went in newsman's last Tuesday, spent over one hour in the hot greenhouse picking spring plantings. got to to cash register and was told that the credit card line was not working. I put everything back and was sorry for the cashier. I came back on the following Thursday and asked cash if credit card was working and got a thumbs up. I spent another hour, maybe longer in their hot greenhouse selecting and excited picking my plantings. I got to the cashier and was told that credit cards were not accepted. what's going on newsman's??? do you no longer accept credit cards and if not, why not put sign outside door going in stating so. I'm going to other greenhouses and not wasting my time with newmans. read more

Always my "go to" nursery in Santa Fe. Love the huge selection of plants and trees. They're always helpful answering questions/concerns and offering planting tips. I love the ladies at the checkout. Always happy and witty. They are the absolute best! TIP: In Spring one has to shop there early because so many people descend on that store for the start of Spring planting. read more

I moved from the east coast to Santa Fe 5 years ago and have always been a gardener. Needless to say I had to relearn everything all over and what it takes to be successful with gardening in the high desert. I have always found what I'm looking for at Newmans along with helpful customer service and advice. I've read the other reviews on here and having been in business for many years myself before retiring. You can't please everyone all of the time. And reviews only are telling one side of the story, so I take them for what they are. Newmans has a huge selection and their prices are very reasonable compared to some places who sell plants that aren't meant for this growing zone and surviving the harsh Santa Fe winters. Malcolm the owner is always on site and is more than willing to give you expert advice on planting, selection and care for your new plants. If it's too early in the year to plant something outside he will tell you that and it must be kept inside til warmer weather. As opposed to selling you something to just make the sell. We called ahead to see if they had statuary and were told they had "tons". We drove 40 minutes to get there to see effectively three statues. Maybe the fact they had 10 of each of the statues made it equal to tons of statues, but it was very sad. In addition, the plants available were not very inspiring and everything was just sort of sad. Would not go back. I'd like to say the service was good even if the stock wasn't, but we were very clear what we were looking for and were completely misled. read more

I went to Newmans Nursery (many years ago Evergreen)... I wanted to purchase a few rose bushes and preferred using a local business instead of a franchise. None of the roses were price marked. When I asked a woman behind the counter what they were priced at she actually said "welllll... if I knew that would make life easier on both of us". I was stunned for a second and then asked are they for sale? She adamantly stated yes! When I asked how can I find out she rolled her eyes and said NOTHING. This is one of my two favorite nurseries in Santa Fe. The other being Agua Fria Nursery. It's my go to place for organic mushroom, compost, and organic bark mulch. I also like the selection of various organic potting soil and soil amendments. Excellent seed selection. Pretty good perennial selection. Sometimes I find things I haven't seen elsewhere. The prices are generally excellent. I've gotten quite a number of large glazed planters here. The selection isn't as big as Jackalope but if you get there early in the season, I have found it to be very good and better prices than at Jackalope. Good selection of garden tools, and hoses. Good selection of bulbs seasonally. About five years ago I bought roughly 2 dozen fruit trees, and had them plant them. All survived. I don't know that the selection is as good now as it was then, but it was great back then. I've had excellent service from Malcolm, the owner, Tim and the ladies out front. Went in this morning and was struck by how hot it was in there. No air conditioning at all. The poor woman at the front looked miserable and her face was red from the heat. All she had was a small fan that was doing nothing but blowing the hot air around. The greenhouses were worse. No excuses for having a business in that condition. read more

Just purchased 7 trees (3 pinon, 1 Ariz. blue cypress, 1 flowering crab, 1 Colo. blue spruce, & 1 lacebark elm). Tree selection was easy, Malcolm assisted me and gave me great advice for tree care. I ordered trees on Friday - they planted them on Tuesday. I paid for delivery, planting and amending the soil. I have a one year warranty on all this. I am very happy. Glad to see they carry plant materials that are drought tolerant and also that they carry many plants that are endemic to the area. I will purchase future plants from them. P.s. Great nursery, excellent selection and well priced. Staff was extremely helpful and went out of their way to help me locate the plants I was looking for. All plants that I bought, 3 roses, 1 grape, 2 fruit bushes and some smaller flowering shrubs are thriving! The only place in town that grows their own perennial plants and shrubs and this means a lot when it comes to having the plants survive in this kind of hot climate at a high altitude. So many plants I've bought at other nurseries have failed within that critical first year, so go to Payne's South for your annuals and here for all the rest. A bit out of the way, but well worth it. Feel compelled to share a series of two very negative experiences with one of the staff at Newman's. Both times I was seeking advice on problems with plants in my gardens. I came equipped with photos to share in hopes of properly diagnosing the problem. The lady who offered to "help" both times is just a "one-trick pony". She kept harping on the importance of sufficient watering (Really! That would never have occurred to me!) and would not let go. I never even got to finish my question(s) or share photos. Today, I just got fed up and left. I will not be going back to Newman's, and hope other patrons do not have to suffer this boorish staff member. Perhaps this is a bigger issue than I realize, since the parking lot at Newman's was practically empty at 10:00 AM, and literally every other nursery I've visited in the past two weeks has bee totally swamped! read more

