I've been visiting Dr Chen for a couple of years now for cleanings and general dentistry work (fillings, etc). I appreciate his professionalism, knowledge and straightforward approach to my dental care. His hygienists are great, thorough and fun to talk to. We've bonded over my love of Cocofloss, lol. Long overdue review - I've been a patient of Dr. Chen's for about a decade, or maybe more at this point. Prior to switching to this office, I saw a couple dentists who were way too aggressive in their interventions and my biggest regret is the amount of unnecessary dental work I received. In contrast, Dr. Chen takes a very conservative approach to interventions and is consistently kind & thoughtful providing a very pleasant & gentle atmosphere. I am writing another review to express my gratitude for Dr. Chen. He consulted with me after an anxiety producing experience at another dentist, that I only saw because I was in my periodontist's office when they said I needed an inlay-so I just got it done in a rush. What followed the inlay was the worst experience ever. The dentist started grinding the new inlay but then went to the other side of my mouth and ground it down, resulting in a bite that was off, and ended up producing major anxiety from the new position. He then told me I needed a total bite adjustment which I didn't want and didn't come there for and that it would cost $750 more!! Needless to say I didn't do it because he created the issue. Dr. Chen let me know I had just needed a filling not an inlay, and reassured me that in time my bite would likely adjust as teeth usually grow to meet one another. His kindness and compassion at a time when I felt anxious and distraught, were so helpful and he really educated me about how to approach the issue. He is also conservative with treatment never upsells, and educates you to be your best. He is amazing. I also loved his grace in never criticizing the dentist who did this to me, and taking the high road. I feel lucky to be under his care. read more

My wife and I have been dental patients of Dr. Chen for many years. He is an absolute expert at Dentistry and also an expert in being kind, professional and a really nice individual. He is extremely honest and will always tell you the truth in terms of what you need done even if it is not always good news. We would like to debunk the absolutely untrue and horrible review given by Monica S. Apparently, she used an "alias" to write it. Yelp should NOT post reviews from people that "hide" behind a phony name and persona. None of us like to hear bad news re: our teeth however it is never necessary or appropriate to insult or denigrate someone such as Dr. Chen because one is unhappy with the state of their teeth. We have had our share of news re: work needed on our teeth, however we still consider Dr. Chen a consummate pro at it relates to dentistry. To quote Dr. Chen to said "Monica" in his reply: You conveniently left out the part where I went out of my way to replace two failed fillings on the implants you said the oral surgeon had recently replaced for you. I replaced those fillings for you FREE OF CHARGE as I thought I was doing the oral surgeon (who truly is wonderful, BTW) a favor. When I spoke to him about that later, he told me those crowns weren't even his. In all, I spent 90-minutes with you at your appointment. You walked away with two brand new fillings at no charge and yet here you are, upset that I gave you news that you didn't want to hear (despite being the facts), and that I dared to charge you $150 for the time spent and services rendered". What a horrible experience with this dentist. I would never go back and I would urge everyone to go elsewhere. I was referred by an oral surgeon I trusted so I expected much better. First off, in the midst of the Omicron surge, it was clear this office did not take coronavirus very seriously. The dentist himself was only wearing a blue cloth surgical mask, the type you and I would wear and not even N95 or KN 95, much less a face shield over that as many dentists have been doing during the pandemic. He had to say everything twice to the assistant before she understood what he was talking about, another bad sign. What began as him asking me when my last tooth cleaning was - to which I said a year but when I checked my records later, it was really only about six months, he said I should have cleanings three or four times a year. Then he started checking my upper teeth with that sharp object and was digging it into my gums to measure. It was hurting a lot. So he says to me, suddenly, "there's nothing me or any other general dentist can do for you. You need immediate gum surgery or you will be losing your teeth in the very near future." I was in absolute shock. What? Due to my oral surgery/dental implants, an ordeal that began in March 2021 I have spent hours in dental chairs and no one else has ever said this--except this guy. I also am extremely diligent about oral health, waterpicking, flossing, etc., every single day. Wouldn't you think if this was so severe and all my teeth were about to fall out that a medical professional would notice this? Hello! Then he proceeds to give me the name of a periodontist and says "I don't get a kickback from this." Really? If you didn't, why would you even mention it? The office made a point of telling me they didn't accept insurance and happily charged me $150 for this horrendous visit where this man was trying to frighten me that I needed immediate medical attention or my teeth would all be falling out. What a nightmare and what an unprofessional way to handle this situation from start to finish. read more

