Made my yearly pilgrimage (after Mother's Day) to Agua Fria nursery for my tomato plants. Every time I try to buy from another garden center, the tomatoes are a disappointment. So I now stick to the routine and buy a quality plant from Agua Fria! Of course, I tell myself to stay focused and just look in the tomato greenhouse. But the nursery is full of temptations down every row and section. I ended up with four varieties of tomatoes, two varieties of cucumbers, leeks, and a mesa red blanket flower. I only stopped because my friend has a small hatchback and the space was limited. Everyone that works there is friendly and helpful. I have found that the plants I buy from Agua Fria are healthy and productive and great value in the long run of our short and unpredictable growing season. read more

Great selection of plants, but this is the real life version of the SNL reoccurring skit for Total Bastard Airlines. They are so put out by having to deal with customers! I went there 5 times over a number of years, hoping that "that last time" was a one off, and maybe this time they would be nice. I think they can smell money, because some people were treated like valued customers. I'm nice and polite, raised by parents who stressed manners and kindness. Purchased a Peony tree plant at Aqua Fria as a present for my wife during the week of Valentine's Day 2026. After picking out the tree with the staff, they advised me that they would not release the plant and they would care for it in their greenhouse. I was told that I should pick it up around Mothers Day. I paid for the plant and got my receipt. Transcaction complete. Today, 5/11/26, my wife went to the nursery to pick up the plant and the owner/manger refused to honor the purchase and said she needed to pay double the amount. The receipt which was provided during purchase was labeled Peony Tree and was paid in full. The nursery said I only paid for a rose plant and refused to provide the product I purchased. This was the worst customer service I've ever experienced. They embarrassed my wife and acted like the mistake was hers. She waited three months for this gift and all she got was zilch. If there was a pricing error on the sale, the owner could certainly have called within the three months to clarify or rectify the issue. Didn't happen! All Shane (owner/manager) said was next customer please. As other comments on this website say, 1 star, snobby and clearly they do not provide good faith in sales and service. read more

Just almost picture perfect but I walked out of there vowing never to return based on customer service, pricing and where were all the xeriscape water wise plants. Hello we live in a desert. First up, I was looking for water wise plants only. They didn't seem to have a dedicated area for these, so that was my first clue. Second, the prices. OH MY GAWD. I am not paying $18.99 for a blue fescue. I get that these are gorgeous plants but honestly it's just the same Monrovia shit I see at Lowe's. Didn't see many local or native plants. Yesterday was my first time going to Agua Fria and I was so excited because they had a lot of Hoyas I didn't have in my collection and Albuquerque doesn't get any unique ones. The problem was none of the Hoyas were labeled (most of the plants there were not) , and when I asked the owner bob he had no idea what any of them were. This is a huge problem with Hoyas because the plants can be extremely difficult to identify until they bloom (even experts have trouble). This was pretty disappointing and I ended up only buying one from the nursery. Along with this a lot of the houseplants where covered in mealy bugs, and they acted like this was a normal occurrence and it wasn't harmful to the plants.... One of the Hoyas I was interested in was infested and bob quickly grabbed it and said that one wouldn't be for sell (which was understandable). But there were still a few on the other ones I was considering that the cashier had to spray off the bugs, which was nice but I still have had to treat the plant and quarantine it. What concerns me is anyone who is a beginning houseplant parent buying from here and having there collection infested especially since a few other people have commented about bug issues. read more

More of that Santa Fe, "I'm too cool for you" customer service! I asked an employee if they had a particular variety of rose. Her response was "probably not"....didn't even stop what she was doing to look at me. Customers are such a nuisance! The tall guy with the dreadlocks, & one other guy working there, was helpful & actually doing something. Oh, and rude girl was shuffling plants around. The rest of the team was either sitting on their butts &/or deep in conversation about....dragons. Prices & selection are good. They have hard to find & unusual things. I love the layout of the place. Unfortunately, I will not be going back. I don't need the aggravation & there are just too many other nurseries in the area. And something needs to be done about the trash pile under the sign by the road. Maybe they could get the dude that was riding a pull cart around like it was a skateboard to pick it up. read more

I'm a big fan. I have had nothing but excellent service here for many years. The owner, Bob and his son Shane, along with the many familiar and seasonal faces have always been helpful and full of great advice. To me, this is the go to place in Santa Fe for roses. The best time to check out the selection is late January and February before are spoken for by others. You buy them and they mark them as sold with your name and then keep them in the greenhouse until sometime mid to late May when you can pick them up and take them home. in between, it's always intoxicating to go to the greenhouses and walk among the blooming roses. I obtained a number of fruit trees and evergreens here. Excellent selection. I also think their perennial and annual selections are very good. I've purchased Dahlias and peonies here as well as various bulbs. Excellent results. Also a good source of potting soil and various soil amendments that I prefer to use with prices that are in line with what you can find online, so why not give the business locally. I should also mention that they have a good selection of herbs. read more

