I talked to Jeff about replacemant of a full deck cover for my 24 foot sailboat. He came to the boat, took some measurements and said he'd e mail me an estimate the next day. I waited a week before I called (no estimate) and he said he'd been sick but would get to it that day. It's now been a week and a half and the estimate never did come. I wish he'd of just told me he didn't want to do the job instead of wasting my time with false promises! ---Fast forward a few hours--- Jeff called and explained there was a problem with communication lines and he did send an e mail but I didn't receive it. I needed to have snaps put on a small cover. Simple job. Talked to Jeff....he stated he was really busy and might take a few months....I was ok with that. After 4 or 5 months I finally got them to do the work. They didn't come prepared and said they had to go back. I called and emailed continuously. Got Jeff on the phone...lots of talk and apologies. He chatted my ear off on the phone which made sense. I have no doubt that all the talking and going in circles took longer than actually doing the 2 hours worth of work. I gave up. The worst part of the entire thing is he should have just told me he couldn't help me. It takes 2-3 months to get into any canvas shop. Now I have to wait for a different shop to do the work but at least I know it will get done. Being ignored is worse than bad customer service. It's just bad business. read more

Alameda Canvas is the name under which Jeff does canvas repairs. I left our first phone call thinking, "Wow, this guy is like a used car salesman." We used him one time in the past for a small job. He was expensive, but he got the job done. So then we engaged him for some further work on our boat, and had an exceptionally disappointing experience. Jeff blew off the appointment completely, and after the appointment had passed, called to apologize. We set another appointment for a later date and have not heard from him since. Yes, not a peep since. I realize that sometimes professionals get busy. However, just because you are busy does not mean that you should completely disrespect other's time. I recently enlisted Alameda Canvas to simply add a bimini to my boat, and started communications last November, 2018. I was told that I would get a quote and be in line for work by the first of the year, 2109. Since that time, I had to visit the shop, ask to be called, yet nothing has occurred. What this amounts to is a lack of someone giving their word, not being honest about doing the work which adds up to a hollow promise and lack of substance as a business. If they had given me a quote, started the project, and held to their world of seemingly professional behavior, I may have given them the job. Otherwise, I have ended up feeling inconsequential and sought another canvas shop that has already installed the frame and ready for covering within a week of request. I gotta say. Out of all the canvas covering places in Alameda, this one was the most professional by far! I called and left a message to ALL THE CONVAS COVER BUSINESSES IN ALAMEDA...ALL OF THEM!!! And these guy called me back and told me they are backed up on work and will get to me as soon as they can. which I imagine all of the other ones are backed up too, but atlea adds t these guys called me back to tell me they were backed up. Then once they were able to get to me (which wasnt that long of a wait at all) I would say a little over a week. They took my measurements for my entrance door and front windows and were very accommodating to my request to get to entrance door cover done before the front windows as we had nothing covering the entrance door in the morning when we sleep on our boat. Go with them guys. They did great work and communicate with me from beginning to end. I still havent got a call back from the other canvas businesses. Dont waste your time on anyone else read more

Unprofessionalism abounds at Alameda Canvas and Coverings. If you have marine canvas work to be done, best avoid this business or your project will likely end unpleasantly. Me: I have these eisenglass windows that need canvas recovering. ACC: Great. We can do that for you. We'll get you an estimate in a couple of days. Me (via email 4 days later): Just following up. Do you have an estimate yet? ACC: (no reply) Me (via phone 4 days later): Hey, just checking up. Do you have an estimate yet? ACC: Oh yeah, I'll be sure to get that to you tomorrow. Me (after not having received the estimate the next day or for 2 weeks after that): Hey, Jeff, I am picking up my canvas pieces. You obviously do not need or want the business. At least I now I have my canvas pieces back, although ACC did no work and cost me 3+ weeks in the process. Bottom line: if you want your project actually worked on and completed in a reasonable amount of time, look elsewhere. read more

Jeff was patient and helpful as he guided me through the different available Sunbrella fabrics. He made suggestions specific to my project, a soft top truck camper, and suggested tips for working with the fabric and sourcing tools and thread. Although I ultimately did not go through with the project because I found a hard top camper, I appreciated Alameda Canvas for being professional and taking the time to walk me through options. I'm glad I called ahead of time, because the summer months are busy for them, and they are frequently out on the docks working on client projects. I don't understand how the extremely negative reviews came about. Here's my experience in detail: Alameda Canvas is one of the few places that has a "long neck" sewing machine capable of replacing the front window on my dodger cover. Jeff explained that they charge by the hour, so I removed the cover and brought it in to them. Their original estimate was that it would take about a week to complete, but it took a little longer to get the material for the repair. Not their fault. I was out of town and when I called they explained the issue. He said it would be about a week longer, but two days later they called and said the dodger was ready. The cost was what what they'd estimated. When I went to install the dodger I found that the material that attaches bolt rope that slides into the track that holds the dodger down had degraded. As a result, the bolt rope pulled away from the dodger.I took it back in. Jeff explained that they'd looked at one side of the material and they apologized that they didn't catch it. He replaced the bolt rope for me at no cost other than the cost of material. My view is that everybody misses things sometimes; the issue is whether what is missed is not so serious and whether the person makes it good. That's the real test - whether they stand behind their work. On both counts I have to say definitely "yes". In this particular case, it was also easy to miss the problem, so no blame there. (I didn't see it either.) In general, Jeff was professional and friendly and made me feel completely comfortable (which is not always the case with people who work around boats). I will most certainly go back to them when I need a new cover entirely, or if I need another repair on something. read more

