I had Air Care Services of Downers Grove out clean our dryer vents today. This was a community-wide service orchestrated by our property manager. Basically, call and reserve an appointment, if interested. As it had been several years, we decided that this was a good time to have it done. The price was reasonable and the workers were courteous and professional. I had a load of towels in the wash and put them in the dryer. Shortly thereafter the water leak detector in the laundry room (I have sensors by all water sources) alerted. No water but the humidity was extreme. When the humidity continued to climb, I became concerned. I checked the outdoor dryer vent and found no exhaust flow. Peering behind the dryer, I found the dryer vent hose wedged between the dryer & wall unconnected. I called the company and they arranged to have the techs come back out. As I was dissatisfied with the service I asked for consideration and was transferred to Bruce, the owner. I told Bruce I was not happy and outlined the incident. Bruce immediately went on the defensive and told me how I could condemn his techs, they had "done hundreds of jobs without incident". He continued in this vein, refusing to listen. I told him fine, I'm done and he continued to harangue me. I had to hang up to shut him up. Shortly thereafter, the techs returned and connected the vent. I checked the outside vent and they left. Shortly after that, my spouse came home and found the dryer firmly planted next to the dryer without any clearance. They may call themselves Air Care, but they flunk customer care. read more

We just bought a home and had the carpet removed and the (beautiful!) hardwood floors refinished. That created an awful lot of dust and we had no idea if or when the ducts had last been cleaned. We also thought it would be a good idea to have the dryer vent cleaned as well, especially considering that it's a potential fire hazard if it's not maintained. We were referred to Air Care Services by the company that has and will maintain our HVAC. The expert came out and in a few hours had cleaned all the ducts and the dryer vent. It's repulsive what was in those vents, but they are now clean and we will have the dryer vent and air ducts cleaned on a regular schedule that the professional suggested. (He also went above and beyond in showing me that the dryer was being vented out a basement window in a window well, but the window well had been completely covered, which was dangerous and could also cause mold. They failed to unplug my drier before servicing as the warning label states must be done which resulted in a fire, luckily there was a fire extinguisher close by so the fire did not get out of control and no one was hurt but by drier was destroyed. I had Air Care come out to clean my air ducts for my furnace, and while they were here I had them clean the dryer vent. They are licensed and insured, and thought I would try them out. I have to say, I am completely satisfied with the job they did. Even though it is a dirty job, not a speck of dust escaped their vacuum with hepa filters. When they removed the vent covers (which they individually washed) it exposed how incredibly dirty the ducts were, makes me wonder how people survive breathing in all of this stuff. I am hoping my allergy symptoms abate. The big surprise was the dryer vent, I am blown away at the lint that almost totally blocked the flow. A complete fire hazard. After reading the reviews, I'm a little disappointed. That said, I'm not sure that the service is bad, but it wasn't perfect. I called and was able to get an appointment the next day. That's sometimes worrisome, but I can say that it probably isn't exactly peak season for them right now. This is one of those things that has been nagging me to get done. Anyway, the lady on the phone was informative and took all the information, quoting me a price and giving me the Yelp discount. The tech (Luis) showed up on time, did the walk through and told me what he was going to do. I have an old house and he noticed an asbestos duct that I was not aware of. He would vacuum it, but not brush it. Then he got out the equipment and went to work. This house has crappy ductwork and it is old and not an optimal system compared to more modern ducts. He did his thing and I could hear stuff going outside to the vacuum. He had a variety of brushes, a shop-vac, and even a leaf blower (now there's a weird sound to hear INSIDE your house!). It took him longer than he expected. He closed up all the openings in the ducts, replaced all the vents (after cleaning them), gave me paperwork to sign and was gone. The gaps in the service were: 1) he left behind a brush. I called to let them know, but it was still on my porch this morning; 2) I found one spot where he had cleaned out a lot of debris and he didn't vacuum up the stuff that fell out of the duct -- not just a few bits, either; 3) he never took me back around to the ducts to show me the difference. I checked on my own, but it would have been nice to have him show me. There were no upcharges or add-ons outside of a dryer vent cleaning, which I knew about on the phone. Is there a difference? Hard to say. I know the ducts are clean and I just cleaned the furnace filters. The main thing for me was simply to get the crud out. They did that successfully, with a minimum of hassle. read more

