I recently started flying out of Newark only because I've been getting better airfare deals, lol. I was nervous about taking this airtrain because there were so many negative reviews on Yelp. However, now that I've used it a few times i really like the commute. It's very convenient from nj transit and you just scan your NJ transit ticket n walk through to get to the airtrain. The trains are tiny and outdated compared to NYC airtrain system. There are signs throughout that report trains come every three minutes. Ive never had a delay in waiting for a train. However, due to the lack of space, the trains pack up quickly especially since most people are traveling with luggage. The ride to the airport terminals are very short. There are some cool views of Newark and surrounding areas. There are staff available on the train platforms to help you if you have questions. This is definitely a mode of transportation I will continue to use whenever I'm flying in or out of Newark airport. read more

Finding my way through Philadelphia from Newark Liberty Airport via NJ Transit and Amtrak was met with the services of the AirTran - eWR's rail transit line that services commuters between the terminals A, B, C, and parking garages. All major airports have this kind of internal rail system, so to be here riding it to get to where I needed to go was pretty phenomenal. My time in Newark was brief as I traveled here on the weekend of 11/16/13. The AirTran took me to where the NJ Transit Trains and Amtrak were and that was great. The AirTran system is state of the art and fast. Quite reliable for the travelers in need of getting through the terminals in EWR airport and wherever they wish to go. What I love about this is that it is clean and looks relatively new. Possibly built within the last 20 years or so, modern improvements have given AirTran promise and excellence to serve the flying public and everyone else who works at the airport and the immediate community. The ride on AirTran was short and efficient, which is great. Sometimes it does get crowded, but that's alright though. Makes me happy that this internal rail system is here at EWR, just so that there isn't so much craziness that comes with traveling and safety. My travels took me from Terminal C to the amtrak and NJ transit, which I was required to use the AirTran. And of course, from Amtrak back to Terminal C for the return trip home. I probably don't think AirTran is required if you are going to the rental car area or ground transportation in either terminals A, B, or C. The ride on AirTran was as sleek and quiet as they come. No bumps or service disruptions this time and it took me to where I needed to go. The overall experience was good and average. The AirTrain is an excellent way to commute when leaving Newark Liberty International Airport to go into the city! Overall this public transportation is clean, useful, fast, and runs smooth. I recommend AirTrain for convenience :) However on my last trip to NYC, one of the trains were down so it took awhile to leave New York Penn Station. I was almost late to my flight when heading back to the airport because of the AirTrain problem, and in addition I got off at Newark Penn Station by mistake a stop before the Newark Airport.. so because I mixed it up and was running late I then had to cab it from Newark Penn Station to Newark International Airport. Some advice I would have is give yourself enough time in case one of the trains is down, because it backs everything up. :/ read more

The AirTrain is free to ride within the airport when you need to get from one terminal to another or to get to the parking garage. The price ($5.50) is included if you've bought an Amtrak or NJ Transit train ticket and headed to the Newark Liberty International Airport Station. Each "train" is a pretty small cube that holds about 6-8 people depending on the amount of luggage. When it's busy, people will pack inside like sardines. It's New Jersey so people will be pushy. If you're not in a hurry, just step aside and let those in a hurry go first. read more

I can't imagine how people who don't speak English well would navigate this. To get from Newark airport to Penn Station NYC, you have to buy a ticket that includes both legs. Scan the ticket labelled EWR to NYP at the turnstile. Keep the portion labelled NYP to EWR in a different place so that you don't confuse the two. The Airtrain will take 12 minutes to get from the terminal to next train on the tram. Have the EWR to NYP ticket handy in the event that the agent needs to check it. If the agent asks to see your ticket, make sure that you get it back. Next you will take a train from the outer reaches of the airport to Penn Station. Once at Penn Station, look for the MTA signs. This will get you on the metro/tube/underground to your final destination. Not the cleanest, nor the fastest, but it's a low-cost transportation option to NYC from Newark. read more

I really don't enjoy this experience. After the 10 minute train ride from Newark Penn to the Newark Airtrain stop on NJ Transit, you still need to plan for at least an additional 20 minutes of train travel if you're going to Terminal A. There are 8 stops total between the Transit stop, the 3 terminals and 4 parking lots. And from Newark Penn, it's $8.50 ($5 normally, $3.50 just to ride the Airtrain.) Definitely not my preferred mode of travel. If someone were driving me direct from Newark Penn to any of the terminals, it would only take 15-20 minutes total without traffic. read more

