I was just at this nursery again today and they have an amazing selection plants. I love these small family owned nurseries since there are so few of them left. I found many succulents I would not have found at the big box stores, especially echeverias! They are super healthy and they are 20% off the already low price! As a family run business, they are very eager to help and approachable. I just got home with a few treasures and will definitely be going back for more! Yes, it's set up more like a whole seller, but you can get some really great deals here! Case in point; I found some huge, health maiden hair ferns there in 5 gallen pots for $15 and stopped off at my local home depot to price compare. All I found at hd was 1/2 gallon sizes for $10! This year we bought 10 silver sheens. To this day, only 2 survived. Aki told us there would be a limited guarantee on the ones they planted and none on the ones we planted. We were not informed that those trees should not have been planted in the summer. Aki sent their worker over to check on a couple of dying trees only to be told they were overwatered. We were told otherwise by other sources. Aki has done declined to do anything further regarding the loss of those trees (about $2000 worth). In as much as we would like to frequent the family owned business, we will certainly never again due to lack of guarantee and the gamble of loosing more and lack of knowledgeable support. read more

I have been a loyal customer to this nursery since I discovered it 5 months ago. This a very-well kept family business. The owners and their daughter are very knowledgable and helpful. The nursery encompasses a larger area than a regular Armstrong. They carry more varieties than big chains too. They have a fairly large selection of water-wise plants and beautiful potteries. They also have a bonsai section and a big landscape plant section. But be aware if you are coming here to buy orchids this is not the place. Aki does not carry orchids. The price is fairly low, almost always 20% or lower than big chain nurseries. They often offer additional discounts at the check out. I have purchased a black Mondo grass, an osmanthus tree and an E. Nodulosa from them so far. All plants are healthy and still flourishing today. I first encountered black Mondo grass at Roger's Garden but gawked at their price. I have not seen this plant in any other nurseries until I stumbled upon them at Aki. For the same pot size of black Mondo grass, Aki's price was only 40% of that of Roger's. Don't forget to ask for the care tips at the check out! As long as you ask, the owners and their daughter will explain to you in details. read more

This nursery has plenty of established plants to choose from. A wide variety of succulents as well. They didn't have a flat of the ground cover I was looking for but Emily was willing to order it and have it available in a few days. She also said they have delivery service. I enjoyed the walk thru the plants and not have to walk over dirt and gravel as they have the area covered with easily walkable ground fabric (I was wearing heels). I have to say that this is indeed an off the beaten path kind place. Which seemed a bit unusual in a larger city such as HB. But our directions were decent and we managed to locate them quite easily. However, casual browsers need to be forewarned, this place is NOT set up for the uninformed plant person. This place has all the makings of a wholesale establishment that caters to professional landscapers. There is not a sign in sight anywhere to direct you around the nursery. Just rows and rows of plants that seem to go on forever. So unless you are extremely good at treasure hunting you have no choice but to try and track down someone to help you. Additionally, only a few plants here and there had any kind of tag indentifying what they were. The wife and I continually found ourselves holding something up and looking at the other for an answer. Just for kicks I looked at 12 identical plants and not a single one had an ID tag. However 1 of the 12 did have a small price sticker on the side of the pot so I guess all wasn't a total loss. Their staff seemed friendlly, (an employee did ask if we needed help) but when we inquired about fruit trees he said if they had any they would be "over by the office" However, after arriving at the office we were met by an older lady with an extremely thick accent who told us they didn't carry fruit trees. Frustrated, the wife and I left and headed over to Armstorng Garden Center a few blocks down the street. Morale of the story, this is an old school nursery setup in every sense of the word. If you know you stuff and don't mind searching around a bit for it, or you can come in with a shopping list to give to one of their enployees, I got the feeling there we deals to be had. Otherwise, if you are like me and the wife and enjoy casually browsing a place with good signage and clearly marked prices, this is not the place for you. read more

I called the place this morning searching for a specific Japanese plant (Japanese pepper tree called Sansho). They sold it out, but they put me on their list so that they can let me know when they get in the store. I still stopped by the store to see other plants in the afternoon. It was about 100 degrees outside, but the family welcomed us and showed me to the other plant I was looking for (Japanese ginger - Myoga). It is a Japanese family owned nursery (dad, mom, and daughter) and very well taken care of, and some of the prices were lower than other places. And, the mother gave me some summer veggies! Some people have complained here about the rudeness, but I think it's just a language barrier. If you are polite and show respect to them (don't visit right before they close), they will give you the tips how to take care of the plants. I rather go to a very knowledgeable person than somebody with a great service at this kind of place. I will come back very soon!! read more

