I went in yesterday as I have a complementary wine tasting from the place we stayed. I was planning to go to other wine tasting places at Edna Valley but as they are too far and it was our last day there so I just went in to Alapay to see what they have. I am pretty surprised what I experienced and found (in a very good way)! First of all, the staff is quite friendly and engaging (though I happened to be the only one there at noon time). He told me some histories of Avila beach and their award winning wines. I ended up tasting Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonney, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel Port and Muscat. I like Sauvignon Blanc. The Chardonney has a very buttery flavor, so it is ok to me. The Pinot Noir is quite smooth. However, it was the Port and the Muscat that won my heart and I ended up buying one Port and two Muscat (the stafff offered me member price if I purchased three bottles)! The place is also nicely decorated and full of interesting merchandises that are related to wine! I love all their doormats (one of them said: Go away, come back with wine!) and corks cages selection. Since the Christmas goods are on sale (75% off) I ended up getting two very beautiful corks cage home (only $7 each). The place started to get quite crowded after I left. It is certainly a good sign:)) I will definitely come back! read more

While staying in Avila Beach for a belated birthday celebration, we decided to try out a couple of wineries in Avila Beach. It was a rainy and blustery day -- we went to Alapay upon the suggestion of the first winery we tasted at (based on what we liked there). We were not disappointed. Marni welcomed us warmly and we enjoyed tasting several of their delicious wines. We ended up joining their wine club -- we especially loved all their reds! We are marinating some lamb steaks to grill tonight and will be trying out the 2015 Legrein-- can't wait! We also look forward to attending the next release party in May. read more

I adore Alapay Cellars. I have been a member now for 4 years and I am never disappointed. Scott and Rebekah are fantastic people and my hubby and I always enjoy seeing them and catching up when possible. The tasting room is delightful. I can remember the first time I went there, it was on a very hot day and the tasting room was still cool. So a great place to escape the heat! I have never been disappointed with a bottle of wine there and am so happy to support their lovely business. As a wine club member, the pick up parties are a lot of fun and they put on great events throughout the year. Many of which I haven't yet gone on but look forward to when I can! I am always so happy with the wine Scott creates - he has a great talent and I am grateful to enjoy their wines year round! read more

Our hostess was the best! She was amazing and we loved almost every single wine we tried. Only reason there isn't five stars is because one of the chocolates we bought was moldy and I didn't find out until after I bit into it...but you don't go there for chocolates right?? OK, so we aren't wine connoisseurs, but our son & daughter-in-law are fast becoming so and they recommended we pay a visit to Alapay Cellars, so we did. Gloria enjoys wine and is comfortable learning the ropes. I don't drink alcohol, so I'm the DD. Today's host, Marni, was very pleasant and presented each selection in a friendly yet professional manner. To Gloria's surprise it wasn't difficult making her selections and she is satisfied she received good value for her money. Great experience! Visiting form Bay Area we got a free tasting coupon from the neighboring Light House hotel (a real gem), so we took a short walk to Alapay. The wine maker was our host and he was a real gentlemen; friendly, engaging and obviously because he makes the wine, very knowledgable. Buttery Chardonnay and the Pinot were lovely. We got a 1/2 case and signed up for the wine club. He has some nice little collectables. and souvenirs and we really enjoyed our tasting and the hospitality. Bravo! read more

We had a terrific experience here. Met the owner who presented the Alapay range of wines to us. He was very friendly, had great recommendations, and was very gracious. He gave us just enough information about the wine beforehand, wasn't pushy, was happy to answer questions afterwards, had palate cleansers and water right there before we had to ask and we ended up buying a membership because the the wine and the stories about his business and journey to winemaking were both compelling. We absolutely loved the port and the tempranillo, and can't wait to dig into our other purchases. We'll definitely be renewing our membership and have very pleasant memories of this visit. read more

This is a great tasting room. We were served by the wine maker for part of our visit, so we got to learn a bit about the wine, as well as stories behind their conception (ask about the wine he makes in honor of his wife). Fair prices, tasting fees waived upon purchase of a bottle, and good wine, it's hard to go wrong here. read more

I visited Alapay Cellars on March 13th, a Saturday around 2pm. The tasting room is on a corner in downtown Avila Beach. You walk downstairs, and there is all kinds of stuff for sale and then 2 bars for serving their wine. The cool aspect of this winery, is that behind each bar there was a large fish aquarium. I can't say I have ever seen that at a winery before. The 2 pourers were very nice and knowledgeable about the wines. They were pouring 8 wines for $5 or complimentary if you bought a bottle. There were 2 whites, 4 reds, and 2 desert wines. Most of the wines they were pouring had won a Silver, Gold, our Double Gold from the San Francisco Chronicle wine competition. The wines did not disappoint. My 3 favorites were the pinot noir, Masix ( a blend ), and a Muscato. My server sold me on the Muscato, after saying it went well being lighly poured on a baked salmon. After tasting the wine, I could not wait to get home and get a salmon from Whole Foods. Will absolutely visit again. read more

I would not recommend this establishment to anyone. Although the wines are decent, the service is awful. The size of the pourings was very small. The time in between pourings was too long. In addition to this, my group was treated very poorly by the owner herself. She really should consider taking a course how to deliver minimal customer service. I will never set foot in this establishment again. We were made to feel very unwelcome. Do not waste your time here. There are plenty of other friendly tasting rooms who actually want your business. read more

Unfortunately, this is some of the worst wine I have ever had. I have been going to Avila Beach for seven years now. I first went to Alapay after receiving a free wine tasting card from the Avila Lighthouse Suites. The wine was so bad I didn't even want to finish the free sample. I tried several in hopes that the next one would be better than the last, but no dice. In addition, the location is less than desirable. I felt like I was in a basement. I say go try the Avila Roasting Company or Morovino. I also heard several more places have open up in Avila. Can't wait to try them! read more

We happened to drop in on day when the owner, Scott, was pouring for tastings, which made the experience a more special thing - no one has the kind of passion for a business as an owner! Learning about what I'll call the "boutique" winery and the success of the business especially their somewhat quiet marketing efforts was very interesting as well as speaking volumes on the quality of their wines. The tasting room was very nice and comfortable in a casual, not over-the-top kind of way. Having the owner explain the varietals was great and it felt like more insight was provided. The wines were very good. I especially enjoyed the zin. Pricing is fair, especially considering the small-ish production volume . However, for the quality of the wines, their pricing offer great values. Now that I know about Alapay, I wouldn't consider visiting Avila beach without stopping by! Thanks Scott! Great place in Avila to taste wines. We liked pretty much all of them, but the highlights were the beautifully buttery Chardonnay, the bubbly, and the smoky Pinot Noir. The jalapeno Cab was also really interesting. Even the port and Moscato--which I don't usually like--were delicious. If you're staying at one of the local hotels, they likely have a coupon for free tasting here.... read more

One of my favorites. So glad to be back home on the Central Coast where I can take full advantage of my wine club membership. Especially love the oak in the wines especially the Chardonnay where the malolactic fermentation is very present and noticeable on the tongue.
