The staff was okay. Most were at least baseline polite. Not sure I would say everyone was competent, especially the young man who tried to insert the IV line TWICE and had to have someone else come in and do it. The entire ER experience leaves a LOT to be desired. Despite not being particularly busy, we were never made comfortable. We basically moved from waiting room to waiting room with a couple testing rooms in between. Never a bed. Never a modicum of privacy. Just a bunch of sick people of various degrees sharing a big room, and each others' embarrassing moments. I did not appreciate being privy to someone else's vomit fits from ten feet away--and it happened more than once. My wife, struggling to deal with a painful kidney stone, was never once given the opportunity to lay down or be comfortable. They stuck her in a wheelchair for over five hours, listening to people throwing up and seeing their open wounds ooze, before we were finally discharged. She was not able to rest for even one moment between the pain, pus, and puking. On the way out, it took nearly an hour to discharge. They put us in a cubicle with one chair--there were two of us. I stood up for 45 minutes and not one person offered me a seat. I will change insurances before I ever have to come back here. Shame on Summa. For a "teaching hospital," the only lesson we learned is to avoid at all costs. read more

Mom is a Senior with end stage heart failure, end stage COPD, and pneumonia. Transported from health facility to Summa ER. ER saw her and requested her be admitted. Summa does not take her insurance plan, so now being transported to Akron General delaying care hours more. Disgusting. Insurance and hospitals need overhauled by the government. Mother was a nurse for 40 years, and this is how all the seniors are being treated. Disgusting. Do no harm is the medical oath, but it's all about money. Smh read more

I had to have a surgery that required staying in the hospital for a couple nights after. I received great care from the nurses and doctors. Although I didn't have a huge appetite, I found the food to be good, especially the soups and the bacon they served for breakfast. My room was large and comfortable and I heard very little noise from the hallway. There are huge windows and it felt very welcoming for a hospital room. My room was kept clean and tidy and I had plenty of amenities (wash cloths, toothpaste/toothbrush, lotion, etc.). The pre-op nurse Pam was so nice and made me feel at-ease, even though I was anxious. Nurses on my floor: Chrystle, Melody, and Bryan were all awesome as well as the nursing supervisor Becky who came to check on me several times. Nursing assistant, Liv was beyond sweet and helpful. My surgeon and the residents were all knowledgeable, straightforward, and kind. I felt like this was high quality care and I was kept well-informed of everything. It was convenient having my pharmacy order delivered to my room before being discharged. Great experience at a modern facility. read more

I have had my husband go to this hospital not once but twice. He was in severe critical condition. They brought him back from a near death experience. It is a great hospital. They go above and beyond. The staff is great! He has had a very long stay in the ICU. They have been very informative and knowledgeable of every aspect of what is needed to do. All staff on the T3 Unit has done a remarkable job! Nurses and Doctors have been very involved with my husband and myself for what is needed done and also asks questions about my husband to help in any way that they can. They have gone above a beyond for my husband! They are the best place for a Trauma 1 facility! He is currently still in the facility, and on the mend. I would definitely recommend going here for any critical care! read more

I thought this place would have smart doctors who would think about what my problem could be and creatively come up with ways we could actually diagnose, then treat it. I thought they'd simply do an echo, then suggest an anti-arrhythmic or beta blocker to try till symptoms go away. No. This place is staffed by gossiping teenagers and crabby PAs who are just following protocols set in place by someone else, and who don't like it at all when you hesitate to have procedures done or ask why. Just had blood work done recently ? Don't want an IV port and saline flush? Don't think you need an X-ray? Too bad. They are quick to threaten you with saying you refused treatment, instead of being calm and reasonable, or responding to you like you're a human being, or thinking for a moment about your question. No specialist ever came. When I finally got into a back room with a bed, it reeked of wet dog, was just as filthy as the rest of the ER, (floors, tabletops not wiped down) and it was so so loud of beeping and laughing nurses - if you have no choice but to go to an ER, take earbuds or headphones and music, and an eye mask. The light is so bright and depressing. I really wish I hadn't wasted time and money coming here. I left feeling worse than when I came in. ERs seem to have become near useless unless you've broken a bone or need stitches. It was a nightmare. read more

