Having moved from the other side of town, the three closest AJ's to me had taken to bulking out their breakfast burritos with cheap potatoes to save cost, which would legit give me enough carbs to need a nap at 9 am. Not what I expect from the bougie grocery store. This location still just fills 'em with protein, and they let you take two salsas per burrito. The fresh salsa is unabashedly spicy too. I also appreciate the old standby $1.50 gigantic, unsweetened iced tea selection. You cannot get iced tea this size at this price at a coffee shop, or even a gas station, anymore. Most of the prepared lunch/dinner foods are overpriced, but great in a pinch and the sizes aren't bad. The meat and seafood sections are solid, and I value that in a city where fish mongers and butchers aren't super accessible. The staff is friendly and efficient as well. read more

I really love AJ's fine foods. First of all when you walk in there is a huge seasonal selection and I am so tempted to buy pretty much everything they have. I love that their fruits and vegetables section is completely stocked and put these cute little baskets. The ambience of the store is top-notch and they have some of the best premade meals selections in the back of the store I could ever ask for. There is also a wine cellar section that has a wide array of wines and spirits. And a very nice bourbon selection as well. The staff was super friendly. We worked with Kyle in the back by the premade foods and meats, and he was so informative and very helpful. The only reason this did not get a five star was the sandwich aisle was out of a lot of ingredients they have on the menu. read more

So this is one those grocery stores that charges more than the other places. Since it has "fine foods" in its name, I specifically looked for items/brands that I could not find at other chains. It's basically a waste to buy items like Pepsi/Coca-Cola because they are cheaper at other grocery stores. Of the 7 items I bought, my average rating is 2.57 out of 5 stars for them. Based on word of mouth, I was expecting an amazing grocery store with fantastic customer service, It was very disappointing. The store is nice but it is not one of a kind store. If Phoenix ever has a Cooperative open-up, AJ's is going to suffer. The lack of natural, organic, vegetarian, and vegan options was shocking. The bakery which had a lot of customers was congested and it all comes down to whether or not to take a number. The team behind the bakery counter needs a leader who can direct traffic and sufficiently take care of the customers. The bottleneck clears up the further you get to the back of the store and then turn right. The Christmas seasonal decor was very pretty but if AJs is going to market 'Feliz Navidad" and "Joyeux Noel" make sure that there are actual products from Mexico and France. Super disappointing to see Belgium and Dutch chocolate under the banner "Joyeux Noel" From what I was told, the meat section was supposed to be 'the best' not sure how that can be when they had frozen sausages on display in the case. I would expect that for a Safeway or Fry but not AJ's. I checked out and my cashier had a full-blown conversation with another employee in the next aisle. She did not once greet me or say anything. This is my favorite AJ's location. Service is always excellent here. They have fresh sushi bar, so I often stop by to grab a quick lunch. I also like their soups and today I tried their gumbo. It was so delicious, I ended up bringing extra home. Can't forget about their desserts. Lots of varieties are offered. Everything is excellent including their cookies. Highly recommend!! read more

Very appalling experience today. Apparently not important how much you spend there on a regular basis nor if you follow return policy and provide receipt and problem item IF you are unfortunate enough to deal with the "bookkeeper" Mary Beth. She took it upon herself to burn through 20 minutes of my time, whined and made snarky comments about me to bakery manager who actually validated issue I had with a cake. He literally said "those cakes suck." But Marybeth still sought to bully and humiliate me for unknown reasons. I would not want anyone treated in that manner. Then she seemed to blame me for her register not working and acted like it was my fault she couldn't complete basic transaction. Not that surprising for Arizona I suppose. But charging high prices consummate with high quality...need to have basic respect for customers too. I've recently fallen for the AJs ambiance and their iced tea. I tried their chicken cesar wrap, but wasn't impressed. The chicken was dry and flavorless, also just too chunky for a wrap I prefer it chopped. I also tried their broccoli cheddar soup and the clam chowder. We have been shopping at this AJ's, both when we lived here and whenever we in town for a visit. The prices are typical AJ's, which are somewhat full. But, it's still the only place in the Valley where I can pickup some specialty items. They stock Peter Lugar's steak sauce (yep), Gold's Horseradish, Desert Gardens mixes and dips, aged balsamic vinegars, along with several Münchner bräuhaus Weißbiers. Today AJ's is still owned by Basha's, so several of these items can be purchased there. But it's limited and some items are not always in stock. NorCal based Raley's Supermarkets purchased Bashas' a few years ago and promising to keep the formats and store names the same, they even kept Edward Basha III as president. Nice. Btw, the employees are all very nice and will go of their way to help find what you are looking for. read more

