Tried this place because well it looked cool and because of you. The other reviewers. It's weird to order in the back but the service was awesome. The speed with which our food came was surprising. It's kinda like a bar but not a bar. Hard to describe. We rarely eat pizza so it took a bit to decide. Some interest choices on the menu. It's NY style so big slices. It was awesome. The cook was perfect. Seasonings perfect and the feel of the place matched as well. It's pretty much serve yourself outside of when they bring your order. I'm good with that. We had a great time a med group of 6. It's hard to get kids together anymore. We sat at a nice long high top table. Thin and long. I thought it was perfect. We pass the plates and go. Parking could be tough some times but they have parking in the back as well as along the street If your wanting to have a quiet low stress pizza either by the NY slice or a large. Stop in. Ooh and someone beside us got an amazing looking sandwich so don't sleep on them. I'll try that next time In case I confused anyone. I highly recommend this place. I just got back from New York City a week ago, where I ate some outstanding pizza, so my expectations were pretty high. Who would've thought one of the first places to impress me afterward would be in the "Little Apple" of Manhattan, Kansas? We tried slices of cheese, pepperoni, and sausage pizza, along with boneless wings, garlic knots, and fried cheese ravioli. Every single item was a winner. The pizza slices were huge, with a great crust, quality toppings, and excellent flavor. The garlic knots absolutely stole the show--soft, buttery, and loaded with enough garlic butter to make any garlic lover happy. The fried ravioli was crispy and cheesy, and the boneless wings were cooked perfectly. The Big Apple may get all the pizza fame, but the Little Apple definitely knows what it's doing. Visiting family in the area, and after spending the day at Fort Riley, i decided to check out Manhattan, KS, aka The Little Apple. Took my Italian-American Boston self to AJ's to check out what their website states: "We use an authentic New York Italian recipe. To account for the differences between the Big Apple and the Little Apple, we have worked closely with Tom Lehmann "the Dough Doctor" and the AIB International. Tom is an authority and author in the pizza industry and a Manhattan, Kansas resident. He has been an invaluable resource in our quest to bring you the best NY style slice outside of NYC. To honor this recipe and the people involved, we use only the finest ingredients. If it is not used in the top NY pizzerias, it is not used at AJ's" I arrived just after the lunch rush and ordered the daily slice special ($7.50 for hot ham & cheese) with a fountain drink and decided on an order of garlic knots w/marinara dipping sauce. The knots were delightfully crunch-chewy and garlicky without being vampirish! My slice was huge and there was no skimping on mozzarella. My only criticism is that the "hot ham" circles (under the generous cheese) were not at all like the capicola I expected, but were more of a smoked Virginia ham, which didn't work for me taste-wise. The crust was pretty close to Neapolitan style, but not 100% New Yorkish. But for the Midwest, I'd say it was pretty darn close. If I'd been hungrier, I'd have tried a pepper & onion slice as well. The interior sports a checker taxi cab motif, and once you order at the counter, you're given a NYC street sign marker for a server to deliver to your table. The garlic knots were delicious and so was the pizza despite the pizza sauce being a bit sweeter than what've I liked to be. The calzone was delicious and it was worth the 15-minute wait. The inside is decorated like a NY-subway station sort of since the staff will bring out signs with NY street signs to mark your order if you dine-in. read more

