I found this place while looking for kickboxing and was happy to learn they also offer Muay Thai classes as well. This is one of the only places that gives you boxing gloves when you sign up for a kickboxing package - I've been to other kickboxing places around Seattle and have always had to borrow their old stinky gloves. It was nice to get a new pair to keep and bring to future classes. I wasn't sure what to expect upon my first class but the instructors were all very helpful and friendly. I didn't feel uncomfortable at all during the hour long class. Don't be fooled into thinking a beginner class will be easy! I was sore for 3 days after my first class - they really work your whole body!

The AMA Bryant location is just behind University Village and has a good amount of parking spots if you plan on driving. It's more on the intimate side, with a lobby, two workout rooms, two bathrooms, and some storage/office spaces. Try wearing flip-flops if you come because you'll be barefoot and the mats are a tad sweaty and grimey. Now... I cannot say enough good things about the staff here! I usually take classes with Lauren on the evenings and she is just 100% badass. Srsly, she looks like someone straight out of a video game. Support staff like Anna and the receptionist who works Thursday nights (bummed I can't remember her name) are so, so friendly and really take the time to help you get situated and working on the right moves: jabs, hooks, kicks, and combos. These guys are so fun and they always play good music to get everyone pumped. My only wish is for there to be some more consistency and bag-stand time in how the hour-class is structured but, regardless, it's still a great workout every time I go. While I don't expect to be a sucker punching vigilante by the end of my five classes, I'm certainly leaving with a greater awareness of how to move my body so that I can be my strongest self.

I have been training here for about 3 months now and here is my preliminary review…read more 1) Cleanliness - The mats are swept / mopped after classes. I have yet to think about the mats or my partner as anything less than spotless. The other students take pride in their school and keep it as well as themselves clean. 2) Size - This could be my only complaint. The classes attract a lot of people and if it were possible to expand another couple hundred square feet, it would be perfect. As it is, we'll bump into each other on an odd occasion - it's nothing that happens all the time. Just everyonce in a while when sweeping someone. 3) Instruction - Incredible!! Brian Johnson is a Machado Blackbelt under David Meyer & John Will. He has won multiple tournaments (including NAGA, ADCC & Grapplers Quest plus more) and he is the primary teacher for the basics & advanced classes. - One of the reason I chose to train at NWJJA was Brian's Curriculum and his willingness to show & explain it. Basic 24 (Which will soon be turning into the Basic 48) is a set curriculum that students must attend before going to the advanced classes - Giving everyone a base from which to build. - With his new curriculum it is focused into 4 separate days a week. Example: Mon = Guard Attacks I Tue = Guard Attacks II Wed = Guard Attacks III Thu = Guard Attacks IV. This way you are learning new things, but are drilling the same core concept for the whole week. And this is just the GI classes. NWJJA also offers NoGi classes as well as open mats & competition classes. NWJJA offers, what in my opinion, is a great way to learn. Consistantly building on the foundation in a progressive way. 4) Other Students - The atomosphere in NWJJA is relaxed and welcoming. Every single time I have made a mistake or had a question, they were there helping me and explaining how I should do things. I've read that in other schools, some people don't even try to remember names until someone has achieved their blue belt (About a year or 2). Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) has a high drop out rate. It ain't easy and belts aren't handed out as often as some other styles. As such you see a pretty tight group of blue belts and up, because a lot of white belts quit for their own reasons. This hasn't been my experience so far with NWJJA. Blue, Purple & Brown belts train regularly in the basics class and I have never felt ignored. That's my review so far! Also - beginning soon there will be a kids class as well.

The main difference between JHK and many other schools is that it teaches practical Taekwondo. Many…read moreschools focus primarily on the sporting aspect and stress speed over power and technique. This is great for scoring points in an olympic sparring match but fails miserably when called upon to defend yourself in a dark alley. JHK takes an analytical approach to the study of martial arts and teaches power and precision in addition to speed. Master Kim can claim a direct lineage to the early TKD masters, having been personally instructed by the founder of TKD, General Choi. I began my practice at JHK TKD in March of last year and feel like part of a family there. Classes are available several times per day, 6 days each week and my tuition allows me unlimited access. We're encouraged to treat the dojang as we would a second home, and I've always found the relaxed atmosphere to be welcoming and tolerant of all personalities, abilities, and walks of life. This is not your typical Kobra Kai, take-no-prisoners dojo, where muscular dudes walk around with their sleeves cut off. JHK is a place to lose some weight, learn to be good at something cool, and have a few laughs with new friends in the process.