The truth from a 'never reviewer' I have had a lifetime of dentistry. I've had implants, bonding, veneers, bridge, root canals and more. Dr Chen is the best dentist I've ever had. He's talented, kind, sensitive and reasonable. One of my veneers fell off a few years ago & he came in in his day off to fix it. I just had an accident and my front teeth broke & after I saw him & had questions, he wrote an email saying I know it's tough, but we'll help you through this. This is a long overdue review. I have been seeing Dr. Chen for about 10 years. He has a great bedside manner. He is very calm and I always feel at ease..even if he is delivering bad news! If he has a concern about a tooth, he never rushes me into having it treated. He always waits and keeps an eye on things before moving forward. I really appreciate that as many dentists are quick to do work that's often unnecessary. He office staff is very pleasant and competent. His hygienists are amazing...I don't think I have ever had a bad experience with any of them. The office is beautiful and they validate parking for the lot in the building which is a big plus! Although they require payment up front, they promptly submit it to my insurance company for reimbursement to me. I have also had some cosmetic work done by Dr. Chen, and he is a perfectionist. One of the best dentists I have ever visited. I've been a patient for years and embarrassingly only now found the time to write this review. Dr Chen is honest, professional and above all, kind and understanding. His staff is as good as he is - they are all rockstars and I have to give a shout out to Maya, Shirley and Liz and everyone else who works with him. I could not be any happier and have taken my whole family to see Dr Chen. Found my exceptional new dentist who has phenomenal team of hygienists too. Dr. Chen is a people person, professional, skilled, patient, and very respectful. On the consultation, he explained everything and answered every question. I was looking for a dentist who would be conservative. I like healthy teeth and want to keep mine. Full mouth X-rays were taken during the consultation, there was one area of a tooth that could either be the natural shape of my tooth or a cavity, Dr Chen asked me to get my prior X-rays so he could have all the information. Other dentists I have been to would have jumped to get that area filled, not waiting to get the information on whether there is an actual issue or not. Most dentist don't take the time to save the healthy teeth, but Dr. Chen does everything he can to make sure his patients do. Really like that Dr. Chen cares to get the whole picture. My previous dentist retired and it took me finding Dr. Chen to trust someone enough to get to the teeth cleaning. I have been to Lynette and Joan for teeth cleaning. They were both exceptional at what they did and they way they treated me. I was untrusting to begin with and they listened and were patient. I was pretty high maintenance and a scaredy cat and that went away as I got to see them do their job and take into account my concerns. They were the first hygienist team that took notes on where my tooth sensitivities are and were careful so I didn't shoot through the roof. And Lynette gave me some great tips on preparing the next time. Both were proficient, thorough, patient and cared. Their office has the high tech stuff and also movies and all that, but I found the beautiful ocean scene savers perfect. Every time I went I found street parking, but there is a garage. And the reception desk people were awesome. Meagan is the gate keeper - the one I spoke with first and set my appointments. She and the rest of the team are a reflection of who Dr. Chen is. I always find if the people in the office are happy and kind, it's because they have an excellent leader. I just had a really great consultation with Dr Chen regarding some difficult crown work done by a previous dentist. He was thorough and gentle in his exploration; not rushed. He explained the issues so I could understand, along with the likely resolution and several options. He spent a lot of time with me and answered all my questions such that I left armed with an understanding of what has been causing my pain. Late Post. I meant to post this sooner. My first visit was on the first Saturday of August. I am using my benefits, I'm entitled to two cleanings a year now! So I asked my friends if they had any recommendations. I got lucky that a friend works at a very detailed dental group. It was my first time watching a movie during a cleaning. Any questions were answered descriptively, I enjoyed my experience. Would recommend! I would like to say, a lot of dental groups (and medical care) is priced by greedy bastards, who also just try to upsell. They also have monotonous answers like they don't care, just working for the paycheck ya know... I would like to say, I did not get that feeling at all here during my visit. I have already booked my next cleaning with them! My dental hygienist was very helpful in showing me which areas I need to clean better in and not just give the typical end-of-cleaning speech. She let me floss and brush in front of her, so she could help me notice which areas I seem to not be reaching enough as they needed more cleaning on (tartar build up is the indicator)... That was the first time I've had a dental hygienist care about that. (I'm good on my dental hygiene and they helped me be even better!) 5/5 stars from me. Thanks Aimee! read more