This nursery may have been wonderful in past years but certainly not anymore. The extreme rudeness of the employees who were clueless and downright angry while picking up my rose bushes that were picked out and ordered over a month ago is not only wrong but abusive. Who do you people think you are....seriously yelling at 70 year old women picking up rose bushes. Your staff should be ashamed. It's not the first time I've noticed this behavior by their employees. You think you are so cool, you try acting so cool....not even close people. Not even close. This nursery will never see my money. again. Go to Plants of the Southwest where they actually sell native plants not Monrovia. Where the employees are actually knowledgeable, kind and don't sell water gobbling petunias. read more

I live locally and have been really trying to support local businesses for items that I can get on Amazon. While this nursery has an excellent supply of wonderful plants and I commend them for that, the service and staff are unfriendly, unhelpful and sometimes rude. This review is not based on one interaction or experience. I understand we all have bad days. This review is based on more than one visits to to the nursery as well as negative experiences my partner has had. My experience today was the straw that broke the camel's back- I went in to get some gardening supplies and was not only completely ignored by that staff, when I sought out help the staff member was so rude (despite my friendly approach and disposition) and I had so much time waiting to pay for something I looked at Amazon and the same item was 33% cheaper. TO THE OWNER - I would have been happy to pay 33% more for an item knowing that it is keeping other New Mexicans employed; however, I am not willing to do so if I am treated poorly. I literally ordered the item on Amazon in the parking lot. YOU ARE LOSING MONEY BECAUSE YOUR STAFF ARE RUDE AND IT'S ON YOU TO TRAIN AND TO MAKE SURE YOUR EMPLOYEES ARE CUSTOMER SERVICE-ORIENTED. The staff at Agua Fria Nursery are incredibly rude. Except for a few individuals, the majority of the staff don't want to talk to people and answer questions. They could care less about customer service and don't want to be bothered. The impression I get is that they don't want to waste their time helping anybody. I shouldn't be made to feel as though I'm bothering them when I want to make an informed decision. One gal (within earshot) said I had decision paralysis because I was enjoying my morning and taking my time on deciding what to buy. I was quite appalled. If it wasn't for customers like me and others who gladly spend our money to enhance our gardens, they wouldn't have a job. My distaste for the staff is growing more and more. Was at the nursery today with my wife she asked a simple question to Bob the owner and he spoke down to her and actually raised his voice at her in a whole line full of Other customers. It was very very embarrassing and this is after my wife has spent probably $2000 in the last seven days at Agua Fria nursery, and several thousand dollars every year. My wife and I will never go back to AF nursery because we were treated so poorly over a simple question on Landscape dirt. Bob should learn to be a little bit more customer. We're saving our money for Plants of the Southwest when they reopen. read more

Poor Karen A. I am so sorry she had horrible customer service. Must've been a bad day a Agua Fria Nursery (AFN from here on). I have been going for a couple of years now and the folks I think are pretty helpful. Example: I was looking for specific rosebush and I asked young girl who didn't know; she suggested I ask another person that worked there and pointed about 6 feet away to a gentleman that was with another customer. I wasn't really involved in purchasing this rosebush, I was just curious. So I continued with my shopping. This young woman found me in another part of the nursery and took me back to show me where that rosebush was. I thought that was pretty good customer service. Anyway, I think the nursery is a pretty cool, fun place, lots of variety and knowledgeable and helpful folks. Note: the parking lot is challenging, especially when AFN is really busy. But again, the folks at ANF still help with traffic and finding parking spot for you. read more

My feeling is the same as the others, with the exception of the folks directing traffic and parking, the rest of the staff acts like customers are an inconvenience and check out takes forever because they're so busy chatting with each other or dissing the customer who just left. read more

We went in twice. The first day, it was ok. Went in the next day and the service was very bad. Asked how much an unmarked plant was and the gentleman at the counter said "I don't know what it is", and that was the end of his conversation. We really felt like he didn't care one way or the other. I'm pretty thick skinned having living in Santa Fe all my life and used to the Santa Fe business ethic and I wanted to say something but thought I would leave a review. At first I thought maybe I over reacted but when my wife and daughter said "what was up with him?", I guess it was pretty obvious. After reading the reviews it seems there service has always been bad. They really don't seem to care and it doesn't seem to affect their business, so I guess no matter what anyone says, as read in other reviews, they will continue to be in business and perpetuate their "been in business since the 70's and we're not likely to go anywhere" attitude. Would like to seem them go but not likely because the market seems to tolerate it. read more
