Amazing Mediterranean food, some the best we've found in Indy. Full of flavor and fresh, and the green beans are to die for. We have been ordering delivery during the pandemic and it takes awhile for it to reach us because of the distance, but it's always worth it. I'd go higher, but from a restaurant stand point, it just don't add up The wife and I had been meaning to get out here for quite some time. This unassuming restaurant/grocery store is in a little hidden plaza behind CarX on Allisonville. If you blink, you just might miss it. AMBIENCE- so this place has two entrances; one for the grocery store, and one for the restaurant. As we walked into the restaurant, we saw about 8-10 tables, and a counter. Not a whole lot of decoration, they had a rug hanging on the wall, and the divider was basically one of the aisles of the grocery store. Overall, not that impressive. But hey, as long as they have good food, I could care less. SERVICE- we sat down, and a guy working there (as well as the grocery store) presented us with some menus. The guy was friendly enough, but was not very responsive, and was often missing for long periods of time (usually because he was helping customers on the other side). We were in no huge rush, but c'mon people. There were two guys there. One should focus on the restaurant, and the other on the grocery store. MENU- menu looked pretty simple. They had typical appetizers such as hummus, baba ghanouj (sp.), grape leaves, sandwiches (shwarma, gyros, falafel), and a few entrees (gyro plate, shish kabob dinner, etc...). The wife and I weren't starving, so we elected to just get sandwiches. I rocked a gyro and my wife got a chicken shwarma sandwich. FOOD- my wife's shwarma sandwich was ok. The meat seemed a little dry, but it wasn't too bad. My gyro KICKED A$$. Perhaps I had been waiting a bit too long for my food, and I was that hungry, but they jam packed my gyro with meat, and the tomato and onion worked well with the tahini sauce. My wife took a bite and wished she had gotten the same thing. GROCERY STORE- might as well kill two birds with one stone. The grocery selection did not seem that vast, but seemed to have your basic middle eastern food needs taken care of. OVERALL- the food was good, but the wait was long. I think this place would be better served if they weren't a "full service" restaurant. Just let me order my food, and I'll bus my own tray when I'm done. The gyro was REALLY good though. Hands down the best gyros in the area. They have a typical mediterranean menu. I really like the tabbouli salad. It is the most authentic tabbouli I have had in Indy. The prices aren't bad either. I think a gyro is around $5 What I like best is they also have a little grocery with a ton of hard to find Lebanese ingredients. They make fresh pita and sell them at the store. I think it is on Thursdays that they have whole wheat pitas too. I definitely recommend this place. read more

Really good chicken Shwarma. Different from classic Shwarma in that the slices are a bit thicker and have a more moist and baked in flavor as opposed to using the sauces (garlic / spicy) for flavor. Service is a bit slow but worth the wait. Seems like this is kinda unknown - never too busy and also has a grocery store attached with some hard to find ingredients. Two dining areas - main one is very cafeteria feeling - nothing special. They also have a side room (farther from the grocery store) with some more traditional seating that would be good for a larger group or something a bit more classy. Ultimately - this review is based on the food and not really the dining experience. I'm still debating how this compares to Boston / NYC Shwarma. read more