Bottom line: The Newark AirTrain is a solid, free transportation option to get around to other terminals, parking, and the NJT/Amtrak train station...when the regular schedule is running and all is working as intended. The recently instituted limited night schedule I have encountered is horrible and confusing at best, and turns a great EWR asset into a disappointing service not at peak efficiency. The Deets: The AirTrain operating at EWR Newark airport is a free "monorail" type of service that connects all the terminals as well as the parking deck area and the RailLink (the New Jersey Transit/Amtrak train station) together. It's not the actual train that takes you into NYC or other parts of NJ. I think this service is pretty good, like 4 stars, when running regularly such as during the daytime hours...it's a great way to get to the train station so you can get into New York City or other points in New Jersey and beyond by NJT or Amtrak trains. It's not perfect, but it's great and I was a big fan of it...that is until recently when I have encountered during the night time rides they have started some sort of limited service not using all trains and even more so, that you have to go to one destination then wait for another AirTrain to come and take you to another, etc. instead of directly linking you up like normal operation. It's an extremely frustrating type of limited service, and if you are looking to make a NJT/Amtrak train in a hurry during this type of limited running schedule, forget it. In fact, this past encounter with limited service at night had us boarding a bus to get to the train station to catch NJT/Amtrak trains. The communication about how this works is horrible, and everyone is confused and frustrated at best. Absolutely disappointing, and more like a 2 star type of service when this limited service is in effect (and it wasn't even 10pm yet). So averaging in a normal service type of operation with the recently encountered night limited service ones, it averages out to around 3 stars...and I feel that's being kind. read more

The train cars on this air train are so small. The air trains to JFK are far better. Plenty of room and well ventilated. In New Jersey The planners and decision makers should be investigated. We took the AirTrain from the train station to the airport. It was straight forward and simple. We had no issues getting on the train and getting to our terminal. The AirTrain runs every 5 minutes. We waited for the train and hopped on. It seemed a bit small compared to other airports, but we didn't have any issues. So, I won't hold it against them. The price of our NJ Transit ticket included the cost for the AirTrain so make sure you have your tickets! I just wish LAX had something like this available! LAX... take note! read more

I am not a fan. Just like its JFK counterpart, AirTrain Newark is nothing more than a shuttle that connects the train station to the different terminals and parking lots. Moreover, you don't have a choice: unless you get to Newark airport by taxi or private bus, you HAVE to take the AirTrain. There is no public shuttle bus alternative. And at $5.50 each way, it ain't cheap either. THE GOOD: Clean. One train every 4 minutes during peak time. THE BAD: Each car is divided up in small spaces that can host 6-8 people. It gets very cramped. The LED screen at the station that shows the arrivals and departures is half broken. As a result, it is really hard, if not impossible, to read the terminal (A, B, or C?), which could lead you to get off at the wrong terminal[1]. THE UGLY: On the way back from the airport, you have to purchase a ticket in order to be able to exit the AirTrain station. That's fine: same thing as AirTrain JFK. What you need to know is that, if you're planning to take a NJ Transit train, you MUST purchase that ticket before you exit the AirTrain station. You see, even though the ticketing machines inside and outside the AirTrain station look identical, the ones outside the station (which, by the way, are the ones closer to the actual train station) will allow you to purchase ONLY AirTrain tickets, but NOT NJ Transit tickets. If you don't have a train ticket once you exit the AirTrain station, you can either board the train and pay a fine, or ask the guy at the counter to please let you back inside the AirTrain. Once you are back inside, you can purchase a NJ Transit ticket, but you can ONLY buy it together with the AirTrain ticket; i.e. you would have to pay the AirTrain ticket twice[2]. It doesn't make any f*#%ing sense. Purchase AirTrain and NJ Transit ticket before you leave the AirTrain station, or purchase the NJ Transit ticket in advance. ------------------------------ [1] Not that this actually happened to me. The last few times I flew out of Newark I was able to park at work, take New Jersey Transit to the airport and then jump onto the Air Train. I'd never used it before,but I'm a big fan now. The stations/stops are clean and well lit, I've never experienced a non-working train, it's much faster than trying to park and then getting on the bus, and it's simply made my travels a lot less stressful. As a frequent commuter to newark airport I have have several years of experience with Newark's Airtrain service. Unfortunately, 95% of it is terrible! The obviously old, outdated and completely worn out cars offer spotty service year round. It also happens to be completely unable to function the instant a single snow flake hits the ground. I can not tell you how many times I've spent an hour or more stuck in one of these train cars (with the A/C on in mid December or the heat blasting in mid July mind you) trying to go from the terminals to the railink station. In fact I just got off another 40 minute surprise trip of bouncing between two terminals, causing me to miss three New Jersey Transit trains. It would honestly be faster (and probably safer than the decrepit old tracks the Airtrain runs on) to walk along the high way to get to newark penn station. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for their complete failure to properly upkeep and maintain what is a fairly simple airport monorail system. read more

