Without a doubt one of the best places that has excellent "value for money" lunch combos. I LOVE their combination plates which come with your choice of protein (chicken/ salmon/ pork/ beef) with miso soup, tempura, rice and a slaw. The grilled teriyaki chicken and fried pork cutlet are my favorite. These folks know their tempura. Always crisp, non-greasy, light, and well seasoned. Comes with 2 shrimp and a variety of veggies. I really do like the cabbage slaw. Adds an element of freshness to the dish. No matter when I go there I invariably order the combo plate for lunch. Two stars for the food, which was delicious and well-presented. The service was really disappointing, particularly given the upscale vibe this restaurant seems to want to have. The music was an overly loud live guitar player covering songs from Disney movies? I recognized "Beauty and the Beast" and "If I Only Had a Brain", so that was weird and out of place, but set the theme for the service we received. I would like to first note that I have worked in the luxury hospitality industry for almost a decade and I cannot say how appalled I would be if anyone received service like this at my place of work. Very disappointing and we will not be back, even though we live close by and frequently eat at Solano establishments. To start, I had made a reservation via Opentable for 5 at 7:45pm. Upon arriving right on time, we were told they had no record of our reservation. I showed them in my app and my email confirmation of the reservation but the hostess, who seemed inexperienced and overwhelmed, repeated that they didn't have our reservation and we would have to wait, but assured us she would try to seat us quickly. Our entire party wasn't there yet anyway, so we thought a few minutes delay wouldn't be too bad, but I was frustrated about them not having my reservation on record. As I waited, I saw another email had come in at 7:10pm, thanking me for my reservation, indicating it was listed as completed by the restaurant at that time. I showed this to the hostess who reviewed their system and saw they had given our reservation to another group at 7pm. She apologized and said they'd get us seated as soon as possible. We were finally sat at about 8:15pm. At about 8:20pm, a waitress came up and greeted us, and then stared at us awkwardly, even after I requested a few more minutes to make our decisions, until we begrudgingly and hastily gave her our food order. It was our first time at the restaurant and we weren't sure about portion sizes (eg which were small plates, how many would a small plate feed, how many we should order etc), but just ordered a couple of things each. It was not a good follow up to the reservation situation. A few minutes later, the server brought our requested waters and two of the drinks we had ordered. The water she placed in front of me came in a chipped and cracked glass that luckily my sister noticed as I was picking it up to drink. When she came back with the third of the four drinks we had ordered (the fourth came a few minutes later), I asked her for a new glass of water, showing her the chip and crack. She just said ok and looked at me like I was being really high maintenance. Finally our food started being served at around 8:40pm. I say started because the food came out in a weird and drawn out order. First, edamame and miso soup for those who had ordered it. Then the tempura my sister and I were splitting, followed by my dad's combo plate. My sister's boyfriend's salmon came next, then his salad. Then the pork belly and cod my sister and I had ordered. Then a dish none of us had ordered, which we had to tell the server wasn't ours (she just continued to look annoyed, like we were again being high maintenance by not taking an order that wasn't ours). We then had to remind her about my dad's sushi, and my husband's sushi and spicy miso ramen. A few minutes later, the server returns with a bowl of miso soup, not spicy miso ramen, so we remind her again that it's ramen, and we still haven't received the sushi. She returned a few minutes later with the sushi, and we reminded her again of the ramen. I believe the ramen came out somewhere around 9:10, but by this time I wasn't even paying attention, I just kind of wanted to leave. My sister asked to see the dessert menu, of which the server brought one copy for the five of us. Luckily we had already reviewed it previously, and my husband already knew what he wanted. No one else ordered anything, because we had some questions about the mochi, but were a little too burnt out on the service to ask. We ended up getting a bill for over $200, no offer of anything comped for the inconveniences, not even the teas or the one dessert. We didn't complain, just paid and left. This place is very nice. I went here a few days ago for dinner and the decor was lovely, the mood friendly, and the food delicious. Later at night, there are mostly adult couples enjoying dinner. The light in here is very gentle and dim and the way AKEMI is set up demands quiet conversation. It was a romantic affair. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgable about the food they offered. I ordered a few dishes I didn't like (a whole squid, a shrimp pancake with bonito), but that wasn't for want of their preparation... They just weren't my taste. Everything was done well. The sushi rolls are particularly great! I would recommend coming here again, although the menu is on the pricier side (probably because of the clientele they attract, which is totally fair). Tip: the dishes here are on the smaller side, but that makes them perfect for sharing. A must go. read more

