Excellent classes and friendly staff! I love this neighborhood studio - adequately sized with cubbies for your shoes and bags, and water available for purchase. I found this place while looking for kickboxing and was happy to learn they also offer Muay Thai classes as well. This is one of the only places that gives you boxing gloves when you sign up for a kickboxing package - I've been to other kickboxing places around Seattle and have always had to borrow their old stinky gloves. It was nice to get a new pair to keep and bring to future classes. I wasn't sure what to expect upon my first class but the instructors were all very helpful and friendly. I didn't feel uncomfortable at all during the hour long class. Don't be fooled into thinking a beginner class will be easy! I was sore for 3 days after my first class - they really work your whole body! read more

I've been wanting to try kickboxing for a while now, so when I saw Alpha Martial Art's $19 for five classes and a pair of gloves deal on Groupon I got on it like nobody's business. The AMA Bryant location is just behind University Village and has a good amount of parking spots if you plan on driving. It's more on the intimate side, with a lobby, two workout rooms, two bathrooms, and some storage/office spaces. Try wearing flip-flops if you come because you'll be barefoot and the mats are a tad sweaty and grimey. Now... I cannot say enough good things about the staff here! I usually take classes with Lauren on the evenings and she is just 100% badass. Srsly, she looks like someone straight out of a video game. Support staff like Anna and the receptionist who works Thursday nights (bummed I can't remember her name) are so, so friendly and really take the time to help you get situated and working on the right moves: jabs, hooks, kicks, and combos. These guys are so fun and they always play good music to get everyone pumped. My only wish is for there to be some more consistency and bag-stand time in how the hour-class is structured but, regardless, it's still a great workout every time I go. While I don't expect to be a sucker punching vigilante by the end of my five classes, I'm certainly leaving with a greater awareness of how to move my body so that I can be my strongest self. read more

We bought a trial karate membership for our 6 year old having no background in martial arts ourselves and wow were we in a for a fabulous surprise! The instructors here are truly incredible. The life lessons that they discuss at the beginning of each class are great for the adults listening too, and they are SO good with the kids. It's been astounding to watch over the course of a few months how a class of a bunch of little kids rolling around on the floor are patiently nudged into a group of aspiring students who are gaining precision with their body movements, gaining confidence, and have learned to be really respectful and helpful to one another all while having fun! I found this place through a friend who encouraged me to purchase a groupon 5 kickboxing classes for only $20! I am someone who NEVER works out and I was so scared coming to my first class! When signing up for your first class, be sure to call ahead of time so they know. On my first visit, they gave me gloves and toured me around the facility to show me around! It was extremely helpful! Being with a friend really helps AND the staff are so friendly! First off, you will feel like dying in the first 15 mins of class since they push you for intense warm up, but it preps you later on for the moves. Then Lauren, who is the main instructor, patiently teaches you each move. You'll have time to practice with a partner. There is no time to waste- they verbally encourage you to KEEP GOING even if it's tough!! Anna is super helpful and always checks up on me and make sure people are feeling comfortable! I feel embarrassed since I get tired easily and always have wrong moves but they are there to assist! Their positive attitude makes me want to come back again. Bought this class pass as a Groupon and had a BLAST! As a first timer they ensured I felt comfortable and really took the time to show my the proper technique. Great combination of age and gender and they made it challenging for everyone. It's not only a great workout but a great confidence booster knowing you now know how to throw a punch properly. I want to preface my review with that I bought the groupon for classes! As a note there are two separate mat areas, the one for kickboxing is in the back past the stairs! I enjoyed my first experience with kickboxing - the first half of class we worked on cardio with sets of jogging around the room interleaved every 5 minutes with sit-ups, squats, planks, etc. The instructors were both motivating and modeled each new sets moves. The second half of class we started jabs, hooks and gradually moved towards combining kicks and boxing moves! I was pouring with sweat and got a great cardio in. Been here for 4 years before moving to Cali recently, and I miss this gym an insane amount. When I first started coming here all the staff were super friendly and helpful, and the instructors provided great feedback for improvement. Everyone that comes here are so helpful, and overall the gym has such positive great vibes that always lifts my mood. *This review is solely for the Muay Thai Kickboxing class. I've been here about three times now-- enough times to make an adequate judgement about a place-- and I love it! While I've never been to a Martial Arts center or taken any classes like this before, I was pleasantly surprised about how great of a work out I got, while having fun. I left feeling refreshed and "kick-ass" but also exhausted. This place is clean, the instructors are friendly and helpful (they actually walk around the whole room and corrects/encourages everyone), and the kickboxing moves are not that difficult for me being that I don't normally kick and punch things. I started going because of the Groupon and a lot of people got the same idea, so the class sizes are significantly larger than they were on my first day. I go various times throughout the week and they are always pretty full. It sucks because then we don't get to kick the giant training bags, but you do get to partner up and practice kicking pads. It's okay as soon as you get through the weird "oh hi, you're a complete stranger" stage. So overall, I will definitely keep coming back even after my Groupon ends. read more

