Over the 20 years that I have been coming to Akron Children, the quality of care has diminished immensely. Staff turnover rate supports my assessment. The Nurses and RT and bedside hands on staff are not the issue. The actual surgeons and specialists are not the issue. The issues lie in between when after care is done. The Teams of residents that decide what care is needed or not needed are so far removed from patient care and are a majority of the problem. In my experiences which have been plentiful not just once but for 20 plus years, the narcissistic attitudes of these residents and their quest for a title and white jacket leads to this. In my opinion the hands on care staff like a bedside nurse knows more about a patient's typical baseline than these individuals. Over and over the come to the room misinformed and on a mission to prove themselves to someone. Always overlooking the obvious and or the information given to them by the nurses or parents to pursue how they believe things should be not how they are. My assessment is not a single experience but repeating experiences of the same thing. As noted by the 2.5 star rating on here and the 3 star rating on Google, I am not the only one unimpressed with the direction the Hospital has taken. Patient care used to be a priority for the hospital. It is not anymore. Persona agendas and public perception to look like a great facility has taken precedent. I could go on and on with personal examples of my opinions but that is not my intention. My intention with all my reviews is to give someone else a chance to make a decision to get second opinions or at least ask questions when something doesn't seem right. Do not go here for a specialist appointment. They will bill you separate for everything! I took my daughter there for an ENT appointment. Not only did I get charged my co-pay, but 485.00 for a simple x-ray, and another 35.00 for radiologist to read it. The x-ray was performed in house, but yet billed as if external. This should be a crime. So, with insurance, my bill exceeded 500.00! There wasn't much in the care department. The visit lasted maybe 20 min with the x-ray. I am beside myself. I can't believe they billed out 3 claims for a single MD visit. Find a specialist that does everything in house if you can. read more

My daughter was in the nicu for about 2-3 weeks. The doctors & nurse practitioners were telling us that she may not make it, that we need to this right now or she will deteriorate fast, seize and organs will shut down and she will die. This hospital abuses a child and takes a million unnecessary "precautions" to act like they are saving your child. All they did is try to make us feel hopeless, clueless and make our daughter out to be so medically fragile which was far from the truth. Mistakes were made HUGE ones... a procedure was done that should have never been done due to them forcibly acting like i was putting her at harm to not allow them to act immediately without letting me ask questions and explain why i did not agree with the procedure. The NP dismissed everything I said to her and continued saying if we don't do this now she will seize and then her organs will fail she will die. Then the next day during NICU rounds I explained why I did not agree with the procedure I was told that I was right it was not necessary.. so they then said they would discharge us that day..not one person apologized for their mistakes. My daughter is now 6 months with intestinal issues likely from their unnecessary procedure. For months I watched her suffer and constantly hate myself for allowing them to pressure me and take advantage of a distraught overwhelmed parent. I can hear her screams and suffering to this day. I cannot get the thought out of my head that they are paid and trusted with the lives of peoples children, I understand mistakes are made but I am still in pain from watching her suffer. To that NP it was just another day, never once did she even apologize and how many other children do they make these mistakes on? I caught it because I obsessed over my child's health because I documented every single thing that happened to her, because i watched her screaming in agony and never once left her side. I went days without showering, never left the room to eat meanwhile the other babies on that floor were alone no family in sight, left in the hands of these workers who do not put the time into reminding themselves that these are peoples children their whole world. They are human beings just because they cannot remember or voice what has been done to them does not make it okay for them to abuse these babies. It is not just a job where you can just order a bunch of tests and procedures and forget that that parent and child have to suffer through it let alone the potential long term risks that my child now has to endure. read more

Many of the providers are great with kids, but there has been so much miscommunication, gaslighting, and misinformation at this point that I cannot continue to advocate on behalf of my child as a patient at this point. We are going elsewhere. read more

My son had to have his tonsils taken out here and as stressful as the event is, they have a wonderful system set-up. They called us the day before to give us last minutes details on parking and where to go. That morning, we checked-in and got matching stickers for the parents to wear and our parking ticket validated. Then the front desk confirms our info and takes us to the back into our pre-check room. We are assigned a nurse that takes my sons vitals and ask tons of questions. Then a series of nurses, doctors and child-life folks come in and spok to us. While waiting, my son was pushed around in a car buggie with a few other kids. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves. The doctor walked in and 5 minutes later, my baby was whisked away to surgery. We waited outside and was given a token for free coffee or hot chocolate and a number so we could check on his progress. Everything took about less than 40 minutes. Dr. Goode came out and spoke to us and gave us after-care instructions, went down all the meds and answered all our questions. How awesome is that!!! It took another 40 minutes before we could see him. While recovery was a bit rough for him, his nurse was absolutely amazing. She was patient, tentative and tried everything she knew to try to get him to settle down. She gave him every treat possible even when he wouldn't eat it. Eventually, things settled and he ate n drank and it was time to go home. A volunteer rolled him out in a car buggie, took our picture in front of their Christmas tree and rolled him right to the car. I am very thankful for the staff there that made this stressful surgery go as well as it could!!!! read more