If I could rate a zero star, I would. We came in at 10:30 am, my wife panicking that she may be having a miscarriage, now at 1:19 pm, she has finally, been taken in to be seen. Meanwhile, the Narcan clinic is alive and well. Throughout these last 3 hours, I've seen at 6 crackheads come in and out and get treated. When we're taken to the side of the building to finally be treated, after 3 hours, it was like a ghost town. What had to be at least 3,000 sqft of hospital facilities that weren't being used. Waste of resources, waste of time, and GOD FORBID if you don't have good insurance and actually have to pay money for this low quality service (thankfully we do). Unless you're a dope fiend looking for a quick fix, 0/10 recommend this place to ANY decent human being. read more

My daughter was born here. All the nurses and doctors were kind and respectful. I had a no complaints during our 2 day stay, even the food was good. Months later we were it with a bill for $50,000 before insurance. I can vaguely understand this, she did get an epidural but the birth went smoothly. Then 6 months later they hit us with another $10,000 dollar bill before insurance for my daughter. She literally was just born, the only treatment she received was they rubbed some antibiotics on her eyes, she didn't even use there formula as we breastfed. I know it's not just summa this is more of a systematic issue but it truly is sick. Having a baby should not cost $60,000. read more

Beware of the night nurses at this establishment. They act like there are no rules and make up stories about their patients as soon as visiting hours are over and we have to spend all day debunking what they said. Then once they find out we called them out they try to play god and get revenge by treating the patient like an animal, continuing to spew lies about them when their families can't visit them and they are alone and scared. Horrible hospital that would allow staff to act like this. They should be ashamed. No complaints about day staff. They have been great, maybe a little slow because they are understaffed, but the night nurses scare the hell out of me. I was in the Er today with a sprained ankle from two days prior then I ended up turning my foot the wrong way and twisted it again I saw Dr. Lahn and Dr.McDowell they treated me so well they were so nice treated me like a human being they did new X Rays nothing is broken I do have a follow up appointment Wednesday w/ my Orthopedic Dr that I scheduled Friday but the Tylenol/ Ibuprofen wasn't working so they made sure I wasn't suffering I felt very comfortable w/ them soon as I met them I could tell they took me seriously so if you ever go to ER and get either one of these Drs your in excellent hands Thank you so much to the Drs and nurses who were so sweet for taking care of me read more

He stayed all the way for transportation to come even when one driver refused transport and there was a wait period for another. I had major surgery under the care of a wonderful staff. My doctor was Robin Laskey. The procedure flawless. My stay at this facility was 5 plus stars. My room clean and pleasant. I just can't say enough about this staff. All the nurses are wonderful but I have to mention Troy. This nurse has a wonderful even beautiful attitude and solid work ethic. Troy is that health care provider that makes the difference. Summa should be proud. Thank you again for coming through with exceptional physicians and a miracle staff. read more

I was taken to Akron City from Barberton, directly to the catheter lab on Saturday night after a heart attack. The procedure was fast and efficient and used a newer procedure that was much easier on the patient. Dr Rea was very polite and professional. Even though it was after midnight when finished, they even lingered to swap war stories with me. My nurses afterwards were exceptional--Jordan and Cinda. All of the others, from the specialists to the food servers were also very friendly and professional. Although the food was ok, they could give you bigger portions though. My room was modern and clean. So, thanks for saving my life and being polite and professional at the same time. I base my rating after a similar stay at the vaunted George Washington University Hospital in DC over ten years ago. They sucked. Very badly. It's good to be back home. March 2023 - Er 10+ hours (lobby+bed) + 1+ hour (wait discharge) = 11+ hours = 2x (5min each tests) + 2x (1-2mins each Dr consults) + 3x (1-2mins nurses in room) Staff; Nurses; Drs. all polite but see times above. This IS Akron OH not LA NY not murder capitol like Chicago Atlanta...no natural disaster; no train wreak; no 20 car pile ups; no apt fire burn victums; no covid epi. etc etc etc...There is another major Hospital few blocks away + childrens + Western Reserve + Barberton + a gazillion clinics urgent care etc etc all over Summit Co....really need some geek to post the millions dollars salaries pharma kickbacks huge bonuses the hospital millionaires give themselves every year then spin their justify for all the cut backs to staff and services. But I do thank GOD I have good ins as I did get a 1/3 of 6" sub sandwich little bag pretzels and a snort of oj which my ins will probably be billed extra couple hundred for. If you old or have children with you make sure to bring headphones for them as the idiots ranting f-bombs for long wait times in er waiting room; will its nice to feel safer with the 2-3 Police officers sitting in front door area to check for weapons instead maybe ask/have one in waiting room once in a while to quell that stupidity read more