I've been going to the restaurant for the past 4 years and my family basically orders the same thing every time we go. Not once have you gotten our order correct, but we eat it anyways. Also, the order in which menus, drinks, food, check ins etc has never been consistent. Some days, it was pretty hectic but nothing beyond crazy, but today, we were the only ones there and we retrieved our own menus and our order was still incorrect :( I hope you take this feedback and make adjustments. My friends and I met several years ago and almost from the start we bonded over our love of Japanese fare, particularly sushi. So it quickly became a tradition that every time we got together, we would make a point to go to a different sushi restaurant and stuff ourselves silly. This occasion was slightly different in that we were celebrating a friend's engagement, so we wanted something special to take her and her fiancé out to celebrate this past October. They had passed by this restaurant on Solano a few times and thought it might be worth checking out, and so we did. Upon arrival, the atmosphere was decidedly upscale with both industrial touches (concrete floors, metal chairs) as well as more natural elements (wooden ceilings, tables) that meshed well. It was also pretty chilly temperature wise, and considering I'm rarely cold, I was glad I had a sweater. We were seated quickly, but because the initial reception was not overly warm nor inviting, I was a bit uncertain as to what to expect from the service. Thankfully our servers demonstrated a fair knowledge of the menu and were generally attentive, though there were a few times we waited quite a while for dishes, and we did have to ask once for a water refill. Inconsistencies. We ordered several different rolls, nigiri and sashimi options and enjoyed most of them; the fish is certainly fresh and most were buttery, melt in your mouth pieces. I wouldn't mind going back to try some of their kitchen items such as their ramen or the sake yaki to see how those items fare. It is not a cheap night out, but what higher-end sushi place is? So to start the fish was delicious...but I'm old school from the ages where you sat at the bar and conversered with the sushi chefs.... that's half the fun! But tonight on our wedding anniversary we had to go through the waitress while seated at the bar...we offered our chefs some sake on us which they declined and they basically didn't interact with us the entire time, appearing too busy to focus on other orders..no personality or personal touch. We told the waitress it was our anniversary, no acknowledgement from staff on a rather large bill. We miss the myuki days! Bummer we won't be back anytime soon read more

So my office has ordered from this restaurant many times, but last night was my first time eating in the restaurant! Took hubby there cause he loves food.... especially when fish and rice are on the menu! Sat at the sushi bar cause they were super busy!! So we got 3 rolls!! One was off of their specials list called Paradise and that roll was huge!! Hubby's favorite cause it's topped with mangos! He also ordered the Lion King and I got the Philadelphia roll deep fried... yummy cream cheese just melts in your mouth! But that Lion King roll was on point!!!! Very cute ambiance, clean and romantic. Very good vibes when we walked in. Service was nice, but the food wasn't that great. 1. Toro special- a hand roll with "toro" fish, this was hard to eat. The fish had a bad after taste, like the fish was old! Not a good start.. 2. Chirashi (traditional)- presentation was nice, fish was OK, but the seaweed was disgusting. I had to spit it out bc of the fishy after taste. 3. Spicy miso ramen- this dish was great! Noodles were cooked al dente, soup base was delicious, wasn't too salty and wasn't too thick. The chicken was a bit dry but that was the least of my concerns. 4. Bay scallop- nothing too fancy or extravagant. The scallop on top was actually cold... I thought most bay scallops were baked ? Can't really comment on the food, because we never managed to get any. We arrived about 6:05pm, and they were about half full, with at least three waitstaff. After about 5 minutes, someone finally came to the greater stand to seat us. After about ten minutes of waiting, with absolutely no acknowledgement from the waitresses that we were there, we overheard the gentleman at the next table. He had grabbed (figuratively) a waitress walking by and told her that he was giving up waiting for the rest of his order and just wanted the check. After being in the restaurant for fifteen minutes without even water to show for it, we thought that was a bad enough sign and decided to cut our losses and leave. read more

