Omakase - everything was good Favorites - A5 wagyu - Sake salmon - scallop - Hokkaido uni Good - bluefin tuna - buri/hamachi - Toro - freshwater eel Good - shrimp - young eel - fluke - cucumber salad Meh - Tamago (egg) - ikura/salmon roe + quail egg My favorite part was hearing about chefs life experiences and the nuances of what differentiate Good sushi from others. Overall a great experience one time for the one time, but can't be eating like this every night

It's such a hidden gem esp in random ass El Cerrito haha. If you don't know about this place then you'd probably never just stop by here. There are only 2 dinner seatings 7p and 9p all at the bar. There is only Chef Aki and the lady running orders. I like that they offer different omakase options: A - 12 pieces; B - 14 pieces; C - 16 pieces. My advice, go all in and get the most sushi you can get, that way you try everything Chef Aki has to offer. It was a very long dining experience and I'm not sure if it's because of age or that's just how it is, but we didn't leave until 9:30pm and our reservation started at 7pm. There was a lot of dead time in between too so the time felt hella slow. The miso soups were bomb and not your traditional miso powder. Even the seaweed salad wasn't wakame it was actual seaweed. Chef Aki will explain every fish and show off his knowledge of what part of fish, why it's the best, etc. His speak softly so sometimes it was hard to hear him. At first, he was picking on everyone a little aggressively (kinda funny if you're not too sensitive), but he was just teaching us how to properly use chopsticks and not to ask for more wasabi or soy sauce... haha! He'll also explain the difference between the American way of sushi vs traditional. If you order sake, give him a shot! He'll happily drink with you and it makes the dining experience that much more enjoyable haha. Some of the best fish I've ever had and I wouldn't expect anything less from an omakase. It's definitely one of the more affordable ones so hopefully you can snag a reservation.

Aki San is a legend. Come in and have a try before he retires! The best omakase in east bay (at least)!

    1. Book the next available reservation on yelp. Look out for last minute cancellations. 2. Order C Course - 16 pieces. Don't worry, you will finish it. It is worth every dollar. 3. Repeat steps 1-2. This is by far the best omakase sushi I've had (in this price range). What a dinner!

The food was good. Similar to other Omakase we had in the bay. The 3.5 hr service for the 16 piece of sushi is a bit too long to enjoy a meal. We got there at 7:30pm and didn't leave until 10:50pm.

I came here for the omakase. If I came here again, I'd probably order a la carte, since there were only a few items I particularly liked. I'd recommend the smoked salmon, scallop, and california roll. Best california roll I've ever had. The fish is definitely worth the price, and you won't find an experience like this anywhere else in East Bay, but I wouldn't recommend coming here for omakase if you... 1) ...have been to a more expensive omakase place before. Again, the sushi here is definitely worth the price, but it is noticeably not as good as more pricey omakase in San Francisco. If you've never tried omakase, you'll be wowed, but otherwise, it's probably worth dishing out a bit extra to go to SF. 2) ...are rebellious. My friend was lectured for 10 minutes because he did not use soy sauce like the chef asked. If you're super scared of disobeying authority like me, you'll be fine.

Aged miso soup with hamachi - really good. Get it. Worth the $10!

Tried omakase and it's very fresh than traditional sushi and sashimi. Hoping to schedule one soon.

Can we bring our own sake bottle?

HOW can I get a reservation? Every time I check on yelp, there is no availability, anytime.

Last time I made my reservation three months out. The trick is to keep checking to see if there are cancellations that you can pick up the reservation earlier.

Are you able to accommodate a vegan in a party?

Sorry, we do not have vegetarian’s menu. We specialize in fish and shellfish nigiri sushi.

During these Covid times. If we're a party of 5. Would we be the only party/group in the restaurant for dinner?

Yes, if nobody else booked the 6th seat.

I know they just reopened. the dinner usually fits 6 people. If I have a party of 4, will we be the only people in the restaurant? Or will the other 2 seats be filled by random people?

The other 2 seats will be also filled with social distances at the long sushi bar.

Is this place an actual sushi buffet. Where you pay once and can order however many you want?

    No...but sushi is great!

Mugunghwa has their own parking lot, which is nice since parking is not the easiest in this area when it gets busy. The restaurant is a pretty good size compared to the strip mall just north of this location. They could handle a larger group, no problem. We were a party of two and ordered a combo along with some wings. The food: The banchan here is S-Tier. Everything is so flavorful and there is a lot of diversity. I'm including the SSAM as banchan, which includes lettuce, thinly sliced, pickled daikon, thin pieces of raw garlic, pickled jalapeno and onion, and a gochujang based sauce. I really enjoyed the bulgogi with the sides. I wasn't exactly sure how to eat it, but I put a little bit of everything that came with the SSAM along with some rice and bulgogi and it was delicious. We ordered an 8 piece wing that they were able to split half Soy Garlic and half Spicy. It was nice they offer half/half on such a small order. Crunch was good, but not excellent. As part of the combo, we got the Seollongtang, a thinly sliced beef brisket soup and purple rice. The soup was neutral and not super beefy. It looked about right, but maybe it could have used a little more salt. Overall, really impressed with the selection and the complimentary side dishes here! Excited to find another solid Korean restaurant in the Bay Area.

Everyone that ate the bulgogi had diarrhea the next day. It's sad bc the flavors of the food here is actually very good and authentic (and I've gotten the hot tofu soup many times and that seems to be okay). If you look into the older reviews, you can see that there have been others complaining of getting food poisoned. I hope they take this issue seriously and look into their food handling practices. For health reasons I will not return back here unfortunately.

It appears to be popular with families as well. It was a Friday evening after 9pm, kind of late for us to eat very much but I needed something so we popped in. It was quiet, maybe three or four other tables. Our food server was patient as I looked over the fairly large menu. Ended up with some of my current faves: hamachi nigiri, California roll, yam roll, and salmon skin roll. Everything was thoughtful, well prepared, and delicious. It was just enough food and I was good for the night. On our second visit, my hubby and I brought my dad for lunch to celebrate his 88th birthday. It was pouring rain outside but we were fortunate to get parking right outside the door. We ended up sitting by the window which was the same table we sat at during our first visit. We ordered gyoza (6) for the table. We all ordered bento. Dad had the beef short ribs and California roll, hubby had the Vegetable tempura and California roll, I had the Saba shiyoyaki and hamachi sashimi. All three came with miso soup and salad. Everything was delicious. My fish was well seasoned and moist, dad's beef short ribs were tender, hubby's tempura was light and crisp. Lunch was very reasonably priced for all we ordered. I am definitely a fan of this place and look forward to dining here again.
