The prices are on the higher end but is worth it due to the quality. The bakery department makes me drool and it's impossible to leave the store without one. For over a decade my Wife and I have enjoyed shopping at AJ's Fine Foods in Chandler and yes it can be expensive at times, but here, you get what you pay for in quality, convenience, service, and especially their expertise in all things food! We obviously don't do our weekly shopping here, but when you're looking for top quality, best tasting and hard to find items related to almost anything culinary this is the place to go. For nearly forty years they've been around, and the over a decade of our patronizing them, we've never been let down, and I don't think anyone else in the community have either! They undoubtedly must have connoisseurs for every department making their purchases for our consumption. Their expert teams including grocery purveyors, chefs and oenologists and other specialists they appear devoted to supplying the peak-quality stuff and service to us. This is more than a grocery store, it's an upscale gourmet market mixed with a cafe and bakery. The made to order drinks are refreshing, they also have fresh pastries, and prepared hot food if you're not in the mood to cook. Don't skip the high quality produce, meats, and seafood! I had heard of AJ's many times before, but this was my first time going there. AJ's is like Whole Foods on steroids in that it's a fancy grocery store that comes with the price tag to reflect that. That being said, if you're looking for some fancy or specialty grocery item, there's a good chance of finding it here. This place has gone so downhill. I ordered a couple sandwiches and the lady forgot to add the actual meat- she gave us sloppy condiments on bread. I don't even know how that's possible unless drug use is a factor. The prices have gone up while the quality and customer service has done down. Their baked goods never disappoint, and this time I treated myself to a slice of lemon cake. Let me just say... wow. It was perfectly moist, bright, and bursting with flavor. Every bite was sweet sunshine. The young gentleman who rang me up was incredibly polite and on top of everything. He moved at lightning speed and cleared the line like a pro. We love their hot food and soup bar, and all the varieties they have. I still have some lasagna waiting for me at home I'm looking fwd to! The service is always nice, the employees help you find what you're looking for. My wife was disappointed in the freshness selection of their blackberries, but finding those in season is pretty hit or miss. Most of all, this AJ's has a CIGAR EMPORIUM! There is a gentleman that works the deli counter who is extremely lazy and rude. He will outright tell you that he will not slice your deli meat thin because "he is working by himself and he doesn't have time." This was with nobody else in line for the deli. After asking a second time, he did it, although not very pleased by the look on his face and scoffs. He then threw the meat in the bag like it was garbage, making a mess when he was done. I notified the manger who apologized on his behalf and I was issued a refund. She told me the worker would be spoken to. Fast forward a few weeks later, a family member of mine had the same exact encounter with this same employee who refused to slice the meat thin because he was busy. You can even get what's considered the world's finest salmon- Copper River salmon for $59.99/lb which is not something you can find at other grocery stores. My favorite thing about the store is their flower section, both real and fake. Their fake flowers look so real and very beautiful that it's worth the spendy prices. The pastries are really good here and I appreciate they have a free water station which is very thoughtful for the customers. Checked out their individual pizza slices but they looked burnt and unappetizing. The ready to eat food section didn't look as inviting as they have on prior visits. read more

We come here a few times a week and it has gone downhill. For an upscale grocery, they lack staff and customer service. To get a drink in the bakery it takes 20 minutes. On a slow day. The deli refuses to make sandwiches because they say they don't have the staff. I was there the other night and I asked for a sandwich and the guy working said no because of the staff situation but he was not doing anything, not one customer in the deli. I told him this and he responded "No sandwiches!" it has been maybe 4 months since anyone could make us one. Please hire some employees! read more

Large outdoor patio seating for food selections from the outdoor grill (burgers, BBQ and more) and indoor selections (daily hot lunch, pizza by slice, incredible salad bar, delicious soups, sandwiches and sushi). The salad bar has 3-4 types of lettuce, many fresh vegetables, some exotic vegetables, meat selections (ham, chicken) and more. Typically 6-10 dressings to choose from. Usually $10-15 gets you a great meal and a drink (wide selection of teas and more). Friendly staff- Karla at the bakery is so sweet! Also they tend to rotate soups and pizza slices and hot meals of the day so if they don't have your favorites today they likely will have them tomorrow. read more