I was shopping for a new dentist and thus I turned to Yelp for some advice. So, I just returned from a routine cleaning and Dr. Chen lived up to his reputation. Everyone in the office was great! Clean, relaxed surroundings. The Hygienist was cool and maybe the first one I've ever encountered that didn't give me some big guilt trip for not flossing enough. Dr. Chen uses digital X-rays, which are a new development, and were definately a more pleasant process than the old-school film style (with less radiation too!) I agree with Pamela that you don't get a sense of commerce the way you do in some offices. Some dentists leave you feeling like you've just visited a used car dealership or something. Not here. I didn't get a lollipop or a balloon animal, but otherwise Dr. Chen exceeded my expectations. read more

Maybe I'll just start eating beard papa's cream puffs for breakfast, three mix-in cold stone's for lunch and blueberry pancakes with extra maple syrup for dinner. I want to come back here as often as possible. OK, maybe there's some hyperbole there (or maybe I'm just a masochist)... but seriously, I was almost disappointed when Dr. Chen determined I had no cavities on my first visit here this morning. Almost, mind you. This place is a complete 180 from my previous dentist's practice. The old place always lost records, used antiquated equipment and had a high turnover rate of teeth "professionals" (I'd never get the same guy). At Dr. Chen's, you immediately sense the comfort level from the receptionist. An added bonus hearing Gloria Estefan singing throughout the office instead of music meant for the morgue. The dental assistants are super friendly and they're clean freaks (I noticed mine wiping down the equipment immediately after getting my x-rays done). Oh yeah, the prints are all digital x-rays here- less radiation and instant viewing on the monitor. The assistant even made sure I wrote down yelp.com for her- she's a big time foodie! Dr. Chen was very comprehensive in his exam. He noticed I have a propensity to grind my teeth while I sleep. Most doctors would try to push the expensive custom mouth guard immediately. Instead, he advised me to try the OTC one first (about 400 bucks cheaper). If it caused jaw discomfort, then I should consider the custom guard. The cleaning hygienist was awesome! During the scraping and polishing, she talks about her son's b-boy crew and his graff work. The hard part of the cleaning flies by when you enjoy the conversation (or the one-way talking most of the time). She even let me know I can bring my Ipod along to future visits. Clean, hi-tech and friendly. If you're looking for a new dentist, switch to Dr. Chen immediately. I've been going to Dr. Chen since 2006 and he is a very capable dentist to say the least! His calm and soft-spoken bedside manner makes me feel at ease and I love that he takes the time to explain what they're going to do to my teeth if I ask questions. It's like I'm getting free mini lessons in dentistry! I've mainly gone in for routine teeth cleanings, but did have a crown put in a couple of years ago due to an old filling (not done by Dr. Chen) that had crumbled. I think Dr. Chen did an excellent job because I've had no problems with it and forget that it's even there. I feel no discomfort and it blends in with my real teeth perfectly. Very happy with the results. He opened up his own practice in Santa Monica a couple of years ago and his office is just lovely. It's clean, modern, and comfortable. There's plenty of parking in the underground garage AND they validate! The only downside to all of this is that because he moved offices, my insurance no longer recognizes him as an "in network" dentist. Sigh. His out of pocket prices are a bit high for me and it's just more cost effective for me to find a new dentist who is "in network." I still have yet to find someone as great as Dr. Chen and his staff so I will definitely keep them in mind as back up if I have a dental emergency... read more

I found Dr. Chen through yelp, and I am so glad that I did. To say that I have issues where dentists are concerned, does not even begin to describe it. I've had so many negative experiences, that I had reached the point of only going when I was in severe pain, which really isn't the right way of maintaining one's dental health. I was shopping on yelp, not for my pain this time, but because my daughter had gone to a dentist (whom she HATED) and been told she needed a ton of stuff done. When I indicated I might not be interested in all that stuff being done, the office was shocked because "It is all covered by insurance!" Right, like I should just let them do procedures on my daughter, without thought, as long as it doesn't cost me anything. We all pay more for insurance coverage as long as dentists are out there committing insurance fraud and medical malpractice. Yes, that is what I think it is when you do unnecessary procedures. Anyhow, I contacted Dr. Chen based on yelper's words about him being trustworthy, and decided to give him a try. Procedures he felt my daughter needed, after examining her? None. The whole family now goes to him, even though we've moved to another state. We just fly back when it is time for a check up, or (ugh) if we need a procedure. I've yet to have him ever recommend anything I was suspicious of. His chair-side manner is appealing, and he goes out of the way to ease my nutty dental phobic stress, without ever acting like I am as crazy as I am. Dr. Julian Chen is an outstanding, compassionate, and caring dentist. I first met him on a Saturday morning because I had broke a tooth the night before. (Yes, the office is open for Saturday appointments.) He explained the options and was willing to fix it on the spot. I thought I could go through with it, but I got too nervous and had to bail out right before the injection. He was very patient and understanding, and we rescheduled. Yesterday I went for the appointment (with anxiety medication) and all went well. He offered the option for nitrous gas, which also helped to calm me. In addition, I had been told my another dentist that a second tooth was cracked and needed a crown. Dr. Chen examined the tooth as well, and said a crown was way too aggressive for the condition of the tooth. He recommended a more conservative treatment plan that involves modifying a filling, which reduces trauma to the tooth and my wallet. Someone in this thread mentioned dental costs - all I can say is good dental work is always worth the money. I am 51 with some fillings that have lasted more three decades and no root canals to date. Also, a good dentist will recommend the best plan for you versus what will make them more money. Dr. Chen is a gem! read more