My 20 year old son was having severe abdominal pain that had persisted for close to 12 hours. When it was not improving we went to Akron Summa Hospital ER at around 10pm on a Sunday. It was busy as expected. We got him signed in and after waiting 30 minutes no even came out to triage him. A gentleman next to us said that he had been triaged, but was still waiting 6 hours later to be seen. I called Akron Children's Hospital ER and they said they were very busy, but we took a chance that they would see him sooner. We left Summa and arrived at Children's about 10 minutes after I called. They triaged my son immediately and let us to a room to commence assessment and therapy. The admitting nurse took a history and already had an IV catheter in place and had drawn blood by the time a physician got to the room. My son was eventually diagnosed with appendicitis and had surgery the following morning. The surgeon commented that my son was sicker than he let us know. The surgeon also asked why Summa ER sent us to Children's and I told him that we left on our own accord and were glad that we did because my son likely would have suffered longer than he should have given the lack of him even being triaged at Summa. The only delay significant delay we had at Children's was getting a radiology read on the ultrasound that was performed (over 2 hours) but the staff did let us know that they called to try to get the results faster. Every staff member we encountered was professional, kind and thorough. Kudos to them for being so busy but being able to correctly triage and get treatment going on my son even though he isn't a little kid anymore. read more

This review is for Dr. Richard Hertle and his staff. Where do I begin! This man not only provides the best patient care I've ever experienced. It her truly cares about you as in individual and never gives up on you - even the most complicated cases! He is an ophthalmologist that specializes in strabismus and nystagmus. When my doctor here in Pittsburgh no longer had answers and didn't know how to help me anymore she sent me to Dr. Hertle. I couldn't be happier with the ongoing efforts to help me and my visual disability. For any parents with children with strabismus or nystagmus - I would highly recommend taking the trip to see this doctor! You won't regret it! He puts his patients needs before everything else, has a great bedside manner and is unbelievably talented and knowledgeable! Contacted the on-call nurse for a pediatrician who is associated with Akron Children's. They recommended that I have my son seen because she could hear stridor in his breathing. He also had a fever and some retractions during his breathing. He was triage and they said he had no fever, they asked us to wait waiting room. After an hour and a half I approached the desk and asked if maybe I should wait until tomorrow to see the pediatrician because it was already 3 a.m. they suggested that I continue to wait and re-evaluated him. They also stated that the wait would not be longer than 2 hours. They said I should be back within about 30 minutes. So I continue to wait another hour. Finally I gave up and left without having my child seen. This is absolutely unacceptable for Children's Hospital. read more

I was asking them to help me with her pain, I was yelled at by a doctor, that she is not getting a narcotic, I didn't want narcotic, I wanted help. Finally saw a-doctor Riley jr. and he was going to make her wait longer for surgery, she went 8 months in a boot doing therapy. They wanted her to do more time. 8 months in a boot is along time for a kid. Then telling them they have to wait longer for surgery and no help. I feel it Was wrong. I've been sick recently and had to go to the er twice in one month. Both times I had a great experience besides being sick. My doctor and resident (Mary Dearmin MD and Mike Bragonolo) were thorough and talked to me and my mom and listened to what we had to say actively. I'v heard people say that Akron Children's Hospital is a Magical place. Well I am sorry to say that I didn't experience "the magic"... My daughter got burned by soup over at a friend's house, drove to the next town over to the urgent care at 1pm with my screaming child. They helped us enough to get her to the Akron Children's Hospital in Hudson, Ohio who then fixed her up a little more and quickly sent us on our way to Akron Children's Hospital Burn Unit in Akron Ohio where we were told she would get the best care. We pulled up to emergency, free valet parking was appreciated, carried her in and they quickly took us to the examination room. They checked us in as we were going. I wrote 3:30pm as arrival time down as they cleaned her up a little. Then we were told she had second degree burns on her legs. They then left us sit there for an hour and a half waiting for them to come back with gauze and a prescription for a hydrocodone mixture. Finally when no one reappeared I walked down the hallway to find not a soul...a woman who worked there eventually appeared and walked right past me with out acknowledging me. I went back to the room and became bi polar angry so my husband went to find help. They came back in and told us that they were short staffed and the doctor could not sign the prescription because the secretary or whoever she was couldn't figure out how to print the prescription. Then the nurses discussed how they couldn't get to the prescription because the door is locked and they didn't have a key. Keys were exchanged in front of us and with in minutes of me yelling I received quick service. Only problem is now its 5:30pm, by the time we got home and able to call all the pharmacies in my area were closed. It actually didn't even matter when it closed because come Monday morning I find out that no one in the area will even fill such a prescription. I of course called Akron Children's to see why and what I could do. They made some phone calls and could not find anyone in the area that could fill it...they were supposed to tell me to fill it before I left the hospital but failed to do that. She then changed the medicine and sent it to giant eagle here in Ravenna Ohio. At this point they made me more then mad, now I'm furious! When I was at the hospital Akron Children's told me I could make a appointment for the following Thursday but when I went to do that they said they didn't have a doctor that day and for us to wait til Monday because Wednesday was booked So I hung up with them and called our family doctor to see if we could just follow up with her. They called me back and said they talked to Akron Children's hospital and some how got me the appointment for Thursday that we were promised. Thursday comes... we have to carry said child to the burn unit from the parking garage. It was a long hall with no wheel chair offered to us. We get into the waiting room to find a old man standing next to a cleaning cart smiling at my daughter. He was definitely creepy. He stayed in there pretending to clean so he could sneak looks at my child while my husband's back was turned. On the way out he stuck his tongue out really far and wiggled it around as I opened the door for him. I after a minute told the lady at the desk that I was freaked out and that it was completely uncomfortable. God knows if she reported it so I made sure to tell the nurse when I got in the examination room. I'm frustrated telling them my daughter had to go two days with out the pain medication but the woman just told me she didn't understand and that no one has ever had a problem filling it. so idk this time we were in and out quicker then last. They had two nurses look at the burns and said they are healing well. They told us we didnt need the gauze and stuff anymore, just lotion. I explained we have cats and that she crawls around on the ground all the time and I was afraid she was going to get hair, sand, and glitter all stuck in her scabs. I requested they send us home with something so they gave us large band-aids that have sticky stuff on the inside pad. So they want me to stick sticky stuff on to my daughters sensitive new skin, that is just ridiculous!!!! I could have gotten better care at my family doctors office ten minutes down the road...instead I had to drive a half hour away twice because "they are the best". Its a buncha B.S.... read more