The terminal connects to the air train if you purchase your tickets before you enter the air train you can use the ticket to go anywhere in New Jersey the ticket cost $5. The staff were very helpful and friendly. I was able to get on the train and which took me to the transit station where trains were going to New York and New Jersey. Great ride in this small body train and I made lots of new friends in this short journey. Further you do not have to step out side the airport to get on this train and its a cost effective ride to New York of New Jersey of $5. Any taxi ride will cost you $50. read more

This is the easiest way to get between terminals at Newark Airport. It is clean, usually a quick ride and it has been a long time since I have had any issues with non-working trains or delays. Usually runs every 5 minutes, except after midnight when it could be every 15-20 minutes. As an employee at EWR this is a great means of getting from one terminal to another to get a quick bite to eat between flights. Or, getting to the employee bus for parking in inclement weather. read more

One thing I've learned after missing multiple flights is that you absolutely can never count on the Newark AirTrain. When you are running late, you'll find yourself waiting in line for the stand-in bus because the AirTrain had an electrical failure. When you time your journey perfectly to make the security cut off, you can count on the AirTrain being down to one train for maintenance reasons... In short, the Newark AirTrain is just not reliable... PARTING THOUGHT: My new go-to route for EWR from Manhattan is taking the PATH train to Newark Penn Station and hopping in a cab to the airport ($15)...it may be slightly pricier, but it's totally worth it! read more

The signage to find the shuttle was a bit challenging, and I usually consider myself decent at navigating airports and using public transportation. Once I was on board the AirTrain, it was two stops to the Newark Airport train station. I did purchase my NJ Transit tickets at the AirTrain station at the airport in the hopes of expediting the process. I thought that was a nice feature, though I would have hoped that Amtrak would put a ticket kiosk there as well. The train does idle at the stations for a few minutes to allow people to come onto the train. As a result, it's not the fastest train, but it accomplishes the goal of getting you onto the NJ Transit/Amtrak lines. If you need to get into Manhattan, this is the first leg of the public transportation process. A necessary evil. read more

The AirTrain Newark is my favorite way to get to Newark, unless my company is paying for a car service. The trains are regularly scheduled and I've never had a problem getting a seat on the train, but I do go early and prepared. You can easily purchase a ticket from a orange and blue self service kiosk located throughout Penn Station. On the way to the airport, you'll have to take a NJ Transit from Penn Station. One tip, I'd like to suggest, is waiting in the lower level by those main escalators, you'll have a slight headstart while still having a view of the big board and there are those powerful air conditioning units that will keep you cool during the summer. Also be warned there are two Newark stops, just listen carefully or look to see where everyone with bags get off on. Once at the Newark stop, you'll need to go to the AirTrain station, be sure to have your ticket stub from the NJ Transit as you'll feed this ticket to get into the AirTrain station. When on the train, double check which stop you'll need to get off on for your airport. That's it! My only complaint is on the return trip. The station platform has a small indoor area this is usually pretty cold, so have your jacket ready in the fall/winter/spring. Happy travels! read more