This restaurant might offer great dining experiences--I don't know--but they are oblivious about reservations. A week in advance, I made a reservation on Open Table for 11:45 a.m. on a Sunday. When my party arrived, the door was locked, the restaurant dark. I telephoned and got a message saying that their message machine was full. So we went somewhere else to eat. Later, I stopped in and told the hostess what had happened. She said, "Oh yes, I saw your reservation for 11:45, but we don't open until noon." The ambiance is super tasteful and stylish, with perfectly low lighting, reclaimed wood, and a unique V-shaped sushi bar. Plus, the service is always hospitable - you can feel the passion they put into the place. We typically go for ramen -- they offer 2 types: Tonkotsu or Spicy Miso (both $14). I can't comment on the level of authenticity, but it always hits the spot on a cold night, and the portions are generous. Only strange thing is that they don't cut the egg in half, so it's slippery and awkward to eat. I've also ordered sushi rolls (super fresh), grilled whole squid appetizer (slightly on the chewy side, but good flavor), and the spider roll (more appetizer size, with 5 pieces). Awesome place! I came here with a few friends for their soft opening and was blown away. First off, the decor is super modern and sophisticated. The lighting is a bit dimmer for a more intimate feel, perfect for date night. Second, the prices are super fair. For such a well furnished place, I was pleased to see how affordable the options were. Third, everything was well portioned and tasted great. We tried both the ramens, a few rolls, and a few of the appetizers but the dish that blew me away was the dessert. I had the yuzu panna cotta and it was like no panna cotta I've ever had before. It was super light, tart, and had a great array of textures. All in all, I would hands down come again. The owner was extremely friendly and checked up on our experience periodically. This is a really beautiful and cute restaurant on the Solano stroll area. The ambiance here is really nice, but the food and service could use some refinement. Good place to take guests or parties. Here was my experience: As you get in, you are promptly greeted and seated. Within two seconds of getting seated, the server will come to pester you to order drinks. I told them I needed a moment. Two seconds later they come back. The place isn't packed or anything so I didn't really understand the rush. This tug-of-war happened at two second increments for a good 5 minutes until I gave up looking at the drinks and got water so that I could get the server off my back. When I was ready to order food, there was no one around to take my order and I waited 5-10 minutes to get my order taken. Ridiculous. Also, when I asked questions about the menu, they were not knowledgeable and weren't willing to listen or find answers. Possibly due to some English language barriers, I'm not sure. The service was poor, so on to the food - which was just as bad. I tried their ramen and was extremely disappointed - the bowl was large and it had way too much noodles. The bamboo shoots were mushy and the pork was... definately not chasu. The broth was really salty and seemed like it came from instant ramen packages. The rolls were ok - think Sushi takeout. There was a lot of rice and the flavor combinations seemed good on paper but were pretty meh. It seems like Korean style sushi more than Japanese sushi. I appreciated that they filled my water constantly and the ambiance of the place. The food was edible, but not delicious. We stumbled upon AKEMI for late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Initially we wanted to try the restaurant next door but it closed. Our second choice would be Japanese cuisine so we walked in here without hesitation. I was a little bit overwhelmed by the ambience (it looks kinda hipster and modern fancy), but turned out the pricing is very reasonable (comparing to SF where I live). We really enjoyed the 1) seaweed salad, 2) pork cutlet with rice and tons of tempura, 3) Unagi don (grilled eel with rice) and 4) Salmon sushi. Service was good and not too pushy. Our server kept coming back to fill up iced water for us which was nice - given the fact that it was a freakin' HOT day. The perfect modern, trendy Japanese restaurant with wonderful food! We were given the opportunity to their private soft opening, and I am so impressed! Let's start with some first impressions. They have a large window facing the street and you will be amazed with their interior decorations. You will also be wondering why you're not inside! Once inside, you are given the choice to sit at the sushi bar or at their tables! For larger parties, they have a semi-private seating area; which is perfect for birthdays! For food, all the items were reasonably price and came in very decent servings. Appetizers: Okonomiyaki ($11), Karage ($7, ordered two because it was that good), Mekabetsu ($7.5, brussel sprouts), and the Kakuni ($14, pork belly). All the appetizers were very delicious! If I had to choose my favorite, it would be very difficult because I truly enjoyed them all! I do recommend the brussel sprouts (mekabetsu), they taste like no other brussel sprouts dishes I've had (if you're a brussel sprout hater, this might be a game changer for you). Entree: Spicy Miso Ramen, Tonkatsu Ramen, Rainbow Roll, two unnamed rolls (because I didn't get a chance to take a picture of their roll menu!), and nigiris for my friend. First of all, I have very high standards when it comes to the eggs for ramen. (a.k.a. They can't be well done!) When I saw my friend bite into her egg, MY EYES WERE WIDE OPEN, JAW DROPPED. I ordered a separate order of the egg just to try it! It was as good as it looks. Perfectly shoyu seasoned and perfectly cooked egg, it was amazing. The ramen broth was flavorful and the amount of toppings it came with was surprisingly a lot! The fish for the rolls were very fresh and their choice of combinations were unique but paired very well with each other. The mango roll surprised me the most! Mango, cucumbers, and inari, that's it. So simple, yet it worked so