I remembered when this used to be Ankara and I wanted to try it out now that it switched to Ala! My friend and I stopped in after work one day and sat at the bar. We had a great experience from the beginning to end. All of the workers were super friendly and offered up their menu suggestions. For cocktails we ordered: Levant (sumac lined the rim and really made this drink amazing) Har (even though I don't like whiskey, you could barely tell it was in here! It was definite still strong, though) Halfeti (a very floral based drunk but a perfect light sweetness) Kaliteli (my least favorite of the night, but my friend enjoyed it!) For food: Harissa Hummus (8/10) - I'm super picky with hummus because i can make a great homemade hummus and I know how simple it can be to make a good quality hummus and this one doesn't disappoint! It doesn't seem like it would normally come with pita though, since we ordered it separately as a dish and didn't get any extra with the hummus. Taboon Bread (9/10) - served warm with some great spices . Went great with the hummus Dolma (7/10) - I'm not the biggest fan of dolmas to begin with but these are served warm and I enjoyed them! I really liked the Tarhana chips they put on top, though! Golden Cauliflower (8/10) - not bad! It was a nice flavor with the pomegranate seeds added Manti (10/10) - vegan mini dumplings. They kind of look like German spaetzle but they're filled with beans! Both of our favorites of the night. We were full but I kept coming back to this Toum ribs gyro (8/10) - the bartender suggested thjs and the short ribs were definitely really good! The bread underneath was about as thin as a tortilla rather than a pita and I think could've been more of a pita thickness. Duck prosciutto (8/10) - my friend was a big fan. The prosciutto went really well with the orange served with it Halva Mousse (10/10) - this dessert was a star and worth the stomach pain from being too stuffed. It's a red pepper that's been fermenting and then charred filled with a chocolate mousse and halva with cherries on the side. It sounds scary but it's SO worth it. It's a little experience too since the charred pepper is kind of like a hard shell around the mousse that you have to hit to open! All in all, I'd definitely suggest this restaurant to anyone visiting and wanting a really good Levantine experience that doesn't break the bank! read more

It was a late - but warm - autumn Thursday night and work had been busy, so it seemed like a little treat to go out for dinner. I looked out the window of my office and saw Ala. I had never been and had always wanted to try it. There was a huge crowd there and it seemed to be the right time to go. We did not have reservations but got a table almost immediately. We sat outside and enjoyed the last rays of the warming sun. We picked our drinks and our appetizers and waited to see how this place was. The service was excellent. Our waitress was very energetic, friendly and talkative (in a good way). She knew a lot about the menu and the food; she helped us navigate dishes, many of which were unknown to us. I wish I had gotten her name because she deserves a specific "shout out" at a job well done. She was so friendly and likeable. Likewise, the ambiance of the restaurant hits a high note. The decor and decorations are exotic in a good way. I liked the draping materials hung around the terrace. I liked the twinkle lights all around, the lanterns, the patterns and colors. It is a good looking dining area. The food was good but not great. The carrot spread was tasty but I am not sure I would crave it again. It was heavy on the spices. The pita slices were very good and just hit the line between soft/chewy and crispy. Well done on the pita slices! The feta croquettes were disappointing though. While most of the food is HEAVY on the spices, the feta croquettes were uninspired, tasting only of feta. There was no additional flavor or twist to the presentation either. I love feta but I expected the croquettes to have something that elevated this dish; alas, it was like biting into a hunk of feta cheese, which I like. However, I expected this restaurant to add a new and different dimension to this appetizer. But they did not. The worst thing, IMHO, was my main course of lamb kabobs. I love lamb and almost always order it when it's on the menu. These kabobs, however, tasted more of char and over-cooking than lamb itself. I expect a place that has multiple kabobs on the menu to hit the mark every single time. Ala did not. Cut back on the flames and let the lamb flavor shine through! Leave a little "red" in the middle to enhance the taste and maintain some moisture. The dry charcoal taste did nothing for me. The rice pilaf was, like the carrot spread, very heavy on the spices; too heavy for my taste. We did not finish this dish. And, for me, it was the disappointing lamb kabobs that bring down the review to only 3 stars. Maybe I just got a bad batch. Maybe the kabobs are usually perfect. But, for me, if I can't taste the lamb, I say "no thank you, ma'am." I might try Ala again if a group of friends really wants to go there but, left to my own desires, I will not visit again. read more

