and delicious. The black beans and rice were cooked to perfection. I wasn't totally on board with the spices used, but I rolled with it and had a delicious dinner. During our dinner we got a notification that the power had been returned at our house! Ironically, the Agave lost power later during our meal. Luckily, we had no plans for desert and by the time it was time for the bill the power had been restored, so there was no need for an emergency run to a WaWa atm. If only they had left one here during the renovation! lol. We will be back. My second choice from the menu was going to be a chicken enchilada but request the Mole sauce instead. read more

It's been a while since I've visited this place and was in the neighborhood one day so I decided to stop by for some lunch. At my last dining experience here I was a tad put off by the somewhat eclectic Mexican menu and having to pay for so so chips and salsa. Things haven't changed much - still eclectic and still charging for so so chips/salsa. The salsa is pretty good but served in a small bowl so you usually have to ask for another in ten minutes. The chips are thick yellow corn chips and some are usually over fried and kinda like tooth breakers. I had the empanada appetizer, and the burrito filled with shrimp and chicken as an entree. The empanadas were "good" though not really flavored with much spice and a tad pricey for their size. The burrito was again "good" but in my opinion lacked any definitive Mexican spice flavoring which made me wonder, are they catering to an older crowd? While the shrimp and chicken seemed fresh the combo along with the cheese didn't work so well. The filling's highlights were only the shrimp and maybe the chicken. Rarely done by me, but I left a third of the burrito uneaten. Arriving after the lunch rush, this small restaurant was a quiet and empty except a for a two-top table of ladies and a guy at the bar. I could hear the staff hanging out in the kitchen's food pickup area discussing a recent female patron. I know the language well and I suppose they thought that no customer in the restaurant did, so they were speaking in Spanish in a very loud and vulgar manor laughing about this person and making a few inappropriate jokes about her and her fellow diners. My waitress was kind enough to break away from the customer banging rhetoric to check on me once but aside from that I was relatively unattended to and had to listen to this disgusting diatribe in Spanish while trying to eat my meal. Do these folks not know that some "gringos" do know their language? I can only imagine what they'd be saying about me. Dunno if I'll be back, eh, probably not. read more

Visited on a weeknight for a birthday celebration with two others. Plenty of parking, well lit entrance. We were greeted and seated right away. Took a minute for a waitress to take our drink order, but things moved quickly from there. Staff was very good, and so was the food. Though I am not a fan of Mexican cuisine, my guests were, and they also had many non-Mexican offerings. We had apps, main courses, dessert and coffees-all were excellent! Nice little eatery with great service. Complementary chips had nice crunch and nice salsa pairing. I had a guava margarita which wasn't super guava-y but still made for a nice refreshing drink. I had a carne asada burrito which came with a small side salad. Burrito was packed with flavor, meat, rice, beans, and cheese melding together. The salad was mostly just lettuce with a bit of tomato and a light dressing, so nice for a couple of bites but not as enjoyable as burrito itself. I think the ambiance was nice, and my friend and I were satisfied after our meal. Clean bathrooms, plenty of parking, good food, quick service. All around great experience. read more

The food was okay, slightly cold. Did not have chips and salsa at the table unless you bought $17 guacamole. The house salad was really good but to add shrimp you were charged $3 per shrimp so our daughter's salad went from 12 dollars to 27 dollars. Its not authentic Mexican food so if that's is what your looking for this place is not it. Whenever I'm in town, Agave is at the top of my list of restaurants I have to visit. The fish tacos are my absolute favorite - the combo of the crispy fish, avocado, cabbage and spicy mayo is out of this world. However, the chicken tacos are a close second. I love that you can get a taco sampler and get two of each (that's normally what I do). I'd also recommend the tuna burrito! I'm pretty sure they used to be only BYOB but when I visited last week they had a drink menu with wine, beer, and mixed drinks. read more

Stumbled upon this place while in the area and what a pleasant find. This spot is quaint and casual but also nice enough for a more fancy date night or gathering. The service was friendly and helpful. This is not quite traditional Mexican food , the food is more modern but there are some traditional offerings. I got the vegetarian cauliflower tacos and a side of sweet plantains. The tacos were fresh and had great flavor. Worth a visit if you are looking for a fresh take on Mexican dining. Great little spot in the heart of Wyeth country! Fabulous decor, competitive prices, great menu selections, adult beverages, and the food...did I mention the amazing food??? Every morsel was a tantalizing delight. Homemade guacamole and chips, side salad with, quite honestly, the best vinaigrette I've ever had, and a delectable burrito filled with grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, white rice, black beans, and perfectly tender veggies.
