When you happen to be in Michigan, Al-Bo's is a great break from being in Michigan. It's like a quick side trip to Northern Central Europe. From the Austrian wienerschnitzel to the Bosnian ćevapi, you know you're not near the Great Lakes. The ćevapi was excellent, bringing back good memories of being in Mostar, and while I expected some coffee like what we call Turkish, or Greek, or Macedonian the proffered espresso-based drinks were pretty fabulous. The service is friendly, knowledgeable, and served with a side of good humor. Execution and delivery of food is pretty darn quick. The restaurant itself is clean, tidy, and perhaps a little more bare bones than I expected. That doesn't take anything away from the joy of just chilling somewhere in Europe between my chores in Michigan. read more

The food here is absolutely delicious. You will not regret anything on this menu. You can seat yourself when you come in, so no need to wait in line. The vibe is more of a sports bar but less TV's. I went there with a friend for the first time. I had driven past it many times and wanted to try it. We ordered the spinach and feta burek and geschnitzel. Both were really really good! The burek was my favorite! I would definitely go back and get that with a salad. The geschnitzel was also very good, the noodles were chewy and had a good flavor. The chicken was cooked well. I can't count the number of times I've driven past Al-Bo's and never stopped in. Looking to do something different, a friend and I went here for dinner after a round of golf. The menu was huge and it was a challenge getting through it all. Instead, I decided to just focus on two or three dishes that looked or sounded good and go from there. I had the goulash and my friend ordered the special which was lamb shank. Both were excellent. I especially liked the goulash sauce and the extremely favorable beef chunks. Fresh baked bread was served with both dishes which was great for lopping up the great goulash sauce! We also has a couple of lagers which were very good. I happened to be in the area for work and thought I'd give this place a try and I'm so glad I did! Such a nice little resturaunt, with authentic European cuisine. It is a Serbian restaurant, but has many European dishes. The food brought back so many memories and I couldn't decide on just one thing, so had to order to go as well. Home made Spätzle!! When they make it by hand you know the place is legit- even though its easy to make, many places use a boxed/bagged version. A resturaunt that takes the time to make it by hand is a Gem. Flew in to Grand Rapids for the first time and wanted a quick lunch straight from the airport, we found this place by chance and were very happy we did. Service was like being a guest in someone's home....warm, inviting and very personal. Batsi was a wonderful guide for a newbie to Al-Bo's! The Sarma( sour cabbage rolls) were served piping hot with fluffy and light mashed potatoes and a flavorful sauce. We got a shopska salad to start and fresh bread as well. Also pictured is the grilled chicken sandwich for the guest still recovering from the flight . For dessert we got tufahije and baklava .... Light, flaky and chewy, just like it should be. After lunch we went to the little store next door to buy some goodies but we decided to come back to try the burek and pljeskavika and get our goodies then. This restaurant is a hidden gem, and the menu is quite extensive. I ordered the Lamb Shank with Mashed Potatoes. The lamb was cooked perfectly, and the meat was so tender, that it fell over the bone. The mashed potatoes came lukewarm, but when it mixed it up with the lamb, it got warmer right away. The Owners were the servers, as I went about 2:30 PM on a Saturday. I've had Al-Bos on my list to try for ages, so when one of our go-to spots was too busy at dinner time, Nate and I decided to check it out. I'm trying to slowly go through my list of places I've never been in Grand Rapids! I will say I think my expectations were a bit high from some of the reviews I've read. We sat in a cozy booth and were greeted by a friendly employee who was working the bar and waiting all the tables. It wasn't super busy but I had a feeling the service might be a bit slower. They do serve alcohol here but we stuck with water. The menu has several photos and I knew I wanted to try the burek, which is a flaky pastry filled with cheese or cheese and meat. I did have to Google some names as there aren't many descriptions, and we asked our server for some recommendations. He suggested the burek with cheese and spinach, which wasn't listed on the menu. I asked which he liked better, the cevapi or the pljeskavica. I think he said they are basically the same meat mixture, one is in a sausage link form and the other is a burger-like patty. We went with the pljeskavica. Once we got our food, we dug in and I noticed that everything was just lukewarm, not hot. I was a bit disappointed with that because I think the burek would have been better if it was warmer. It was still tasty, and I liked the addition of the spinach. The plate with the pljeskavica came with fries and a scoop of rice. The fries were definitely not hot and closer to room temperature, but we still ate them. The meat patty was seasoned well and was mixed with some minced onions. It was like eating a burger without a bun, which I didn't mind, but it didn't blow me away. I'm glad we gave Al-Bos a try and I would go back to order some different dishes - the schnitzel sounds great and the mixed grill/combo platters might be a good way to try some other things. I recently had a friendly lunch with friends at Al-Bos Bakery and Meat Market. This Bosnian-led restaurant was as genuine and welcoming as any place I visited in Sarajevo. The atmosphere was warm, inviting, and spacious. I ordered the lamb shank; with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. The