recently purchased a groupon for kickboxxing class and decided to try this place out. The staff is pretty nice and Kristin is a great teacher. Would been better if they have limitation on class size. My first class was awesome because there were only three people. Although I was kinda scared with the thought "is this place pretty bad therefore no one goes here?", the core of my first class was great. Me and the other two girls had a lot of personal comments from Kristin. We were each hitting our own stand up puncher (not sure what's the actual name for that thingy, lol) My second class was a lot different, there were so many people, some are professional, with muay thai practices, and some are just like me, going there for kickboxing fitness. during warm up, some students have to stand to the edge of the mat, where we enter. Therefore space were limited for each student for their movement. Since they offer online signup for each class, I think it would be better if they have seat limitation, such as only 20-25 student max could sign up for the class. read more

Love this place! I originally signed up via ILoveKickboxing's Groupon. After my 3rd or 4th class I took the plunge and bought a year membership for unlimited classes. I go to about 4-5 classes a week here. There are 3-4 different instructors teaching Kickboxing. I love that as they each bring something different to the table each workout so you never feel bored or like what you are doing is getting old. Also everyone is SUPER friendly and encouraging. Do not feel like because you have never done anything like this before or did not come with a friend you will feel left out or out of place. Everyone encourages everyone to try their best and push your limits, some of the most supportive people I have had the pleasure of meeting. I've already lost a half inch off each thigh in 2 weeks of going 4-5 times a week. I have been making a conscious effort also to eat healthy but nothing dramatic. Also nice that the Uvillage is right around the corner so you can grab a jamba juice or evolution fresh drink after a tough workout. The only bummer would be unless you love it enough to commit in the long term buying individual classes can get really pricey. I plan to work my way up to Muay Thai so its worth it for me to buy a membership. Definitely buy the 10-class groupon if you can... its a STEAL!! read more

At first glance, this place looks a little sketch....maybe it's because of the ghetto yellow sign in the front, or because the classes are held in a basement, or when you look in the window there's a man with no shirt on and then you realize it's a dummy...nonetheless, this place offers an awesome kick boxing class!! I've been going for a month now and have decided that it is one of the best cardio workouts I've ever done, and I've tried a lot of things in my day. Not only does it get my heart racing, but it's a lot of fun and 45 minutes goes by in a flash. The instructor is super cute, full of energy, can definitely kick some ass, and she is able to mix technical skill with fun obstacle courses etc. to spice things up. The class usually has around 8 -10 people, all who are at different fitness levels and ages, but yet each person is still challenged. The best thing is that the first class is free!!! I recommend that everyone give it a try - you'd be surprised at how much stress and angst is expelled. I really like ending my day by kicking and punching as hard and as fast as I can....I just imagine all the exasberating situations of the day or how frustrating relationships can be and then I feel at peace. My one complaint is that the class is from 8:15pm-9pm and I am usually wide awake for another hour and a half which makes it hard to wake up in the mornings. One time I even went for a jog around Green Lake afterwards because I had so much energy. Anyway, it's definitely worth checking out - but beware - you will probably get hooked! read more

