In May 2018, we moved from DC to NYC. We had all our stuff packed away in a completely full 10' x 10' storage unit with some additional boxes in a friend's basement. This was our first interstate move, and we had no good idea about how much stuff we had (in terms of pounds or cubic feet) or how big of a moving truck we'd fill. We described the stuff we had the best we could (how much furniture, how many boxes, how we'd filled a 16' truck when moving into the storage unit, etc.) to about a half dozen movers. We got quotes that were wildly different, from below $2000 to above $6000. Some were just estimates, with the final bill based on how much the filled truck actually weighed. Some were based on two day moves, with a fee for a night of storage. The price difference of over 300% was staggering. With AK Movers, we got a quick response back from Art. He laughed about our worry that we'd fill an 18' truck based on our former 1 bedroom + den apartment. He was quick with a quote, for a fixed price that was much, much lower than all the others for a one-day move from DC to NYC. We were assured by Art's knowledge of how much space the stuff from a 1.5-bedroom apartment can fill, the DC storage units, and the trials of driving and parking in NYC. We made the booking with a $100 down payment by credit card. For the next two weeks, we still worried that we'd have too way much stuff, and we'd have to leave things in storage in DC until we could make our way back in a few weeks. Finally, the day of: we planned to meet Art and two other movers at our storage unit in DC at 7 am. We arrived with a U-Haul cargo van with the stuff we collected from a friend's at 6:45. Art was already there waiting with a crew of three other movers. They quickly and efficiently brought everything from the 2nd floor storage unit to the truck. And the crew was very adaptable when there were hiccups at the storage facility. They were done by 8:30. And, like Art said, our stuff barely filled half his 18' truck. We drove in a separate car up to NYC, and we met Art at our new apartment building. Art beat us by about 15 minutes, arriving around 1:00. He drove up with one other guy, so we had a total crew of two to unload in NYC. Art and his mover made quick work of unloading the truck, loading the elevator, and bringing our furniture, boxes, odds and ends to our 4th floor apartment. They had to carry up our couch because it couldn't fit in the elevator. Unloading was done by 3 pm. Overall, this was no-nonsense, efficient, well-priced move from DC to NYC. Art didn't pray on our lack of knowledge about how much our things actually weigh. The flat fee made us much more comfortable with our decision to go with AK. The move was quick and the movers respectful. We paid cash, for a 5% discount. I highly recommend AK. Finally, another piece of information that varies widely: how to tip interstate movers. I've read webpages that range from $20/mover/day to 20% of the price. We ended up tipping a tad over 20%, because we were so pleased with the move and movers, and we thought the flat fee price was so reasonable. read more

I've moved many times in the past and have hired local movers, but this was by far the worst experience that I've ever encountered. In fact, this is the only one that's been negative. I planned my move a month in advance and dealt with the owner, whose name is Art. Initially, he seemed nice, but I guess he had to be since he was trying to get my business. After I made my $50 deposit to lock in the date, that's when the attitude started. I lived in a high rise complex and they required certain insurance. Even though he's moved other tenants in the building before, he acted like he didn't know what they needed. So I asked him to contact the management office to see what they needed. He then proceeded to lecture me about how long he's been doing this. This is the point where I should have dumped his ass. (Art, I know you're going to read this; advice, don't lecture your customers. No one gives a flying f*ck about how long you've been in this business.) The day prior to the move, I had to call him to confirm that we were still on, even though he had told me that he'd be calling me. Day of the move, the moving guys were on time. They were nice, but I was concerned if they were physically able to perform the task, and on budget. My concerns were confirmed, see below. My condo was a 2-bedroom, 2-bath. We had most things packed in boxes, other than large items like the couch and beds. The distance to the new house was approximately 8 miles, mostly freeway. The loading elevator was reserved. All they had to do was load and pack the larger items for transport. A move that should have lasted 5-6 hours ended up being 10.5 hours!!! On top of that, the truck that was used ended up being too small, thus two trips. Then they wanted to charge me for extras such as bubble wraps and tape, when it stated in the email confirmation that everything was included in the quote. Told them there was no way in hell I was paying for that after you're ripping me off with the extended time. Art decides that he's going to give me an attitude and I just tell him to pound sand. As I wrote previously, the actual moving guys were nice, but I wasn't paying for them to be nice. As a matter of fact, my wife got them large whopper meals to eat. My beef is with the owner, Art. He's a pompous ass that doesn't understand customer service. There are very few things that I regret in life, but this is definitely one of those times. read more