We ordered the 14" manhattan margarita and 14" with green olives (don't see that very often) mushrooms, pepperoni & Italian sausage. We also got the family size Caesar, which I felt was a little small for the 3 of us. 11yo thought the margarita was one of the best ever. I was a little worried about the tomatoes as he's not a fan but they were chopped up and the amount of basil? Wow! I couldn't really taste the green olives or sausage but they put toppings on top of and underneath the cheese. Yum. Pepperoni & mushrooms galore! Some local taps & fountain drinks rounded off dinner. Expensive so I guess they got the NY part right. Pizza was just ok. Sausage looked and tasted like cardboard squares. Salad was extremely old, lettuce was partially frozen. Dressing high on the vinegar side so kind of overpowering. Tomatoes were more like canned, icky. Service was just ok. They expect you to tip but they do not wait on you. Ohhhh my these are some gooooood wings! Wings are a go to for me i usually just get buffalo or hot ones. I definitely recommend the barbecue ones. Pizza was good i liked how the pepperoni was under and above the cheese. We called ahead and had to wait a little more longer when we got there I'm sure cause they were extremely busy. Great vibes. Cashier lady was very nice and quick with other orders. Im from Texas but if your visiting the area this a place i definitely suggest if your by yourself or with a group! First time here and dang why didn't I find this before graduation day?!?! First off , you MUST get the Cheese Bricks! Amazing!!! Cheese wrapped in bread and covered in butter and garlic, How could you go wrong? We also got the John Stamos and the 18th & 8th pizza's. The Stamos was my fav. The pizza was so so. We got four different slices to try and a ravioli appetizer. The ravioli was over-fried. All of the pizzas we tried were missing "something." The flavors didn't quite hit the way we remembered when we ate here several years ago. The inside wasn't the cleanest. The tea machine was leaking all over the counter and the floor. We were in the restaurant for about 40 minutes and watched employees walk past the ever growing puddle of tea all over the floor. It's been a month since I visited Kansas from out of state and I can't stop daydreaming about this pizza. Hands down the BEST pizza I've had, and you can add any toppings you want by the slice....whaaaat?? I want to go back to Kansas, not to visit my fam but just to get my hands on more of this stuff. The most delicious pizza around. Make sure you visit the AJ's in Manhattan KS. The pizza is perfect and made to perfection. The service was also exceptional. I cannot wait to go again. I wish other AJ's were able to produce the same high quality pizza. Unfortunately the one in Topeka KS cannot. Their pizza seems to be old pieces and thrown into a box. The pizza could have been better. I've never had NYC pizza, but I do know a lot about pizza and bread making. Their crust lacked flavor and gluten development. It seems they used fast fermentation to churn out lots of dough. The crust was thicker than what I would expect from NYC pizza. It lacked the large, uneven bubbles. I couldn't tell if their oven temperatures were too low or if they under-hydrated their dough. There was very little chew to the crust, so it seems like they didn't develop much gluten. The garlic knots' only flavor was from the toppings, not the bread. If their establishment represents real NYC pizza flavor, I don't want to try the real thing. All that being said, I don't think it would take much for them to improve. The toppings were okay and the sauce wasn't bad. I have no complaints about the service or the ambiance. We got our food out quickly, but not too quickly. The staff was friendly. I enjoyed the atmosphere. I just wished the pizza and other bread items had more developed flavor. read more

We ate there the other night, which we do once every couple of months when the need for pizza hits. Just as good as the other times we've eaten there. I'm not sure any pizza in Manhattan Kansas will hold its own in Chicago or New York, but AJs smokes dominoes, pizza shuttle, Dillon's (awful) and other pizza joints around here. For those of you concerned about price, try to order by the topping and stay off the pre made list, it's cheaper and you get what you want. read more

I really enjoyed my pizza and the fantastic selection of slices. Usually most places offer slices in cheese or pepperoni or maybe offer to throw some toppings on for a charge. I personally, prefer a white pizza and unless they have one premade, isn't usually an option. At AJ's they have their whole menu available as slices and I love it! Service was great. They are big supporters of KSU so that's a big plus. The restaurant was clean and inviting. I'll definitely stop in here again next time I'm in the Manhattan, KS area. read more

Ok. So I had high hopes for this local place.. those are partially dashed based on my experience. I should have known when my sparkling water from a sealed bottle was all but flat... Speaking of flatish.... the pizza... but first and in form... the good. Smelled delish when I walked in. Decor is spot on and it has the look and feel of an East Coast train or bus terminal... cool. Staff, very helpful and friendly. Now for my partially dashed hopes... the pizza... I uploaded photos of what looked tastey but fell mostly flat. I should have been more skeptical when my take out order arrived and the box was not piping hot... I opened and added parmesan and peppers and should have caught in... I cant prove it but I feel like my pie was an aging basic for slices that had began life as a basic chez pie that was covered sparsely with my topping choice and covered in more chez.... My hotel is 3 mins away from store and by the time I got to my room and dug in, my pie was barely warmish... I drove straight to my hotel.. As for taste... that was inconsistent from bite to bite.... the sauce wasn't distributed evenly and had blank or very little in spots and a delicious tasting and ample qty. In other spots. When I did get a bite that was balanced... wow! Then not so wow for the next bite or two. I really wanted this to be better but I was simply underwhelmed... I think that had I eaten in vice Carry out l, and if my suspicion is correct... I believe I would have had a fresh skin and base.... hopefully even a more consistent pie.