I drive by here quite often, but never had the need to visit since my garden is quite complete. Unfortunately, I must say goodbye to my Calla Lilies which fell victim to my neighbor's careless gardener chopping off a tree. I came to Aki for replacements. This place is gigantic, it does not have a jeweled storefront like Armstrong's or warehouse-like Lowe's. Of the four times I visited, Emily - the owner's daughter helped me out. Knowing nothing much about some of the species, she was really patient in explaining everything to me. When in doubt, she yells Daddy! and a nice old man will come out, after conversing in Japanese, she will tell me what the guru said. I thought that was so cute. Besides being family owned, which is a plus in my dictionary, I love the fact that these are very honest people. I was going to pick some pink Camellias, when Emily suggested the red ones, because the pink ones didn't look too healthy. I was gonna pick up a pot of iceberg rose, when she told me probably not, again due to healthy issues. Every time I visited, there were contractor-looking man with trucks picking up big trees. The prices are just a teeny bit more than Lowe's or Home Depot, and way less than Armstrong's. Must come here if you are looking to redecorate your garden. read more

We came here for a rose bush the other week and found a lovely plant with yellow and cream roses. They helped us carry and load the rose bush into my car, and even laid a thick plastic tarp on my passenger seat so it wouldn't get dirty. They gave my two kids a small cactus plant each as well. I highly recommend this family owned business. From the minute I walked in, I felt genuinely welcomed. Everyone said hi with real smiles (and not in the forced way you get in more stores). I had my 5 year old with me and we were looking for a small orange tree. I was thinking of getting a 5 gallon plant but it was not in stock. The employee (I wish I got everyone's names) explained how the supplier has low stock and they tend to stock big box stores first. He said I should be able to find one at Home Depot. I really appreciated that he was more concerned in helping me find what I wanted than to make a sale. I ended up buying one of the 15 gallon orange trees they had in stock instead because I really wanted to support a family owned business over a chain store. While I was talking to an employee, an older gentleman (maybe the father of the family?) talked to my 5 year old and entertained her. A female employee even gifted my daughter a little succulent. I cannot get over how welcomed we both felt. Everyone was so kind. I never expected to leave a nursery so happy. This was just supposed to be an "errand" but we really enjoyed our time there. And of course the quality and selection of plants was amazing! I would HIGHLY recommend this nursery and will be coming back again! read more

went here to buy a satsuma mandarin orange tree. it was nice to go to a "real" nursery instead of the usual home depot, lowe's, etc. it's a pretty big nursery with a nice variety of plants, flowers and trees you might not find at the big box retailers. it's always nice to support a local, family owned business, while you're at it! prices were a little on the higher end but again, we're not talking a big chain so it was reasonable. they also have a 15% off coupon that comes in one of the local mailers - i've seen 1 every few months. read more

This is a great place to shop for plants. Emily and family (and staff) are friendly and very knowledgeable. I was looking for a certain kind of lavender (Lavandula x Intermedia du Provence). I went to various Home Depot and Lowe's stores in Irvine and Tustin. None of the employees knew what I was talking about. I checked with Armstrong Garden Centers in Irvine. They had no idea too what I was talking about until they looked it up in the computer. I checked with Green Thumb Nursery in El Toro. The sales person brought me to the Lavender area and said this is everything we have. I called Plant Depot, they knew what I was talking about, but did not have it. Then one day as I was driving on Alton avenue, I saw a sign "Aki Nursery". I drove into the parking lot and was thinking "what are the chances they will even have it". Right when I was greeted at the front, I asked do you have "Lavandula x Intermedia du Provence?". I was told immediately, "yes we do", and was brought over to where they had it. I've been going to this place ever since. They know their plants, they have a wide selection, and they are very friendly. read more

Emily was so helpful with suggestions as to which plants would work best with the conditions in our yard. The plants at Aki all look so healthy and there is such a large selection to choose ftom. Decided to revamp my garden for fall planting and had a long list of plants. I emailed Emily and within one business day, received back her quote. Her prices were competitive and the location central to where we live. I set up a time to come in and pay with my credit card and saw that she had picked out the nicest, best quality plants. Delivery came on time and the delivery man laid out the plants according to my directions. Delivery fee was $25 and they offer planting service too. My plants are thriving- I've bought plants from Home Depot, Lowes, Armstrong and Roger's Gardens but those plants never seem to do well. I liked my Aki plants so much, I went back to buy MORE plants (which are also doing really well). Aki takes really good care of their nursery plants and the quality shows. I'm already planning on going back next year for my fall planting needs! read more

The nursery is large, but be prepared to walk on rocks almost the entire time. I suggest wearing heavy boots or something. It took some time for someone to offer assistance while there. When the older man finally came he was very pleasant, but we could barely understand a word he said. Wonderful independent nursery in the heart of Irvine. They carry a good selection of plants that I haven't seen at the big box hardware stores. I only wish I had room for more plants, especially fruit trees and Japanese maples. They had some unique, colorful succulents that looked like jewels.
