Beautiful location, the cornerstone where development of Garbatella started, so it's only fair that Moschino would offer only the most authentic Roman cuisine. Their forte is "rigatoni alla Gricia", which is the "white amatriciana", another traditional dish. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try everything else, which I did. Other appetizers (supposedly to share...) include buffalo mozzarella, grilled eggplants, the amazing frittata and hand-cut ham. When I'm not ordering pasta, the meatballs are an excellent option, or the stuffed eggplant, but the usual fare is on the menu (saltimbocca alla romana, coda alla vaccinara etc.), provided you're offered one. Most likely they'll recite the options by heart, with the informal, down to earth camaraderie of the waiters. Some other comments talk about prices being too high or the place having lost is luster, but that's not my experience. Since we were the very first customers, the staffs took their time to help us order. They don't speak English much, but we managed to realized they specialized in horse meat and organs. Since my friend doesn't eat horse, we settle with the combo platter and chicken spaghetti. The reason we visited is because our bnb host recommended it. My friend wanted wide pasta, he told us to come here. So you can imagine our shock to realized it's not a simple pasta restaurant but indeed s hard core Roman cuisine! The dishes were great. Everything was tender and flavorful. Thought it's hard to guess what's on the platter. We think there were liver, stomach, tail, blood cube and brain? Not sure! The spaghetti was savory and delicious. Thought I think there's more than just chicken. The restaurant got flooded with locals within 30 minutes and became loud and lively. There's no menu and staffs were super busy, so come early if you want to get your order in before the chaos. When we paid upfront, we got to meet Mary. She's much older and very friendly. So it is a ways out. Make sure you have a taxi or Uber phone number you can call after you are done because taxis don't come into the neighborhoods on a regular basic. If you don't, you have to walk two blocks out into the main street where taxis do pass. We got there at 7:50pm and the place was completely empty, only the employees were sitting around. They asked if we had a reservation, which I replied no. They kinda gave a facial indication of a problem but told me "it's ok, follow me". We followed the waiter to the last table again the wall of the back of the restaurant and he said, "kitchen does not open until 8pm." Even though their hours are posted as 6pm open. I told him no worries I will drink the house red wine until you open. Ok? Ok. The food is the best I tasted in Rome on our 3 day visit. Pastas: Oxtail Ragù was the best, great meat and tomato flavor! The cabornara not too creamy with small chunks of pancetta was excellent too. One thing I noticed in Rome's pastas is the saltiness. The pastas here are seasoned perfectly, not too salty. Horse Carpaccio: It comes dried and stringy sprinkled over a green salad and shaved Parmesan. One of the best salads I've ever had. Can't describe the horse meat but it was good, not game-y. The salad was dressed perfectly. I order two of these dishes that's how much we like it. We also ordered the fried white broccoli and the grilled steak, which were also great. It gets real lively and busy around 9:30pm. The service gets a bit distracted when it gets busy so come early if you don't have a reservation. I will certainly be back!

They all met up, and my father-in-law kept in frequent contact with some of the relatives in his generation. Last month, Matt and I went to Rome, where most of the clan lives--Accumoli, the tiny village they came from, was destroyed by an earthquake in 2016, bringing the elders down to the city. It was my first time in Italy, and Matt's first time in almost thirty years, and we took the opportunity to get together with his Italian family. We met up at Porto Fluviale, a fun, casual trattoria and pizzeria in Testaccio, an easy jaunt on the subway away from central Rome. Matt's relatives were coming from Trastevere and Garbatella and various other parts of the city, and I'm assuming this place worked as a central meeting point. It was far enough away from the tourist zone that most of the people there seemed to be Italian. I'm including our ethnically Asian waiter in this group. He was so thoroughly Italian he didn't even throw me a nod. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial. We were a big party and took over a long row of connected tables. Most of us sat down at 7:30, when we had a reservation, but one of Matt's nth cousins came later with two of his children, one of them almost the same age as Matt the last time any of these relatives saw him. The set-up was ideal for a large, amorphous, maybe-we're-eight-people-maybe-we're-twelve kind of group. Service was great. We were well taken care of, and got one of our servers to take a few commemorative pictures. We drank red wine and enjoyed a wonderful, cozy Roman dinner. I wasn't what you might call hungry after a large lunch and afternoon gelato, but I liked everything that was ordered for the table. There was a great spread of deep-fried appetizers, and I was happy to try suppli alla romana, a tasty Roman fritter I otherwise didn't have on this trip. The fiori di zucca con alici were great, battered and fried stuffed squash blossoms, as was the filetto di baccalà, or salt cod fritters. And I appreciated the savory, salty olive all'ascolana, a dish I'd never seen before, olives stuffed with meat and fried crispy and golden. I also had some Roman-style Margherita pizza, which was satisfying with a thin, crackery crust. Finally, there was the tiramisu, lush and delicious. I loved taking part in this giant Italian family dinner, which only ended some time after Matt's elderly Uncle Giovanni sneaked off to pay the check. We came with a group as part of a tour before heading to see the sights in Rome. It is located on a family farm, and doesn't feel touristy at all! It is actually very close to the city( within 30 minutes) but feels like you are out in the country! The building is beautiful and also has a winery just down the walkway. We started out having Italian bacon and grilled bread as an appetizer while being served pitchers of red and white wine(which were home produced). The bacon was the best I've ever tasted and a bit different in color than what we see back at home in America. While we were sampling appetizers, we watched "Mama" demonstrate making homemade pasta. The main course was mouth-watering and delicious: we were served meat lasagna and also another soft pasta in a special tomato sauce. Both were incredible but the lasagna was my personal favorite. Make sure the food is fresh when ordering in Rome, Pizza al Foglia (By the Square) normally just sits there so best to get it as it arrives.