I read a review about this place in Fishers magazine and was intrigued. I finally made it in for a falafel last week and I cannot wait to return. (My stomach grumbles as I write this) Marwan, the owner, makes amazing falafel! The house-made pita is stuffed with absolutely huge falafel patties that are crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. I've had way too many overcooked, dried out falafel....not the case here! The sandwich also included sliced tomato, onions, tahini (delish!) and some slices of pickles that defy description...just go there, you'll see what I mean. I also roamed the groceries at Al-Basha - oh yeah, it's a combo cafe and middle eastern specialty store. I bought some loukoum (Turkish delight) that was rose-flavored (my favorite) and was very fresh and mmmm.....good! Other purchases included a bag of fresh, made in the store, pita bread and a tub of pistachio halva. Marwan even gave me a brief tour of nearly all things Turkish on the shelves and in the freezers after I mentioned being born in Turkey. Al-Basha also serves gyros, hummus, baba ghannouj and other middle eastern morsels. Word is that a new, expanded menu is about to be launched....seriously, this place is one of the best-kept secrets in Fishers. Went to the buffet, on a Sunday. Didn't order from the menu. There was one highly overworked waitress. I felt sorry for her, as the place was really crowded. The food was good. No problems here at all. The buffet has meat and fish and vegetarian selections, and it's good quality. The selections aren't amazingly varied, one of each meat type, plus gyro-fixings. Not over the top, but very good. Coffee was good. Adjoining is a well-stocked Middle Eastern grocer. Wide selection of specialty items, fresh looking where that counts, lots of nuts and seeds, olives, and items you might find in Anatolia, or father East. Not thing to apologize about, although it was a bit pricey. Somehow, the manager just left when it got busy. Might have been an emergency, might have been sloth. Still, not going to make a special trip to go here again. Two annoyances: music was too loud, and the electronic doorbell rang almost continuously. Between the two, cacophony. Perhaps the rough edges might be cured somehow. I'm unlikely to return and find out. read more

I love the lunch buffet here. They have several different dishes from which to choose and they are all bursting with flavor. Before I forget, I want to point out that the hummus is outstanding. There is also a nice salad, with cucumbers, tomatoes, olives and feta cheese. My friend loves the baba ghanouj, but eggplant is not for me. Of course they have gyros on the buffet, but there are many unique dishes to try, too. They mix it up a bit, too, so you get different choices on different visits. My only wish is that they would add falafel to the buffet. read more

I unfortunately had a bad experience here. I recently sought them out specifically as I found them through Google for product that I needed. I called in advance to insure they had the item I needed and was told they do. Once I got there I was met with confusion and was told that they don't carry this item. I was also treated dismissively which was quite a shock as there were a lot of great reviews online. I didn't want to give up as I drove quite a ways to find this product. So, I talked to multiple members of the staff and finally was able to get the item I needed. I will only return to this store if it's my last option. read more

There are many reason why I love going to Al Basha, the most important of which being - this grocery and restaurant reminds me of my home. I've never sat down and eaten at the restaurant, but I frequently come to get gyro take out (sold by the pound for about $12). It's amazingly convenient and combined with their bread sold in the grocery side, it's the perfect dinner. Aside from dinner foods, who doesn't love candy and snacks? I love the Ulker chocolates they sell and a variety of desserts made in restaurant. If you're looking for a unique dinner that won't break the budget, try this place out! read more

Got take out for the first time here and it was amazing! All of the food was excellent and the service I got was fast and friendly. While waiting for the food I went through their grocery and picked up a bunch of new (to me) things to try. For imported items, I found the prices to be very reasonable. Tonight ordered gyros, stuffed grapeleaves, hummus, schwarma and falafel. the falafel was ok... EVERYTHING ELSE was disgusting, truly disgusting... gyro meat was some sort of non-lamb or beef processed whiteish meat covered with a mayonnaise sauce trying to be tzatziki. This has been on the "to try" list for a while, but I generally avoid Fishers like the plague. I wound up on Allisonville yesterday and gave Al Basha a go. Walking up, things looked a little sketchy. I don't know if it was the window paint, or what. Once I got in, it was really cozy though. Not over the top, but decorated well, and the tables were spaced out well. The guy working was super friendly. I went with the default gyro and fries just to test the water. The fries were actually good! I've had this running annoyance that fries are usually the only, or one of the few sides you can get at fast food restaurants, yet most of the time they are completely unremarkable, or at worst, barely edible. Al-Bashas fries were good. Slightly crispy outside, softer in the middle. They had a very light season salt on them. The gyro itself was probably a 7/10 as far as gyros go. Al-Basha serves them in the "inside the pita" style, rather than the "on the pita" style that I favor, but they wrap it up nicely in foil. There was a lot of meat and the tzatziki was thick. Overall, I had a good meal. Next time I think I'm going to try their Kababs. read more

