Had a brand new table with water damage from a leaky vase. I called Alan and they first tried to repair it but were unable to do so. The table needed to be refinished. I am in awe at how quickly and professionally the refinishing was handled. Not only did they refinish the top, I also asked for a piece of glass to be added to the top in order to prevent damage in the future. (On a side note, I have had only miserable experience with glass companies) Alan and his crew were able to refinish the table and get the glass top back to me within the week! Pros: Mr. Karzen is reasonable priced and will pick up and deliver your items free of charge. Cons: The actual work is done by other people, which is supervised to some degree by him. He can also be a little abrasive at times, and is a little fast and loose with deadlines. Overall, I would say that I have had an OK an experience with his business so far and would maybe hire him again to restore other furniture, depending on the specific piece. If I were a customer in the future the one thing that I would do differently is making sure that I had a written agreement about the work to be done instead of just a receipt. We had a little hiccup, which he corrected. He does have business ethics and integrity, which I think is his best feature as a small business owner. read more

I had a horrible experience using Alan Karzen Restoration. Besides doing a poor job on my antique buffet, they also damaged the piece while delivering it back to me (they did try to repair it, but the damage is still visible) and charged me double what I had been quoted when he picked the piece up. We used this service on 2 tables that I scratched the crap out of. They did an amazing job on the one that I actually took a chunk off the edge. The other one had surface scratches & some were "cross grain". While it definitely looks a lot better, it clearly still had pronounced scratches upon delivery. I was really surprised that they would even deliver something in that condition since they said it would be completely "fixed". I would have expected a call & then come to the shop see & have explained what the issues were. He had several explanations that seemed rather hollow. But, I came away EXTREMELY IMPRESSED because he immediately offered me all my money back. I would DEFINITELY recommend him for basic refinishing & would definitely use him again. This level of honesty is rare today. He has a great sense of integrity!! read more

I have always done my own furniture restoration in the past, but I had come across this old Victorian dining table that had obviously been abused. There was actually newspaper print imprinted on the top of the table, most likely from not being used and letting junk sit on top of it for years. The detail on the sides of the table was just gorgeous and I was unable to pass it up, even though I knew restoring it was out of my league. I had met Alan Karzen in the past at Chamber of Commerce meetings and decided I would give him a call. What sold me, without even seeing his work, was that I knew he loved furniture and restoring furniture by the way he spoke. He even said to me, "It is so nice to see somebody with taste for old furniture." The process went flawlessly, from when his staff picked up the table at my OLD house, until they dropped it off at my NEW house. I can not be any happier, nor can my wife. I had a piece of furniture that needed to be repaired due water damage from a leaking roof. After giving me an estimate of $2,500 for the breakfront which he valued at $10,000, I called Alan Karzen to pick up the furniture for repair. He made a derogatory comment about my home then winked at me. When loading the furniture into his van, he left the drawers sitting on my snowy driveway on a day when the temperatures were hovering at freezing. When my general contractor questioned him on it, he was then rude to her. He bumped the furniture against the door frame on the way out. Angie's List offered a coupon for 10% off labor. When I asked him about using it he told me, "I'm working for your insurance company... well, I'm working for you but your insurance company is paying me and they are not interested in a discount." He did not honor the coupon. Due to a change of circumstance, I decided not to have him refinish the piece and hired someone else to pick it up. Mr. Karzen charged me $400. When I questioned the high charge he said it was for his time. He came out twice (once for the estimate, once for the pick up), gave an estimate and "kept my furniture safe". I do not know of any company that charges for estimates or charges $400 for pickup and a few days of storage. He said he would prefer cash but would take a check upon pick up. The furniture was not at his shop but in another location and apparently the work was being done by someone else. That person only wanted cash and gave my workmen a very hard time but finally accepted the check. read more