Years ago, when my family and I moved here, when my kids were very small, we would ride the air train when coming to the airport from the parking garage. Back then, I had my kids convinced that there was a man driving the train, sitting in the very front. Always, when my kids were about to challenge me about this, there would be an announcement on the pa system and I would tell them to listen because the guy was talking. This would satisfy them. A few years later, when my son and daughters were more the wise, I pointed out that if no one was up front driving the train, why is there a windshield wiper on the front of the train? They looked at me with hesitation. My youngest daughter said that made sense. So, this logic got me another year. Finally, at some point a few years later, the kids didn't believe in the driver at the front of the train any longer so the engineer of the Newark air train retired, taking with him Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. Well, many years have passed since then and I still laugh when I ride the air train and I hear the same announcements being made, by the same recorded voice, "Please remove all personal items before leaving the train." For a moment or two, if I close my eyes, I am a young man once again, and I can see my little kids holding on for dear life, convinced the guy driving the air train is going to drive off the track and wondering where he must be sitting at the front of the train! Then, I hear that "we are approaching the station," and I am brought back to reality, my eyes opening and i glance at my wristwatch, wondering if my daughter's flight is on time. I rush off the train, hurrying to meet her at the security check point. It has been a year since I last saw my daughter and this time she is bringing with her my little grand daughter! As I wait at the gate, looking for them to arrive, I start to smile as I think to myself, "I wonder if my grand daughter will be surprised to learn there's a guy sitting up front, driving the Newark air train? read more

Man, Matteo sniped me on the first review! I actually like this better than JFK's AirTrain. Here's my breakdown: Pros: - Seems to come more often than JFK's airtrain (5-6 minutes instead of 10) though this might be a timing thing. - Runs in both directions from every stop (so you don't have to go all the way around the loop just to reach a station at the end of it) - The ride from midtown Manhattan is very fast. For me it's a no transfer ride from the Upper West Side, whereas with the E train I must change at least once. It's similar to taking the LIRR from Midtown to JFK, except here you don't have a slower public transit choice. Cons: - Dinkiest little Disneyland train cars ever. They're like medium sized elevators. I'd say only three, four Chris Christies could fit inside each one. - Very few 'up' escalators from the NJ Transit platform even though most people are lugging bags. Seems like an easy fix. - NJ Transit is very old looking, very 80s... I was very surprised. The PATH trains are so nice but these are so ugly. Too bad I already bought a 10 ride JFK AirTrain ticket. Anyway, given that you have to pay the $5 tourist tax for either EWR or JFK, I'd say that this is the better AirTrain among the two. But that's like comparing two turds and saying one is better because it has fewer corn chunks in it. read more

This is one of worst run forms of transportation at the airport. You are better off catching a bus, taxi or walking between terminals. The employees are rude and uniformed, the trams constantly go out of service and they are never on schedule. If you need to travel between terminals, skip the air tram and find a different mode of travel. read more

Newark Liberty International Airport offered the worst signage I've ever experienced for an airport transit link system. I was looking for the AirTrain and went down and up two different sets of escalators before I found the AirTrain. It costs around $8 for a one-way trip that lasts something like 10 mins (not sure, I didn't time it, but it's short). Seriously offended by this pricing scheme. What the hell. Trains going in the opposite direction of where they say they're going. Tiny ass cars. Takes forever for the doors to close. Garbled announcements on the PA system. I'm STILL on this damn train and have been for 30 minutes! Where am I going? Lord only knows cause it's switched directions twice. Help! I think I live here now. The infrequency and low quality of NJ Transit train service from EWR (Newatk Int'l Airport) to Manhattan and surrounding areas down to Trenton, NJ, and Philly is an appalling blight on the whole region, made worse by the general absence of anything superior. ("Express buses" might or might not turn out to be faster or slower, depending on the time of day and week, narrow hours of service, and unpredictable outages, cancellations, and traffic jams). Best idea: call before you go to figure out your best of the bad options in your unique circumstances. Better yet, fly into and out of LGA and JFK, which also lack adequate public transit service but R closer to Manhattan if you just decide to take a car. During early mornig hours, weekends, and late nights, expect to wait as much as 3 hours or more for a mass transit option. Or just hire Uber or Lyft (at excorbitant rates). To reiterate, it's appalling. Think in terms of developing nation, not world financial capital, and your expectations will be about right. read more

***The AirTrain at Newark International Airport connects passengers to the many terminals, parking garages and rental car agencies at Newark's airport (it also connects you to the train station to get you to Manhattan, Philadelphia, Trenton, and other cities); unfortunately, the train is rather slow so it might take you more time to get to your terminal than you are expecting; I think the trains also get rather packed given the slowness of the trains*** I am not sure what the parking situation is at Newark International Airport, but I imagine parking here is very expensive like other major airports. read more