meat easily fell off the bone, melted in my mouth, and paired perfectly with the potatoes and veggies. My friends opted for the Wiener Schnitzel and Paris Schnitzel, both of which they enjoyed. One of my favorite meals I've had in Grand Rapids. I can't believe I've never gone before. I had a flight delay at GRR so ended up coming here for lunch. We got some bread for free (it's a bakery, after all) and I ordered an Orangina to start, which made me reminiscent of trips to France. The cheese burek (filled pastry made with phyllo dough), stuffed with ricotta and feta, was warm and flaky and just to die for. I could probably eat it every day. It reheated really well in the toaster oven the next day, too! I also got the mini cevapi, which includes 5 hand-shaped, case-less Balkan sausages, lepina bread, diced onions, sour cream, and a delicious roasted red pepper sauce. I stopped by since it is near the airport and I wanted something else that is not burgers. The place does look iffy from the outside and the hours is not what anyone would normally expect. The moment I walked in, the staff was welcoming and helped me with my to-go order. He made suggestions based on what I was looking for and my budget. I stepped out a bit and came back. As it turns out, one of my friends loves this spot so we grabbed some dinner. We both ordered a flatbread style dish - mine was stuffed with feta cheese and my friends got a ground beef version. These were my favorite at Al Bos. Flaky, buttery layers of dough with a savory filling. I got this massive platter of meats because I couldn't decide on anything. Honesty felt like a little kid ordering chicken tenders again. It wasn't particularly amazing but I enjoyed it. The skewer and patties were decent but a little greasy for my taste. The rice came out cold while some of the other items were blazing hot. Owner was nice and the place was clean and quiet. I'd go back again, especially for their baked items. read more

Instead I got incredibly soggy white sliced bread with some tomatoes on top and they were out of tiramisu so they replaced with something else I did not ask for and just sprinkled some mocha over it. The staff is very friendly and inviting which made the whole experience enjoyable. We tried the cheap appetizer, Burek with Cheese, and we loved it. So flaky and full of flavor. I went back to Al-Bos for the 2nd time ever. This Time, I ordered a chicken sandwich with fries and a Meza appetizer, which consists of 12 pieces each of meet, cheese and green olives. Honestly it was great, the prosciutto was the best I had, the price is a bit high, but when you realize they make all their own stuff, you realize it's well worth it. We were in GR for a soccer tournament and both days I got food from here. It is exceptional. All pitas made from scratch, my favorite was meat borek. I still can't believe the reviews. Completely unfriendly service, no one there will talk to you unless you speak their language first, reminds me of an old dirty sports bar in Germany. This is the second time I've been to this restaurant. I just walked in and wanted to order cabbage rolls to go. They were so very nice to me and got my order up within 10 minutes. This was an interesting experience. It is a Europian restaurant with a Bosnian flair. It was very clean. I ordered the Goulash expecting what I am used to and got something much diffrent from American Goulash. Instead of beef or Italian Sausage mixed with noodles in a pasta sauce. You get chunks of very good beef next to mashed potatoes with a yummy gravy on top. Not what I think of when I hear Goulash but my stomach was VERY happy. I will be back. This unique market/cafe was introduced to me by my Albanian daughter-in-law. It attracts a Balkan clientele, but are friendly with everyone. Tho smallish you can find products unavailable anywhere else, and the cafe has wonderful selections. OMG where has this place been all my life. This place is absolutely phenomenal. I can't believe how great the food is here. I ordered the jaeger schnitzel and it was huge and flavorful, perfectly pounded veal, delicious gravy which made the fries like poutine sans the cheese curds. My husband got the stuffed schnitzel which brought me back to my childhood best friend whose mom made a very similar European stuffed chicken dish that I've longed to taste for years. We also got the cheese Burke, so yum. The price is incredibly reasonable and this is now in my top 3 favorite places to eat in GR! I can't wait to go to the store and to get home to dig into my chocolate Napoleon. Btw the server was amazing, he smiled, helped us choose what he thought we'd like, just a top notch fella. Personally I always come here specifically for the bread and market, i love seeing what international drinks there offering because you will never see it anywhere else. As part of our week of "eating around the world in Grand Rapids", we tried out Al-Bos. It was exceptional. The menu features authentic Bosnian and Eastern European dishes, most of which I couldn't pronounce let alone guess what was in them. So I ordered the mini- cevapi (because I always indulge in them at Festival of the Arts) My husband ordered the stuffed pljeskavica and to start we split an order of cheese filled bread. While we waited we enjoyed their house bread and butter and chatted a bit with one of the server/bartender, very nice and personable. The restaurant was filled with locals. Once the food was brought out we dug in, everything was amazingly good. The bread was crispy and the cheese perfect, my cevapi were tender and the bread pillowy soft. I do wish I had remembered to ask them to hold the onions. When we were finished we visited the grocery store next door and picked up a couple of desserts to take home. One thing to note is the descriptions on the menu aren't very specific so be brave and just order.