Very terrible woman working at the cafe/bakery/drink counter. My friend ordered a large cherry drink, and they wound up making her a small by mistake. She informed then of the size being wrong, and a very mean worker (short, light brown hair up in a bun on her head) took the drink, dumped it into a large cup, and just added more ice. What the heck?? This isn't a Starbucks where espresso shots cost extra. My friend was like "That is just ice" and she gave us a dirty look and walked away. This woman is consistently working at this area and is always giving customers attitude. I've been going to this particular AJs for years. Up until recently, I never had a bad experience, but things have changed. I have heard through people that work there that there is a new internal management team. Whatever it is, I know the bakery manager has left and she was a top asset for that store. My weekly visit always includes the salad bar. The contents have changed, especially the chicken. Not sure how they cook it now, but it doesn't even resemble what it used to look like. There is a brownish skin and is extremely dry. It used to be somewhat juicy and very tasty. I even talked to a random customer last week who had the same sentiment as I do. He said he showed management and that they still did nothing. The produce section is just as bad as everything else. Every time I go here, I am excited! Because I don't live anywhere near this location, but it's the closest to me. I love assortment of bake goods over at the bakery counter. I love the different selections of pastas they have. And that roster chicken, is always nice and juicy 10/10 better than Costco! The store is always clean, and a not super busy. But I'm usually a late night shopper. ---The killer--- The main cashiers! They ruin it every-single-time. I've been ignored walking right up. The young guy had his arms crossed and faced away from the register. I've been told to my face, go to a different register. While the younger lady was on her phone. I've had the older gentleman throws my fruit in the bag. The Blood oranges are $3.99 lbs, please handle with care. By no means do I plan to stop shopping there, even though there is a Trader Joe's down the way. And a sprouts and Whole Foods as well. I love how this place has so many great options to pick on the go type meals etc. I've heard Raving reviews of their sushi and still have yet to try the sushi which I'm hoping this weekend it will happen at another location we will be across the street from. I really wish they would redo the tea/lemonade are for people who are in a hurry and on limited time. I'm a mom of two and it's hard to keep my little one chill for over 20 minutes just to grab a viral iced tea. For the price it's great but for convenience it's a definite not unless you like waiting for ages to just get a tea. I feel like they need diff counters for diff things. Service: Ordered a week in advance, had to sign up for a time slot, then waited in line for an hour to pick up. When we got to the front of the line, they were out of rolls, so we didn't get some of the items we paid for. We had to go to another grocery store to buy rolls. Preparation: The instructions said the items take between 10 and 40 minutes to reheat--it took and hour and a half and we had to crank up the oven for an hour of that time. "Reheat" is actually a misnomer as both the sweet potatoes and green beans had not been cooked through to begin with. The sweet potatoes in particular were rock hard and in giant pieces--we had to cut them down and they took the full 1.5 hours to cook. Quality: Turkey and gravy were good, mashed potatoes and stuffing were dry and bland, sweet potatoes were bland, green beans were bland, apple pie was inedible--the crust was bitter and unpleasant. Value: This was the worst Thanksgiving dinner I have ever eaten, was NOT ultimately any easier than it would have been to cook it ourselves, and still cost $240. Never. Again. AJ's has some serious work to do to earn my trust back and in addition to this review I will be calling management to let them know how disappointed I am. read more

TLDR: They gave away our graduation party cake to someone else and implied it was our fault and that we were trying to trick them Recently, my mom ordered a cake for my graduation party several days in advance. When she went to pick up the cake on the day, they told her someone else had already grabbed it. This is odd for several reasons: why can anyone just "grab" the cake? Even if it had been me or my dad grabbing it, they don't confirm who it is? No confirmation number, no ID check. Apparently anyone can pickup a cake at AJ's and the employee might grab your cake as the sacrifice. Look we get it, people make mistakes. It's how people own up to their mistakes that matters. If they said "We don't have the cake, we apologize, how can we make it right," it would have been a different story. Instead, the employee pointedly asked my mom if she was sure that she didn't already grab it. I'm sure they had family members get mixed up in the past (there should be a system for this, see above), but my mom had already confirmed she did not have the cake. At that point, the employee was either accusing my mom of trying to get a free cake or implying she had memory loss. To what end, I don't know. It ruined her day. read more