Ok, they are out of the running, I went back to Angie's List and Yelp, both recommend Air Care Services Inc, in Lisle. People do your homework, just a little investigating can save you thousands, plus the aggravation of dealing with bad people. Air Care did a great job for me! It went GREAT, showed up on time, explained to me what he was going to do, how long it would take and got right to work. I couldn't believe how much dirt was in the vent's! My fiancé and I recently purchased a second floor condo which was built in the 80's. The previous owners had a cat, which we're both allergic to. And our brand new dryer wasn't drying at all. Between the two, we knew we had to get the vents cleaned for the sake of our allergies, and the dryer vent was a must. I did some research, and was tempted to get those groupon deals for the vent cleanings... However, after reading reviews and doing some homework, we opted out for these guys. $369 is a lot of money, but for a job like this, we didn't mind. The two guys arrived exactly on time, wore shoe covers, hauled all their things up the stairs, told me it would be about 1.5 hours (which it was) for the whole job, and got to work right away. When it came to the dryer vent, I was told there wasn't a lot coming out from the wall, so he would have to go in the attic to check it out. Apparently that's where the issue was. The guy told me that because of the age of the building, the pipes being used have coils instead of being smooth, so a majority of the stuff collects further up top. Then he said that the unit below us has a bathroom vent that comes into our attic... that had disconnected itself, which he reattached... so if they get their vents cleaned, the people cleaning will have to enter our attic. I was asked if we wanted our vent covers washed, but we're replacing all of them, so I declined. In regards to people mentioning how clean the place was after the guys did their work... I couldn't tell ya. We're in the middle of painting and fixing things up, so the whole place is a mess. But nothing seemed dirtier... Not that you could make that 80s cat hair covered carpet any worse. They also reattached our dryer and turned the gas for it back on. Then had me sign the paperwork, took their check, and were on their way. We'll see them again next year for another dryer vent cleaning. Great company. read more

My apartment complex hired this company to clean our dryer vents out this past Saturday. This morning they called me and told me that I hadn't paid for their services and I owe them money. I told them that I had a receipt for their services sitting right in front of me. She (the office manager?)continued to insist that the company wasn't paid. I ended the phone call and (possibly) the office manager called back and told me that they did, in fact, get my payment for their services but one of the team members lost the check and that they needed another one. These guys were great.. showed up early, which i guess is better than late. Took them about 2.5hrs for 2k sq foot house. I can't remember their names, but were very professional. The head tech Actually was able to figure why i wasn't getting a lot of pressure in my upstairs compared to 1st level. Had a partially closed damper in my trunk. They were very clean, as he disconnected the vacuum from trunk he vacuumed up the area all around. Will be giving these guys a call again in 5yrs or so once ready to be cleaned again. they soaked and cleaned all the vent covers.. i can actually smell fresh clean smell in my room as i'm typing this. I got a mailing few weeks ago to clean all my ducts for $79 that's what triggered the idea, i was like not bad cheaper than i thought but i did some research and quickly realized it was scam. My house has never had the air ducts cleaned before. The dryer vent was very badly blocked which made the dryer work harder and less effeciantly plus could be a fire hazzard. These guys are terrible. In fact, probably all of these so called "HVAC cleaning specialists" are quacks, at best. I tried to get my money back (Bruce refused) and filed a complaint with NADCA, but there are far too many hoops to jump through to ever have a chance. Bruce also threatened me with a mechanics lean (I initially stopped payment on the check), but I ponied up because I don't want the hassle. Anyway, these are the points that I had sent to NADCA. Bruce didn't think that any of these points were valid for a refund. Above all, I was extremely dissatisfied with the places that his "technician" decided to make holes in my ductwork. 