If your flight gets in at midnight, br prepared for a 15 minute wait to get a train to where you need to go. They shut it down to one rail. And 4 uniformed people stand around trying to explain what's happening. It's like being in a poor country -- not a major airport. Add to that a slow ride... And you're talking an hour minimum from the time you offload to when you're outta there. Not easy. read more

I took EWR Airtrain last week for the first time and was not impressed. It was a little before 5am and I boarded the AirTrain to go to terminal A. The announcements on the train indicated the train was going to all terminals. We got to terminal C and I remained on board, and after the doors closed, the train went backwards back toward the EWR train station. I got off at the P4 station where an AirTrain employee told me I had to transfer at C because it was before 5 am. For real? No signs or announcements at the stations or on the trains. The cars are incredibly small, too. On the way back it was funny watching people try to maneuver their huge luggage into the cramped compartments. read more

Excellent connection to New York City. The AirTrain runs fairly frequently. Paying around $12, you can take the AirTrain and NJ Transit train to Penn Station. The cars, or compartments, are a little small compared to the JFK airtrain or even the NY subway or any train, but they run pretty frequently. I think this may be an issue if you have a lot of luggage. Very neat and clean, nicely heated on a cold day. read more

The air train is a quick shuttle train that takes you from airport terminal to terminal and then also to rental cars, parking and the city train station. My only complaint is that the signs in the airport to find the shuttle are horrible. One sign points you towards bag claim which I went to and after walking end to end asked someone and they said "it's up one floor" so I went up and finally found it. The signs should mention what floor the air train is on as it would be highly beneficial. I am a very frequent traveler and even I had a tough time locating it. Newbies would be lost for sure. There is no cost for the shuttle so that's a great thing. Enjoy! read more

Maybe I underestimate the difficulty to build a reliable automated shuttle but it this one seems particularly unreliable. Before it's refurbishing and extension in the late 90s, it seems that it was always broken... Most of the time that I went through Newark it was down and required an unpleasant bus ride between the terminal. I was hoping that they would switch design during the extension but no, they did not. Although it is somewhat more reliable since it is still often down and is every night. I try to avoid it as much as I can (when transiting from terminal A to C you can do so with a bus in the secured area) but sometimes it is unavoidable like when renting a car, taking the train (NJT or Amtrak) or want to reach an hotel shuttle. For years I though that the recorded voice making the automated announcement was done by Brent Spiner (Data in ST:TNG) but I found that it was rather done by a NY traffic announcer (locals knows that I am sure) by the name of Bernie Wagenblast (it seems like an appropriate name isn't it, wonder if he was born with it?) http://www.bwcommunications.net read more

Not a big deal , but when you ask one of the guys in the 5 red coats if there is an issue and they prefer to ignore you and chat and laugh amongst themselves, it's a problem. Living in Brooklyn this is basically the only way I travel to and from Newark Airport (when JFK flights are not available) since there are no airport buses that leave from Brooklyn. It's a pretty easy trip from the NJT Newark Airport stop to the AirTrain, and the AirTrain arrives every 4 minutes, as opposed to the 10-12 minute wait at JFK. Because you can buy NJT train tickets and see the schedule before boarding AirTrain, you can actually decide whether to hang out in the terminal, maybe for dinner, if the next NJT train is not coming for an hour (as can be the case late at night). read more

The worst ever after midnight. Trains were 13 mins apart (vs 4 mins) and had to go through one transfer before getting to the rental car station when coming from terminal C. Confused? Yes, most of the passengers were confused and frustrated. Took half an hour just to get from terminal C to P2. It was crowded with full of pissed off people - and no one care! read more

How reliable is the EWR Air Train service ? This service is great, but, when it is "out of service", well it just doesn't work. This was the case on June 11, 2013. The alternative supplied was one or two shuttle buses that are not designed to carry people with lots of luggage which is the norm for airplane travel. After 30 minutes of waiting, a young staff member told people who were just going to the other terminals that they might as well walk. But those who were trying to connect with the NJ train to Penn Station in NYC were fresh out of luck, without a paddle. There was NO alert and NO alternative. When we did make it by the bus to the NJ train station, an hour later, I asked the Air train staff member how often this occurs. "More often that you might think" she said. Maybe losing an hour leaving the airport is relatively consequence free, but, I think that having to add an extra hour to your trip to an airport (just in case) to make it to a plane on time is a big deal. The staff was sweet and kind, but the service was not. Since this happens with some regularity, where's the management? read more