I've had multiple visits to Akron Children's hospital and unfortunately found the same result time after time. They gouge you for everything they can. The doctors are nice but charge an exorbitant amount for everything. My son had a dislocated toe. It cost well over $1000 when everything was said and done. One charge was for "surgery" when the doctor popped the toe back into place which was separate from the "casting" fee (should have just pulled the toe back in place myself). They gave him a cast for a couple weeks and when they took it off, they advised that he should wear a boot for an additional couple weeks. That boot cost $600 which was not covered by insurance and it was $60 at the local pharmacy. My other son hurt his wrist and his mom took him in to get looked at. They wanted to give him a brace. I told her NOT to leave with that brace and ask them how much it was going to cost. They said $250 for the brace so I had her take a picture. The brace had a Drug Mart sticker on it so I just drove over to Drug Mart where I bought the identical one for $25! I understand that a lot of hospitals struggle financially due to battles with insurance but this place is definitely not one of them. If there was another hospital system that specialized in children, I would recommend going there but it seems like Akron Children's is swallowing all of the pediatricians around the area (we used to go to an independent one that was purchased by them). If you do go, PLEASE make sure you understand the costs prior to exiting their facility with any of their accessories (Boots, crutches, braces, etc). read more

I recently went to this ER with a 2 year old with vomiting , diarrhea, temp of 103+ and dehydration and lethargy, we waited in the waiting room for over 3 hours while we waited to be taken back to a room ! We spoke to the receptionist several times about how much longer it would be before we were seen by the Dr and she replied on all occasions that she could not tell by looking at the computer, because she was new!!!! We had to go out to my car and get fluids to keep her hydrated while we continued to wait, Then finally we went back to the room and had to wait another 2 hours before any iv fluids, Tylenol for her fever or zofran for nausea was administered!!!!!!! I understand being busy but I feel the wait time was totally unacceptable. Had we not had any medical background I'm afraid of what might have happened to an innocent child!!!!! Poor service, poor quality care, doctors are incompetent and arrogant (what an interesting combination). ER rooms are disappointing. Hospital does not respond to questions or concerns about your child's care. I moved here from the suburbs of Chicago and the quality of care at Akron Children's Hospital would not be acceptable there. I am embarrassed that I had my son treated by Akron Children's Hospital. Now I am in the process of having a simple broken radius corrected after their care. If that isn't enough, my one child who was diagnosed at Akron Children's Hospital's with nightmares was diagnosed with Epilepsy at the Cleveland Clinic during the same time frame. read more

My son was directed by Dr. White associated with hospital to have a speech evaluation in the hospital. We were charged $750 for 1 hour and 15 minutes service. The bill had no breakdown, simple stated hospital charges. After multiple negotiations, we ended up have to pay the bill. In this economy, they are taking advantage of parents caring for their child. I would not go back to this place. A hospital focus on making money will not treat their patients with best interest. read more

Staff was very polite, but they're very slow and you are left waiting in the waiting room for an unreasonably long time.