Let me tell you this I love this grocery store! Everyone here is super friendly and nice. They have a great food selection and beverages. Also if you have a sweet tooth then the bakery is something to check out they have really delicious baked goods. I fell in love with their freshly made pizza. They have a brick oven so the pizza comes out super delicious even better when you order ahead. Definitely would check this place out and get some food. It's sometimes pricey but it's well worth it. This review is for people who are curious about their breakfast on the weekends. I had heard about it several times, specifically their biscuits and gravy but really couldnt find much info (or photos) online... The biscuits and gravy were good, BUT it was NOT "breakfast" biscuits and gravy...? They felt like something that youd serve at like thanksgiving dinner? It was more of a chicken or turkey type of flavored gravy. The actual biscuits were good and soft and the gravy had a good flavor but it just wasnt right for us. Again, they werent bad tasting but they just werent what you expect for breakfast biscuits and gravy (ill attach a pic). We tried a few other things: some scrambled eggs, bacon and some sausage from the same area that they serve the biscuits and gravy and then we also got a pre-made sausage egg and cheese sandwich. None of it was good, but none of it was inedible either. I wouldnt choose them again for breakfast. That being said, i REALLY like the pizza they make and i dont think ive ever had a bad dessert from their bakery area. My friend and I decided to ride our bikes here for brunch. I haven't been to an AJ's in years so was game. What a pleasant surprised. They had a omelette station, people were lining up to get their customized omelettes. So many Options to choose from, sandwiches to pizza, to pastries, soups, take Home meals. We looked around and also had Valentine's Day items which was super Cute. I opted to get a sandwich, went with the "AJ's combo" on sourdough. It was so good. Hit the right spot. My friend had the speciality pizza (1 slice) which was awesome. Sue gave me a bite. So good. Overall I would come back here again to try other items. The grille outside was open. My first time going to AJ's, I came in to try their iced teas. We got a ticket, i waited like 20 minutes before being helped. anyway the service is terrible!! The employees don't just ignore you, they actively avoid helping anyone. I watched at least four different people walk out and leave their food behind because no one would help them. And honestly, I don't blame them. You can literally stand there making eye contact with multiple workers, clearly waiting to be helped, and they'll just look right past you like you're invisible. read more

Second time (years later) my daughter bought a cake for her sister's birthday. The cake layers weren't evenly filled causing you to bite into dry cake! Yuck Third try I purchased multiple macarons which were beautiful but tasted terrible. Fourth and final try was two days ago. I went to look for a nice bottle of wine. My daughter bought 4 desserts. You know I love AJs and I've never had this problem at any other location but this store. They are so horribly bad a customer service that I usually avoid coming to this one all together. I can't tell you how many times I waited too long at the deli to even be acknowledged let alone helped, not even a "I see you and I will be right with you in a moment" literally nothing. Poor attitudes like these people hate their jobs, their lives and everyone they cross paths with daily. It's a depressing environment in general. today I waited so long (even with a number) at the deli counter without even being acknowledged despite there being multiple employees back there walking around, one even looked directly at me and said nothing, eventually I just walked out. I don't mind waiting, but not even being acknowledged by employees is just unacceptable, especially considering the price point. The only thing I can count on at this store is being ignored or treated like a burden for shopping there. Sad. Shame on management. Only reason two stars instead of one is because at least the foods good... but let's not forget- that's a corporate thing, not a location thing. Do better AJ's! read more

AJ's I wish I could give you 5 stars because honestly you deserve it but sometimes the line for the bakery is absolutely heinous and while I know it's not your fault when you're skipping like 6 numbers cause it's pure chaos I want to cry. In all seriousness AJ's is an icon and a legend the iced tea is perfect every single time. The deli is insane, I implore you to try some of their red skinned potato salad, grab a loaf of garlic sourdough, and a dozen caramel pecan cookies, then marvel at all of the pasta options. Nothing wrong with Fry's and Safeway, but it's nice to change it up every once in a while for an experience you can get at a place like this. So many local groceries. Everything is so organized when you walk in. Not a fruit misplaced. The service is friendly and you can tell people love to work there. They have a couple little trinket sections that you can totally get lost in and find yourself buying something for someone because it made you think of them. Should probably be called AJ's flies in your food because that's exactly what I got. I traveled 30 minutes to buy desserts for my moms 71st birthday only to find a fly in the dessert container. The management was not accommodating at all even after this disgusting event. There is tons of take and carry food being sold here and I bet you'd be also eating flies there also.