The ER doctor was rude and would not stop talking over me. She decided that something was wrong with my heart and was upset that the test did not confirm her assumptions. She turned around and walked off while I was still attempting to talk to her about my concerns. She said she was going to get something for me as she walked away, and I never saw her again. I read all of my test results on my chart while I was still there, and none of those results were ever explained to me, even when I asked the nurse. I was billed over $5,000 for being ignored most of the night, and when I called to talk to someone about billing my insurance, no return call was ever received. I sent messages in my chart that my insurance needed to be billed, which has also been ignored. I called yet again and was next in line when suddenly the line went dead. I would never recommend this hospital to anybody; they do not care about their patients and give horrible care. Summa, please respond to your patients when they attempt to contact you. read more

Went to Physical Therapy and mentioned I was having chest pain. Got code blued and they determined it wasn't super life threatening but they suggested I got checked out. Sat in the lobby on the terrible chairs with chronic pain for 7 hours just to have an IV put in which caused a panic attack. Haddn't of gotten my meds in or ate and asked for those meds as I was starting to feel unstable mentally. I never got those meds and it took calling family out of town to come bring me something to eat as I am disabled and definately don't have the money to have something delivered. By the time I had them remove said IV the lobby was full of people who were not there that morning. So basicly they ignored a paitent with known cardiac symptoms and was incredibly rude. I have been discharged for a panic attack before at 1am with no way home, and I was definately unable to walk home physcially, and it wouldn't have been safe. Would sue for malpractice that that takes 6 figures income to do. read more

I have been diagnosed with cancer. I have been coming here for help after I had my surgery I could no longer get anybody to listen to me or give me the right pain meds or anything around this place. It's all about the money here !!!!!!!!!!!!They are short of staff and the doctor has not been listening to me. I have been telling him that I am in pain. They sent me home with generic medicine and I had my whole stomach removed. I've been calling trying to get pain meds. It's been a mess dealing with this place I am getting ready to switch over to Cleveland clinic hospital, I recommend you run if you need help do not go to none of Summa medical Center emergency clinics nothing yeah mess ! I rang my call light and the nurse and the aid was sleeping. I opened up my door to see why no one is answering the car lights, and now I know because they were out there in the hallway sleeping. The nurse was hiding in the room. The staff at summa medical center. they don't care and their emergency department is the worst center in the world run they didn't even give me the proper medication just sent me home with 1 generic oxycodone 5 mg and that was it after I had been taken for medication's at the hospital, so I don't know what made him think that I wouldn't need the same meds at home like I just had had the a whole stomach removal surgery when I was in the hospital I was taking all types of medicines once I got released they didn't wanna give me the medicines that I was taking because I have United healthcare insurance Their attitudes are so horrible. The only reason I'm rating it 4/5 is because one night the graveyard shift had one nurse with some attitude. I know for certain my father would not have gotten the proper care in California. At my recent appointment, I felt more like a number than a patient. The doctor I had (we'll just call her MK) was very rude and couldn't answer most of my questions; questions she should be familiar with. She didn't even know that RLS means Restless Leg Syndrome and that some women get it during pregnancy. I had to educate her on the matter. The other responses to my questions were "I don't know" or "You're wrong, that's not pregnancy". When MK wasn't cutting me short, she was being rude and dismissing my concerns to the questions that she could answer. She couldn't even be thorough with the information she did give me. She just handed me my papers and was on her way. Neglected to even prescribed me the medicine I needed. She was so ready to leave out of the room, I just let her go. It wasn't worth the oxygen I'd need to express my disgust with her. I'm 30 weeks pregnant - due date 12/13/14, I shouldn't have to go through this so late in my pregnancy. I don't know if I should or can file a complaint against that nurse, I think I should just start going to a different doctor since I have that option. Maybe I should just go to Akron Children's Hospital and see how they fair; hell, I'm fine with going back up to Rainbow Babies & Children's hospital in Cleveland and have my daughter there. I loved that hospital. Anything is better than the amount of respect and care I received at my last appointment. The more I think about it, the worst I feel about how I was treated. I will be calling Akron City first thing in the morning to let them know that I'm transferring my care to another hospital. read more