The staff is soooo friendly! I cannot stress this enough. I just started taking kickboxing lessons here through the Groupon app, and I have already fallen in love with their classes. Whenever you enter, the staff greets you personally with a huge smile and says your name. It's amazing how they remember everyone's names, but it really adds to the intimacy. As for the coaching, I haven't ever taken a boxing lesson before so I can't remark on the instruction, but it works for me. They attend to each person and correct you if your formation is incorrect, but they do it in a constructive way. We recently enrolled our five years old here after reading positive reviews and I'm really happy with Alpha Martial Arts. I love that they encourage positive teamwork and incorporate great moral lessons into the class (homework included!). We started at AMA with our eldest kid about three years ago. It was a vastly better experience than his previous karate dojo, and now his brother and two cousins are also attending. The staff is great, from the top guy (Chris Herrman) to the young black belt volunteers who help with events. I bought the Groupon for two months of Crossfit. I've done Crossfit for two years and been to several other gyms. This is not the biggest gym or the most competitive - things I like about it. The coaching is solid and, most importantly, the people are nice and supportive and a lot of fun. It has a good feel to it. ... I hear Deliverance nearby is a super solid gym. Bigger, more hours, more competitive, and perhaps better for newbies (perhaps not). But as far as Crossfit gyms go, and as far as Groupons go, this is a good find. And they are as cheap as you can find for Crossfit in Seattle withouth the Groupon at $125. read more

I started working out here about a month ago, needing a place to get in shape and hopefully revive some kickboxing ability. AMA is a great gym with nice workout spaces, plenty of equipment and good instructors. Definitely recommend it. The beginner's Muay Thai, which I've attended so far, is a very solid MT workout. The instructors are great at pushing the class through a full-body workout while drilling for technique. There is often good quality skills training as well, with everything demonstrated and explained. Sometimes they break out standing heavy bags so you can develop your power and work on your elbow and knee strikes. On top of that, the other students are cool people and the training atmosphere is fun and focused. There's an intermediate/advanced class right after the beginner's, looking forward to being able to handle them back-to-back one of these weeks! read more

This is a great family martial arts school that has something for all ages. My husband started attending in 2005 with our son so they could practice together but eventually all four of us started attending. It was good for all of us. My husband and I have continued to attend for strength, flexibility, hand-eye coordination, balance and over all health and in fact just recently earned our black belts (and we're in our 40s) ! We have recommended it to many of our friends and they've come and stayed too. The instructors don't yell at you but they do expect you to do your best. A great martial arts experience for kids, 5ish up through high school. (And adults too). Working towards a junior black belt can be an experience of self-confidence, control, and discipline that's hard to find anywhere. Chris Hermann, who owns the school and leads classes, inspires discipline, hard work, individual effort, and values that help kids in all aspects of their life. Classes are challenging but non-competitive - each child is working on improving their own effort and reaching their own goals. The school also requires things like the Powerful Words homework in order to impress positive values on the participants. All in an atmosphere of fun, encouragement, channeling energy and aggression in positive way. Chris encourages the kids to be positive members of their community, by modeling community involvement (they host free stranger-danger classes, participate in the Furry 5-K and the Big Climb as well as other charitible activities). For young kids the two-day-a-week commitment can be a lot, but it's worth it. And for middle and high school kids who want to take that extra academic or music class, two classes plus qualifies for a year-round PE waiver in public school. We have had our five year old son enrolled at Alpha Martial Arts in their Little Dragons program for six months. The instructors are extremely good with this age group. They are positive, fun and encouraging while having a firm presence with the kids. My son has learned lots of karate skills as well as practice in group behavior and following directions in general. There is also a short discussion in every class and a word of the month such as 'courage' or 'self-reliance' that is discussed in an age-appropriate way with an optional homework assignment to help students transfer the learning to their home lives. The cost was a little daunting, but it has really been worth the investment and a great experience for our little guy. read more