well. Oh, and that dessert. The Yuzu Panna Cotta was definitely a treat. It was absolutely decadent. The topping had fresh strawberries, candied yuzu pieces, and some popped or deep-fried rice pieces, it created a splendid balance with the smooth and creamy lightly flavored yuzu panna cotta. A must get! Overall, I look forward to coming again! I would love to bring other friends of mine to try Akemi. The owner was a very sweet and wonderful women who explained in details in her creation of Akemi! This place is average - C to be precise. I came here after the raving reviews and looking upon the pre-fixe restaurant week menu. Service 3/5 - workers are overwhelmed and place is busy, while it takes even longer to get seated.. BF ordered two rolls - Kamikaze and titanic role... We tried it together to be surprised at how average the roll tasted; no tang, no unique flavors or very fresh fish for the matter... Wasn't a fan of the sauces drizzled on the sushi either. Pre-fixe - first off, my spinach salad was tough, cold and the sauce drizzled over was too sweet for my taste 2.5/5, the Gyoza was nothing special and I did not appreciate that the dish came out lukewarm... 3/5; my akemi roll is a low carb roll however it tasted completely bland that I could not bear to finish 2/5; finally the dessert was weird but that may be that I'm not a fan of panna cotta - the yuzu did grow on to me after a few bites but would never order again 3/5. I ate here on Saturday, 9/15, at 1 PM. The food here is great, the ambiance is lovely, and parking is abundant. That said, the hostess here is easily one of the worst I have ever seen. From staying in her corner and just using her phone, to basically refusing to acknowledge us when we're trying to pay our bill (was she trying to force us to do a dine and dash?), to refusing to greet the guests that come in and show them to the table, what a horrible experience. Everything here is good, but they definitely need someone new as a hostess. read more

The ambiance is amazing, and the decor is super modern and chic. The best part is, the food is just as good as the decor! Ordered: Seaweed Salad-Not your average seaweed salad. It's the perfect balance of dressing, seaweed, and vegetables, and it's light enough to allow room for more food. Akemi Roll-I was really impressed. I love that it was wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber rather than rice. Perfect for those who want something a little lighter Toro Toro Roll-Fatty tuna was really fresh and flavorful. SO GOOD. Himachi Kama-The perfect amount of crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside Titanic Roll-probably one of the best rolls I've ever had. Just dined here for dinner and had a fantastic experience. When you walk in, the style and decor are quite impressive. Later I found out that the tables including the long table in the private room are all from the same recycled tree. There appears to be tons of interesting, layered factors that went in to the interior design of this place. Next, we were served salad with a yummy citrus dressing, fresh sashimi - great quality, two delicious sushi rolls (evil roll and dragon roll), the beef short ribs (SO tender fall-off-the-bone!) and kobe beef. I feel like we got a great, well-rounded sample of the menu. My two favorite dishes after trying everything were by far the Evil roll and the kobe beef - both such great flavor! To top it all off the panna cotta dessert was to die for! It was topped with fresh strawberries and candied lemon... sooo good!! For everything we had the price was totally reasonable!! Not to mention we tried the sake sampler of 3 which was a good way to compare high end sake and see which one I liked. I personally liked the middle ome called Mirror of Truth (?) Or something like that. Service was speedy, staff were very friendly, ambiance was perfectly chic and the crowd came in and filled the restaurant by 6:30ish on a Sun night. It was the godzilla roll, not that great... but it was ok. The nigiri was decent, not the best I've had, I felt like there was very little rice. My friend ordered the Spicy pork belly ramen... I should have ordered that one, It was honestly so delicious from what I tried, and I'm not a big fan of pork. The waitress Miya was so sweet! She said that they make the broth in house, and it tasted so fresh, the egg was cooked perfectly with yoke still inside! My friends and I loved loved loved the kama (neck of a yellow tail). It was juicy and had a taste of being BBQ'd, which was great. The rainbow roll was nice. Especially because they didn't put shrimp on it but rather yummy fish. Their tempura was too greasy. So was the pancake dish. I couldn't eat much of them. Their rice wasn't that good either. They should use Kokuho Rose rice. Their prices are pretty steep for the quality. If I come back, it will be for the kama. read more

I have tried Akemi twice- the fish is very fresh, the menu items are inventive and tasty. I was visiting last week and the service was a little slow, I had to ask to order drinks after sitting for over 10 minutes without a greeting - one server seemed a little conceited and judgey but some of the other personnel made up for her slight attitude. This has been one of my most favorite restaurants on the Solano strip. Their ramen was amazing and their sushi was fresh and fulfilling. The ambiance is real relaxed playing contemporary electronic indie music. The lighting allows your you to really take in the experience which is Akemi.
