We had fifteen minutes to kill before a play at the Ruskin Group Theatre and decided to spend them at Airport Park. Our initial plan had been to bring sandwiches, but I'm glad we changed course. It was a hot day, and while there were plenty of tables, they were all empty and completely exposed to the sun. It's possible there was a shadier picnic area elsewhere in the park, which sits on over 8 acres, but I didn't see one. I guess Santa Monicans aren't used to immoderate heat because the park was basically deserted on a Sunday afternoon. Not one child in that nice-looking playground. We walked around for a bit and found a reasonably shaded bench to relax on before heading back to our car. I'm gathering now that Airport Park gets heavy use as a dog park, but I didn't see enough dogs or humans to get the picture when we were there. We had a pleasant enough time in any case, and I'd be curious to see the place on a more normal day. read more

Nice decently sized dog park near the Santa Monica Airport. Wood chips/mulch..which is better than dirt IMO. Small dogs are separated from big dogs. The big dog area has good space for the big dogs to run around. Parking has always been easy every time I went. There is a small grassy area, if you want to completely skip the dog park. read more

Discriminatory. I've bee coming to this park for months. Rarely on weekends. Today Sunday 1/11/26, I was stopped by more than three people who looked scared to death that a 40 lb puppy would be on the big side. One woman pushed on the gate and said "is that a pit bull!??" - my dog is not. Medium size don't go here or you'll meet a mob of Karens. read more

I really want to like this dog park- the people are for the most part friendly and keep a watchful eye on their pups... The mulch and wood chips are not ideal as they hide broken rubber ball parts, poop and other yucky things...my dog has a tendency to try to eat the mulch, pieces of balls, and has thrown up recently a couple of rubber pieces... I will likely stick to glen alla dog park or similar (Astro turf, grass, concrete) or even just regular walks where there won't be such an ample supply of broken toys... read more

Fenced in dog park that separates small dogs from big dogs. The big dog park is made up of three hills and no large runway for them to race around. The ground is made up of wood chips so the dogs don't get dirty but I can't imagine wood chips being comfortable or easy to grip when your pup's soft paws try to gain traction. First time today, loved this dog park. Owners very friendly, dogs very well-behaved. Two separate sections for large and small dogs. Santa Monica Animal Control said they are required to respond to persons who call in, so it's suggested you get a City of Santa Monica dog license so you can come to this park and not be levied a $300 fine. The license is $25 annually for non-residents - I had to get a Los Angeles County license before I could get a City of Santa Monica license. Don't bother calling either facility - no one answers the phone - it was faster to visit the facilities in-person with proof of rabies vaxx and micro-chip. You can pay on the spot, get your receipt and you're done. read more

If you're looking to come shoot around here, DO NOT COME HERE I don't quite understand the point of building a whole soccer field, for it to not be used by the public. You need a permit to even get inside. Absolutely ridiculous. There was a worker of the city of Santa Monica sitting behind his desk to what it seems like overlooking the park. I get the whole trashing the field and the homeless as well, but it's just mind boggling that you need a permit to come shoot around. It's things like this that make the youth want to spend their time doing other useless things rather than knowing they have a public field to come and shoot around at. Amazing park! We came for the dog park, we loved that there is a separation for big and small dogs. There is ample space in the small dog section for your puppy to run around. There's about 3 benches in the small dog area available for seating. There is also an open grass area just outside the dog park in additional to a couple basketball courts. There is a provided parking lot and we had no issues finding parking Would recommend! read more

My friend went to this place before she was confused from the dark. There's few people and few dogs were playing and it nice than other park(I only went to dog park at Brooklyn or union square park in NY) small dogs and big dogs play separate and both was pretty big place for dogs can play. There is ample room for dogs to play and different areas so dogs can play in multiple different groups. Soft dirt with wood chips doesn't tear up my pups paws like some other dog parks have. read more

I try to take my dog here as often as possible. It's divided into two sides: big dogs and small dogs. My dog weighs about 14 pounds so we always stick to the small dog side. For the most part, the dogs on the small dog side are well behaved and the owners watch them closely. Luckily, my dog hasn't been in any fights or had any problems here. The one downside of this place is that it is all dirt and mulch so my dog comes home filthy, but at least she's had fun and had some exercise. Make sure to get your dog a dog license from the pound on Olympic and 10th if you're going to bring your dog here. It's $20 a year and they will ticket you if your dog doesn't have one (I believe it's around a $350 ticket or so). read more

