The jeweler responsible for this type of work was at lunch (it was around 3:40pm) so I was told to go to Ridgewood Ale House for a bit (good suggestion). So I happened upon AJ's randomly, to get a quote on how much a watch battery replacement would cost me. Let's just say the cost was very reasonable (based on what type of battery is needed); but more importantly, I am writing this review because of his professionalism! When asked what it would cost to replace the crystal on my watch (very minor scratches on the edges), he didn't try to up-sell me, rather he said that though he could do the job, he wouldn't recommend it, as it wouldn't be worth the cost, nor the amount of time to have it done, and that in fact the face wasn't that bad at all! I honestly love this place. When I come in here I'm treated like family. My family and I has been coming in here for years with our searches for earrings, watches, baby bracelets, and especially custom requests for out of this world jewelry. They truly go above and beyond for you. Let's take my father for example, he is by far, the most particular customer I've ever seen when it comes to anything. So it has to be a custom piece, because no one can have what he has. If the gold is not heavy enough, he'd change it. If the yellow Sapphire is not dark and manly enough for him, he'll make you change it to a golden Yellow Beryl stone. He is so meticulous, that if the staff here haven't jumped off a cliff now to kill themselves, they can please almost any client, even the most challenging, like my father*. If it comes time where I really want to spoil someone, I would come here and pick something out for them, or if I know they completely deserve something, an I just can't figure it out, I'll get them a gift certificate here. I know that if I'm not with them, they will always be taken care of. It doesn't hurt to try the place at least once. Especially since they have the current Yelp deal right now going on. I went to AJ's to get links taken off an ESQ watch and links put back on a Cartier, along with replacing the battery in the Cartier. This was at around 3:00 PM. They said that the watch repair person was about to go to lunch and was backed up, but they would get it done that day and text me. Okay, I live about a mile away and took an Uber there, but yeah, okay. 2 hours later, they texted me that it was ready, but they didn't have the tools for the Cartier. If they had told me that initially, I wouldn't have dropped the watch off, but okay. I texted back "Were you able to replace the battery in the Cartier?" (thinking that the links were the issue) and they responded (verbatim) "No. Not in Cartier. Only the link sizing." I responded "Oh, okay." So, I went to pick up the watches and they hadn't put the links back on the Cartier. The watch repairman firmly noted that he doesn't do work on links if he can't replace the battery, then repeated this to show how firmly he felt about this and concluded with "Sorry, that's just me - I don't do the links if I can't replace the battery". He then explained "I don't have the tools. You'll have to go to a fancier place for the Cartier." Hmmm! Um, so very not okay. This could not be any less okay. I mentioned that I would happily pay to just have the links replaced. He would not do this (10-minute) job, as the place was closing in 40. I would have just never dropped off either watch if they had told me that. Now I must go to another place, which will charge less - a place in the Diamond District that does link work on the spot (no trip back) for $15, while this place charges $27. So, I paid more, had to make two round trips out there, and still have to make a trip to a fancier place. Who takes lunch at 3:00? Who doesn't want to do any more work when closing time is 40 minutes away? Please...take the watch repairman's advice - don't go to AJ's, instead go to a "fancier" place....they will likely be cheaper as well. read more

What a gem! I needed my engagement ring resized and did not want to go into the city where it was purchased. I saw that Ajs was close and had good reviews so I figured I'd give it a shot. From the moment I called it was a great experience. Once we visited and explained the situation, the team was so helpful and came up with the best solution for the long term. Last week I dropped off my great grandfathers ring to then for a simple stone re-set in it's original 14k gold band. They took a look at it when I came in and wouldnt stop reassuring me it was an easy fix. $10 estimate. I was really pleased. Came back today and they handed me the ring with epoxy residue all over it. I woudlnt accept the job done in this condition so they offered to have their "master craftsman from Peru" buff it out for me. They handed me back the ring and had me ready to check out when the falls out right in front of us both. They took absolutely no responsibility and who I think was the manager kept exclaiming that he has been in the business for 30 years. 30 years experience and they couldn't set a simple stone. Take your business elsewhere! I would highly recommend Grand Jewlery instead. Grand even took in one of my mixed metal rings for resizing that AJ Jewelry had completely denied servicing. read more

