I do like how they offer reservations for certain breed chicks but they are on the expensive side and I will say I took very good of my chicks and most of them did not even make it passed the summer something just seemed off and will most likely not be coming back unfortunately read more

I stumbled across this little gem while out perusing the SoBro (South Broad Ripple for all you out-of-towners) area for a possible spot for dinner. I'd heard about Agrarian and had always thought to myself "I need to visit that place," but had never really gone out of the way to find it and stop in. I am not an urban farmer, though I am into simple living and I've had a couple of friends recently get into both beekeeping and raising chickens. So, how to describe Agrarian? In their own words, "Agrarian is a local homestead supply and general store. We strive to educate and supply our local community with the information and tools to set up their own backyard farm!" They offer bee keeping supplies, chicken keeping supplies, custom crafted chicken coops, composting supplies, raised garden supplies, local and all-natural feeds, canning/fermenting supplies, rain water harvesting tools, Indiana grown fruit/veggie starts, homesteading gift items and quite a bit in the way of locally crafted food items. Yes, they really do sell chicks (they have what they call "chick days," and it's a good idea to follow them on Facebook as I've heard the chicks sell out quickly). They also offer a variety of classes related to their products. The first thing I noticed with Agrarian was that they had a wheelchair accessible spot right up front, not quite ADA compliant but in this neighborhood any sign of accessibility is a major perk. They also have installed a nicely done ramp up to their sidewalk (short, but even and a decent incline). The front door, glass and pretty manageable, leads you to an inside where they have yet another gently declining ramp into their retail area. While this may also have to do with the number of people who buy heavy feed products, there's clearly an intentional effort at accessibility and it works beautifully. They even have a single-stall bathroom that is also accessible. I'm sometimes hesitant to stop in at places shortly before they close, in this case 6pm, but the employee working the counter was super friendly and helpful. I had a pretty good idea that I wouldn't be buying anything tonight, but I fell in love with their home decor and listened to the employee as she worked with other customers in a friendly, knowledgeable way. The truth is that if I wasn't in the middle of selling my home, I'd be tempted to try out the chicks or at least the bees (That would serve my grumpy neighbors, eh?). I just loved everything about this place, including their delightfully friendly and surprisingly wheelchair comfortable cat, Tony (or it could be Toni. I didn't check. Ya know?). If you've ever found yourself intrigued by beekeeping, chickens, composting, gardening or anything else in the area of urban farming, Agrarian is definitely the spot for you. While you do have to look for it, it's right next to Tiny House Treats, you can just look for the chicken coop to the side of the house and that extraordinary sense of urban nirvana that will instantly arrive once you've found it. read more

Agrarian is a cute as can be urban homesteading spot where you can get your fix on bees, soap making, and of course chickens. As a former 4-H champion (no autographs, please) I was more than a little excited about purchasing a home to have a little farm in the city. After much coaxing and proving to my significant other how serious I was by way of building a coop, I was given permission to get my little creatures in order. Rural King and TSC are great options if you want 12+ chickies - I was looking for 4, so Agrarian selling in small amounts was perfect. They primarily sell sexed pullets, but when I went had a rooster they were rehoming for free. If I lived a little more spaced out I would have taken the little guy. The gal working was very nice and let me know she was newer to working at the shop. Although this was her first exposure to backyard fowl, she asked the right questions about whether I had a brooder at home, if I had the right supplies, etc. if you don't know what a brooder is or understand the importance, ask them! Agrarian has everything you need to get a backyard flock started and maintain your feathered friends' health and well being. 4 stars simply because the chicks were a bit pricey ($8 each) - I definitely understand paying for convenience of getting a smaller number of chicks but paying almost double what you would elsewhere is a bit kooky, even for Meridian Kessler standards. The variety in this little space blows me away. Even if you're not into raising chickens, or even goats, they still have something for you. Wanna make your own cheese or soap? They've got the answers and supplies. The list goes on and on. You have to go in to really get a good feel for all the things. The people are knowledgeable and friendly. This store sells stuff that is just SO cute and kitschy cool...if you're into farm/nature type stuff. I seriously LOVE the blown-glass birds and the chicken kitchen towels. However, what this shop is really all about is making your own food. It's across the street from Lava Lips, so you can hit 2 shops on the same block and have a beer at Upland or Sinking Ship when you're done. There is parking in the lot across 49th St. or you can park on the street. There's a step up to get in, be aware if you use a wheelchair. Take the kids! Great place to meet chicks, chickens, fish, and the resident cat. A great play area with a toy barn to distract the young'uns while you browse. Super friendly and patient staff.