My boyfriend and I came to all off for the first time and we had a great experience! The vibe of the restaurant was eclectic and modern with a welcoming and trans and a warm outdoor atmosphere where we were seated (although the chairs are not super comfortable). We got a glimpse of the inside, which also looked snazzy, so I could see this being a great place for a date or special occasion in general. I was even all about the cool music playlist that was playing too lol. To get things started, we looked at the drink menu, which offers a lot of variety and interesting cocktails. I got the strawberry fields comma and my boyfriend got the garden drink, and they did not disappoint. We started off our meal with taboon and the zaalouk spread, which was great. Then we shared a lamh bi ajin flatbread and the red snapper (all small plates), which was a good portion size for us both, and we left filled. Everything came out quickly, with nice presentation, and tasted delicious and fresh! Food was definitely a 5/5. The prices were reasonable as well. The service was overall good. The host seated us and told us that someone would be our server, but we never had anyone else come to our table except for the host, so I guess she ended up being our server? She was nice and answered our questions though a little bit sarcastic lol. The busboys did a good job eyeing our table to ensure that our water levels we're good and cleared our table when we finished our dishes. Not a big deal, but I did think it was a little bit odd that no one came to check on us to see how we were doing after we got any of our drinks or dishes, even though we were seated right in the middle of everyone's paths. Luckily, the food was great and we had no complaints but just an observation (maybe because we didn't have an official server?). 4.5 overall but rounding up to a 5 :) I would definitely recommend and return to ala. Popped in for the Yelp Elite event and what a treat it was!! This place is absolutely adorable - it gives quaint Euro cafe vibes with a perfola adorned with flowes for decor and bench seating lining the inside and outside walls. To start with we ordered a bottle of reserva wine which was really enjoyable. The boon bread and labneh, the labeh had some caramelized onions which added a different and enjoyable twist. We then ordered the cauliflower, falafel red snapper and the small plate of short ribs. The snapper and falafel made me happy as I love well cooked fish and the hummus and labneh purée was divine! The chopped romaine lettuce gave it a nice additional crunch which was great. The falafel was perfectly seasoned with a great crispness but what stole the show was the variety of chopped pickles that topped the dish. Never in a million years would I pair falafel and pickles... this is why cuisine is one the bear forms of art ever!! The cauliflower had the slightest kick and well seasoned but was a little too soft for my liking. The ribs was my least favorite but my wife devoured it. The meat wasnt as tender as I would've liked but the pop of fresh mint was a nice touch. We also ordered a white sangria as it seemed to be really popular and now we understand why! So light and refreshing with hints of cucumber and mint - delish! I would love to come back and for a few tapas and enjoy the crisp breeze as we usher in Fall! Great place overall. read more

I came here for the bottomless brunch over the weekend and was really satisfied with my experience! I would definitely come back for their bottomless menu again. We ordered a bunch of things and everything was pretty good. The menu is extensive and everything sounds delicious. I highly recommend the garlic pita, meatballs (comes with mushrooms which make the dish soo good), and baklava. They're currently only doing outdoor dining due to COVID so make sure to make reservations! The only concern I had was that some tables weren't spaced out enough. We were seated right next to another table in their outdoor tent (my chair was pretty much only about 2 ft away from someone else's) and asked to move tables farther away from the others. Other than that, I felt relatively safe eating here. What really made my experience was my server, Kim. She made sure I was having a good birthday brunch experience, was great to chat with, and accommodated all of our needs. Kim - if you're reading this, don't be scared to cut your hair girl!! I almost didn't walk in because it was 5 and the place was empty. Don't make the mistake of not coming if you think it looks empty! I'm so glad I found this place. We ordered the bottomless dinner. I expected and ok service and decent food. I was wrong. The service was excellent and the food was above average, carefully crafted, and delivered hot! I want to especially shout out our server, Kim, she made the beat recommendations, she was friendly, charismatic, and attentive. She