The plants are wonderful, but they sell roundup and other toxic chemicals that leach into ground water and poison the earth. Please stand up and do not sell these chemicals that lobbyists have fought to keep on your shelves . Monsanto falsifies data and is the scorge of the earth= They just want to make money at the expense of killing life. There are many wonderful natural remedies to weeds and pests w/o the poisons that will not kill off the dwindling bee population and cause cancer.Please spread wisdom not cheap fixes. read more

They sell ROUNDUP and other pesticides! Please Newman's, discontinue to sell toxic chemicals that kill pollinators and destroy the health of our soil, you are an independently owned nursery after all. I will take my business to the 2 nurseries in town which do not sell pesticides. read more

In my opinion this place is one of two places to go for yard and garden goods, the other being Plants Of The Southwest. I was reading the other reviews and I'd say that people need to realize that a place like Newman's has all kinds of products for all kinds of customers. And so yes, some things might seem wrong or bad to some, but the bottom line is that you have to also educate yourself a bit. The staff can only help you so much because they can't go to your place and see your situation or make sure that you take care of things properly. Yard and gardening success is a process of learning, with some huge fails and huge successes. Try and try again. Plants Of The Southwest specializes in climate-appropriate plants only, and there you can learn things that will allow you to grow plants that are a little more tricky here in the Southwest. Master some easy things, and THEN head to Neumans and load up on the amazing things they have --. ESPECIALLY the roses. And remember, gardening must start out as a quality exercise before it can turn into a quantity exercise. I've found the staff to be great, personally. Prices? You get what you pay for. Want something that's already covered in bugs or half-dead, buy at the big-boxes. read more

I bought over $1,000 of trees and vines from this nursery, and had their employees plant them for me. One of the trees I purchased was a Sycamore tree which looks diseased, with blotches all over the leaves. I took a picture of the leaves and showed it to the manager of the nursery, since they guarantee their products for 3 months. Instead of sending someone out to inspect our tree, he accused me of not watering it enough. So, in essence, they don't stand behind their guarantee. Not a good thing in a small community like ours. Decent prices and selection, but difficult to find what I am looking for and often hard to find help from someone who knows what is in stock. Went looking for a tree today and spent 30 minutes browsing through trees and shrubs trying to find tags with information on size and zone and price and found little of this information so I wrote up a list of tree names for those I could find tags for and went home and spent an hour on the internet looking them up to get the details I needed. But I probably won't go back as even with a few details found online I'm not sure if it is the right tree we need. I miss Santa Fe Greenhouses who tagged their plants so well and had many knowledgeable people to ask. read more

If you are looking for plants that are well suited to drought conditions and the high desert environment, sadly this is not a great place to shop for that. Condition of plants and service quality have declined significantly since Santa Fe Green Houses closed their Santa Fe location. While Agua Fria Nursery's service can be 'snarly', I trust the advice I receive their over Newman's. read more

This establishment does not understand that Santa Fe is a high desert environment and we are currently in a drought. They sold my neighbor an "organic fertilizer" for her Kentucky Blue grass with the primary ingredients of ground up chicken parts. Naturally, once the product was applied it smelled like a rotting dead animal and caused swarms of flies. After contacting them about this, they stated that my neighbor needed to just "water, water, water." The manufacturer recommends 1" of water once a week, which is the equivalent of 4 hours of watering a week. It has been over a week and it is so vile smelling that I cannot even go outside or open my windows. I might expect this from a big box store that does not understand our local climate, but it is absolutely unacceptable for a local store to think this type of product is appropriate. It is completely irresponsible that they sell anything in their store that requires "water, water, water" during a drought. read more