I can't recommend Alpha Martial Arts highly enough. My 11 year old son got his black belt there and learned a whole bunch of valuable life lessons in the process. He is maturing into a fine young man, thanks in large part to AMA. Their monthly exploration of "powerful words" (like citizenship, integrity...) really helps put the learning of the technical side of kenpo into context for malleable young minds. I got as far as green belt before we relocated to California. I really miss Alpha Martial Arts, they will be a very hard act to follow. Owner Mr Hermann is a fantastic teacher and a perfect role model for my son, as are all of the instructors. Shout-outs for instructors Mr Chris, Mr Nick and Ms Alison. Great teachers all. Kickboxing is awesome and Belle's classes are fun. Got a great deal for 10 classes on Groupon. So far I'm enjoying the classes. Lots of different moves and variety means you're never going to get bored and stay challenged. I get a good sweat going and feel mentally stimulated. Since I'm new, it's hard to remember the order of moves when she tells us what combination punches/kicks to do, but I like that she goes around the room and helps correct anything I'm not doing quite right. My favorite parts of the class is throwing lots of punches and kicks in a row! But the other side that involves memorizing moves and the order of moves can be especially challenging when I'm tired, but I feel stretching your mind and keeping it active along with your body is a good thing. I think everyone should give this a shot, it's a very well-rounded workout in just an hour. She also has us team up with a partner for a portion, which adds some excitement, especially since if you didn't bring a friend you'll be throwing punches at a complete stranger (while they're wearing mitts, of course). Only in town for a few weeks, but picked up their Groupon offer for my 6 yr old. Have to say the "Main" studio was very difficult to work with (left constant messages, they didn't return phone calls, when they did, not flexible at all) but when I arrived at the capital hill location, the teacher there was AMAZING! He was able to accommodate our crazy schedule so my 6yr old was able to attend as many classes as possible. Moreover, his classes were great, and my son learned so much in such a small amount of time. The teacher (Mr. Ness) was so patient with all these hyper kids, but not a push-over. He had the complete respect of the kids (yes Sir, no Sir) but they still had fun and learned the material. My son will definately continue because of this excellent introductory experience! He even was given a uniform on his 1st day which he can keep - which was so cool for my son! HIGHLY recommend Mr Ness at the Capital Hill location - you will not be sorry!!! read more

Alpha Martial Arts is a great place for kids to learn martial arts in a friendly, encouraging environment. They're good at what they do, both in karate and as teachers, and have a good combination of serious and supportive. Our son and daughter are learning karate there, ages 13 and 10, and they both like it a lot. The normal progression is move ahead one belt level every three months (eg yellow, then advanced-yellow, then orange, then advanced-orange...) which gives the kids a nice sense of accomplishment and progression. read more

I just completed a wonderful 2 month kettlebell class with Dan Nelson at Alpha Martial Arts. The gym is a nice facility, with a friendly atmosphere, and the class was first rate. Dan is incredibly knowledgeable about exercise physiology, and led a fast-paced class while giving attention to the needs of each participant. I learned more in this class than I have in the last 3 years of using kettlebells, and I pushed myself harder than I have in a long time. I can't recommend this class highly enough! read more

This is a great place for the whole family to work out, have fun and learn karate. My family has been students here for the last three years. I think my favorite part of our experience has been the leadership experience my son has had. He will turn nine soon and for the last year had been teaching junior students. Before this experience he was often leading his fellow students but not always in a good direction. Through the support of his teen leaders and Mr Herrman, he now had become a role model inside and outside the studio.