You can't order cakes anymore? AJ's has the most delicious cakes ever, but there's no way to plan anymore. I have walked in the last 3 times and all the cakes were gone. The bakery said they don't make them every day and it's first come first serve, or you can order one at least 48 hours in advance. So I called the other day to order one well in advance, seems there are never any available. They said they stopped their ordering policy as of that day. So now it's only walk-in and take your chances. I ask when they'll have fresh cakes and they can't even tell you when because they never know when the baker is coming in. I am just super disappointed as there is now no way to plan or assure you'll get a cake, let alone a flavor that you want. It's just a different story EVERY time I go in. read more

I was wandering around and browsing because I still don't know exactly all of the food options available here. He asked if I was hungry and said he'd fix me up a plate of eggs and potatoes with sausage and bacon. After that, he said I'd need some more snacks to munch on at work so if I need anything else to come grab him. I ended up grabbing a soup too. (Spoiler alert, I ate it all before work and didn't even save any of it for work!) TJ was nice in explaining how the breakfast works and told me it runs until 10 then lunch is after that. When I asked to be checked out at the register where I placed my food, she declined without even looking at me. It's fine, just walked over to the other one and requested the medium cup price for my large tea, and she rudely said, "I guess." I adore AJ's, but don't shop here often because of their extremely higher-end prices. Although, it's really hard to go wrong in coming here because the quality is definitely top notch, so it's worth it for a host of reasons. And, shopping here is extremely peaceful. It's a very cozy store, ambient lighting & and everyone is laid back- no rush. I always go in with the intent of one or two specific items... and 2 hours later i'm coming out with a basket overflowing. It's not just the common items that are in WAY better condition than other chains, but the abundance of specialty & more 'uncommon' items in most other chains. The variety, specifics & paired with how well maintained & organized the store is- it's a pleasure to shop here. But, my issue with all of their locations, this one included, is the consistency & what the heck is up with trying to close down significantly early nearly every day. Promptly by 6pm every time I visit, the bakery, deli, soup, salad, hot meal, sushi & charcuterie stations are all shutting down & cleared out. Right in the middle of dinner hour? ...it isn't just this location or one visit. So it's a little frustrating half the store is shut down & you can't get anything from those areas if you don't arrive prior to 5-6pm. ...some of the employees are very generous & will stay behind to help. But, that isn't common. The seafood & meat counters had 1 employee trying to hop between when he was at the counter trying to manage helping production team in the back. It had a chunk of a wait- luckily everyone was patient. And, the gentleman was a champ in keeping his cool under the circumstances- he was a pleasure & I appreciate his sincere help while balancing lacking management. I did not have much of a wait time, but those ahead of me were very agitated at the counter for bakery. The number system is great- until you have one employee only, trying to serve 10. The backup comes over from the shut down deli, and is stuck with an indecisive customer. There's no management anywhere to assist- why? It's odd backup was requested for the checkout counter when there was 3 lanes widely open 1 minute later when I was already approaching before backup... maybe they misspoke and meant the other counter needed the help? Checkout was easy. The gentleman was very nice & efficient. Respectful of bagging. But the lighting in that area is really difficult at dusk or after the sun is not beating down. From checkout to the entire parking lot- lighting is sparse. I got a good haul. For what was available. One recommendation: for the cookies, stop making a giant quantity of the ones that aren't popular & make more of what is constantly sold out. It's obvious when you have a container full of 20 lemon cookies but 0 chocolate chip. Bummer that is the only thing available besides the backed up counter. I luckily scraped the remaining scraps of a few options thrown into the wrong bin. I love AJ's, there's just a few things that need to be addressed or improve a bit. Especially when going in on a Friday evening for Beth's wine special of the week- it's very disappointing to find half the store shutting down hours before closing when you come in for specifics to pair it with, not just the wine or packaged ready/isle food. I can't justify the 30 minute one-way drive or upper-scale pricing if I'm grabbing leftovers or entirely out of luck after 6pm.