bumped up our experience, along with the manager/owner who also made sure everything was perfect. Big props to her! We had the sigara rolls, the shrimp, the salmon, meatballs, the chicken, the falafel, the hummus (2 kinds), the dolma, and almost every other dish and I can say they were all highlights! If you're looking for a solid brunch spot with bottomless drinks and food that will leave you full, ala is a great choice. ala kept showing up in my recommendations so I decided to give it a try for brunch as I caught up with a girlfriend. I made a reservation on OpenTable. They're extremely popular for brunch; the only reservation was 10 am. It worked out perfectly for us, but I'd recommend making a reservation at least a few days in advance. They're also on Resy. The interior is beautiful and spacious. I love the vibrant artwork on the walls and the different colored seats for the booths. They also have a spacious patio that I imagine is great during the warmer days. The brunch menu now includes three courses and a bottomless mimosa bar. If you're interested in a bloody mary just ask your server. The mimosa bar was the highlight for me. I especially appreciated the syrups in addition to the juices. My favorite combination was rose syrup, champagne, and a splash of cranberry juice. For our starters, we had truffle fries and fried halloumi. The truffles fries were pretty standard, but they give you plenty. My friend enjoyed the fried halloumi. We both originally wanted to try the feta croquettes but they were out. For our main courses, I had the shakshuka and my friend had the sucuk benedict. My friend really enjoyed the benedict. The shakshuka was just okay to me. It's one of my favorite dishes and I prefer it in tomato sauce. And for our sweets, we had the autumn spice cobbler and the challah toast. The cobbler was nice, light, and just enough for one person. There are plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. The service was great. Our server did a great job explaining the menu, immediately letting us know what wasn't available, and providing us with an update on time without being pushy. Waffling between three and four stars, but four stars for the service and ambiance, slightly less for the deliciousness of food. But that's a little more subjective so. Spectacular outdoor patio space that really shines in the fall weather (and inside space is gorgeous as well). I did not like my drink but if you are into floral and honey, you certainly will. Great presentation. Grape leaves were pretty good (but average, not spectacular) and halloumi was almost TOO fried, but I'd come back nonetheless. We had the $55 restaurant menu this year. To be honest, my experience with ala a few years ago was much better, but the food disappointed me this time. First, the soup and the adana kebap were both too salty. I couldn't have much of the soup at all. They gave a small piece of toast, which helped with the saltiness a bit. The kebap was seasoned too much as well; I had to eat it with a lot of sour cream and pita bread. The other dishes flared somewhat better. Piyaz salad and baharat tawook were flavorful and not too salty. The latter dish alone costs $48 if you order from a regular menu, so definitely worth ordering it with the restaurant week menu. For desserts, we got the halva mousse and aleppo sini kadaif. Both were amazing. I absolutely love the lavender cream that came with the aleppo sini kadaif and highly recommend that dish. read more

It's very obvious to see how Ala has the Michelin Star. From the second you walk in, you're transported somewhere else. The quality of service, the aesthetic, the Turkish chocolates they leave on the table, the little happy Birthday note they wrote, it's the level of detail that Ala puts into everything that makes the experience a great time. As someone who is a little pickier about cocktails, I am always skeptical about trying new things. After deliberating with the server, I was recommended the mismis and Lord have mercy, that drink was one of the most unique and best cocktails I've had. The rum wasn't overpowering, the dark cherry notes came through, and it felt tropical and went down easy-- ultimately, well-balanced. If you've seen the show Tastemakers on Netflix, it gave those level of vibes. My friends and I got a spread of food to share. Some notable foods include the Golden Cauliflower (literally one of the best I've had, it was gone in a few minutes), the fall off the bone short ribs, the Shish Batinjan (the eggplant which was cooked to perfection), Lamacun flatbread, and the Aged Beef Sucuk (we went back for more), and the most decadent/rich Baklava. My only notes on this place were that the hummus doesn't come with Pita bread (which is a crime in it of itself) and that the plates are small. When they said family style, someone at our table said, family for how many? BUT, this is a place I'd recommend for an upscale Mediterranean cuisine. Went to brunch here a few times and it has consistently been a great