It's now July, 2018. I've been using the Weather Max cabin and hull covers Jeff and the team finished last year and I am totally satisfied. The material is light and easily stowed and the design was executed to minimize the time getting into the cabin so I can get to work on maintenance. I recently contacted Jeff about adding another set of snaps where the cover billows a bit around the cabin, and Jeff agreed to get on it. We both concluded that the hull cover "riding up" a bit at the amidships fenders should be left as is. It is surprising that after a year of use, adding a pair of snaps is the only improvement I could think of. Thanks Jeff and Rita. Great job!!! read more

Jeff at Alameda Canvas is a true professional. Did some covers for my classic sailboat and I am very pleased with the end results. It was a total custom job, requiring unique and complex pieces, and a fair amount of trial and error. Jeff was a real perfectionist, and redid a few pieces that would have been functional, but were not up to his standards. It certainly took more time and effort than his proposal could cover, but at the end of the job, Jeff actually declined my offer to pay him more. There are lots of complaints about those in the canvas industry. Challenges with deadlines and commitments are commonplace. But when you consider how small these shops are, with almost no margin for profit, you can see how they have a difficult time responding to the ebb and flow of market demand. You really need to approach your project with patience, and an understanding of what they go through. Having said that, Jeff was always honest and clear with his communications. I knew the end product would be great, and it was. I would not hesitate to use him again. read more

I have to say that Jeff is a great canvas repair man. He replaced the eisenglass on our dodger. It is a fabulous job. We are very happy with the repair. After calling all the canvas shops in my area they are the only ones that had the ability to repair our dodger as it is basically one piece and very hard to work with. Jeff had to get the eisenglass in a role so it was a special order. He got the order in a timely manner and we had the dodger back on the boat within a reasonable amount of time. I bought a new sailboat and the dealer recommended using Alameda Canvas for a cockpit bimini rather than getting the factory option, which is what I did. The custom work was far superior to the off-the-shelf product (yes, I saw the difference). Jeff, the owner, worked closely with me and offered lots of great suggestions and he was able to design and fabricate a bimini that was tailored to my standing height and the specifics of the boat. I was impressed with his depth of knowledge about materials and what works best in terms of ergonomic design, longevity (UV sunlight effects) and being visually integrated with the shape and color of the boat. In the end I wound up spending several thousand dollars on extra canvas work and couldn't have been more pleased with the results. The overall quality of the work was excellent and Jeff worked with me every step of the way from consultation to design, fabrication and installation. I will admit that I did not price-shop nor was I in any hurry to get the work done because the broker was still commissioning the boat, and this was during the "slow" winter season. The estimate I got for the work was the invoiced amount; no surprises, no up-selling. I'm very happy with the results. read more

Have to agree with CJ G. above. Totally Unprofessional and Unethical outfit. My conversation started Mid July with Jeff. The project was a canvas cover for a new outdoor BBQ Island. Had told him that I must have the cover before it rains, end of Sept at the latest. Sent him photos and dimensions on 7/15 per his request. Another set of dimensions sent to him on 7/26 as per his annotated photos. After several calls and email, finally a quote on 8/1 with recommended the fabric to use. He has to order the fabric since he does not have enough. I give him to go ahead on 8/7. Comes home on 8/17 to create the patterns for the BBQ Island. After several inquiries via phone and email, on 8/20 says "we are starting to cut & sew the pieces together" and will have it done asap...has to go out of town on personal business. After more inquiries, responds via text on 10/2 saying back in town tomorrow and will contact me. Needless to say, no response. Inquired again via phone and text on 10/7 to find out what is going on. No response at all since then. So I have been left hanging high and dry. It rained heavily in mid-Sept and water got into my BBQ cabinets and ruined all the contents (which I had warned him about). Total waste of 2 and 1/2 months. If he started sewing on 8/20, it takes only a couple of days to finish, so I am suspicious that this was never started. Do business with these guys at your peril! read more
