He worked at Ralph Lauren and Paul Stuart before opening his own store. It is high end and elegant with a selection of ties, pocket squares, tuxedos and classically stylish suits. I was like a kid in a candy store - at 6'6" 220, I have always had to buy suits extra large and have them re-cut... not a fun process. Shirts? forget it - 39 sleeve, 17.5 neck. They don't make them anywhere, and custom shirts are usually out of my price range. Cameron was very knowledgeable, and never pressed or tried to up-sell me anything. The gear came in in a timely fashion, and Cam even rushed my order a bit to help me out since I got two suits and two shirts, one of which I needed quickly for a wedding I was attending. When the order came in, I went to pick them up and he had some nice matching laces for me - a very nice touch. I only went with the mid-range tier suits but the service was still very high end. We tried everything on to ensure a proper fit, and I was on my way. When I first went to wear one of my shirts, I noticed a very small imperfection on the fabric and when I asked Cameron about it, he replaced the shirt free of charge with no hesitation. But you'll probably end up wearing the Ascot Chang shirts more than anything else in your closet -- they fit perfectly. The price is worth it to me because I'd rather pay $100-something for a piece of clothing that fits just right and is exactly what I want (and that I wear all the time) rather than $60 for a shirt that is neither (and that I don't like wearing). When I was a poor student living in New York, I would occasionally walk by the Ascot Chang shop on 57th, and I remember thinking those shirts were just the most bespoke thing on earth. Now that I can afford the occasional splurge, I have to say that everything about Ascot Chang is as great is I imagined it would be. The service is old-worldly and wonderful. You can choose between literally hundreds of different fabrics, patterns, etc. They take so many measurements -- necessary because no one except maybe Denzel Washington is actually symmetrical. They even measure the size of my watch so that the left cuff can hang at the same length as my right. You choose from a dozen different collars, cuffs; you choose whether you want a pocket, whether you want a seam here or a pleat there -- it's actually amazing to see how the subtle differences affect the overall shirt. I first ordered my shirts at the shop in Hong Kong (the Prince Building shop, not the one at the Peninsula Hotel). Now, when I need more, I wait for my Hong Kong tailor to make his rounds twice a year in major US cities. He charges the Hong Kong price, which is about 20% less than the US shops, and the shirts are made by the same people using the same fabrics. One London dispatch introduced me to Cad & The Dandy, a young Savile Row tailoring house founded by James Sleater. I took the Piccadilly line to Green Park and descended into the company's lower-level workspace. Fabric books, tools, and unfinished garments gave the room the energy of a real atelier. Savile Row also taught me something about advancement. Its culture depends on apprenticeship and the transfer of trust from experienced craftspeople to those they believe are ready to carry the tradition forward. Talent is judged through close observation, with character and manners considered alongside technical ability. Being chosen by people who understand the craft creates a different authority than advancement based solely on supposedly objective measures. James embodied the best parts of that culture without absorbing the neighborhood's capacity for stuffiness. He had Mayfair-level acumen with Mancunian approachability, little ego, and a sense of humor that made an intimidating purchase feel relaxed. He studied how I stood, explained lapels and proportions, and guided me through fabrics with confidence rooted in tradition and attention to the person before him. When we reached the shirts, I told him to make me what he wore, including the cutaway collar, because his own clothing was the strongest recommendation in the room. What arrived several weeks later exceeded my expectations. The suit was flattering and comfortable enough for long days at work, while the shirts were equally good under a jacket or with jeans. James measured with judgment as well as precision, accounting for movement, posture, and how fabric behaves on a real body. Older colleagues joked that the firm must be paying me too much because my suits looked so expensive, one of the best compliments I have received. Years later, James began visiting New York for trunk shows while building toward a permanent American presence. So since my husband had gotten a great 3 piece suit there the year before, I went to St. Laurie's and got 3 skirt suits and a blazer. It was quite a stretch for us but they were beautiful and I knew I would wear them for years. When I got home, they rescinded the offer. St. Laurie's was so kind. They let me return my clothes. I cried and cried as I boxed them up and shipped them. I have always treasured that kindness. My husband still wears his suit.