So I keep hearing that probably a third of all online reviews are fake, and then I wonder if amazing reviews are real. When it comes to Dr. Chen, stop wondering. He and his marvelous staff really are worthy of all this praise. Coming from NYC, I turned to Yelp to find a dentist out here, and I'm so grateful that I did. I only THOUGHT I had the best dentist when I was in NYC. I simply cannot say enough about the kind and stunningly good care I received from Dr. Chen. No less attentive or proficient are those who work with him. And they're FUNNY too! Very friendly. Maya, Amy, and Grace are just wonderful. I can't remember ever having any wish for a rating past 5 stars (5+?) on Yelp. I finally found a group and service that sparked the thought. And while dentist trips are never cheap, Dr. Chen's prices are quite reasonable. I should probably note that I have Lupus, and my teeth need care beyond just cleanings. Dr Chen and crew were up to the task... in spades. It's like finding a great mechanic who is talented, honest, and clear about the best course of action for what you need without advising a single thing that you don't so that you're not wasting money... except FAR more important than a mechanic. Dr. Chen is AMAZING! The nicest, most-skilled, and honest dentist I ever been too. His work is absolutely top-notch and his staff is all fantastic. His offices are exactly the place you want to go: comfortable, modern and with nice perks -- netflix while you have your teeth cleaned and free sugar-free drinks in the lobby! The cleanings at his office are significantly superior than other dental offices I've visited -- good for oral health and your teeth feel great. And his work (I've had my share of crowns and cavities) is of the highest quality. With a terrible toothache and totally new to the area (totally as in new to the state of California) I resorted to Yelp where it was quickly obvious that Dr. Chen was the guy to see if you were in Santa Monica. Sure enough, best dentist visit I've had.... ever. What does this mean you ask? Despite being busy, doctor Chen made time to see me immediately. His exam was thorough, checking for gum disease, infection etc... Walked me through next steps which was inevitably needing to get four wisdom teeth (one impacted) removed. Referred a great oral surgeon. Checked up on my progress pre/post procedure and took the time to personally call and offer additional info and advice. Office manager there was a delight as well. All I can say is TV's in every room! YAY! With Netflix & Pandora! And awesome beverages in the waiting area. Little perks like that always make me happy. It means attention to detail and sincerity. Dental visits used to feel like a chore and sometimes dread, but now I can look forward to catching up on movies or TV shows I've been wanting to watch but never get around to. I have been meaning to write this review for about 2 years...so here it is: I went to another dentist a few miles away and was given a completely bogus diagnosis ($4,000+ in work they tried to get me to do). I was in need of a second opinion and found Dr Chen through a referral from a co-worker. WHAT A GREAT DECISION to go visit Dr Chen. He examined me and my x-rays and assured me that my teeth were in great shape and needed no complex procedures. From that point forward I knew I could trust Dr Chen. He is a great doctor..knowledgable, honest, and very gentile. I have since moved to Orange County but will drive the 40 miles up the 405 to keep him as my dentist. Dr. Julian Chen recently moved into his new private office after having worked at the dentist practice that my family has been going to since I was a baby. It was hard to say goodbye to such a great group of dentists and hygienists, but when it was time to make a decision to move with him or not, my husband and I decided to make the switch. I'm glad we did, because his new office is beautiful and comfortable and also has amazingly kind and cheerful receptionists and hygienists just like at his old office. Dr. Chen has always impressed me as a competent, honest, good humored person and both my husband and I have a lot of confidence in what he does. Happily they accept our insurance so price has not been an issue for us. Dr. Chen and his staff are the BEST!! Dr. Chen's bedside manner is impeccable. He is very thorough and takes the time to explain all your options. I was incredibly impressed with every aspect of the experience. I had an awful experience at my previous dentist, whose receptionist was rude, disrespectful & unprofessional. When I decided I'd had enough of that treatment, I asked my friends who they recommended. I received 5 responses, all raving about Dr. Chen. Every single staff member at Dr. Chen's office is kind, friendly, polite & professional. Rachel, Amy, and Grace are GREAT at what they do! It was such an awesome experience, I'm actually looking forward to going back to the dentist! The office is beautiful with relaxing mountain views. The location is convenient with validated parking.