We were super excited by the great reviews on this place so my husband took our little Yorkie here for some play time on a nice Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately we had a horrible experience! After less than 10 minutes of play time, cops showed up and started checked the tags on all the dogs for Santa Monica tags. The dogs, not knowing what was going on, excitedly approached the officers to greet them and allowed them to check their tags. Simultaneously, more cops were ticketing cars that didn't have certain stickers. Keep in mind that we saw absolutely NO warning signs whatsoever about dogs needing Santa Monica tags, or cars needing special stickers on them. If there had been appropriate signage indicating these rules, we probably would have thought twice about going here. Luckily for us, the officers had targeted the big dog section of the park first, so we were able to leave without our poor little pooch being issued a ticket for not having Santa Monica tags! Luckily our car did not get ticketed either. This was such an absurd experience that I felt compelled to warn others of these rules since they are NOT posted and you would otherwise not know them. Be warned that if you do not have the Santa Monica dog tag AND the parking sticker, you can get fined when the cops raid this park. It's really a shame since it is an otherwise nice dog park. How sad that such lame rules get in the way of what should be an enjoyable experience. read more

I hadn't been here in a few years after moving from the area, but after finding myself on the west side with my pups we decided to give it a shot. My youngest dog has never been to a dog park before, but she's does okay with other dogs after being in doggie day care during the week. The park was great! There were quite a few dogs in the small dog area and my girls had a blast playing with everyone. Owners seemed conscientious about keeping an eye on their dogs and were friendly. It's well maintained and there are trash cans, shovels and tennis balls for playing. I would bring some of my own next time. The large dog area is pretty size able, although there were less dogs there than in the small dog area. I would never consider coming to a dog park unless there were separated zones. Parking is ample in the free lot and the location is perfect on weekends when there is less airport activity. We'll be back again soon! read more

There's a huge lighted soccer field, a kids' playground, picnic tables galore...with grills, seating areas, grassy spaces....... It all has a state-of-the-art industrial look that fits the location perfectly. The space was in full use when I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. The dog park was quite impressive, and I like that it's hilly. I love to see and hear planes in the air, and see planes taking off nearby, that too is a plus. Another plus: two parking lots. If the one on Airport Drive is full, as it was the day I was there, just drive down to Donald Douglas Loop at the other end of the park and go up the hill to see a second big parking lot. I was on a mission to find the puppies a great dog park. Second dog park in two days, and I am pleased to say the mission is complete. Gargantuan park, with impeccable landscaping, perfectly situated benches, and a great area for dogs to play around. Another plus = FREE parking! Also and equally great, the park is composed of a large dog area and a small dog area, both fenced and separate. The small dog area was nearly as big as the large dog area, unlike the Barrington dog park. Although landscaped like most dog parks, dirt, mulch, trees, this park is maintained very well. The janitors clean the park every morning, and groom the mulch and dirt with rakes. Despite the dirt and slobber from the dogs, I didn't feel dirty whereas I normally do at other parks. What else . . . watering hole at the front gate, random tennis balls lying around, plenty of sticks to chew. I did read many reviews stating that dogwalkers frequent the area with many dogs and no additional support staff. Today, it was not like that. There were many dogs, more than humans, but the dogs never grew rambunctious. read more

I came here last weekend and my dog and I loved it! Friendly people, friendly dogs, amole running space, two sections for small and big dogs. One star off for dirt area instead of grass or fake grass because your dog will get dirty. I frequently this park 3-4 a week if not more. There are some good owners and some bad ones. This review is solely on the bad ones. My dog was attacked by another on 12-7-17 by a Jack Russell mix named Lily, older Casuasian female owner. Owner didn't even apologize. My dog is the sweetest tempered friendly 2-3 year old female. The other dog must be aggressive, terroritoral o or has issues. My dog was within 2 feet of me, minding her own business. Lily was 6-8 feet from her owner, who was sitting in wood fence. Nice dog park if you have a Santa Monica registered dog. My dog is registered and sports her SM tag, so we were a-OK. I'd been warned by others to not go to the park if I didn't live in SM, because people may say something. It's well maintained and everyone was nice. I've been taking my Husky/Shepherd mix, Aurora. here at least once a week for 3 months and every time we come there are always small dogs in the large dog area. Small do not belong with 40lbs + dogs, it's dangerous for them and more often dangerous for the larger dogs. Aurora has been attacked at this park 5 times now (3 times today) , usually by small, aggressive dogs. This evening my we took Aurora to the park around 6:30pm, we were there for maybe 10-15min and in that time the same dog attacked her 3 times and the dogs owner kicked her. Too often people bring their small or aggressive dogs and don't watch their dogs and don't take responsibility for their dogs attacking. I admit Aurora is very rambunctious and likes running​ in packs (Huskies are pack animals). If you are bringing your dog to a dog park to just play fetch with you make sure your dog isn't too aggressive, or learn to take responsibility. As a side note, people are often smoking cigarettes and cigars in the dog park and bringing their unaltered adult dogs into the park. We will not be bringing Aurora here again. I highly recommend the playa Vista park on bluff Creek drive, near where the street is closed, it's a bit smaller but people are more attentive and responsible. read more

My 1 year old ridgeback puppy loves coming here! Big enough space for him to run around and play with other dogs. Haven't encountered any issues like the other reviews. Yes it's all dirt, but anything containing grass or AstroTurf can spread giardia, so which would you rather have - a dirty dog you can give a bath or a sick dog full of parasites? I do not recommend the Playa Vista Park for that reason. My dog gets sick after every time I bring him there because owners do not realize their puppies contain the virus and neglect picking up the poop. Be warned! read more