It's a half restaurant, half grocery store that is family run. Best time to come here specially if you're new to this cuisine is during lunch. They have a really good lunch buffet deal for $10.99/pp. The options are pretty decent for the price point. Their delish hummus is included including pita bread, soup, and a variety of meat and veggie options. Their coconut cake that was included in the buffet was amazing. I ended up getting two slices and I seriously can finish the entire pan that's on the buffet table. read more

We spent months searching for a good Mediterranean/Greek carry out spot and finally found it here! Favorites are the hummus and chicken schwarma wrap (my husband even orders that over the gyro meat, which is rare!) - although everything has been good. Good food. They have a lunch buffet occasionally, so I would recommend going then if you want to try some things. Be careful where you park. At least one business has a sign up saying if you park there and do not go into their business, they will have you towed. I did not see any tow trucks while I was there, but I took heed of the signs claiming "squatters rights" Nice little grocery store connected to the restaurant. Since moving from Atlanta, we've been looking for good ethnic food spots. One of the things we've missed was middle eastern food. We loved the fresh bread and shawarma at Jerusalem Deli in Alpharetta, GA but haven't found our Indy replacement until now. We check out Al Basha for dinner this Friday and had hummus and a extra spicy chicken shawarma wrap. It was delightful but a little too hot even for my taste. Since we didn't have my daughter with us, and she loves Jerusalem Deli, she insisted that we get it again Saturday, which we did. Changed up to have some falafel, beef shawarma (just spicy this time, not extra spicy) and gyro pita along with some hummas and a chicken shawarma wrap. The wraps are awesome. The hummus is great. The falafel is tasty. It's a great little spot near Allisonville Nursery. We'll be back often. Check it out! read more

I was close by and remembered that I went to the same place when they were in Broad Ripple. It was between lunch and dinner, and they were cleaning up but stopped for me so I could sit down. Super nice staff! Ordered a Gyro Salad and a side of fries. Oh my, everything was delicious. Fries were some of the best I've had. My salad was excellent as well. I highly recommend this little hole in the wall, half grocery half restaurant. I'll be going to appts close to there for a few months so I'll definitely be returning, and I'll try to hit the lunch buffet! read more

Had a great time here on Sunday. First of all the food and staff are delightful. And although located in a strip mall, the restaurant space has plenty of atmosphere. I was generally pleased with my baba ganouj and fattoush salad, though I would have liked to have seen something different than iceberg lettuce used as the base. However, the lamb kebabs were out of this world. The subtly layered flavors which likely included both a marinade and spice rub left me wanting more. After the meal I enjoyed roaming the aisles of the grocery store, perusing a wide variety of imported foods and fresh halal cuts of of meat. read more