We recently used AK Movers for our move from Herndon VA to just outside of Philadelphia. I researched and called a ton of different movers, and between the great price and the good reviews decided on AK. At the time of the move I was 8 months pregnant and knew my husband would be working out of town on the day of the move, so I wanted to make sure we were hiring a good company. The 3 men that were sent for our move were on time, polite, and worked very hard to get our things moved carefully and in a timely manner. All of our furniture was wrapped well, and once they moved everything into the new house they unwrapped and re-assembled all of our furniture perfectly. Instead of just putting furniture where ever was easiest - they actually placed it all efficiently in each room, literally setting up the rooms for me. One of the things I was most worried about was being stuck with a bill at the end of the job that was completely different from the estimate I was given - however this was not at all a problem. The estimate I was given was exactly what my bill was. The price was also by far the lowest I found in the area, I called and received at least 6 or 7 different quotes - all of which were 2, 3, even 4+ times as much! I have no idea why you would pay 4 times as much! I literally have no complaints about our experience with this company. I would recommend them to friends and family, so much so that I went online and wrote a review, which I've never taken the time to do for a company before! read more

I moved already four times and I can tell the last one with AK Movers was the best. The easiest and smooth. The movers was professionals, they packed all my furniture very well and they was working fast. My main concern was big and bulky sofa. When we purchased it, the movers who brought it to the house, was not able to pass through the stairs up to the living room. They very hardly scratched the walls and made two holes on the drywall and still was not able to bring this sofa up. Finally I have to call someone to take my window out and we got that sofa on the ropes through the window. It took us over three hours to get that sofa. Plus I have to repair the walls and put the window back. So, I was ready to remove window again to get sofa out. But the guy from AK Movers named Dmitriy told me do not do that, they will try to go trough the stairs first.... And.... I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT !!! They got this sofa out the stairs just less then for 10 minutes. Yes, it was tight and they was turning the sofa somehow on the stairs but they did it!!! Also, I have one big dresser and entertainment center which was very hard to get in to the house when I moved. I was about to mention to the movers about it but forgot and I was so surprised to see those pieces already in the truck. Fast and simple! Five stars !!! Recommended !!! read more

I wanted to share my experience to a degree with people who might be wondering about different services. I have found moving to be a traumatic time and event in life, minimally bringing a lot of anxiety and stress leading up to it, and getting through it. I found myself needing to move recently, and after looking at a handful of companies, turned to AK for their help in doing so. I had a difficult place to move from, as I had moved into it on my own with help from family and friends, and a lot of stuff to move. I wasn't going too far, but the haul of all my stuff out of there was grueling. They showed up early even ! I contacted Art through his website, after he had been recommended to me by a friend. He was offering a great price, which doesn't always equal great service, but in this case it certainly did. He explained all of the pricing to me in his email, and he also offered boxes, but I didn't use his boxes. He called me the day before the move to reconfirm. On the day of the move his two movers, Alex and Konstantin arrived 10 minutes early, I showed them everything that needed to be moved, and they got to work. They were so friendly, but they worked very hard and were fast. We had to make a last minute stop at another place about 1/2 an hour away, and Art had said that would be no problem. Alex and Konstantin didn't have any problem with it either. It was a somewhat difficult move into my apartment building, because they couldn't park their truck too close to the entrance, but they never complained, and they were very efficient in getting everything into the apartment just where I wanted things. AK Movers is definitely a great moving service! We were looking to move from our small 1 bedroom apartment in Woodbridge, VA to Wilmington, Delaware. You should be aware that the moment you start looking for moving services, 70% of the calls you get are from agents, and NOT ACTUAL MOVERS. They will take your order, put it up on a message board and wait for some moving company to pick up the order. The agent will then add a surcharge on top of this and present you with a quote. Needless to say, this is more expensive and unreliable, compared to a company that actual owns their own moving vehicles. AK Movers have their own trucks, equipment and work very quickly. They arrived ahead of schedule, and loaded about 25 boxes + furniture in 1.5 hrs. We couldn't believe how quick they were! The owner, Art, is a straight shooter and will not try to add any additional charges on top of what he quotes. I would definitely recommend them as they are dependable, efficient and very affordable in a marketplace that's crowded by expensive service providers. Highly recommended! read more