experience. The food is great, the drinks come out super fast, and the staff are very nice. The waiter let us play our music since it was our friend's birthday, and multiple other brunch parties were vibing to the music as well. Dined here last month for my bestfriend's birthday and I think this I a great place for groups due to the 3 course prix fixe menu; we made a reservation weeks in advance. The decor was very cute and they have cafe that sells pastries, desserts, and coffee; we sat there while waiting for our table to be ready. Our server was patient with us and did have to do some double checking of things due to allergies. The entire group had to select that option but the bottomless drinks were up to each individual. I enjoyed the bottomless mimosas and the bar of syrups, fruits, and other dink enhancements! My food was pretty good, the batata Hara was flavorful but mine arrived at room temperature at best and I like my food to be hot. I also tried the spinach croquettes and those were delicious. I opted for the quzi burger as I wanted to be sure I left full and the portion size didn't disappoint. The lamb was cooked perfectly and tasted good, I just wish it had sliced cheese as an option for the toppings. I selected the baklava for my dessert and it was pretty good; I didn't eat much as we had a cake brought in for the birthday girl (FYI there is a cake cutting fee, ours was waived due to an issue with someone else's dessert). I don't know how this place got a Michelin star. Definitely not for the dining experience and decor -- cinder block walls with fake ivy and tree branches, very cheesy surroundings. It was not for the service -- our server gave confusing and unintelligible explanation of the menu. It was not the food. We had two delicious appetizers that had a few extra seasonings or ingredients (pomegranate seeds, fig spread) that you might not get at, say, Lebanese Taverna, but otherwise not hard to find in any of dozens of mediterranean themed restaurants. We made a reservation for one of the greenhouses and when we got there they said it was first come first served. If we wanted to sit in one we'd have to wait 90 minutes. So just a warning because we got played. We were forced to sit outside, no sun, and those heaters don't do anything. That was the biggest downside for us. I don't know how people can enjoy their food when their toes are frozen. Anyways our server was great, and constantly topped off our drinks. The food was sooo delicious! My friends and I decided to start restaurant week with a trip to Ala. I had never been but they only had raving reviews so I was pretty excited to dine here! The restaurant itself is decorated beautifully with a dimly-lit interior, creating an elegant and refined ambience. The staff was incredibly friendly upon our arrival, and the vibe was just extremely classy and quiet. Onto the food! We decided to do the prix fixe restaurant week menu, which was a pretty good deal. For our first course, we ordered the Rocca Salad. The arugula was dressed lightly and was refreshingly tangy. The goat cheese crumbles paired well with the pomegranate flavors. We also ordered the Fried Halloumi, which I was most excited for, and wow this did not disappoint! The cheese was still airy and all of the garnishes complimented the cheese so well! This was absolutely delicious and a generous portion. For our main, we decided to go with the Toum Ribs Gyro. The meat was tender and wrapped in the soft blanket of the bread. There was a lack of sauce here, and I wish this was portioned bigger, but nonetheless it was delicious. We ended this immaculate line up with the Antep Baklava. This was back to being generously portioned, and was flaky and crispy even with a decent amount of syrup on it, and it went so well with the airy whipped cream. From the service to food, everything was exceptional. I definitely need to come back to try some more menu items! The first thing I have to say about Ala is that they have the best hummus I have ever tasted.  Now, I am not going to mention just how old I am, but, suffice it to say that quite a bit of hummus has passed these lips over the years and this is truly the tastiest.  The meal we had following this awesome hummus was so flavorful with an artful and generous use of spices. And, once year hear how much care and time goes into these dishes, you will be even more appreciative.  The roasted cauliflower was unexpectedly good, especially if you get enough sauce and pesto.  The red snapper was fried so well and crispy (the chef said it is the corn starch and he definitely seems to know what he is talking about.)  The short ribs were so tender and the baklava had this perfect consistency all the way through.  It wasn't soggy and it wasn't crackling - just smooth and tasty.  We also really enjoyed both cocktails we tried, the pandora and the mirra martini.   We ate at the room upstairs which is not as cushiony as the main dining room but is spacious and decorated with big wall art installations.  The service was great - very friendly and very efficient.  Parking is ready in near by lots or on the street. Ala is definitely on our list as a place to return to soon. read more