We live directly across Bundy from the dog park. We are in the flight path from the Santa Monica Airport, hence we get to hear the screeching lull of jets landing, and the ever-so-calming jackhammer noise of the occasional blimp. This is not to mention the near-constant jet fuel smell in the air and the 3am planes that defy the noise pollution rules during any award season in LA. I get this, I live near an airport. HOWEVER. Since we are technically LA and not Santa Monica, I cannot use the dog park or I face a potential $300 ticket. Seriously? I have never heard of a park ticketing non-residents who dare to use the facilities, especially when those non-residents live ACROSS THE FRIGGIN STREET.. read more

Airport Park. It's where I take the office dog. If Charlie, the dog, could review this place.. It'd probably go something like this.. "Bark." - Charlie The Dog. Translation - "I like Airport Park because it's across the street from where we work. They have two sides, one for smaller dogs and one for bigger. Since I'm a small dog, I play on the smaller side. Yup. It's my place of interest, cause I'm a dog. This is a dog park, ya know. They even have posts with doggy clean up bags so you can clean up after me, it's the law!" *Charlie sniffs your bum You see! Charlie likes the park ..and you apparently. Me? I just go for a few to talk a little jibberish with fellow dog walkers and enthusiasts, observe a few people / dogs, let Charlie handle business then walk back. It's a good get away for about 15 minutes or so. The office I'm in doesn't feel like an office.. more like a dorm. So 90% of the time I'm running into fellow tenants within the building at this park. I think it's a great dog park!! One thing you have to know though is that your dog has to have a tag on the collar with the permit to be there. You can get it at the City-Santa Monica Animal Shelter. It is $20 per year. You can get it even if you DON'T live in Santa Monica as long as your dog is registered at the city of Los Angeles (another $20 per year). Your dog's rabies vaccination need to be up to date and it needs to be spayed. The animal control police comes by often, checking and they can give you a ticket if you don't have the permit so I recommend on getting one. read more

Just came back from Airport Dog Park this afternoon. They were laying down new mulch/woodchips on both sides. Smells like cedar! First time I've ever thought it smelled good at a dog park. It's really nice to see that Santa Monica takes good care of this dog park and it's little more than a year old. On a side note, I've been hearing a lot of more stories of dogs getting bit this summer. Maybe it's the heat or my extremely small sampling of the dog park goers, but make sure to keep a close eye on your dog if you're in the big dog side. Small dog side is almost always tame. read more

I really like this park, I come here a couple times a week. My dog is a tweener, not a big dog, not a small dog, so its nice that there are two different sides for big and small dogs. The big side obviously has more space, which is nice... but I'm not a big fan of the wood chips. For that reason sometimes I'll prefer the small dog side. What I like about this place is there's always a good amount of dogs, but its not too crowded. And there is a good group of dogs that go there. Rarely do I see serious scuffles that break out. This review is strictly for the dog park section of the Santa Monica Airport Park. As a resident of the Westside, this is where I take my dog if I want to get some quick exercise and fresh air for him. The park is divided into two sections, one for small pooches and one for large ones. My dog, who's about 25lbs, always goes to the small dog section since some of the large dogs in the other area are REALLY LARGE and a bit intimidating. I know, I should stop being so over protective, but there are some serious fights that can break out over in the large dog section! In both areas, there is plenty of space for dogs to run around as well as several small trees in case they just want to sit in the shade. There are also a few benches for the humans to use. Feel free to bring toys for your pooch but there are always plenty of tennis balls lying around if you just want to play fetch. Water fountains are provided on each side, and there's even ground level ones for dogs to drink straight from! As others have mentioned here already, the park has wood chips and dirt instead of grass. It doesn't bother us but I can see why others might prefer grass. For the most part, the dogs and their owners are friendly and clean up after themselves. Once in awhile, I'll see folks drop off their dogs in the park and then go off to picnic or play sports in the neighboring area. If you're thinking of doing this, PLEASE DON'T. Us other dog owners are not there to look after and dogsit for you while you go off! Parking: There is a lot right next to the dog park. If it's packed, which happens often during the summertime and weekends, try the lot further up Airport Avenue. Tags: Make sure your dog has a Santa Monica tag. Even if you're not a resident of Santa Monica, you can still use the park (go to the website for more info). Every year, I pay less than $20 to the Santa Monica animal shelter to get a tag for the airport park. Totally worth it in my opinion. read more

I took my two snobby chihuahuas here for the first time a week ago. At first I was hesitant that the planes would scare my tiny little babies. But to my surprise the planes were not a distraction at all. I love the layout of this dog park. With the dirt and wood chips in both the big and small parks it was easier to get my chichis in the gate. There is plenty of room for the dogs to roam no matter what the size. The only true draw back is the lack of grass, but most dog parks in these parts dont have grass. I plan on taking my anti-social babies back here. The location is right, there is plenty of space and I can soak up some rays at the same time. read more