Not only did he replace the battery promptly, he also was cool with me waiting in the car (it was raining and I had my toddler with me). Then! He actually ran the watch out to me. So nice. My girlfriend bought a ring online for me and we wanted to make sure it was real before we kept it. We searched for a jeweler with the proper technology to test the stone and band to give us an appraisal. AJ's was the first jeweler I called that was kind over the phone when I explained what we needed and told me to stop by. We were greeted by everyone working when we walked in and the owner tested the ring right in front of us. To our delight it was real after all and worth way more than she paid for it! We talked to the staff for a bit and looked at bands to match the ring. When I described what I envisioned in my head, he knew the exact ring to pull from the counter and I was almost in tears at how perfectly my dream ring had become a reality. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and didn't make us feel any different than any other customer. Other jewelers I'd been to in the past seemed uncomfortable that we were two women looking for engagement rings, or dismissive of my partner assuming we were just friends asking when "he" or "my boyfriend" would be coming in. It might not seem like a big deal to others, but it made us feel welcomed and comfortable. We purchased the band and left both rings to get re-sized. By the next day they were ready and not only did they fit perfectly, but they smoothed out the prongs for me and cleaned everything up! Aj's has been around forever! They have updated their store over the years so the place doesn't give off the, "I've been here for years" look. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and the jewelry is not cheap. I have a ring, necklace and earrings from Aj's, and they have lasted many years without need of repair. We figured it would be a solid No, sorry, we can not..... we had experienced this at every other place we have gone to. We were told it was not fixable and no one would ever be able to fix it. We went to Ajs for the first time yesterday to look for a baby bracelet for my little girl. We walked out with a gift for each of our little girls. Trandy was so helpful, he was genuinely helping us and explaining the difference between each bracelet that we looked at. He wasn't trying to shove anything down our throats like other places. He understood what we were looking for and went above and beyond. He even explain to my little why place the ring on the finger she did. He thought about long term use of the ring as opposed to in the now moment. I got my baby her name bracelet and I completely fell in love with the lettering used for the engraving. The place was pretty busy but the man ( I think the owner?) knew my fiance's face and asked us about the ring. I told them the size was off and they quickly offered to adjust it. It took about 20 minutes and boom...done! I am definitely happy he picked this place. The owner seemed very against the idea unless I signed something because something could go wrong because of the placement of the stones of the ring. Overall I didn't like the whole tone of the whole conversation. I felt like he just didn't want to do it in the first place. In the end I went somewhere else and they said there was no issue in resizing the ring whatsoever. They had it ready for me in 2 days! I used to go somewhere else to have my watches sized and get new batteries but the previous place I went to closed for business so I had to find out about somewhere else to go. This place is quite overpriced. Staff can be a bit rude as well. The owner comes off a little pretentious. Customer service was almost non existent. I had to argue for them to stand by thier own product and work, and demand satisfaction. Custom work costs over $100 an hour. And if you dont like how they finish it, your essentially stuck with it. Stopped in yesterday to pierce my daughters ears, 12 and 2. My 12 yr old wanted 2 and 1 cartilage. At first they said the price was 20 then when I went to pay they said 30 and if I decided to pierce my 2 yr old it would be 30 for 1???? I didn't feel like arguing so I paid the 30 for my 12 yr old and said I would be back. So not gonna happen!!! Rip offs ! A man ended up helping me but the bracelet was on the high end compared to other places. Also by this time I lost interest. I had also been here earlier in the month to have an old watch serviced. I've been coming to AJ's since I was a kid (my grandma took me here to pierce my ears) and they are the absolute best jewelers in Queens. They've been in business for decades so their knowledge is vast.They have an excellent selection and can custom make almost anything you want. They are the only spot I trust for authentic jewels and gold, and also with all of my repairs. The staff is excellent w repairs. The store is bright and the staff is patient. I can sometimes spend an hour in here browsing and asking prices and the staff is always helpful and courteous, even when I have my kids in tow. They are actually very sweet w my kids and they pierced both of my daughters' ears. So, if you want quality pieces at reasonable prices, this is the place to go. He was very rude. I went into AJ's, interested in selling some pieces of jewelry. When I showed him my gold pieces, he told me "These aren't worth anything! No, no, is this even gold?!" And after inspecting it with his magnifier, he located the imprint, which says how many karats of gold it is. He then replied, "Ah, there it is.. Sorry, not interested. I'm not interested in any of these pieces", and then pushed my jewelry across the counter back to me.. Really snobbish and uptight. He displayed very bad customer service. read more