Al-Basha. Hidden (literally) gem of Fishers, IN. I'm south of it, so I always turn on Easy Street and Allisonville Rd, hooking around the left when I go behind the first row of strip malls, to journey into the back. It's adjacent to India Sizzling (good food!) as well. I don't even know how I found the place originally. I had gone to Bombay Bazaar for some masalas and what not and mentioned glancing at the 'AL-BASHA' sign between two buildings on the way up. The proprietor went, "Pfah! GYROS!" and I put it from my mind; filing it for later use. I am a huge fan of the cuisine of North Africa, the Levant, the Near East, and the Middle East. I had heard that the place was a grocery store, so I went with that in mind, hoping to score some pita. Ladies and gentlemen, they make their pita bread fresh every day and it really shows. When I first went to the place, it was just two rooms. One side restaurant; one side grocery. Now, it seems they've added a hookah bar and a new room. Item the First: Grocery If you're looking for specific Middle Eastern cheeses, exotic spams, THE BEST PICKLES EVER, kegs of olive oil, date cookies (mamouls), tahini, teas, coffee, spices, etc. Their prices on spices are great, a large container of cumin for around 5 bucks. You can't beat that. If you ever need spices, I've always recommended to my friends to go to ethnic groceries, because people actually USE the spices often. The price will reflect that, and not the thimble full of coriander powder for 16.00 at the local Korger. Item the Second: Restaurant Not only is everything really cheap and reasonable, but the the presentation is great. I love getting hummus there, because I'll see the delicious moat of olive oil surrounding the center ramparts of some whole garbanzo beans. The lamb/beef domathes (stuffed grape leaves) are orgasmic, and the sandwiches are not only gigantic, but full of flavor. I've ordered pretty much everything on the menu, and I've never been disappointed. VIGNETTE: I took some friends there, and I ordered a beef shwarma. I asked for some hot sauce on the side. Our waiter said, "The chef can make it spicy for you. How spicy do you want it?" I said, "As spicy as you can make it, without destroying the flavor." Waiter said, "We can do that." and vanished into the back. Minutes later, I heard this come from the kitchen. "MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" It was the best thing ever. I totally wasn't expecting it, but it was hilarious. I thought that this shwarma was going to come out exactly as I wanted it. The waiter came out and warned me that it was really hot, and then waited to see me take the first bite. The flavor of the shwarma was preserved, and my mouth was lit on fire. My eyes were tearing, and I was sweating... and smiling throughout the whole thing. Truly, an unparalleled experience! Delicious! BACK TO REVIEW I also wanted to point out that there seems to be an ever revolving stable of college kids who are hired to wait at the restaurant. I've never had a bad experience with them, but I see that others have had some different experiences. Item the Third: Hookah Bar/Buffet/Party Room/Restaurant This area is still new to me. I know you can rent it out for catered functions, but you can also go in there to smoke some shisha. I can't remember if they ever have a buffet here or not, so please don't quote me on that. I got a hookah here once, and it burned well and tasted great. I believe the flavor we got was some sort of tropical thing! Hopefully, this helps. I would live here, if I could. It's not often that you encounter a place that is easy on the wallet, flavorful and filling. The grocery store is a must for anyone interested in Mid Eastern cooking. I would eat here a whole lot more often if it wasn't so stinkin' far from where we live downtown. Still, it's hard to find good Middle Eastern food in the Indianapolis area, and this is the best of what we've discovered so far. Yeah, my grandma's stuff is better (of course!) but this hidden gem serves up solid hummus, tasty stuffed grape leaves, and some mighty fine falafel. The prices are reasonable and the attached grocery store allows me to pick up some fresh made pita along with any spices and supplies I need to fashion a Lebanese feast of my own. We both worked on Valentine's Day, and we were both too tired to go out that night. We decided to go out the day after, for dinner. Al Basha sounded good, plus, I found a coupon. Sadly, Yelp only offers 5 stars, because this place should get 7 out of 5 stars. We split an appetizer, the fried kibbeh. Oh, my. The smell of cinnamon along with savory beef was amazing. The sauce was perfect to dress the kibbeh, lettuce and tomato. I ordered a half gyro and salad, and my husband ordered the gyro dinner. The salad was delicious, and he always gives me his olives. The gyro was perfect, and I watched my husband close his eyes with pure joy several times, between appreciative comments. His yellow and white seasoned rice smelled so good I made him share a bite of each. We loved the whole experience, from food and service to the music. We debated for a few minutes whether to have dessert. We made the right decision-baklava. It's not as good as my mother-in-law's, but it is really good! This is our go-to for quick, delicious carry out. While we are waiting for our food, we usually mill around in the attached market. The food here is deliciously authentic. The gyro is my favorite. It's so big I can usually eat it for two meals--I love cold lamb--don't knock it 'til you try it. The sandwich can be heavy on the onion, so I usually ask them to go light on it.