1) The technician began by explaining that he will be cutting holes into the air ducts, but did not specify with any certainty where the holes would be. We went into the basement and I showed him where my existing vents were. I asked if he could use the existing return vent and he said maybe. We didn't discuss where the other hole would go on the main vent (off the furnace) until he was right about to cut it. 2) I went upstairs briefly, and then watched the technician bring in his tools and 8 inch diameter vacuum hose. The vacuum hose looked like it had taken some abuse over the years as it had been duct taped (patched) in multiple areas. It's not clear to me if there were air leaks in this vacuum, and that made me skeptical. The vacuum machine outside seemed to function ok, but it's worth noting that it appeared to be an older piece of machinery. 3) When I returned to the basement, he immediately began cutting into the return vent. As he was cutting, he explained that he thought this was the best place to do it. Why the return vent that was one foot away wasn't used, I don't know. 4) After the initial cut was made to the return vent, he made his way to the main duct that comes off the furnace (plenum). This is probably the most expensive piece of duct work in my HVAC system. He explained that he thought this was the best place to make the cut. I permitted the cut, reluctantly. Just to give everyone an idea, I was quoted $325 for replacing this piece by an HVAC specialist in my area. 5) 7 other 4 inch diameter cuts were made in my HVAC duct work. 6) cuts were made using a hand metal cutter (snips) and were not precision cut. Cuts were not a perfect circle, and had jagged edges. 7) Technician used a rotational brush attached to a portable drill to break up the dust from the vent. This seems practical, except that the rotating speed seemed sub-optimal. I would expect that a power-whip would be used, but Bruce isn't fond of this because he says it's only used in commercial applications. Personally, I don't buy that. 8) Technician used a leaf blower (Gator was the brand) to push dust down toward the vacuum hose that he placed at one of the 8 inch holes at the furnace. This is a low tech tool that should, I would think, not be used as an appropriate cleaning method. 9) Technician closed all holes with a steel plate and screws, and taped around these areas with aluminum tape. My HVAC specialist says that they typically don't use aluminum tape to make repairs because it looks tacky and is not a good permanent solution. It is not a good permanent solution because at some point, it will have leaks. Bruce says that the patch work is better than what was there originally. I'm not a genius, but I'm pretty sure if you cut a hole in ductwork and patch it, that patch is not as good as before the hole was made. Common sense, right? 10) After the work was performed, I asked to see the dust and debris that was collected by the 8" vacuum. He showed me what he had sucked up with his shop vac. I again asked to see what was collected by the 8" vacuum. The Technician explained that it was a lot, but that I wouldn't be able to know how much because another customer's dust was sitting in the collection canister outside. This seemed to be in direct violation of procedural guidelines as another customer's dust can potentially contaminate my ductwork. If you express your displeasure with Bruce, he will not work with you and you will not get your money back. His technician doesn't speak very good English, so if you use these clowns make sure you communicate everything up front. Personally, I would stay far, far away from these guys. Booking an appointment was easy, the gentleman that cleaned the ducts was nice but very soft spoken and didn't really give me a lot of info. He seemed to work hard and cleaned up nicely. He missed one vent and when I told him he had to get the stuff out and clean that one before he left, didn't seem too upset with me ;) I just wish he had pulled me aside to show me some before and after views (maybe photos?) of the vents. I did not ask to do this, not did I really ask the guy any questions, so I can't fault the company. I can't tell much of an improvement with allergies or anything, but we try to get the ducts done every 1-2 years. It was pretty pricey, so I might look at another company next time. read more