Great pricing, fast, and professional... what more do you need? I have used Ak Movers twice. Once for an in-town move (rockville to s.s.) and also for an out of state move (Md to Fl), and both times I was extremely pleased. First of all, dealing with Art is a pleasure as he will get the details of your move and work the best price for what you need to accomplish. He is flexible and knowledgable, and works to make sure the customer is happy first. The moving teams that show up are amazingly fast and efficient, especially if you have your stuff packed when they arrive - they just go on a walk through to get an eye for what is being moved and then BOOM, super fast it goes into the truck. And packed well into the truck too, I must add; it's not like they just throw everything in. Furniture is placed in tight and secure, and lighter boxes on top, etc. Nothing was broken. I just moved from DC to MD and my moving experience with AK movers was better than I could possibly imagine. I called the owner, we set up the dates and time, he was incredibly polite and professional. His guys were just great-friendly, professional and very strong. They arrived just on time, loaded all my stuff (there were 34 boxes, 4 big suitcases + furniture)to their truck within an hour, and arrived to the new apartment within 40 minutes as well. Turns out, the new building did not have the elevator, so the guys had to move everything upstairs just using their strength. It was very impressive and did a great job. Nothing was scratched, destroyed, everything was put in places and once again, it was great dealing with them in general. Note: for all of that, they did not charge me much, I know for a fact that for the same job I would have ended up spending more with other moving companies. This is my third move with AK Movers (which I used to know as Smooth Movers). They do a great job every time (2009, 2011, 2014). They are as efficient as they come. Professional, no nonsense, strong as hell and focused on getting the job done. Art, the owner, is friendly and pleasant to work with. For my most recent move, I had a (jam-packed) one bedroom apartment, and moved into a 2 level townhouse less than a mile away. I had everything already in boxes (A TON of boxes), plus a heavy bedroom set, dining set, and lots of clothes, books, food etc. Art and his second guy spent 2 hours of non stop moving, down a flight of stairs and across a parking lot, to get everything loaded. The unloading took about the same time, again with no breaks. In the end, it was worth every penny I paid them. They wrapped all my furniture and mattresses and were careful with boxes marked fragile. Barely any marks at all, and nothing broken. These guys are fantastic! Easy move all around, from the time I called to schedule my move through the last box brought into the house. The owner, Art, called me the same day that I requested a quote and gave me a realistic (and extremely reasonable) quote. He also said that he'd call the day before the move to confirm, which he did. The day of the move, the guys showed up exactly on time and were extremely professional and polite, not to mention EXTREMELY fast. Not only that, but after packing my house for 5 hours, they drove 9 hours and unloaded the truck for 3.5 hours SAME DAY! Absolutely worth every cent that was paid to them. By far the best moving experience I've ever had - which says a lot bc moving sucks! But AK made it quick and painless. I moved from a studio in North Bethesda to a studio in Philly. Art provided a quote, and one of the deciding factors to go with them was that it was a flat fee and NOT hourly, which was just better for my peace of mind since I would be navigating it alone and DID not want to have to argue with anyone about moving too slowly! With the flat fee I trusted that they would only take the time they needed! AK Movers' owner Art and his staff were extremely fast, on time, professional, friendly and considerate. All fragile items were carefully wrapped. It took Art and his staff less than 2 and half an hour to move all my home belongings from Kentlands to Monrovia (1 hour loading, half an hour driving and 1 hour unloading). Since the minimum is 3 hours, Art kindly offered to dissemble and assemble my bed frame at my living room so that it can be moved to master bedroom. I was impressed by AK Movers' service. I opted for full packing and move service. Art visited my place the next day and gave me an accurate quote. Due to escalating CoVid-19 situation, I had to advance my move date. I have used Smooth Movers (AK Movers) three times in the last 10 years. Every time they have been extremely professional, efficient, careful and extremely fair priced. Art (the owner) is responsive over both email and phone and is part of the entire process from beginning to end. The day of our most recent move the movers showed up 15 minutes early and did not miss a beat loading up our entire DC townhouse. Art (the owner) came through in the clutch by agreeing to move us on less than 24 hrs notice AND on a busy Saturday. Turned out that our closing appointment on our new home didn't happen and we weren't able to settle on that Friday. I called Art and he had no problems rescheduling us for Tuesday - with no fees! The two men arrived 10 minutes early and were very nice and extremely efficient. They worked really hard given a very difficult sized couch - taking off both doors and not getting frustrated - and again trying to get it into our new home. If I could add a sixth star, I would. We contracted with AK Movers for a long relocation from Alexandria, VA to Cape Cod. Art (owner) came out and gave us a no-hassle single price, which was below other quotes we had obtained. We packed what we could at home and his crew came out and handled the rest. It wasn't easy. We had some heavy pieces that had to come from our basement. To my astonishment, they got everything out. And did I mention the piano? They did a great job wrapping our furniture and helping us with considerable box packing, particularly the attention they showed when handling our dishes and doo-dads from a china cabinet. I moved in the same apartment community but to another building with AK Movers about a month ago. From 1 bedroom to 2 bedroom apartment with just average or less amount of stuff. (I asked them after the moving and they said "average") After making an appointment, a few days later I had to change the moving date to 10 days later and everything was set up fine with them. It took 3.5 hours, which means 30 minutes additional charge, but I am happy with it because my husband didn't have to work hard to carry things. Overall, I don't think they are fantastic or perfect like super hero's moving but I could have a good departure at our new home thanks to their nice attitude and the reasonable moving time and price with no additional charge and no damaged stuff. read more