If I could give 0 stars to Akron City Hospital I would. On July 16th I was picking my mom up from room 514 and as I was gathering her belongings I opened the closet door in the room and the door fell off and hit me in my head. I made a police report with a hospital officer, spoke with maintenance and was taken to the E.R by the head Nursing Supervisor. Since I have had several headaches, my knee had a bruise on it and nobody from the hospital has the decency to even return my call after 4 attempts. This is horrible!!! I do not understand how this room was being cleaned daily and no one ever opened the door to see that it had been broken which the maintenance manager agreed. If I was a frail older person this closet could have killed me. Now I see how people come into your hospital and never make it out. No response, no call or anything. Just the E.R telling me I may have a concussion and CT scans cause cancer which scared me into not getting it. This hospital is terrible and just think I've always spoke highly of this hospital in the past. read more

This is the most disorganized place I have ever been to.I was electrocuted and was in severe pain especially in my feet.They would not stop grabbing my feet even though I screamed in pain.I had severe diarrea and they let me lay in my poop and blood.I was in this hell hole for five weeks with the most useless staff,especially at night.I could not walk and needed to go to the bathroom all the time or just poop in the bed and get a soar butt.The doctors were good,but everyone else was horrible.The billing department was my next nightmare.They keep double billing me and when I call them about it,they have no answers but tell me to ignore the second bill.I have had a billing review in process that has been going on for nearly three months and they keep sending me bills.Some of the bills have already been paid.A month ago they told me they were almost done reviewing the bill and were going to set me up with a pay plan since the co pays are in the thousands.I called a couple days ago and they said it was still under review.Three months and the bills are still piling up since I am still not completely recovered and probably never will be 100%.All the summa doctors and nurses are billed from the same billing office and those x-rays and heart tests and abdominal tests and lung tests are adding up every month. read more

A relative of mine was transferred from her home to the Akron City hospital ICU. The nurses were fantastic, and the questions from my wife and father-in-law to the doctors and nurses were always answered. She was in the facility for about 10 days, the care she received was excellent. I was present to see the care for 2 of the days, and the nurses were outstanding trying to make things easier for the family members as well in this time. Even when the patient was being difficult when the nurses were attending to her, the nurses were very professional and positive. read more

The nursing staff is good. But the continuity of care and communication between docs and specialty departments is so poor that I got a different diagnosis from ENT, Neurosurgery, and Infectious Disease in one morning. Summa is not a good hospital. The discharge process was so long and drawn out, it took HOURS, even after discharge papers were in my hand and I was released. They also want to keep you as long as possible. Don't ever go to their ER on a weekend, you wont get out til Monday night, even for something that must be scheduled and handled outpatient the coming week. Very frustrating. read more

I had emergency brain surgery at Summa on May 21 and had nothing but positive experiences. The nursing staff was amazing, and did everything they could to keep me comfortable and well informed. The many doctors that I saw throughout my visit made sure that I had all of the information I needed to make informed decisions, and made sure that I had the best care available. Even the people who took my food orders, brought my food, and transported me around the hospital went above and beyond. I hope to never have to be in the hospital again, but if I do, I would choose Summa every time. read more

My 87 yr old wife was left in a cold hallway for 1 1/2 hours after a CT scan. She was so cold she peed in the bed. What kind of amoral hospital does this to an old woman? The doctor was too busy to order the discharge and we waited an hour. Since the hospital is a ridiculous maze of construction we waited 1/2 hour for "transport service" which is a misnomer because the service is so substandard. We would have had to wait even longer if we had not complained earlier about the 1 1/2 hour delay. Yes, the 1/2 hour wait was their idea of great service. I would recommend going to any other hospital than this one. I would give zero stars if possible. read more