I had my ducts cleaned on Friday, after suffering with asthma and allergy problems in my new-to-me home. What a great group of people to work with! The woman who answered my phone call was pleasant and efficient. I was especially pleased that they sent two people for the cleaning; it took less than two hours and the guys were so respectful of my space. They wore shoe covers, removed and replaced the door to my utility room, and cleaned EVERY part of the system. I have an 1800 sq ft townhouse and it only cost me $309 (which included a $50 discount, courtesy of Yelp). Sure enough, it's Monday and I'm feeling 10 times better already. Recently (August 2010) I needed to have my furnance vents cleaned because a plumbing contractor I had hired to do some work in my basement failed to cover my furnance. When this contractor cut the cement floor in my basement, MY ENTIRE HOUSE was covered in cement dust (very very fine particles) even though my furnance was not on. I CALLED AIR CARE SERVICES, INC. TO CLEAN MY VENTS AND FURNANCE. IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I HAVE BEEN THIS HAPPY AND SATISIFIED WITH A COMPANY THAT HAS DONE WORK IN MY HOUSE. My furnance company referred me to Air Care Services. Eddy from AIR CARE SERVICES, INC. came and listened to my concerns before he started and explained exactly how he was going to clean up my vents. He paid particular attention to removing my vent covers so as to not ruin the 1 year old paint job. He protected my hardwood floor with a drop cloth and went to work. He was friendly and respectful and explained what he was doing as he went along. At one point he showed me a pile of dust and hair that he had pulled out by hand and I could not believe what was in this small section of vent. He even found a old baby tee shirt that somehow got into the vents (since I don't have any children it must have been from the previous owners, who also had a dog). I have seen the coupon offers for other vent cleaners offering to do the cleaning for under $100. But after talking to friends who have had these cheep cleanings done and been unsatisified I know I made the right decision to use AIR CARE SERVICES, INC. I first want to say Air Care service is the best at what they do. They charge me $325.00 for my complete system. I have absolutly noticed a difference in the air quality after they were done. What I also appreciated they didn't try to up sell me with that said I am going to tell a horror story about what happened to my friend and another company. There are lots of people advertising duct cleaning for cheap prices. My friend who called a company out of the paper that was advertising 75.00 per furnace unlimited vents. After the two men were in their house for about 1/2 hour they told my friend they recommended a deep cleaning on the furnace and to sanitize the duct work and it will cost an additional $559.00. First off I had been living in the house for about 18 years and have never had the ducts cleaned. I had gone thru a lot of construction in those years and started to have upper respiratory problems along with my B/F. After seeing a Doctor and being told it could have a lot to do with dust and possible mold I had decided to have the ducts cleaned. There are a lot of companies around that clean ducts but was referred to Air Care Services from a friend in the heating and air business and decided to give them a call. After talking to the owner Bruce I had an appointment for the next week at 9:00 AM. the day arrived and I had noticed the worker Alex was sitting outside of my House at 8:30 waiting for the 9:00 AM time to start. He started at about 8:45 AM and by Noon he was finished and on his way out. As far as the Cleaning, I have to say it was one of the best experiences I have ever had with a service provider. Alex was awesome to not only talk to but watch him do his thing. He did take before and after pics along with myself and WOW what a difference. After 18 years of Construction and who knows what else from the previous owners needless to say the Ducts were nasty when he started. When he was done you could literally eat out of them thats how clean they were. Alex was very professional and polite thru out the whole process. I hired Air Care Services to clean my dryer vent and clean the ducts in my house. The Company was prompt, and Eddy, the serviceman was clean and tidy. He started with the ducts, cleaned all the vents and the intake vent, vacuumed all the vents. Then he duct taped a big hose onto one of my vents and used a leaf blower in all the other vents to blow the dust and stuff towards the hose. He did attach about 8 feet onto a brush and brushed the vents too. I'm not sure if they are suppose to go further or not. Then he worked on my dryer vent. He started by vacuuming the area around the vent and then used a brush to go as far up as he could. He went onto the roof and noticed that there was a very fine screen that was around the dryer vent on the roof and said that it was filled with lint and cat hair, He said that the screen that was on there was way to fine, like a window screen that trapped all the lint making it impossible for anything to get through there. He removed the screen, cleaned it up. He did not replace the screen, but said a screen was not needed. I asked if birds or anything could get in there and he said no, not to worry about having a screen on there. Eddy then cleaned up everything. He left no mess at all. I'm happy with the services provided. I only wished I could have seen how much stuff they actually vacuumed out of the duct work. read more
