In our effort to systematically knock out the entire list of establishments on the Ohio Ice Cream Trail, this was next (or more accurately, it was the most convenient place on the list we had yet to visit). And it turned out to be a terrific little spot in Vandalia. It's funny because it has been around since 1964, meaning that it's almost as old as we are. We grew up in the general area and we had never heard of it, let alone tried it. The decor was simple with a decent number of seats. It was set up to order from the counter. The gentleman serving us was friendly and quite pleasant. The ice cream flavors were limited, but that was fine for our granddaughter, who had a vanilla-chocolate twist in a cup with a cone "hat". My wife and I split a Banana Pudding Cyclone, which was like a Flurry. It was terrifically flavorful. We were pretty happy with our experience. It reminded us of the type of place we would have gone as kids. With tasty treats and good service, it is a place worthy of a return visit. read more

I'm here with my wife & mother-in-law visiting family and in our travels stopped at Air line Dairy Crème for lunch. This is a throwback to the 60's & 70's when my wife came here with her folks as a child. The food is your drive-in style place with hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, fries & shakes. I had the hamburger and my wife & mother-in-law each had the foot long coney with chili, cheese & onions along with fries and shakes. All was tasty and brought back that yesteryear type feeling. The staff was friendly & efficient in getting the food prepared quickly and correctly. The setting as I mentioned earlier is a throwback with Formica tables & seats. Very clean! relearning how to swallow from an almost fatal brain surgery. I can only use marshmallow with things because of the consistency, or else it goes into my lungs. "How are they supposed to know that?" They aren't. Being kind is free. Went in yesterday and ordered vanilla ice cream with marshmallow top, and butterscotch (with the nacho chips) We were the first orders in there, but we were the last served. We did nothing and kept getting dirty looks and glares. Honestly sad. Worst experience I've had there, and after how they made me feel? It's the last experience. They gave me a cup with half melted vanilla ice cream in it, brown sugar, and some sort of syrup. First time I've gone anywhere in public because this seems like a reoccurring thing..... next generation is just so brain dead. How hard is it to make ice cream? Horrible work ethic follows you.. an ice cream shop doesn't seem like a solid job but it's all in the experience. Not treating it like a job will cost you in the long run.. I grew up not too far from here and pretty much every small town had some sort of Dairy Queen type bar. Many were originally DQs but refused to make the changes and branched off on their own. Others like this one, were always their own little brand. The one in my hometown was tiny, and only open in the summer. This place happens to be just down the street from where I live, and I'm always searching for something that tastes like that specific chocolate malt I crave. I have never found it... until now. Big bonuses about the Airline Dairy Creme: They have indoor seating and don't close down for the winter/fall season. It's very clean and well lit. They take credit/debit cards now. Food wise it's pretty standard dairy bar/stand fare. French fries, onion rings, hot dogs and square hamburgers with american cheese. Good chilli dogs. Excellent pork tenderloin sandwiches. Everything is dirt cheap, like I can over eat significantly and not even break $10. It can be rather busy in the summer, so don't be surprised to find whole baseball teams after games lined up for ice cream sundaes and hot dogs. The staff is friendly, young, and quick to churn things out if there's a line. I highly recommend a stop here even if it isn't for nostalgic reasons. Delish soft serve! They only have 2 flavors (vanilla and chocolate) and 1 flavor of the day. When we visited it was cream de mint, which was mighty tasty. There is indoor seating with an indoor counter and and walk-up outside window. I wish they would have a few outdoor benches or seats as well but you can always sit in your car and devour your cone there!