I didn't know this place was right across from the Barry's Bootcamp that I regularly attend. When I walked by, I thought the outside patio was very well decorated, as well as the inside. I really loved the garlic hanging from the ceiling. We did not have a reservation but we're seated next to the bar and the food came out quite quickly. To start we got the kousa mutabal and baba ghanoush. It comes with two pitas, and we ended up ordering more for an extra cost. My favorite was the roasted butternut squash kousa mutabal, which I have never tried before. We also ordered the lamb shish kebab, and tawook shish kebab. We actually got undercooked chicken, which we raised our waitress. They probably took care of it, by sending a new order and taking it off our bill. I did think that this sufficed in terms of rectifying the situation. Overall, I would definitely come back for the spreads. I am a huge spread girl. The service was also quick and friendly. I came here this past weekend for their unlimited brunch. I currently will only attend places that have patio seating and luckily, they have a nice sized patio that is partially covered too. We arrived at 12:30 and of course we all opted for the unlimited. Their brunch is unlimited small plates and drinks, but not just mimosas, it includes blood Mary's coffee, tea, and house liquor! Honestly, it's such a steal. Our server greeted us immediately and was very helpful and attentive. The food was good. I loved the dips, the veggies, sausage omelet, Turkish sausages, the meatballs,- all yummy! Only critique is i wish they brought more bread out at once for the dips (so maybe make sure to ask for double when you order if it's more than two of you). We alternated between the pineapple and grapefruit mimosas, which were both very good. We stayed our full two hour limit (and more) and received nothing but attentive and accommodating service. I wish I remembered our servers name (he had blue nail polish), but he was great! Overall, we had a real good experience and I def recommend ANKARA for brunch. read more

Came for the first time since Ankara switched to Ala. The food (bottomless brunch) is still amazing . The falafel with beetroot in particular and halwa (dessert item) were my favorite. My only recommendation would be for them to serve the mimosas for bottomless rather than create a bar where guests need to go get and pour their own drinks. This doesn't seem like the most safe option not only for people drinking but in the land of COVID. It was also just inconvenient. Otherwise though; still a stellar place for bottomless and wouldn't change my five star review! read more

We got reservations for dinner inside on the same day. The service was fantastic. Five stars for Kim! We ordered all the mezes gluten and dairy free. The mackerel was delicious- it has a dried jerky texture, crusted with peppercorn (I think) and came with a yogurt sauce on the side that my husband enjoyed. The hummus was tasty- more tahini in it than in Turkish or Greek cuisine. The calamari was okay. It came with farro on the same plate which was worrisome for my food allergies (I think they must've missed it) but I had a piece of the calamari that wasn't touching it. They added pomegranate seeds and it was heavily seasoned on top which was new and interesting. I didn't love this dish. I prefer a grilled lemon squid. The best dishes were the rib and lamb! The tenderness of the meat was delectable! Both were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Recommend giving this place a shot. Our next time back though I'd request outdoor seating. Such a great experience! From the staff to the food & ambience. The kebab was fantastic, but the star of the show was the Red Snapper with Hummus Sauce! The drinks were great too and if you didn't like anything they switched it out no questions asked. Bathrooms were clean & well maintained. All around a fantastic time. I had a large party reservation last Saturday and we had absolutely stellar service. Customer service is clearly a value here. What an amazing experience (Aka was a Michelin bib rated)! Loved all of the food got the brunch that was $44 per person with a bottomless brunch and a 3 course brunch. The only thing is they do not allow coffee as a swap for non alcoholic options. They also do not serve a la crate options so you need to do the 3 course bottomless brunch. The halloumi was delicious and fresh and had a nice contrast of sweet to salty. The fries were phenomenal and the feta dip was probably the least exciting of all of the appetizers. For entrees the lamb burger is a moveeeee it comes with fries as an FYI. the califlour kaffta was also very god and then we got the quiche. The mouse was so decadent and I would eat a whole bowl of that. Overall I will be making a trip back and was a great experience for me and my girlfriends! read more
